A Multifunctional Hybrid[4]arene-Based Macrocyclic Amphiphile: Self-Assembly, Tunable LCST Behavior, and Construction of Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Cell Imaging

A novel macrocyclic amphiphile based on hybrid[4]arene containing tri(ethylene glycol) chains as the hydrophilic part and benzene rings as the hydrophobic part was synthesized. It self-assembled to produce nanoparticles and showed lower critical solution temperature behavior that was affected by its concentration and K⁺. Moreover, amphiphilic H can encapsulate dye G to form host-guest complexes H⊃G, accompanied by significant fluorescence enhancement. H⊃G can further self-assemble to form fluorescent nanoparticles that can be applied in cell imaging.

Highly selective Fe3+ and F-/H2PO4- sensor based on a water-soluble cationic pillar[5]arene with aggregation-induced emission characteristic

A water-soluble cationic pillar[5]arene (CWP5) without lager conjugated construction was first reported as a novel pillar[5]arene-based aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), which showed a remarkable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with the concentration increasing. The AIE effect of CWP5 has affected by different solvent, it had the lowest critical aggregation concentration (CAC) value and highest fluoresence emission intensity in DMSO solution. Simultaneously, CWP5 can serve as a chemosensor for the successively fluorescent detection of Fe³⁺ and F^-/H₂PO₄^- with high sensitivity and selectivity. A rewritable portable test kit made from CWP5 provides a possibility to on-site detection and manufacture of encryption and decryption materials.

Novel cyanide supramolecular fluorescent chemosensor constructed from a quinoline hydrazone functionalized-pillar[5]arene

Herein, we report a simple and novel approach for the design of fluorescent chemosensor through the self-assembly of functionalized monomer molecules. According to these approach, a novel supramolecular fluorescent chemosensor (SPMS) was successfully constructed by self-assembly of a quinoline hydrazone functionalized pillar[5]arene monomer PM. Interestingly, upon the addition of CN^-, the solution of SPMS instantly shows dramatic fluorescent enhancement and emitting bright blue emission. Meanwhile, the fluorescence quantum yields show distinct increase from 0.0582 of SPMS to 0.3952 of SPMS + CN^-. The detection limit (LOD) of SPMS for CN^- is 9.70 × 10^-8 M, which indicated high sensitivity. Moreover, the SPMS is selective for CN^- even in the presence of other anions, the fluorescent detection process of SPMS for CN^- was not interfered by other competitive anions (F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, N₃^-, OH^-, SCN^-, HSO₄^-, AcO^-, H₂PO₄^- and ClO₄^-). Notably, in the CN^- sensing process, the self-assembly structure of the supramolecular chemosensor SPMS didn't show any disassembly. This work provides a novel approach for instant detection of CN^- through a self-assembled supramolecular fluorescent chemosensor in aqueous system. Moreover, the test strips based on SPMS were fabricated, which could serve as convenient and efficient CN^- test kits.

Efficient Aggregation-Induced Emission Manipulated by Polymer Host Materials

Linear copolymer hosts bearing a number of pillar[5]arene dangling side chains are synthesized for the facile construction of highly emissive supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) upon noncovalently cross-linking with a series of tetraphenyethylene (TPE)-based tetratopic guests terminated with different functional groups through supramolecular host-guest interactions. An extremely high fluorescence quantum yield (98.22%) of the SPNs materials is obtained in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by fine-tuning the parameters, and meanwhile supramolecular light-harvesting systems based on spherical supramolecular nanoparticles are constructed by interweaving 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) and TPE-based guest molecules of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with the copolymer hosts in the mixed solvent of THF/H₂ O. The present study not only illustrates the restriction of the intramolecular rotations (RIR)-ruled emission enhancement mechanism regulated particularly by macrocyclic arene-containing copolymer hosts, but also suggests a new self-assembly approach to construct high-performance light-harvesting materials.

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene-based multi-stimuli responsive supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel for effective adsorption of rhodamine B

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene was designed and synthesized by the reaction of aldehyde functionalized-pillar[5]arene and hydrazine. Then, a novel bispillar[5]arene-based supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane has been successfully prepared via host-guest interaction. Interestingly, by taking advantage of the host-guest interactions, π-π stacking interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions, the multi-stimuli-responsive gel-sol phase transitions of such a supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel were successfully realized under different stimuli, such as acid, temperature, concentration, and competitive guests. Moreover, this supramolecular system could effectively adsorb dye molecule rhodamine B. It is worth noting that this supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in cyclohexanol solution (BP5·G·C) could be used as an adsorbent material for adsorbing rhodamine B with adsorption efficiency of 98.4%. Meanwhile, the adsorption efficiency was 97.6% for supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in DMSO-H2O (v : v, 8 : 2) binary solution (BP5·G·D), also indicating the superior adsorption effect of BP5·G·D toward the dye molecule rhodamine B.

