On the preferences of five-membered chelate rings in coordination chemistry: insights from the Cambridge Structural Database and theoretical calculations

The purpose of this review is to give an overview of three important N-bidentate ligands: 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), and ethylenediamine (en). We have not attempted to be comprehensive because of the huge amount of activity being done in coordination chemistry using these ligands. Instead we present a full structural and geometrical study by using the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) combined with theoretical calculations that allow us to parameterize their coordinating properties and ability to coordinate to transition and non-transition metals. More importantly, we illustrate that upon coordination and formation of the five-membered chelate ring, these ligands are able to adapt themselves to the requirements of the different metals by changing the MN distances and NMN angles. Therefore, a redefinition of the preferences of these ligands to metals with large ionic radii is needed. Finally, we will present some facts about the participation of these ligands in inorganic-organic hybrids (IOHs) based on Keggin polyoxometalates (POMs).

Polynuclear alkoxy-zinc complexes of bowl-shaped macrocycles and their use in the copolymerisation of cyclohexene oxide and CO2

The reactions between alcohols and the tetranuclear ethyl-Zn complexes of an ortho-phenylene-bridged polypyrrole macrocycle, Zn4Et4(L1) 1 and the related anthracenyl-bridged macrocyclic complex, Zn4Et4(THF)4(L2) 2 have been studied. With long-chain alcohols such as n-hexanol, the clean formation of the tetranuclear hexoxide complex Zn4(OC6H13)4(L1) 3 occurs. In contrast, the use of shorter-chain alcohols such as i-propanol results in the trinuclear complex Zn3(μ2-OiPr)2(μ3-OiPr)(HL1) 4 that arises from demetalation; this complex was characterised by X-ray crystallography. The clean formation of these polynuclear zinc clusters allowed a study of their use as catalysts in the ring-opening copolymerisation (ROCOP) reaction between cyclohexene oxide and CO2. In situ reactions involving the pre-catalyst 1 and n-hexanol formed the desired polymer with the best selectivity for polycarbonate (90%) at 30 atm CO2, whilst the activity and performance of pre-catalyst 2 was poor in comparison.

Synthesis of Metallomacrocycle and Coordination Polymers with Pyridine-Based Amidocarboxylate Ligands and Their Catalytic Activities towards the Henry and Knoevenagel Reactions

The reactions of 3,3'-{(pyridine-2,6-dicarbonyl)bis(azanediyl)}dibenzoic acid (H2L) with zinc(II), cadmium(II), and samarium(III) nitrates were studied, and the obtained compounds, [Zn(1κO:2κO'-L)(H2O)2] n (1), [Cd(1κO 2:2κO 2-L)(H2O)2]2 ⋅6n H2O⋅ n C4H8O2 ⋅1.5n DMF (2), and [Sm(1κO:2κO'O'':3κO'''-L)(NO3)(H2O)(dmf)] n ⋅ n DMF (3), were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Compounds 1 and 3 have 1D zigzag- and double-chain-type structures, respectively, whereas 2 features a dinuclear metallomacrocyclic complex. The ligand (L2-) orients in different conformations, that is, syn-syn for 1 and anti-anti for 2 and 3. Compound 1 is the first example in which the syn-syn conformation for this ligand has been observed. These compounds act as heterogeneous catalysts for the nitroaldol (Henry; in water medium) and Knoevenagel condensation reactions of different aldehydes, and the most effective is zinc coordination polymer 1. Recyclability, heterogeneity, and size-selectivity tests were performed, which showed that the catalyst was highly active over at least four recycling runs.

Anionic Hosts for the Incorporation of Cationic Guests

Pentaphosphaferrocene [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] (1 a) represents an excellent building block for the template-directed synthesis of spherical supramolecules. Here, the self-assembly of 1 a with CuI and CuII halides in the presence of the template complexes [FeCp2 ][PF6 ], [CoCp2 ][PF6 ] and [CoCp2 ] is reported, testifying to the redox behavior of the formed supramolecules. The oxidation or reduction capacity of these reactive complexes does not inhibit their template impact and, for the first time, the cationic metallocene [CoCp2 ]+ is enclosed in unprecedented anionic organometallic hosts. Furthermore, the large variety of structural motifs, as icosahedral, trigonal antiprismatic, cuboidal and tetragonal antiprismatic arrangements of 1 a units are realized in the supramolecules [FeCp2 ]@[{1 a}12 (CuBr)17.3 ] (3), [CoCp2 ]+3 {[CoCp2 ]+ @[{1 a}8 Cu24.25 Br28.25 (CH3 CN)6 ]4- } (4), {[Cp2 Co]+ @[{1 a}8 (CuI)28 (CH3 CN)9.8 ]}{[Cp2 Co]+ @[{1 a)}8 Cu24.4 I26.4 (CH3 CN)8 ]2- } (5), and [{1 a}3 {(1 a)2 NH}3 Cu16 I10 (CH3 CN)7 ] (6), respectively.

