Fluid drag reduction and efficient self-cleaning with rice leaf and butterfly wing bioinspired surfaces

Unidirectional Droplet Transport on the Biofabricated Butterfly Wing

Water droplet unidirectional transport on the asymmetric superhydrophobic surface has attracted much interest in theory analysis and applications, such as self-cleaning, antifogging, anti-icing, heat transfer, and so on. Different from the symmetrical performance on the uniform topographies, the droplets acting on the asymmetric surface exhibit an anisotropic state and easily roll off the surface along the special direction. This phenomenon is indicated by natural butterfly wings. The flexible asymmetrically arranged microstep induces the droplet to release along the outside radial (RO) direction and to pin against the RO direction. Here, inspired by butterfly wings, a kind of surface for superhydrophobic and unidirectional droplet transport is achieved by integrating the methods of soft lithography and enhanced crystal growth. The water droplet shows the anisotropic state on the biofabricated surface, and it rolls off easily along the step direction. The droplet is unidirectionally driven off the surface by the asymmetric surface tension force generated by the microstep topography. This experiment is significant for designing self-cleaning surfaces.

Superhydrophobic plasmonic nanoarchitectures based on aluminum hydroxide nanotemplates

The combined characteristics of non-wettabililty and strong plasmonic resonances make superhydrophobic plasmonic nanostructures an appealing tool for ultrasensitive detection in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, inducing superhydrophobic surfaces on originally hydrophilic metals (e.g., gold, silver) while achieving high plasmonic enhancement requires sophisticated surface engineering and often involves complex fabrication processes. In this article, we design and fabricate cost effective and scalable plasmonic nanostructures with both superhydrophobicity (a water contact angle >160°) and high SERS signal (enhancement factor ≈106). Silver-coated aluminum hydroxide nanotemplates are obtained from a simple wet process, followed by thermal evaporation of silver nanoparticles. We find that the largest SERS enhancement is obtained when the contact angle is maximum. This confirms that the control of surface wettability is an effective way to improve detection sensitivity in SERS measurements. The nanotemplates developed in this study could be applied further in various applications, including microfluidic biomolecular optical sensors, photocatalysts, and optoelectronic devices.

Environmentally Friendly Super-Water-Repellent Fabrics Prepared from Water-Based Suspensions

We report on a facile, versatile, and environmentally friendly method to prepare superhydrophobic fabrics by a simple dip-coating method in water-based suspensions and emulsions. All the materials used are fluorine-free and commercially available at a large scale. The method can be easily integrated into standard textile industrial processes and has a strong potential for the mass production of environmentally friendly superwater-repellent fabrics. The produced fabrics show good resistance to machine washing and acidic or alkaline treatments. In addition, it is shown that superhydrophobicity can be quantitatively predicted based on the combination of the roughness of the fabric and of the fiber coating.

Variation of Goliathus orientalis (Moser, 1909) Elytra Nanostructurations and Their Impact on Wettability

Among the different species of flower beetles, there is one of particular notoriety: the Goliath beetle. This large insect can grow up to 11 cm long and is well-known for its distinctive black and white shield. In this paper, we focus on a particular Goliathus species: G. orientalis (Moser, 1909). We investigated the variations in properties of both the black and white parts of the upper face of G. orientalis; more precisely, the variation in surface properties with respect to the wettability of these two parts. This work reveals that the white parts of the shield have a higher hydrophobic character when compared to the black regions. While the black parts are slightly hydrophobic (θ = 91 ± 5°) and relatively smooth, the white parts are highly hydrophobic (θ = 130 ± 3°) with strong water adhesion (parahydrophobic); similar to the behavior observed for rose petals. Roughness and morphology analyses revealed significant differences between the two parts, and, hence, may explain the change in wettability. The white surfaces are covered with horizontally aligned nanohairs. Interestingly, vertically aligned microhairs are also present on the white surface. Furthermore, the surfaces of the microhairs are not smooth, they contain nanogrooves that are qualitatively similar to those observed in cactus spines. The nanogrooves may have an extremely important function regarding water harvesting, as they preferentially direct the migration of water droplets; this process could be mimicked in the future to capture and guide a large volume of water.

