Removal of Antibiotics from Water by Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity: Isotherms, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, and Adsorption Mechanism

Novel recycling of incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) and waste bentonite as ceramsite for Pb-containing wastewater treatment: Performance and mechanism

With rapid economic growth and urbanisation, the reuse and recycling of solid wastes has become a high priority for the sustainable development of modern cities. In this study, two typical solid wastes, incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) and waste bentonite, were co-valorised to produce granular adsorbents through a simple and energy-saving pelletisation/sintering process. A mixture of ISSA and bentonite at a weight ratio of 3:1 was pelletised and sintered at 700 °C. The resultant ceramsite, with good mechanical strength, could effectively remove Pb(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption kinetics can be described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. The results indicated that the Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption process was dominated by electrostatic attraction, precipitation, and complexation. The isothermal data exhibited a good correlation with the Freundlich model, indicating that the adsorption process was non-ideal and spontaneous. The maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 21.6 ± 0.35 mg/g at 318 K. After 5 cycles of regeneration, the adsorbent maintained good adsorption performance. Moreover, the removal rate was not greatly affected by ionic strength. These findings demonstrate that the granular adsorbent prepared with ISSA and waste bentonite can be recognised as a promising adsorbent for Pb-containing wastewater treatment.

Removal of hazardous dyes, toxic metal ions and organic pollutants from wastewater by using porous hyper-cross-linked polymeric materials: A review of recent advances

Water quality plays a central role in the well-being of all the living organisms on planet Earth. The ever-increasing human population and consequently increasing industrialization, urbanization, and chemically boosted cultivation are rapidly contaminating already stressed water resources. The availability of clean drinking water has become scarce for masses across the globe, and this situation is becoming alarming in developing countries. Therefore, the immediate need for cost-effective, easily accessible, eco-friendly, portable, thermally efficient, and chemically stable technologies and materials is desperately felt to meet the high global demand for clean water. To search for effective materials for wastewater treatment, the hyper-cross-linked porous polymers (HCPs) have emerged as an excellent class of porous materials for wastewater treatment due to their unique features of high surface area, tunability, biodegradability, and chemical versatility. This review describes the advances in fabrication strategies and the efficient utilization of hyper-cross-linked porous polymers for wastewater treatment. Moreover, this review specifically discusses the hyper-cross-linked porous polymers effectiveness for the separation of the dyes, nutrients, inorganic ions, organic contaminants, and toxic metals ions. Finally, the review provides insight into the challenges and prospects in the area of hyper-cross-linked porous polymers. Overall, the hyper-cross-linked porous polymers with empowering proper functionalization can provide an opportunity for the wastewater treatment not only to remove toxic contaminants but also to make contaminated water useful for various applications.

Green synthesis of ZnO coated hybrid biochar for the synchronous removal of ciprofloxacin and tetracycline in wastewater

Preparation of biochar from kaolinite and coconut husk (KCB) and further activated with HCl (KCB-A) and KOH (KCB-B) via a microwave technique for the remediation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TET) from water was carried out. Characterization using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed the successful synthesis of functionalized biochars. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated the potential of the adsorbents for fast and efficient removal of CIP and TET from solution. The adsorption capacities were found to be 71, 140 and 229 mg g-1 for CIP and 118, 117 and 232 mg g-1 for TET removal on KCB, KCB-A and KCB-B, respectively. For KCB, KCB-B and KCB-B, CIP adsorption best followed the pseudo second order kinetic model (PSOM), pseudo first order kinetic model (PFOM) and intraparticle diffusion (IDP) respectively. TET adsorption followed PSOM for KCB, IPD for KCB-B and PFOM for KCB-A. CIP adsorption on KCB, KCB-A and KCB-B best fit the Temkin, Langmuir and Brouers-Sotolongo isotherms, respectively, and TET adsorption on KCB best fit Brouers-Sotolongo while KCB-A and KCB-B best fit Langmuir-Freundlich. Adsorption of both contaminants was thermodynamically feasible showing that these materials are excellent adsorbents for the treatment of pharmaceuticals in water.

