Chiral functionalization of optically inactive monolayer-protected silver nanoclusters by chiral ligand-exchange reactions

Peptide-coated silver nanoparticles: synthesis, surface chemistry, and pH-triggered, reversible assembly into particle assemblies

Simple tripeptides are scaffolds for the synthesis and further assembly of peptide/silver nanoparticle composites. Herein, we further explore peptide-controlled silver nanoparticle assembly processes. Silver nanoparticles with a pH-responsive peptide coating have been synthesized by using a one-step precipitation/coating route. The nature of the peptide/silver interaction and the effect of the peptide on the formation of the silver particles have been studied via UV/Vis, X-ray photoelectron, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopies as well as through electron microscopy, small angle X-ray scattering and powder X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement. The particles reversibly form aggregates of different sizes in aqueous solution. The state of aggregation can be controlled by the solution pH value. At low pH values, individual particles are present. At neutral pH values, small clusters form and at high pH values, large precipitates are observed.

Chiral thiol-stabilized silver nanoclusters with well-resolved optical transitions synthesized by a facile etching procedure in aqueous solutions

A novel approach of cyclic reduction in oxidative conditions has been developed to prepare a single dominant species of chiral thiol-stabilized silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). Such AgNCs, which are stable in solution for up to a few days, have been obtained for the first time. The generality of the established procedure is proven by using several enantiomeric water-soluble thiols, including glutathione, as protective ligands. The prepared AgNCs featured prominent optical properties including a single pattern of UV-vis absorption with well-resolved peaks. The chirality of the clusters has been investigated by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. CD spectra displayed strong characteristic signatures in the visible range. Tentative identification of the cluster composition is discussed.

Chiral gold nanoparticles

Monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles have many appealing physical and chemical properties such as quantum size effects, surface plasmon resonance, and catalytic activity. These hybrid organic-inorganic nanomaterials have promising potential applications as building blocks for nanotechnology, as catalysts, and as sensors. Recently, the chirality of these materials has attracted attention, and application to chiral technologies is an interesting perspective. This minireview deals with the preparation of chiral gold nanoparticles and their chiroptical properties. On the basis of the latter, together with predictions from quantum chemical calculations, we discuss different models that were put forward in the past to rationalize the observed optical activity in metal-based electronic transitions. We furthermore critically discuss these models in view of recent results on the structure determination of some gold clusters as well as ligand-exchange experiments examined by circular dichroism spectroscopy. It is also demonstrated that vibrational circular dichroism can be used to determine the structure of a chiral adsorbate and the way it interacts with the metal. Finally, possible applications of these new chiral materials are discussed.