Sliding friction and contact angle hysteresis of droplets on microhole-structured surfaces

Microstructured surfaces with continuous solid topography have many potential applications in biology and industry. To understand the liquid transport property of microstructured surfaces with continuous solid topography, we studied the sliding behavior of a droplet on microhole-structured surfaces. We found that the sliding friction of the droplet increased with increasing solid area fraction due to enlarged apparent contact area and enhanced contact angle hysteresis. By introducing a correction factor to the modified Cassie-Baxter relation, we proposed an improved theoretical model to better predict the apparent receding contact angle. Our experimental data also revealed that the geometric topology of surface microstructures could affect the sliding friction with microhole-decorated surfaces, exhibiting a larger resistance than that for micropillar-decorated surfaces. Assisted by optical microscopy, we attributed this topology effect to the continuity and the true total length of the three-phase contact line at the receding edge during the sliding. Our study provides new insights into the liquid sliding behavior on microstructured surfaces with different topologies, which may help better design functional surfaces with special liquid transport properties.

Engineered bio-inspired coating for passive flow control

Flow separation on moving bodies has a negative effect on energy efficiency. Reducing recirculating regions is key in the design of energy-efficient systems. Efficient design decreases fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, including the systems’ carbon footprint. The engineered bio-inspired coating presented here aims to contribute in that direction. The relative ease of manufacturing and installation and its cost effectiveness, as well as its functionality under both wet and dry conditions, make it a versatile solution of potentially high impact in a broad range of applications, including transportation, wind power, and underwater vehicles.

Flow separation and vortex shedding are some of the most common phenomena experienced by bluff bodies under relative motion with the surrounding medium. They often result in a recirculation bubble in regions with adverse pressure gradient, which typically reduces efficiency in vehicles and increases loading on structures. Here, the ability of an engineered coating to manipulate the large-scale recirculation region was tested in a separated flow at moderate momentum thickness Reynolds number, Reθ=1,200. We show that the coating, composed of uniformly distributed cylindrical pillars with diverging tips, successfully reduces the size of, and shifts downstream, the separation bubble. Despite the so-called roughness parameter, k+≈1, falling within the hydrodynamic smooth regime, the coating is able to modulate the large-scale recirculating motion. Remarkably, this modulation does not induce noticeable changes in the near-wall turbulence levels. Supported with experimental data and theoretical arguments based on the averaged equations of motion, we suggest that the inherent mechanism responsible for the bubble modulation is essentially unsteady suction and blowing controlled by the increasing cross-section of the tips. The coating can be easily fabricated and installed and works under dry and wet conditions, increasing its potential impact on a diverse range of applications.

Bioinspired Diatomite Membrane with Selective Superwettability for Oil/Water Separation

Membranes with selective superwettability for oil/water separation have received significant attention during the past decades. Hierarchical structures and surface roughness are believed to improve the oil repellency and the stability of Cassie-Baxter state. Diatoms, unicellular photosynthetic algae, possess sophisticated skeletal shells (called frustules) which are made of hydrated silica. Motivated by the hierarchical micro- and nanoscale features of diatom, we fabricate a hierarchical diatomite membrane which consists of aligned micro-sized channels by the freeze casting process. The fine nano-porous structures of frustules are well preserved after the post sintering process. The bioinspired diatomite membrane performs both underwater superoleophobicity and superhydrophobicity under various oils. Additionally, we demonstrate the highly efficient oil/water separation capabililty of the membranes in various harsh environments. The water flux can be further adjusted by tuning the cooling rates. The eco-friendly and robust bioinspired membranes produced by the simple, cost-effective freeze casting method can be potentially applied for large scale and efficient oil/water separation.

Fabrication of Mechanically Stable Superhydrophobic Aluminium Surface with Excellent Self-Cleaning and Anti-Fogging Properties

The development of a self-cleaning and anti-fogging superhydrophobic coating for aluminium surfaces that is durable in aggressive conditions has raised tremendous interest in materials science. In this work, a superhydrophobic Al surface was synthesized by employing chemical etching technique with a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids, followed by passivation with lauric acid. The surface morphology analysis revealed the presence of rough microstructures on the coated Al surface. Superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 170 ± 3.9° and sliding angle of 4 ± 0.5° was achieved. The surface bounced off the high-speed water jet, indicating the excellent water-repellent nature of the coating. It also continuously floated on a water surface for four weeks, showing its excellent buoyancy. Additionally, the coating maintained its superhydrophobicity after undergoing 100 cycles of adhesive tape peeling test. Its superhydrophobic nature withstood 90° and 180° bending and repeated folding and de-folding. The coating exhibits an excellent self-cleaning property. In a low temperature condensation test, almost no accumulation of water drops on the surface showed the excellent anti-fogging property of the coating. This approach can be applied to any size and shape of Al surface, and hence has great industrial applications.