Improved Access to 1,8-Diformyl-carbazoles Leads to Metal-Free Carbazole-Based [2 + 2] Schiff Base Macrocycles with Strong Turn-On Fluorescence Sensing of Zinc(II) Ions

Development of a new and high yielding synthetic route to 1,8-diformyl-carbazoles 3 (3a 3,6-di- tert-butyl substituted; 3b 3,6-unsubstituted) is reported. Use of a Heck coupling reaction, followed by ozonolysis, has greatly facilitated the preparation of these interesting head units in useful quantities. An initial foray into the new generations of Schiff base macrocycles that ready access to these head units (3) opens up, has led to the direct (i.e., metal-free) synthesis of two [2 + 2] macrocycles from 3a or 3b with 1,2-diaminoethane, H₂L^tBu (4a) and H₂L^H (4b), respectively, obtained as yellow powders in high yields (87-88%). The dizinc complex [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂] (5b) was isolated as a bright yellow solid in 83% yield, by 1:2:2 reaction of H₂L^H with zinc(II) acetate and triethylamine. Aldehydes 3a and 3b, macrocycle H₂L^H, and complex [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂] (5b) have been structurally characterized. The carbazole NH makes bifurcated hydrogen bonds with the pair of flanking 1,8-diformyl-moieties in 3, or 1,8-diimine-moieties in H₂L^H, leading to a flat, all- cis conformation. The stepped conformation of the metal-free macrocycle H₂L^H is retained in [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂], despite deprotonation and binding of two zinc(II) centers within the two tridentate pockets. The N₃O₂ coordination of the zinc ions is completed by one μ_1,1- and one μ_1,3- bridging acetate anion. Excitation of nanomolar [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂] in DMF at 335 nm results in clearly visible blue fluorescence (λ_max = 460 nm). Further studies on the H₂L^H macrocycle revealed turn-on fluorescence, with selectivity (over Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and a range of 3d dications) and nanomolar sensitivity for zinc(II) ions, highlighting one of the many potential applications for these new carbazole-based Schiff base macrocycles.

Hexanuclear and Trinuclear Metal Complexes of a Giant Octadecaaza Macrocycle

A large macrocyclic ligand containing six pyridine fragments and six diaminocyclopentane fragments is able to form hexanuclear Zn(II) and Ni(II) complexes as well as a trinuclear Zn(II) complex. X-ray crystal structures of these complexes indicate quite different ligand conformations. In the hexanuclear Zn(II) derivative with chloride counteranions metal ions have a distorted-trigonal-bipyramidal geometry and occupy loop sections formed by the highly folded macrocycle, which adopts a globular shape. In the hexanuclear Ni(II) derivative with nitrate counteranions metal ions exhibit a distorted-octahedral geometry and the ligand conformation is much more open, while in the trinuclear Zn(II) complex the macrocycle wraps around the octahedral metal ions. The last highly entangled conformation of the trinuclear complex is also present in solution, as confirmed by the NOESY spectra. The NMR data indicate that the hexanuclear Zn(II) complex partially dissociates in water solutions to form the trinuclear complex, while the ¹H NMR titration of the free macrocycle with zinc(II) chloride indicates that the formation of a trinuclear complex corresponds to cooperative binding of metal ions.

Three-Dimensional Network Structures Based on Pyridyl-Calix[4]Arene Metal Complexes

A new series of supramolecular assemblies is obtained through the interaction of 3-pyridylmethyl-calixarenes and copper or zinc ions. The complexes formed are characterized both in solution and in the solid state. The results offer appealing insights into how the steric crowding of the lower rim and different coordination modes of the metal centers have a great impact on the overall architecture of the complexes with the formation of monomeric, dimeric, or oligomeric/polymeric species.

