Aerosol organic-mass-to-organic-carbon ratio measurements

The ratio of organic-mass-to-organic-carbon, typically taken to be between 1.4 and 1.7, has an uncertainty higher than 50%, but this value is used in every measurement to date of the organic fraction of atmospheric particles. A recently developed technique with errors reduced to between 9% and 33% provides measurements of this ratio that show its large variability for samples measured in northeastern Asia and the Caribbean. The technique uses functional groups measured by FTIR spectroscopy to estimate composite organic carbon from the number of carbon bonds present and organic mass from the molecular mass of each functional group associated with the measured bond type. The molecular masses associated with each functional group are not unique and do not account for highly branched organic compositions. For the organic mixtures described by the less than 20% of atmospheric organic mass that has been speciated by GCMS, the theoretical discrepancy in the composite organic-mass-to-organic-carbon ratio is less than 5%. The measured ratios for submicron particle samples are skewed: over 90% of the measurements collected lie between 1.2 and 1.6, with mean values just below 1.4. This variability highlights the importance of measured organic-mass-to-organic-carbon ratios to reduce the uncertainty associated with atmospheric organic aerosol.

The effects of organic species on the hygroscopic behaviors of inorganic aerosols

Water-soluble organic compounds have recently received much attention because of their ability to absorb water and alter the hygroscopic properties of inorganic aerosols. The effects of glycerol, succinic acid, malonic acid, citric acid, and glutaric acid on the water cycles (water activities during particle evaporation and growth), crystallization relative humidities (CRH), and deliquescence relative humidities (DRH) of sodium chloride (NaCl) and ammonium sulfate (AS) were studied using an electrodynamic balance (EDB). The growth factors of these inorganic and organic mixtures were lower than those of the pure inorganic species. The presence of all these organics in the mixed particle reduce the water absorption of NaCl but enhance that of AS relative to that of the pure inorganic salts. Glycerol and succinic acid did not affect the deliquescence properties of NaCl and AS, although succinic acid increased the CRH of NaCl and AS. Malonic acid and citric acid, behaving as nondeliquescent species in single particle studies, caused NaCl and AS particles to absorb a significant amount of water before deliquescence. Glutaric acid caused NaCl and AS to deliquesce gradually, spanning a wide range of relative humidity. The ZSR model was found to be useful in predicting the water activity of the mixtures and the growth ratios. However, the detailed crystallization and deliquescence behaviors of the organic/inorganic mixtures cannot be easily predicted from the hygroscopic properties of the individual components.

Analysis of semivolatile organic compounds in atmospheric aerosols by direct sample introduction thermal desorption GC/MS

A technique for identifying trace amounts of semivolatile organic compounds in atmospheric aerosols and in the NIST Urban Dust standard (SRM1649a) is presented. The technique is based on direct sample introduction (DSI) of small samples followed by thermal desorption in a conventional GC injector. The method enables injection of both solid and liquid samples. Validation of the method, including quantitative determination of EPA-targeted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as the reproducibility and recovery efficiency tests are presented. The advantages of using aluminum foil as sampling filter are also discussed. Determination of different classes of compounds such as quinolines, methylquinoline isomers, PAHs, and n-monocarboxylic acids in the ambient size-segregated aerosol sample is also performed. The method was directly applied to the determination of C6-C16 n-monocarboxylic acids, eliminating the need for a complex sample preparation procedure. The small quantities needed for the analysis as well as the lack of complicated sample preparation steps enable fast characterization of semivolatile organic species present in time-resolved or size-segregated aerosol samples. Thus, this method can potentially be employed for air quality monitoring and field measurements as well as for fast screening of the organic content of ambient particles.