A Review on Development and Applications of Bio-Inspired Superhydrophobic Textiles

Bio-inspired engineering has been envisioned in a wide array of applications. All living bodies on Earth, including animals and plants, have well organized functional systems developed by nature. These naturally designed functional systems inspire scientists and engineers worldwide to mimic the system for practical applications by human beings. Researchers in the academic world and industries have been trying, for hundreds of years, to demonstrate how these natural phenomena could be translated into the real world to save lives, money and time. One of the most fascinating natural phenomena is the resistance of living bodies to contamination by dust and other pollutants, thus termed as self-cleaning phenomenon. This phenomenon has been observed in many plants, animals and insects and is termed as the Lotus Effect. With advancement in research and technology, attention has been given to the exploration of the underlying mechanisms of water repellency and self-cleaning. As a result, various concepts have been developed including Young's equation, and Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter theories. The more we unravel this process, the more we get access to its implications and applications. A similar pursuit is emphasized in this review to explain the fundamental principles, mechanisms, past experimental approaches and ongoing research in the development of bio-inspired superhydrophobic textiles.

Recent developments in polydopamine: an emerging soft matter for surface modification and biomedical applications

After more than four billion years of evolution, nature has created a large number of fascinating living organisms, which show numerous peculiar structures and wonderful properties. Nature can provide sources of plentiful inspiration for scientists to create various materials and devices with special functions and uses. Since Messersmith proposed the fabrication of multifunctional coatings through mussel-inspired chemistry, this field has attracted considerable attention for its promising and exiciting applications. Polydopamine (PDA), an emerging soft matter, has been demonstrated to be a crucial component in mussel-inspired chemistry. In this review, the recent developments of PDA for mussel-inspired surface modification are summarized and discussed. The biomedical applications of PDA-based materials are also highlighted. We believe that this review can provide important and timely information regarding mussel-inspired chemistry and will be of great interest for scientists in the chemistry, materials, biology, medicine and interdisciplinary fields.

Bioinspired materials for water supply and management: water collection, water purification and separation of water from oil

Access to a safe supply of water is a human right. However, with growing populations, global warming and contamination due to human activity, it is one that is increasingly under threat. It is hoped that nature can inspire the creation of materials to aid in the supply and management of water, from water collection and purification to water source clean-up and rehabilitation from oil contamination. Many species thrive in even the driest places, with some surviving on water harvested from fog. By studying these species, new materials can be developed to provide a source of fresh water from fog for communities across the globe. The vast majority of water on the Earth is in the oceans. However, current desalination processes are energy-intensive. Systems in our own bodies have evolved to transport water efficiently while blocking other molecules and ions. Inspiration can be taken from such to improve the efficiency of desalination and help purify water containing other contaminants. Finally, oil contamination of water from spills or the fracking technique can be a devastating environmental disaster. By studying how natural surfaces interact with liquids, new techniques can be developed to clean up oil spills and further protect our most precious resource.This article is part of the themed issue 'Bioinspired hierarchically structured surfaces for green science'.

Bioarchitecture: bioinspired art and architecture--a perspective

Art and architecture can be an obvious choice to pair with science though historically this has not always been the case. This paper is an attempt to interact across disciplines, define a new genre, bioarchitecture, and present opportunities for further research, collaboration and professional cooperation. Biomimetics, or the copying of living nature, is a field that is highly interdisciplinary, involving the understanding of biological functions, structures and principles of various objects found in nature by scientists. Biomimetics can lead to biologically inspired design, adaptation or derivation from living nature. As applied to engineering, bioinspiration is a more appropriate term, involving interpretation, rather than direct copying. Art involves the creation of discrete visual objects intended by their creators to be appreciated by others. Architecture is a design practice that makes a theoretical argument and contributes to the discourse of the discipline. Bioarchitecture is a blending of art/architecture and biomimetics/bioinspiration, and incorporates a bioinspired design from the outset in all parts of the work at all scales. Herein, we examine various attempts to date of art and architecture to incorporate bioinspired design into their practice, and provide an outlook and provocation to encourage collaboration among scientists and designers, with the aim of achieving bioarchitecture.This article is part of the themed issue 'Bioinspired hierarchically structured surfaces for green science'.

