Modulation of object-based attention by spatial focus under endogenous and exogenous orienting

A left attentional bias in chronic neglect: a case study using temporal order judgments

Previous studies of left visuospatial neglect using temporal order judgments (TOJs) have reported a temporal advantage for a stimulus presented on the right of fixation. The present case study examines an individual who shows a left temporal advantage on TOJ tasks, despite classic left-sided neglect on other tasks and in self-report. Experiment 1 found a continued left advantage on TOJs when employing a novel red/blue TOJ task to reduce potential response bias. Phasic alerting tones presented prior to random trials in Experiment 2 did not improve the abnormal attentional bias, as has been reported in previous studies of neglect. The addition of unilateral trials mixed within bilateral trials in Experiment 3 reduced the observed left advantage, suggesting a flexible attentional focus and implicating a role for strategic endogenous attentional strategies in this individual. Some implications for our understanding of endogenous orienting and relevance to rehabilitation therapy are discussed.

Searching for signs, symbols, and icons: effects of time of day, visual complexity, and grouping

Searching for icons, symbols, or signs is an integral part of tasks involving computer or radar displays, head-up displays in aircraft, or attending to road traffic signs. Icons therefore need to be designed to optimize search times, taking into account the factors likely to slow down visual search. Three factors likely to adversely affect visual search were examined: the time of day at which search was carried out, the visual complexity of the icons, and the extent to which information features in the icon were grouped together. The speed with which participants searched icon arrays for a target was slower early in the afternoon, when icons were visually complex and when information features in icons were not grouped together to form a single object. Theories of attention that account for both feature-based and object-based search best explain these findings and are used to form the basis for ways of improving icon design.

Reinstating object-based attention under positional certainty: The importance of subjective parsing

Previous studies have shown that interference from flanking distractors can be modulated by the object organization of the scene. The experiments reported here test for object-based attention under conditions of positional certainty, which allow a narrow focus of attention to the target. Prior research has suggested that object-based attention does not arise in these circumstances, but the experiments presented here show that object-based attention can still appear if previous experience with the stimuli leads participants to interpret the stimulus pattern as two separate objects. Two control experiments demonstrate that the appearance of object-based attention is not due simply to a widening of the focus of spatial attention. The presence of object-based attention in such a focused-attention task argues against Shomstein and Yantis's (2002) proposed explanation of object-based attention based on priority in the order of visual search.

The role of closure in defining the "objects" of object-based attention

Many recent studies have concluded that the underlying units of visual attention are often discrete objects whose boundaries constrain the allocation of attention. However, relatively few studies have explored the particular stimulus cues that determine what counts as an "object" of attention. We explore this issue in the context of the two-rectangles stimuli previously used by many investigators. We first show, using both spatial-cuing and divided-attention paradigms, that same-object advantages occur even when the ends of the two rectangles are not drawn. This is consistent with previous reports that have emphasized the importance of individual contours in guiding attention, and our study shows that such effects can occur in displays that also contain grouping cues. In our divided-attention experiment, however, this contour-driven same-object advantage was significantly weaker than that obtained with the standard stimulus, with the added cue of closure--demonstrating that contour-based processes are not the whole story. These results confirm and extend the observation that same-object advantages can be observed even without full-fledged objects. At the same time, however, these studies show that boundary closure-one of the most important cues to objecthood per se-can directly influence attention. We conclude that object-based attention is not an all-or-nothing phenomenon; object-based effects can be independently strengthened or weakened by multiple cues to objecthood.

Selective attention as tuning: the case of stroke weight

It has long been demonstrated that when grouping occurs, attention transfer between grouped elements is facilitated, as compared with attention transfer between elements-similarly distant-that are not grouped. This has been shown for grouping by connectedness, by orientation, and by color. The present article extends these findings to the case of similarity in coarseness. By using spatial cuing to elements drawn with different strokes, it is shown that the visual processing of elements that sharestroke heaviness with the cued element is more efficient than that of elements that do not. Three experiments, in which cue validity regarding the target's location and/or its stroke is manipulated, show that the facilitation has both an endogenous and an exogenous component. The findings are discussed in terms of visual tuning to the features of a stimulus, with tuning being the initial stage of visual processing required for identification and discrimination. It is proposed that grouping, rather than explaining the facilitation observed, can be explained by the notion of visual tuning to features. The findings also point to potential methodological pitfalls when different stroke weights are used, unintentionally, in visual displays.
