Azulene-Based BN-Heteroaromatics

Azulene, a nonalternant bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, has unique chemical and physical properties and is considered to be a promising building block for constructing novel polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heteroaromatics. We present here the first two azulene-based BN-heteroaromatics Az-BN-1 and Az-BN-2. The chemical structures and optical and electrochemical properties of both compounds have been investigated, as well as their sensing behavior in response to fluoride ion. Az-BN-1 and Az-BN-2 show different photophysical properties from other reported BN-embedded PAHs, such as lower band gaps and unusual fluorescence. In addition, Az-BN-1 and Az-BN-2 exhibit unexpected deboronization upon addition of trifluoroacetic acid, which distinguishes them from other reported BN-heteroaromatics and can be ascribed to the unique property of the azulene unit.

Stability of Selected Hydrogen Bonded Semiconductors in Organic Electronic Devices

The electronics era is flourishing and morphing itself into Internet of Everything, IoE. At the same time, questions arise on the issue of electronic materials employed: especially their natural availability and low-cost fabrication, their functional stability in devices, and finally their desired biodegradation at the end of their life cycle. Hydrogen bonded pigments and natural dyes like indigo, anthraquinone and acridone are not only biodegradable and of bio-origin but also have functionality robustness and offer versatility in designing electronics and sensors components. With this Perspective, we intend to coalesce all the scattered reports on the above-mentioned classes of hydrogen bonded semiconductors, spanning across several disciplines and many active research groups. The article will comprise both published and unpublished results, on stability during aging, upon electrical, chemical and thermal stress, and will finish with an outlook section related to biological degradation and biological stability of selected hydrogen bonded molecules employed as semiconductors in organic electronic devices. We demonstrate that when the purity, the long-range order and the strength of chemical bonds, are considered, then the Hydrogen bonded organic semiconductors are the privileged class of materials having the potential to compete with inorganic semiconductors. As an experimental historical study of stability, we fabricated and characterized organic transistors from a material batch synthesized in 1932 and compared the results to a fresh material batch.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Crystal Structures of Imides Condensed with p-Phenylamino(Phenyl) Amine and Fluorescence Property

A series of aromatic diimide and monoimide compounds condensed with p-phenylamino(phenyl)amine were synthesized and confirmed by Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR), Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Elemental Analysis (EA), and High Resolution Mass Spectroscopy (HRMS). Meanwhile, single crystal X-ray diffraction showed the existence of intermolecular N···O hydrogen bonds, which affected the thermal stabilities of corresponding compounds by the support of Thermalgravimetric Analysis (TGA) curves. The steady-state UV-vis absorption peaks of synthetic compounds 1-6 appeared in the range of 220-380 nm. Fluorescence emission spectra showed peaks in the range of 290-420 nm. Meanwhile, deep-blue or violet-blue emissions for 2, 4, and 5 in THF under excitations of 254 nm and 365 nm, respectively, were observed at room temperature in air. Furthermore, Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammogram CV were conducted within -1.5-+1.5 V to show quasi-reversible behavior for conjugated compounds and irreversible behavior for less conjugated ones.

Luminescent-Substituted Fluoranthenes-Synthesis, Structure, Electrochemistry, and Optical Properties

Six novel fluoranthene derivatives, namely, three terminally substituted and three bis(fluoranthene) units with fluorene, bithiophene, and carbazole spacers, were obtained through [2+2+2] cycloaddition and characterized completely. Based on the conducted studies, the obtained derivatives can be classified as donor-acceptor (D-A) and acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) systems, in which the fluoranthene unit acts as an electron-withdrawing unit. The optical results revealed that novel fluoranthene derivatives absorb light in the range λ=236-417 nm, which originates from a π→π^* transition within the conjugated system. The compounds exhibit fluorescence that range from deep blue to green, which mainly arises from intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states. High Stoke shifts and high quantum yields in solution (ϕ=0.22-0.57) and in the solid state (ϕ=0.18-0.44) have been observed for fluoranthene derivatives. All the derivatives display multistep oxidation processes at low potentials. The electronic structure of the presented compounds is additionally supported by time-dependent DFT computations.