Recent Advances in TiO2 -Based Nanostructured Surfaces with Controllable Wettability and Adhesion

Bioinspired surfaces with special wettability and adhesion have attracted great interest in both fundamental research and industry applications. Various kinds of special wetting surfaces have been constructed by adjusting the topographical structure and chemical composition. Here, recent progress of the artificial superhydrophobic surfaces with high contrast in solid/liquid adhesion has been reviewed, with a focus on the bioinspired construction and applications of one-dimensional (1D) TiO2-based surfaces. In addition, the significant applications related to artificial super-wetting/antiwetting TiO2-based structure surfaces with controllable adhesion are summarized, e.g., self-cleaning, friction reduction, anti-fogging/icing, microfluidic manipulation, fog/water collection, oil/water separation, anti-bioadhesion, and micro-templates for patterning. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of this renascent and rapidly developing field, especially with regard to 1D TiO2-based surfaces with special wettability and adhesion, are proposed and discussed.

Texture and wettability of metallic lotus leaves

Superhydrophobic surfaces with the self-cleaning behavior of lotus leaves are sought for drag reduction and phase change heat transfer applications. These superrepellent surfaces have traditionally been fabricated by random or deterministic texturing of a hydrophobic material. Recently, superrepellent surfaces have also been made from hydrophilic materials, by deterministic texturing using photolithography, without low-surface energy coating. Here, we show that hydrophilic materials can also be made superrepellent to water by chemical texturing, a stochastic rather than deterministic process. These metallic surfaces are the first analog of lotus leaves, in terms of wettability, texture and repellency. A mechanistic model is also proposed to describe the influence of multiple tiers of roughness on wettability and repellency. This demonstrated ability to make hydrophilic materials superrepellent without deterministic structuring or additional coatings opens the way to large scale and robust manufacturing of superrepellent surfaces.

A Superhydrophobic Surface Templated by Protein Self-Assembly and Emerging Application toward Protein Crystallization

A proteinaceous superhydrophobic material for facile protein crystallization is reported. The lysozyme phase transition is rationally manipulated to form a reliable superhydrophobic coating on virtually arbitrary material surfaces with good thermostability and mechanical robustness. Such a surface exhibits a fascinating capability to drive protein crystallization, and the protein crystal array can be facilitated in a large area at an ultralow protein concentration.

Rapid deposition of superhydrophilic stalagmite-like protrusions for underwater selective superwettability

Hierarchically stalagmite-like tungsten-oxide protrusions on stainless steel mesh exhibited superior selective superwettability toward low surface tension oils under harsh environments.

Recent advances in engineering topography mediated antibacterial surfaces

The tendency of bacterial cells to adhere and colonize a material surface leading to biofilm formation is a fundamental challenge underlying many different applications including microbial infections associated with biomedical devices and products. Although, bacterial attachment to surfaces has been extensively studied in the past, the effect of surface topography on bacteria-material interactions has received little attention until more recently. We review the recent progress in surface topography based approaches for engineering antibacterial surfaces. Biomimicry of antibacterial surfaces in nature is a popular strategy. Whereas earlier endeavors in the field aimed at minimizing cell attachment, more recent efforts have focused on developing bactericidal surfaces. However, not all such topography mediated bactericidal surfaces are necessarily cytocompatible thus underscoring the need for continued efforts for research in this area for developing antibacterial and yet cytocompatible surfaces for use in implantable biomedical applications. This mini-review provides a brief overview of the current strategies and challenges in the emerging field of topography mediated antibacterial surfaces.

Boundary layer drag reduction research hypotheses derived from bio-inspired surface and recent advanced applications

Nature has supplied the inexhaustible resources for mankind, and at the same time, it has also progressively developed into the school for scientists and engineers. Through more than four billions years of rigorous and stringent evolution, different creatures in nature gradually exhibit their own special and fascinating biological functional surfaces. For example, sharkskin has the potential drag-reducing effect in turbulence, lotus leaf possesses the self-cleaning and anti-foiling function, gecko feet have the controllable super-adhesion surfaces, the flexible skin of dolphin can accelerate its swimming velocity. Great profits of applying biological functional surfaces in daily life, industry, transportation and agriculture have been achieved so far, and much attention from all over the world has been attracted and focused on this field. In this overview, the bio-inspired drag-reducing mechanism derived from sharkskin is explained and explored comprehensively from different aspects, and then the main applications in different fluid engineering are demonstrated in brief. This overview will inevitably improve the comprehension of the drag reduction mechanism of sharkskin surface and better understand the recent applications in fluid engineering.

