Solvation dynamics in aqueous anionic and cationic micelle solutions: sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide

Effect of ionic surfactants on the hydration behavior of triblock copolymer micelles: a solvation dynamics study of coumarin 153

Dynamic fluorescence Stokes shift measurements of coumarin 153 (C153) have been carried out to study the influence of ionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, CTAC) on the hydration behavior of aqueous poly(ethylene oxide)(20)-poly(propylene oxide)(70)-poly(ethylene oxide)20 (P123) block copolymer micelles. Increase in SDS or CTAC concentration at a fixed P123 concentration induces the steady-state emission spectra of C153 to shift gradually toward lower energy. This is attributed to an increase in polarity (due to enhanced hydration) experienced by the probe as a consequence of incorporation of ionic head groups in the Corona region. The observed dynamic fluorescence Stokes shift value decreases more in mixed micellar systems than in pure copolymer micelles and the trends are quite similar in the presence of SDS and CTAC. The spectral shift correlation functions were observed to be nonexponential in nature. Critical analysis of the spectral shift correlation function indicates a fast solvation component (<0.2 ns) in P123 micelles, which was absent in the presence of ionic surfactants. Due to increased hydration in the presence of ionic surfactants, the initial fast solvation event was elusive in mixed copolymer-surfactant systems, reflecting the absence of faster solvation component and reduced observed Stokes shift in mixed systems. It has been argued that in the low surfactant concentration region, increase in hydration with the incorporation of ionic head groups in the Corona region is mainly due to increase in mechanically trapped water content. However, at higher surfactant concentrations, bound water content dominates and leads to slower solvation dynamics. The present results also indicate that though CTAC alters the Corona hydration more efficiently than SDS, the overall influence of ionic surfactants on the Corona hydration is grossly similar irrespective of the cationic or anionic nature of the surfactants. Interaction of SDS and CTAC with poly(ethylene oxide)(100)-poly(propylene oxide)(70)-poly(ethylene oxide)(100) (F127) block copolymer micelles has also been studied to comprehend the effect of copolymer composition. The overall trends in dynamic fluorescence Stokes shift and solvation times are similar in both the copolymer micelles.

Dynamics of Solvent and Rotational Relaxation of Coumarin-153 in Room-Temperature Ionic Liquid 1-Butyl-3-methyl Imidazolium Tetrafluoroborate Confined in Poly(oxyethylene glycol) Ethers Containing Micelles

We have investigated solvent and rotational relaxation of coumarin 153 (C-153) in room-temperature ionic liquid (RTILs) 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF(4)]) and the ionic liquid confined in alkyl poly(oxyethylene glycol) ethers containing micelles. We have used octaethylene glycol monotetradecyl ether (C(14)E(8)) and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C(12)E(8)) as surfactants. In the [bmim][BF(4)]-C(14)E(8) micelle, we have observed only a 22% increase in solvation time compared to neat [bmim][BF(4)], whereas in the [bmim][BF(4)]-C(12)E(8) system, we have observed approximately 57% increase in average solvation time due to micelle formation. However, the slowing down in solvation time on going from neat RTIL to RTIL-confined micelles is much smaller compared to that on going from water to water confined micellar aggregates. The 22-57% increase in solvation time is attributed to the slowing down of collective motions of cations and anions in micelles. The rotational relaxation times become faster in both the micelles compare to neat [bmim][BF(4)].

Photoinduced Electron Transfer in a Protein−Surfactant Complex: Probing the Interaction of SDS with BSA

Photoinduced fluorescence quenching electron transfer from N,N-dimethyl aniline to different 7-amino coumarin dyes has been investigated in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles and in bovine serum albumin (BSA)-SDS protein-surfactant complexes using steady state and picosecond time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The electron transfer rate has been found to be slower in BSA-SDS protein-surfactant complexes compared to that in SDS micelles. This observation has been explained with the help of the "necklace-and-bead" structure formed by the protein-surfactant complex due to coiling of protein molecules around the micelles. In the correlation of free energy change to the fluorescence quenching electron transfer rate, we have observed that coumarin 151 deviates from the normal Marcus region, showing retardation in the electron transfer rate at higher negative free energy region. We endeavored to establish that the retardation in the fluorescence quenching electron transfer rate for coumarin 151 at higher free energy region is a result of slower rotational relaxation and slower translational diffusion of coumarin 151 (C-151) compared to its analogues coumarin 152 and coumarin 481 in micelles and in protein-surfactant complexes. The slower rotational relaxation and translational diffusion of C-151 are supposed to be arising from the different location of coumarin 151 compared to coumarin 152 and coumarin 481.

