Abstract
An oxidant-free Rh(iii)-catalyzed direct amidation of alkyl dithianes via C(sp3)-H bond activation utilizing diverse and robust dioxazolone reagents is reported. The reaction hinges on use of a Cp*Rh(iii) complex in combination with an essential amino-carboxylate additive to generate usefully protected 1,3-aminoaldehyde derivatives. The scalability of the reaction was demonstrated as was a series of downstream product functionalizations, including dithiane deprotection, anion alkylation and reductive desulfurization, highlighting the general applicability of this transformation in the synthesis of novel scaffolds and building blocks.

Abstract
An approach for the synthesis of a variety of new β-aryl-β-amino acids has been developed via a palladium-catalyzed auxiliary-directed regioselective Csp3-H arylation of the unactivated β-methylene bond of β-alanine. The use of 8-aminoquinoline amide as an auxiliary efficiently directs the desired regioselective β-Csp3-H functionalization. The developed protocol enables the easy and straightforward access to several high-value β-aryl-β-amino acids useful for peptide engineering, starting from inexpensive and readily available β-alanine precursors in moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract
We report the development of Pd(II)-catalyzed C(sp3)-H arylation of Weinreb amides. This work demonstrates the first example of using Weinreb amide as a directing group for transition metal-catalyzed C(sp3)-H activation. Both the inductive effect and the potential bidentate coordination mode of the Weinreb amides pose a unique challenge for this reaction development. A pyridinesulfonic acid ligand is designed to accommodate the weak, neutral coordinating property of Weinreb amides via preserving the cationic character of Pd center through zwitterionic assembly of Pd/ligand complexes. DFT studies of the C-H cleavage step indicate that the superior reactivity of 3-pyridinesulfonic acid ligand compared to pyridine, Ac-Gly-OH, and ligandless conditions originates from the stabilization of overall substrate-bound Pd species.

Abstract
The present review is devoted to summarizing the recent advances (2015-2017) in the field of metal-catalysed group-directed C-H functionalisation. In order to clearly showcase the molecular diversity that can now be accessed by means of directed C-H functionalisation, the whole is organized following the directing groups installed on a substrate. Its aim is to be a comprehensive reference work, where a specific directing group can be easily found, together with the transformations which have been carried out with it. Hence, the primary format of this review is schemes accompanied with a concise explanatory text, in which the directing groups are ordered in sections according to their chemical structure. The schemes feature typical substrates used, the products obtained as well as the required reaction conditions. Importantly, each example is commented on with respect to the most important positive features and drawbacks, on aspects such as selectivity, substrate scope, reaction conditions, directing group removal, and greenness. The targeted readership are both experts in the field of C-H functionalisation chemistry (to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the last years) and, even more so, all organic chemists who want to introduce the C-H functionalisation way of thinking for a design of straightforward, efficient and step-economic synthetic routes towards molecules of interest to them. Accordingly, this review should be of particular interest also for scientists from industrial R&D sector. Hence, the overall goal of this review is to promote the application of C-H functionalisation reactions outside the research groups dedicated to method development and establishing it as a valuable reaction archetype in contemporary R&D, comparable to the role cross-coupling reactions play to date.

Abstract
An acetyl-protected aminoethyl phenyl thioether has been developed to promote C(sp3)-H activation. Significant ligand enhancement is demonstrated by the realization of the first Pd(II)-catalyzed olefination of C(sp3)-H bonds of free carboxylic acids without using an auxiliary. Subsequent lactonization of the olefinated product via 1,4 addition provided exclusively monoselectivity in the presence of multiple β-C-H bonds. The product γ-lactone can be readily opened to give either the highly valuable β-olefinated or γ-hydroxylated aliphatic acids. Considering the challenges in developing Heck couplings using alkyl halides, this reaction offers a useful alternative.

Abstract
A monoprotected aminoethyl amine chiral ligand based on an ethylenediamine backbone was developed to achieve Pd-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3)-H arylation of cyclopropanecarboxylic and 2-aminoisobutyric acids without using exogenous directing groups. This new chiral catalyst affords new disconnection for preparing diverse chiral carboxylic acids from simple starting materials that are complementary to the various ring forming approaches.

Abstract
Recent advances in the sulfonylation of C–H bonds with the insertion of sulfur dioxide are summarized. C–H bond sulfonylation under transition metal catalysis or through a radical process has been developed. In some cases, the sulfonylation can be performed under catalyst- and additive-free conditions, or can be facilitated by visible light irradiation. The efficiency is also studied by merging the radical process and metal catalysis.

Abstract
Sulfonylation of the benzylic C–H bond is developed through a three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, 4-methylphenols and sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5). The inorganic sulfite of sodium metabisulfite is used as the SO2 surrogate.

Abstract
A generally applicable Pd-catalyzed protocol for the β-C(sp3 )-H arylation of propionic acid and related α-branched aliphatic acids is reported. Enabled by the use of N-acetyl-β-alanine as ligand our protocol delivers a broad range of arylation products. Notably, the highly challenging substrate, propionic acid, which lacks any acceleration through the Thorpe-Ingold effect, can be employed as substrate with synthetically useful yields. Furthermore, the scalability and synthetic applicability of the protocol are demonstrated.