Stimuli-responsive fluorescence switching of cyanostilbene derivatives: ultrasensitive water, acidochromism and mechanochromism

A novel donor-π-acceptor structure stimuli-responsive fluorescent material of (Z)-2-(4'-(diphenylamino)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-3-(pyridin-2-yl)acrylonitrile (oN-TPA) was designed and synthesized, with the cyano-group and pyridine as the acceptors (A) and triphenylamine as the donor (D). oN-TPA exhibits an obvious solvatochromic effect and the excited state is confirmed to be a hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) state that simultaneously possesses the locally-excited (LE) state and charge transfer (CT) state characters. The LE state ensures relatively high fluorescence efficiency while the CT state provides multi-stimuli responsive fluorescence behaviors because it is easily tuned by the surrounding environment. Firstly, oN-TPA exhibits "on-off-on" fluorescence properties in the mixture of water/tetrahydrofuran (THF) with the increasing water content. For the "on-off" part, a good linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and water fraction is achieved, which is ascribed to the synergistic effect of protons in water and intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) effect depending on solvent polarity. The "off-on" part demonstrates the aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) character of oN-TPA. Secondly, oN-TPA can be used as a protonic acid sensor to detect trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in solvent and HCl vapour in the solid state due to the binding of the proton to the pyridine group. Finally, oN-TPA presents remarkable and reversible mechanochromic fluorescence switching between 552 nm and 642 nm (90 nm red-shift) during the pressurizing-depressurizing process. This work not only comprehensively demonstrates the stimuli-responsive fluorescence behaviors of oN-TPA, but also provides a D-π-A structure fluorescent material possessing potential applications in detection and sensing with remarkable fluorescence changes.

The Effect of Aromatic Diimide Side Groups on the π-Conjugated Polymer Properties

The presented study describes the method for the synthesis and characterization of a new class of conjugated copolymers containing a perylenediimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) side groups. The main conjugated backbone is a donor-acceptor polymer poly[3,6-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] containing thiophene and carbazole as donor units and benzothiadiazole as an acceptor unit. The presented compounds were synthesized in a multistep synthesis. The polymerization was carried out by Suzuki or Stille coupling reaction. Redox properties of the studied polymers were tested in different conditions. Electrochemical investigation revealed independent reduction of the main polymer chain and diimide side groups. UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed the overlap of two absorption spectra. The difference between the electron affinity of the polymer main chain and that of the diimides estimated electrochemically is approximately 0.3 eV.

Influence of chlorine atoms in bay positions of perylene-tetracarboxylic acids on their spectral properties in Langmuir-Blodgett films

The influence of chlorine atoms in the bay positions of the perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acids with the different alkyl chains length on their spectral properties in monomolecular films has been studied. The chlorinated (PCln) and for comparison non-chlorinated (Pn) perylene derivatives were deposited onto quartz plates using a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The absorption spectra showed that the PCln and Pn dyes form in monolayers the I- and J-type aggregates, respectively. In turn, their steady-state and time-resolved emission spectra revealed presence of two emitter types, which we assigned to monomers and excimers. The luminescence lifetimes of the PCln monomers and excimers determined with a time-correlated single photon counting method (TCSPC) are significantly shorter than these obtained for the same emitter types in the Pn monolayers. In the case of the chlorinated dyes, the contribution of the monomer emission dominates over the excimer emission and is almost independent from the alkyl chain length. By contrast, the share of the Pn monomer emission increases strongly with a number of carbon atoms in their hydrocarbon chains. The luminescence quantum yields (LQY) of the Pn and PCln monolayers measured in an integrating sphere are in the range of 0.06-0.11. The presented results reveal that the PCln dyes exhibit lower tendency for aggregation than the non-chlorinated derivatives. It can be explained by limited intermolecular interaction between neighbouring PCln molecules caused by deformation of the perylene core as a result of strongly electronegative chlorine atoms in the bay positions of these dyes. Moreover, the strong influence of the alkyl chain length on the Pn aggregation contrary to the case of the PCln derivatives was observed.

Isomerisation of Liquid-Crystalline Tristriazolotriazines

Star-shaped discotic liquid crystals with columnar superstructures constitute a highly interesting class of organic materials. Phenyl-substituted tris[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,3,5]triazine, prepared by a Huisgen reaction of phenyltetrazole and cyanuric chloride, represents an excellent core for discotic liquid crystals (DLCs). The thermal stability is not perfect, at temperatures above the clearing point, a successive threefold isomerization leads to a highly planar, C₃ -symmetrical isomer, which mainly differs in the orientation of the aryl substituents to the centre of the molecule. A new class of discotic liquid crystals has been obtained: Equipped with peripheral alkoxy chains both isomers can form broad thermotropic mesophases. The optical, thermal, and physical properties were investigated by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray scattering, UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. The thermotropic properties are decisively affected by the molecular structure of the isomers, isomerisation leads to higher melting points but also the loss or even gain of mesomorphism is observed.

Azulene-Fused Linear Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Small Bandgap, High Stability, and Reversible Stimuli Responsiveness

Azulene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were synthesized from commercially available azulene in four steps. The resulting azulene conjugates exhibited significantly narrow HOMO-LUMO bandgaps with high air stability, confirmed by photophysical study. Introduction of azulene also enabled the unique reversible stimuli-responsiveness even with the weak acid and base, which can potentially control the degree of conjugation and optoelectronic properties by simple acid-base and redox processes.

