Controlling the Excited-State Reaction Dynamics of a Photochromic Molecular Switch with Sequential Two-Photon Excitation

ON-OFF luminescence signaling of hybrid organic-inorganic switches

The dyads 1OFF and 2OFF were prepared by combining the inorganic luminophores [Ru(phen)2(2-[imidazol-2-yl]pyridine)](2+) and [Re(CO)3Cl(2-[imidazol-2-yl]pyridine)] with 2-(anthracen-9-yl)-4-methylphenol as a second photoactive moiety. In both cases, the inorganic unit operates as the emitter, whereas the organic part acts as a controller. Emission of the inorganic luminophore can be reversibly switched ON and OFF by adjusting the energetic level of the (3)π-π* state of the appended anthracene unit through either dearomatization using a photohydration or aromatization applying a thermal dehydration. Emission of both switches is reversibly recorded and erased multiple times without significant degradation.

Ultrafast Excited-State Dynamics of ortho-Terphenyl and 1,2-Diphenylcyclohexene: The Role of "Ethylenic Twisting" in the Nonadiabatic Photocyclization of Stilbene Analogs

Nonadiabatic photocyclization is the fundamental step underlying photoswitching and light-assisted bond formation within diarylethylenes, yet the details of the nuclear dynamics leading to cyclization remain unclear. We have examined the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of o-terphenyl (OTP) and 1,2-diphenylcyclohexene (DPCH) in solution to determine how variation in structural constraints impacts the course of nonadiabatic photocyclization specifically in stilbenoids. Measured spectral dynamics reflect cyclization through a S1-to-S0 transition for both systems on picosecond time scales, with excited-state decay appreciably faster for DPCH versus OTP. Supportive ab initio calculations reveal a higher energetic penalty in OTP versus DPCH for reaching the lowest-energy conical intersection from the S1 minimum; this penalty is associated primarily with twisting about the carbon-carbon bond that bridges terminal phenyl groups, a structural change that has a critical role in nonadiabatic cis-trans isomerization of diarylethylenes. Findings provide a new experimental perspective on the elusive nuclear dynamics underlying cis-stilbene photocyclization.

Sequential picosecond isomerizations in a photochromic ruthenium sulfoxide complex triggered by pump-repump-probe spectroscopy

The complex [Ru(bpy)(2)(bpSO)](PF(6))(2), where bpy is 2,2'-bipydine and bpSO is 1,2-bis(phenylsulfinyl)ethane, exhibits three distinct isomers which are accessible upon metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) irradiation. This complex and its parent, [Ru(bpy)(2)(bpte)](PF(6))(2), where bpte is 1,2-bis(phenylthio)ethane, have been synthesized and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray crystallography, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. A novel method of 2-color Pump-Repump-Probe spectroscopy has been employed to investigate all three isomers of the bis-sulfoxide complex. This method allows for observation of the isomerization dynamics of sequential isomerizations of each sulfoxide from MLCT irradiation of the S,S-bonded complex to ultimately form the O,O-bonded metastable complex. One-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) (COSY, NOESY, and TOCSY) (1)H NMR data show the thioether and ground state S,S-bonded sulfoxide complexes to be rigorously C(2) symmetric and are consistent with the crystal structures. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that the S,S to S,O isomerization occurs with an observed time constant of 56.8 (±7.4) ps. The S,O to O,O isomerization time constant was found to be 59 (±4) ps by pump-repump-probe spectroscopy. The composite S,S- to O,O-isomer quantum yield is 0.42.