Kinetic Modeling for Photo-Assisted Penicillin G Degradation of (Mn0.5Zn0.5)[CdxFe2-x]O4 (x ≤ 0.05) Nanospinel Ferrites

Penicillin G is an old and widely used antibiotic. Its persistence in the environment started to appear in many environmental samples and food chains. The removal of these emerging pollutants has been a challenging task for scientists in the last decades. The photocatalytic properties of Cd²⁺ doped Manganese- Zinc NSFs with chemical formula (Mn_0.5Zn_0.5)[Cd_xFe_2−x]O₄ (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05) NSFs are herein evaluated. The Manganese- Zinc N.S.F.s nanomaterials were deeply characterized, utilizing UV-Vis (reflectance) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption isotherm measurements, and S.E.M., SEM-EDX mapping, and T.E.M. The Kinetic model for the photodegradation of penicillin G (as a model molecule) is investigated using visible light as a source of energy. The kinetic study shows that our results fit well with the modified pseudo-first-order model. The Pen G degradation are 88.73%, 66.65%, 44.70%, 37.62% and 24.68% for x = 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2 and 0.1, respectively, against 14.68% for the free Cd spinel sample. The pseudo-rate constant is bandgap dependent. From the intra-diffusion rate constant (K_d), we developed an intra-diffusion time (τ) model, which decreases exponentially as a function of (x) and mainly shows the existence of three different domains versus cadmium coordination in spinel ferrite samples. Hence, Cadmium’s presence generates spontaneous polarization with a strong opportunity to monitor the charge separation and then open the route to a new generation of “assisted” photocatalysts under visible light.

Conventional and emerging technologies for removal of antibiotics from wastewater

Antibiotics and pharmaceuticals related products are used to enhance public health and quality of life. The wastewater that is produced from pharmaceutical industries still contains noticeable amount of antibiotics, and this has remained one of the major environmental problems facing public health. The conventional wastewater remediation approach employed by the pharmaceutical industries for the antibiotics wastewater removal is unable to remove the antibiotics completely. Besides, municipal and livestock wastewater also contain unmetabolized antibiotics released by human and animal, respectively. The antibiotic found in wastewater leads to antibiotic resistance challenges, also emergence of superbugs. Currently, numerous technological approaches have been developed to remove antibiotics from the wastewater. Therefore, it was imperative to critically review the weakness and strength of these current advanced technological approaches in use. Besides, the conventional methods for removal of antibiotics such as Klavaroti et al., Homem and Santos also discussed. Although, membrane treatment is discovered as the ultimate choice of approach, to completely remove the antibiotics, while the filtered antibiotics are still retained on the membrane. This study found, hybrid processes to be the best solution antibiotics removal from wastewater. Nevertheless, real-time monitoring system is also recommended to ascertain that, wastewater is cleared of antibiotics.

Antibiotic Adsorption by Metal-Organic Framework (UiO-66): A Comprehensive Kinetic, Thermodynamic, and Mechanistic Study

Bacterial antibiotic resistance has been deemed one of the largest modern threats to human health. One of the root causes of antibiotic resistance is the inability of traditional wastewater management techniques, such as filtration and disinfection, to completely eliminate residual antibiotics from domestic and industrial effluents. In this study, we examine the ability of UiO-66; a metal-organic framework (MOF); in removing the antibiotic Doxycycline from aqueous environments. This study's findings suggest that UiO-66 was able to remove nearly 90% of the initial Doxycycline concentration. To correlate the isothermal data, Langmuir and Freundlich models were used. It was determined that the Langmuir model was best suited. Pseudo-first and -second order models were examined for kinetic data, where the pseudo-second order model was best suited-consistent with the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity found by the Langumir model. Thermodynamic analysis was also examined by studying UiO-66 adsorption under different temperatures. Mechanisms of adsorption were also analyzed through measuring adsorption at varying pH levels, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET). This study also explores the possibility of recycling MOFs through exposure to gamma radiation, heat, and heating under low pressure, in order for UiO-66 to be used in multiple, consecutive cycles of Doxycycline removal.

Removal of Drugs in Polluted Waters with Char Obtained by Pyrolysis of Hair Waste from the Tannery Process

The presence and final destination of pharmaceutical compounds in waters constitute one of the emerging events in current environmental chemistry. Two widely consumed compounds have been evaluated in this study, amoxicillin (AMOX) and diclofenac (DFC), at a concentration of 200 mg L-1. The presence of both in wastewater has been verified, generating problems in ecosystems and human health. Pyrolysis of hair waste from a tannery process was performed in a fixed-bed reactor. Char was obtained at different operating temperatures (300, 350, 400, and 450 °C), which underwent a characterization of heavy metals and elemental composition. An activation process was applied to the char obtained at 450 °C by means of physicochemical processes and with two chemical agents (KOH and K2CO3). For the removal of drugs, two separate tests were performed, one for 28 days and the other one for 4 h, to assess the efficiency and the percentage of removal. It was found that the char obtained at 450 °C is the one that removes most of both compounds: more than 90% of AMOX and more than 80% of DFC.