Dynamics of Solvent and Rotational Relaxation of Glycerol in the Nanocavity of Reverse Micelles

The dynamics of solvent and rotational relaxation of Coumarin 480 and Coumarin 490 in glycerol containing bis-2-ethyl hexyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) reverse micelles have been investigated with steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. We observed slower solvent relaxation of glycerol confined in the nanocavity of AOT reverse micelles compared to that in pure glycerol. However, the slowing down in the solvation time on going from neat glycerol to glycerol confined reverse micelles is not comparable to that on going from pure water or acetonitrile to water or acetonitrile confined AOT reverse micellar aggregates. While solvent relaxation times were found to decrease with increasing glycerol content in the reverse micellar pool, rotational relaxation times were found to increase with increase in glycerol content.

Photoinduced electron transfer from N,N-dimethylaniline to different Coumarin dyes has been investigated in dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) micelles and in Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-DTAB protein-surfactant complex using steady-state and picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. We observed a slower fluorescence quenching rate in the DTAB micelles and in the protein-surfactant complex as compared to that in pure acetonitrile solution. Moreover, the observed fluorescence quenching in BSA-DTAB complex was found to be slower than that in DTAB micelles. In the correlation of free-energy change with the fluorescence quenching constant we observed a deviation in the fluorescence quenching electron transfer rate for Coumarin 151 (C-151) from the normal Marcus curve. This observation is ascribed to the stronger interaction of C-151 with the surfactant molecules present in the micelles. This is evident from the slower translation diffusion (D(L)) of Coumarin 151 compared to other probe molecules.

Solvent Relaxation Study of pH-Dependent Hydration of Poly(oxyethylene) Shells in Polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(oxyethylene) Micelles in Aqueous Solutions

The hydration of the poly(oxyethylene) shell in polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(oxyethylene) micelles was investigated by monitoring the solvent relaxation response of a solvent-sensitive fluorophore (patman). It has been found that the relaxation occurs on the nanosecond time scale. Results for triblock copolymer micelles have been compared with those obtained for polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) micelles in order to evaluate the effect of the outer polyoxyethylene layer. Considerable pH-dependent changes in the hydration of poly(oxyethylene) units at the poly(2-vinylpyridine)/polyoxyethylene interface were observed. Additionally, the paper shows that the solvent relaxation technique is a suitable tool for studying polymeric nanoparticles and that the measurement of time-dependent half-width of the emission spectrum allows for estimation of the extent of relaxation process observed by a given experimental setup.

Hydration Layer of a Cationic Micelle, C10TAB: Structure, Rigidity, Slow Reorientation, Hydrogen Bond Lifetime, and Solvation Dynamics

We report a theoretical study of the structure and dynamics of the water layer (the hydration layer) present at the surface of the cationic micelle decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB) by using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The simulated micelle consisted of 47 surfactant molecules (and an equal number of bromide ions), in good agreement with the pioneering light scattering experiments by Debye which found an aggregation number of 50. In this micelle, three partially positively charged methyl groups of each surfactant headgroup face the surrounding water. The nature of the cationic micellar surface is found to play an important role in determining the arrangement of water which is quite different from that in the bulk or on the surface of an anionic micelle, like cesium perfluorooctanoate. Water molecules present in the hydration layer are found to be preferentially distributed in the region between the three partially charged methyl headgroups. It is found that both the translational and rotational motions of water exhibit appreciably slower dynamics in the layer than those in the bulk. The solvation time correlation function (TCF) of bromide ions exhibits a long time component which is found to originate primarily from the interaction of the probe with the micellar headgroups. Thus, the decay of the solvation TCF is controlled largely by the residence time of the probe in the surface. The residence time distribution of the water molecules also exhibits a slow time component. We also calculate the collective number density fluctuation in the layer and find a prominent slow component compared to the similar quantity in the bulk. This slow component demonstrates that water structure in the hydration layer is more rigid than that in the bulk. These results demonstrate that the slow dynamics of hydration layer water is generic to macromolecular surfaces of either polarity.