An Icosidodecahedral Supramolecule Based on Pentaphosphaferrocene: From a Disordered Average Structure to Individual Isomers

Pentaphosphaferrocenes [CpR Fe(η5 -P5 )] (1) and CuI halides are excellent building blocks for the formation of discrete supramolecules. Herein, we demonstrate the potential of Cu(CF3 SO3 ) for the construction of the novel 2D polymer [{Cp*Fe(μ4 ,η5:1:1:1 -P5 )}{Cu(CF3 SO3 )}]n (2) and the unprecedented nanosphere (CH2 Cl2 )1.4 @[{CpBn Fe(η5 -P5 )}12 {Cu(CF3 SO3 )}19.6 ] (3). The supramolecule 3 has a unique scaffold beyond the fullerene topology, with 20 copper atoms statistically distributed over the 30 vertices of an icosidodecahedron. Combinatorics was used to interpret the average disordered structure of the supramolecules. In this case, only two pairs of enantiomers with D5 and D2 symmetry are possible for bidentate bridging coordination of the triflate ligands. DFT calculations showed that differences in the energies of the isomers are negligible. The benzyl ligands enhance the solubility of 3, enabling NMR-spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric investigations.

Integrative self-sorting of coordination cages based on 'naked' metal ions

Coordination-driven self-assembly of metal ions and organic ligands has been extensively utilised over the past four decades to access a variety of nano-sized cage assemblies, with functions ranging from sensing and catalysis to drug delivery. Many of the reported examples, however, are highly symmetric architectures that contain one type of organic ligand carrying not more than a single functionality. This contrasts significantly with the level of structural and functional complexity encountered in biological macromolecular hosts, which are able to bind and chemically convert smaller molecules in their highly-decorated internal cavities. To address this disparity, rational approaches that facilitate heteroleptic assembly by regulating integrative self-sorting of metal ions and multiple ligand components have emerged. Among these, routes to access coordination cages from 'naked' metal cations that offer more than two coordination sites are still in early development, as the complexity of the self-sorted products in terms of composition and stereochemistry presents an entropic challenge. This feature article highlights recent progress in controlling integrative self-sorting of multi-component cage systems with a focus on structures composed of 'naked' metal cations and two different ligands. Once heteroleptic self-assembly strategies find a wider implementation in supramolecular design, the resultant interplay between tailored combinations of precisely positioned substituents promises enhanced functionality in nanoscale structures.

Morphological Control of Heteroleptic cis- and trans-Pd2 L2 L'2 Cages

Control over the integrative self-sorting of metallo-supramolecular assemblies opens up possibilities for introducing increased complexity and function into a single self-assembled architecture. Herein, the relationship between the geometry of three ligand components and morphology of three self-sorted heteroleptic [Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ cages is examined. Pd-mediated assembly of two bis-monodentate pyridyl ligands with native bite angles of 75° and 120° affords a cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ cage while the same reaction with two ligands with bite angles of 75° and 60° gives an unprecedented, self-penetrating structural motif; a trans-[Pd2 (anti-L)2 L'2 ]4+ heteroleptic cage with a "doubly bridged figure eight" topology. Each heteroleptic assembly can be formed by cage-to-cage conversion of the homoleptic precursors and morphological control of [Pd2 L2 L'2 ] cages is achieved by selective ligand displacement transformations in a system of three ligands and at least six possible cage products.

Spectrophotometric and electrochemical study for metal ion binding of azocalix[4]arene bearing p-ethylester group

The complexation behavior of diazophenylcalix[4]arene bearing para-ethylester group (p-EAC) for alkali, alkaline earth, various heavy and transition metal ions (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, Cs⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, Ba²⁺, Cr³⁺, Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Pb²⁺) was investigated by spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods in CH₃CN. p-EAC exhibits decreased absorbance at 353nm in the presence of Cr³⁺, Fe²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Cu²⁺. The spectra of p-EAC showed bathochromic shift in absorption maximum on the addition of Cr³⁺, Fe²⁺, or Pb²⁺ with decreasing order of absorbance (Cr³⁺>Fe²⁺>Pb²⁺), and on the other hand, hypsochromic shift on the addition of Cu²⁺. This leads to the selective coloration from light green to orange and colorless for Cr³⁺ and Cu²⁺ that can be detected by the naked eye, respectively. In electrochemistry experiments, p-EAC also showed two different types of voltammetric changes toward Cr³⁺, Fe²⁺, or Pb²⁺, and toward Cu²⁺, whereas no significant changes occurred in the presence of the other metal ions. Nonlinear fitting curve procedure was used to determine a logarithmic value of 5.20, 4.92, 3.54 and 4.80 for the stability constants of the complex of p-EAC with Cr³⁺, Fe²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Cu²⁺, respectively.