Synthesis and optical properties of new 5'-aryl-substituted 2,5-bis(3-decyl-2,2'-bithiophen-5-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles

New photoluminescent donor–acceptor–donor (DAD) molecules, namely 5'-aryl-substituted 2,5-bis(3-decyl-2,2'-bithiophen-5-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles were prepared by palladium-catalyzed coupling from readily available compounds such as ethyl 3-decyl-2,2'-bithiophene-5-carboxylate and aryl halides. The obtained compounds feature increasing bathochromic shifts in their emission spectra with increasing aryl-substituent size yielding blue to bluish-green emissions. At the same time, their absorption spectra are almost independent from the identity of the terminal substituent with λ_max values ranging from 395 to 405 nm. The observed trends are perfectly predicted by quantum chemical DFT/TDDFT calculations carried out for these new molecules.

Synthesis and Properties of a Twisted and Stable Tetracyano-Substituted Tetrabenzoheptacene

An approach for the synthesis of pyrene-fused acenes that allows the introduction of electron-withdrawing cyano groups in key positions that simultaneously (i) induce twists in the aromatic framework and (ii) stabilize the LUMO level is reported. This combination of steric and electronic features provide a twisted, stable, and n-type tetrabenzoheptacene as confirmed by a combination of theoretical calculations and optical, electrochemical, thermal, and electrical characterization.

Synthesis and optical and electrochemical properties of water-soluble cationic fluorophores based on bispyridinium and dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide

Two water-soluble cationic fluorophores (FSOPyCl and FSOmiCl) based on bispyridinium and dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide show deep blue emission, and exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields of 69% and 50% in water, respectively.

Pushing to the low limits: tetraazaanthracenes with very low-lying LUMO levels and near-infrared absorption

Here we explain the extensive changes which result by transforming benzothiadiazoles to highly electron-deficient tetraazaanthracenes.

Polarization of an electroactive functional film on titanium for inducing osteogenic differentiation

To enhance the surface bioactivity of titanium (Ti) prostheses, an electroactive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film was prepared on a Ti substrate to provide a mimetic of the electrical microenvironment, which facilitated the performance of cell functions. The results of cell proliferation and differentiation assays indicated that polarization of the PVDF-Ti (PTi) altered its surface charge, thus inducing adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of cells. The polarized PVDF-Ti (PPTi) may therefore find applications in bone regeneration.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polysubstituted Dibenzopyrenes as Charge-Transporting Materials

A new class of benzopyrene-based semiconducting molecules is prepared and characterized. A four-step protocol involving Suzuki coupling and aromatic dehydrogenation reactions renders the new unsymmetrical framework. Introduction of various substituents at the dibenzopyrene framework modulates mainly the optoelectronic properties rather than the packing motif. Single-crystal field-effect transistors fabricated from these materials show a mobility ranging from 0.7 to 3.2 cm²/(V s). The highest mobility, 3.2 cm²/(V s), with an on/off ratio of 10⁴-10⁵ was achieved for 11-methoxy-8-(4-methoxyphenyl)dibenzo[a,e]pyrene.

Highly Thermostable, Non-oxidizable Indium, Gallium, and Aluminium Perfluorophthalocyanines with n-Type Character

Perfluorophthalocyanines incorporating three-valent metals, namely In(Cl), Ga(Cl), and Al(Cl), have been synthesized and characterized. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that these compounds exhibit outstanding thermal stability and a tendency to sublime at a temperature exceeding around 350 °C without thermal decomposition. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to probe the frontier orbital energy levels of these compounds in THF solution. All three compounds undergo three quasi-reversible reductions with the first one leading to the formation of an anion radical, namely MPc(-.) , as confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry. The compounds studied were intrinsically resistive to oxidation, which indicates that they are very good electron acceptors (n-type materials). The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (Eg ) of the three compounds determined by UV/Vis spectroscopy were relatively unaffected by the three-valent metals incorporated into the phthalocyanine macrocycle. Similarly, the energies of the HOMO (EHOMO ) and LUMO (ELUMO ) orbitals remained virtually unaffected by the three-valent metals in the perfluorophthalocyanine. Importantly, all the perfluorophthalocyanines studied possess LUMO levels between -4.76 and -4.85 eV, which makes their reduced forms resistant to electron trapping by O2 and H2 O. This property opens up the possibility for the fabrication of electronic devices operating under ambient conditions. All three compounds demonstrated very good photostability as solid thin films.