Transferrable superhydrophobic TiO2 nanorods on reduced graphene oxide films using block copolymer templates

Superhydrophobic surfaces are normally fixed on the chosen materials. Here, we report transferrable superhydrophobicity which was enabled by fabricating TiO2 nanorods on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film. Superhydrophobic TiO2 nanorods were first synthesized from a nanoporous template of block copolymers (BCPs). The controllability over the dimension and shape of nanopores of the BCP template allowed for the adjustment of TiO2 nanostructures for superhydrophobicity. Since the rGO film provided effective transferring, TiO2 nanorods were conveyed onto a flexible polymer film and a metal substrate. Thus, the surface of the designated substrate was successfully changed to a superhydrophobic surface without alteration of its inherent characteristics.

Surface adhesive forces: a metric describing the drag-reducing effects of superhydrophobic coatings

Nanomaterials with superhydrophobic properties are promising as drag-reducing coatings. However, debates regarding whether superhydrophobic surfaces are favorable for drag reduction require further clarification. A quantified water adhesive force measurement is proposed as a metric and its effectiveness demonstrated using three typical superhydrophobic coatings on model ships with in situ sailing tests.

Superwettability controlled overflow

Superwettability controlled overflow is presented. Superhydrophilicity enhances overflow and superhydrophobicity reduces overflow. The fundamental mechanism for the dynamic interaction between fluids and solid-edges is revealed and several methods for preparing the surfaces of solid-edges with superwettabilities are presented. The insights gained provide new opportunities to achieve controllable dynamic interaction at solid-liquid interfaces for various applications.

Mechanically durable, superoleophobic coatings prepared by layer-by-layer technique for anti-smudge and oil-water separation

Superoleophobic surfaces are of interest for anti-fouling, self-cleaning, anti-smudge, low-drag, anti-fog, and oil-water separation applications. Current bioinspired surfaces are of limited use due to a lack of mechanical durability. A so-called layer-by-layer approach, involving charged species with electrostatic interactions between layers, can provide the flexibility needed to improve adhesion to the substrate while providing a low surface tension coating at the air interface. In this work, a polyelectrolyte binder, SiO₂ nanoparticles, and a fluorosurfactant are spray deposited separately to create a durable, superoleophobic coating. Polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) polyelectrolyte was complexed with a fluorosurfactant layer (FL), which provides oil repellency while being hydrophilic. This oleophobic/superhydrophilic behavior was enhanced through the use of roughening with SiO₂ particles resulting in a superoleophobic coating with hexadecane contact angles exceeding 155° and tilt angles of less than 4°. The coating is also superhydrophilic, which is desirable for oil-water separation applications. The durability of these coatings was examined through the use of micro- and macrowear experiments. These coatings currently display characteristics of transparency. Fabrication of these coatings via the layer-by-layer technique results in superoleophobic surfaces displaying improved durability compared to existing work where either the durability or the oil-repellency is compromised.

Wear-resistant and antismudge superoleophobic coating on polyethylene terephthalate substrate using SiO2 nanoparticles

It is of interest to create superoleophobic surfaces that exhibit high oil contact angle, low contact angle hysteresis, high wear resistance, antismudge properties, and optical transparency for industrial applications. In the superoleophobic surfaces developed to date, the mechanical durability data is lacking. By dip-coating polyethylene terephthalate substrate with hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles and methylphenyl silicone resin, followed by O2 plasma treatment and vapor deposition of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane, a durable superoleophobic surface was fabricated. The degree of superoleophobicity was found to be dependent on the particle-to-binder ratio. The coatings were found to exhibit wear resistance on microscale and macroscale, antismudge properties, and transparency.

Liquid body formation from a semispherical superhydrophobic well on a small incline

In this work, drop formation on a slightly inclined superhydrophobic substrate with liquid at various flow rates delivered through a semispherical well was investigated. Due to the initial dry well condition in the first drop produced, the inertial force from liquid filling allowed the well's edge hysteresis to be more readily breached, in which flow rates of 16 mL/min and above could create a jet that appeared to be able to "pierce" through the top of the semispherical drop without disrupting its form and growth very much. For subsequent drops, the well's edge hysteresis at flow rates of 14 mL/min and above helped to support an "egg" like form. In contrast, this form could not be developed on a similarly inclined superhydrophobic substrate without a well. The findings here assist to establish the flow rate ranges for consistent discrete volume delivery in biochemical analysis and serves as a means to conduct investigations to better reconcile the tendency of liquids to assume drops or develop jets.
