Abstract
The relative position of La and Lb ππ* electronic states in purine nucleobases is a much debated topic, since it can strongly affect our understanding of their photoexcited dynamics. To assess this point, we calculated the absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of adenine, guanine, and their nucleosides in gas-phase and aqueous solution, exploiting recent developments in MCD computational technology within time-dependent density functional theory. MCD spectroscopy allows us to resolve the intense S0→ La transition from the weak S0→ Lb transition. The spectra obtained in water solution, by using B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP functionals and describing solvent effect by cluster models and by the polarizable continuum model (PCM), are in very good agreement with the experimental counterparts, thus providing direct and unambiguous evidence that the energy ordering predicted by TD-DFT, La < Lb, is the correct one.

Abstract
The photodissociation of gaseous protonated adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) and the same system hydrated with one water molecule has been investigated in the 4 to 13 eV photon energy range by coupling a linear quadrupole ion trap with a synchrotron radiation beamline. The dissociation of the bare AMP cation upon absorption of a single ultraviolet (UV) photon below the ionization energy (IE) almost exclusively produces the protonated adenine base, with a measured photodissociation yield showing spectroscopic features with dominant absorption bands located at 4.75 and 6.5 eV, found in agreement with TD-DFT calculations. Nevertheless, the addition of a single water molecule to the system modifies the dissociation energy dependence and strongly suppresses the cleavage of the glycosidic CN bond below the IE. Both the experimental and theoretical results suggest that a single solvent molecule can intrinsically influence the structure and physicochemical properties of the AMP cation, including its UV induced dissociation pattern, beyond the simple water evaporation.

Abstract
Herein, a full quantum mechanical study, in solution, of several models of guanine-quadruplex helices, both parallel and antiparallel, containing up to eight guanine residues, in their electronic excited state is reported. By exploiting TD-DFT calculations and including solvent effects by the polarizable continuum model, we provide the first atomistic description of the processes triggered by the absorption of UV light, reproducing and assigning the experimental optical and electronic circular dichroism spectra. The absorbing excited states are delocalized over multiple bases, whereas emission involves a stacked guanine dimer or a monomer. Several states, with a varying degree of localization and charge-transfer character, rule the photoexcited dynamics, which are deeply affected by the quadruplex topology. The lowest excited-state minimum for parallel quadruplex is an asymmetric excimer involving two stacked guanines, with a small charge transfer character, whereas for the anti-parallel structure, with the same topology of the thrombin binding aptamer, it is a fully symmetric excimer, characterized by a strong decrease of the stacking distance. A monomer-like decay path is the most relevant nonradiative decay pathway. Insights on the effect of the ions (K(+) or Na(+)) on the excited state decay are also provided.

Abstract
Surface hopping dynamics methods using the coupled cluster to approximated second order (CC2), the algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme to second order (ADC(2)), and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) were developed and implemented into the program system Newton-X. These procedures are especially well-suited to simulate nonadiabatic processes involving various excited states of the same multiplicity and the dynamics in the first excited state toward an energetic minimum or up to the region where a crossing with the ground state is found. 9H-adenine in the gas phase was selected as the test case. The results showed that dynamics with ADC(2) is very stable, whereas CC2 dynamics fails within 100 fs, because of numerical instabilities present in the case of quasi-degenerate excited states. ADC(2) dynamics correctly predicts the ultrafast character of the deactivation process. It predicts that C2-puckered conical intersections should be the preferential pathway for internal conversion for low-energy excitation. C6-puckered conical intersection also contributes appreciably to internal conversion, becoming as important as C2-puckered for high-energy excitations. In any case, H-elimination plays only a minor role. TDDFT based on a long-range corrected functional fails to predict the ultrafast deactivation. In the comparison with several other methods previously used for dynamics simulations of adenine, ADC(2) has the best performance, providing the most consistent results so far.

Abstract
The behavior of monomers and dimers of methylated xanthine derivatives in their excited states is investigated by means of the ADC(2), CASSCF, and CASPT2 methods. The results of the calculations of stationary points in the ground and excited states, minima on the S0/S1 crossing seams and the relaxation pathways are used to provide the interpretation of experimental observations of the monomer xanthine derivatives. The effect of dimerization on the excited state properties is studied for various relative orientations of the monomers in the dimer complexes in comparison with the relevant monomer species. A significant stabilization in the excited state minima of dimers is observed. These can act as trapping sites. Various types of conical intersections, with both localized and delocalized characters of wavefunctions, have been found, mainly energetically above the lowest bright excited state in the FC region. In addition, structures with the bonds formed between the two monomers were also found on the crossing seams. The possibility of ultrafast relaxation via these conical intersections is discussed.

Abstract
In order to investigate experimentally observed phototautomerization of gas-phase cytosine, several excited-state tautomerization mechanisms were characterized at the EOM-CCSD and TDDFT levels. All pathways that took place exclusively on the S1 surface were found to have significant barriers that were much higher than the barriers involved in radiationless decay of cytosine tautomers through conical intersections back to the ground state; tautomerization in this fashion cannot compete with radiationless relaxation. However, an alternative possibility is that the conical intersections that facilitate radiationless decay could also facilitate tautomerization. Barrierless pathways indicate that it is energetically possible that bifurcation at the conical intersections can lead to a subset of the population reaching different tautomers. This could be an explanation for the observed tautomerization of keto cytosine after exposure to low-energy UV light.

Abstract
![]()
Ab
initio second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) calculations
using the resolution of the identity (RI) method have been performed
on poly-(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) oligomers with
chain lengths up to eight phenyl rings. Vertical excitation energies
for the four lowest π–π* excitations and geometry
relaxation effects for the lowest excited state (S1) are
reported. Extrapolation to infinite chain length shows good agreement
with analogous data derived from experiment. Analysis of the bond
length alternation (BLA) based on the optimized S1 geometry
provides conclusive evidence for the localization of the defect in
the center of the oligomer chain. Torsional potentials have been computed
for the four excited states investigated and the transition densities
divided into fragment contributions have been used to identify excitonic

Abstract
We here report a fully quantum mechanical study of the main photochemical and photophysical decay routes in aqueous solution of thymine deoxy-dinucleotide (TpT(-) and TpTNa) and of its analogue locked in C3-endo puckering, characterizing five different representative backbone conformers and discussing the chemical physical effects modulating the yield of the different photoproducts. Our approach is based on time-dependent DFT calculations, using the last generation M052X functional, whereas solvent effects are included by means of the polarizable continuum model. Especially when at least one of the sugars adopts C3-endo puckering, a barrierless path on the bright ππ* excitons leads to the S(1)/S(0) crossing region corresponding to the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer. Charge transfer excited states involving the transfer of an electron from the 5' Thy toward the 3' Thy are involved in the formation of the oxetane intermediate in the path leading to 6-4 pyrimidine pyrimidinone adducts. A non-negligible energy barrier is associated with this latter pathway, which is possible only when one of the two nucleotides adopts C2-endo puckering. Monomer-like decay pathways, involving ππ* or nπ* excited states localized on a single base, are shown to be operative also for loosely stacked bases.