PdII2L4-type coordination cages up to three nanometers in size

The utilization of large ligands in coordination-based self-assembly represents an attractive strategy for the construction of supramolecular assemblies more than two nanometers in size. However, the implementation of this strategy is hampered by the fact that the preparation of such ligands often requires substantial synthetic effort. Herein, we describe a simple one-step protocol, which allows large bipyridyl ligands with a bent shape to be synthesized from easily accessible and/or commercially available starting materials. The ligands were used to construct PdII2L4-type coordination cages of unprecedented size. Furthermore, we provide evidence that these cages may be stabilized by close intramolecular packing of lipophilic ligand side chains. Packing effects of this kind are frequently encountered in protein assemblies, but they are seldom used as a design element in metallasupramolecular chemistry.

Macrocyclic {3d-4f} SMMs as building blocks for 1D-polymers: selective bridging of 4f ions by use of an O-donor ligand

Crystallisation of the tetranuclear 3d-4f Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) [CuTb^III(L^Et)(NO₃)₃(MeOH)]·MeOH (1) with Na₂[tpa] (tpa = terephthalate and H₆L^Et is the [3 + 3] imine macrocycle derived from 1,4-diformyl-2,3-dihydroxybenzene and 1,2-diaminoethane) gives a structurally characterised one-dimensional cationic polymer {[CuTb^III(L^Et)(tpa)(H₂O)₃](NO₃)·0.5H₂O·0.25MeOH}_n (2). A comparative study of the static and dynamic magnetic properties of 2 and its precursor, 1, is reported.

Two-Component Self-Assemblies: Investigation of a Synergy between Bisurea Stickers

It is of interest to develop two-component systems for added flexibility in the design of supramolecular polymers, nanofibers, or organogels. Bisureas are known to self-assemble by hydrogen bonding into long supramolecular objects. We show here that mixing aromatic bisureas with slightly different structures can yield surprisingly large synergistic effects. A strong increase in viscosity is observed when a bisurea with the sterically demanding 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene spacer is combined with a bisurea bearing no methyl group in position 2 of the aromatic spacer (i.e., 4-methylbenzene or 4,6-dimethylbenzene). This effect is the consequence of a change in the supramolecular assembly triggered by the composition of the mixture. The mixture of complementary bisureas forms rodlike objects that are more stable by about 1 kJ/mol and that are thicker than the rodlike objects formed by both parent systems.

Synthesis and characterization of metallo-supramolecular polymers

The incorporation of metal centers into the backbone of polymers has led to the development of a broad range of organometallic and coordination compounds featuring properties that are relevant for potential applications in diverse areas of research, ranging from energy storage/conversion to bioactive or self-healing materials. In this review, the basic concepts and synthetic strategies leading to these types of materials as well as the scope of available characterization techniques will be summarized and discussed.

Twisted amide electrophiles enable cyclic peptide sequencing

There is an ever-increasing interest in synthetic methods that not only enable peptide macrocyclization, but also facilitate downstream application of the synthesized molecules. We have found that aziridine amides are stereoelectronically attenuated in a macrocyclic environment such that non-specific interactions with biological nucleophiles are reduced or even shut down. The electrophilic reactivity, revealed at high pH, enables peptide sequencing by mass spectrometry, which will further broaden the utility of aziridine amide-containing libraries of macrocycles.

Architectures and DFT calculations of polyrotaxane MOFs with nanoscale macrocycles

V. Synthesis of new fused heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via C–S and C–C bond formation by C–H bond activation in the presence of new Pd(ii) Schiff's base complexes

Pd(ii) Schiff base macrocyclic complexes are used as photocatalysts with high stability, C–S bond and intramolecular C–H bond activation under visible light irradiation.