Aggregation-Caused Quenching-Type Naphthalimide Fluorophores Grafted and Ionized in a 3D Polymeric Hydrogel Network for Highly Fluorescent and Locally Tunable Emission

Polymer hydrogels with intense yet tunable fluorescence are of great research interest due to their wide potential use in biological imaging, sensing, information storage, etc. However, the conventional fluorophores such as naphthalimide and its derivatives are usually not recommended to prepare highly fluorescent hydrogels because of their aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) nature and spontaneous tendency to undergo fluorescence self-quenching in quasi-solid-state hydrogel systems. Additionally, local regulation over fluorescent behavior of hydrogels, despite being important, still remains underdeveloped. Herein, we report highly fluorescent polymeric hydrogels based on conventional ACQ-type naphthalimide fluorophores, followed by spatial and temporal control of their fluorescent behavior. The hydrogels were prepared by one-pot radical copolymerization of naphthalimide-containing monomer and acrylamide in chitosan-acetic acid solution. Their intense emission comes from synergetic anchoring and diluting effect of the protonated naphthalimide moieties grafted on polymer chains, which result in the electrostatic repulsion among ACQ luminogens and reduced PET (photoinduced electron transfer) effect from adjacent dimethylamine groups to naphthalimide fluorophores. After being deprotonated in alkaline conditions, both PET and the ACQ effect work again to greatly quench fluorescence, endowing the hydrogels with pH-sensitive emission behavior. These properties encourage us to develop a diffusion-reaction (D-R) method to spatially and temporally control their fluorescent behavior. Based on these results, the ion-transfer-printing-assisted D-R method was further developed to fabricate many high-precision and meaningful fluorescent patterns on hydrogels. These fluorescent patterns are invisible under daylight but become vivid under specific UV light illumination, suggesting their wide potential applications in information security and transmission.

Biological Macrocycle: Supramolecular Hydrophobic Guest Transport System Based on Nanodiscs with Photodynamic Activity

A biogenic macrocycle-based guest loading system has been developed by the self-assembly of membrane scaffold protein and phospholipids. The resulting 10 nm level transport system can increase the solubility of hydrophobic photodynamic agent hypocrellin B in aqueous medium and exhibited a cellular internalization capacity with substantial photodynamic activity.

Supramolecular Gel Based on Crown-Ether-Appended Dynamic Covalent Macrocycles

A new type of dynamic covalent macrocycle with self-promoted supramolecular gelation behavior is developed. Under oxidative conditions, the dithiol compound containing a diamide alkyl linker with an odd number (7) of carbon chain and an appended crown ether shows a remarkable gelation ability in acetonitrile, without any template molecules. Due to the existence of crown ethers and disulfide bonds, the obtained gel shows a multiple stimuli-responsiveness behavior. The mechanical properties and reversibility of the gel are investigated. Computational modeling suggests that the peripheral chain for diamide hydrogen bonding is responsible for the gelation process.

A Fluorescence Sensing Determination of 2, 4, 6-Trinitrophenol Based on Cationic Water-Soluble Pillar[6]arene Graphene Nanocomposite

We describe a selective and sensitive fluorescence platform for the detection of trinitrophenol (TNP) based on competitive host–guest recognition between pyridine-functionalized pillar[6]arene (PCP6) and a probe (acridine orange, AO) that used PCP6-functionalized reduced graphene (PCP6-rGO) as the receptor. TNP is an electron-deficient and negative molecule, which is captured by PCP6 via electrostatic interactions and π–π interactions. Therefore, a selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for TNP detection is developed. It has a low detection limit of 0.0035 μM (S/N = 3) and a wider linear response of 0.01–5.0 and 5.0–125.0 for TNP. The sensing platform is also used to test TNP in two water and soil samples with satisfying results. This suggests that this approach has potential applications for the determination of TNP.

Multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular gel constructed by pillar[5]arene-based pseudorotaxanes for efficient detection and separation of multi-analytes in aqueous solution

Here, a novel pseudorotaxanes-type crosslinker of a supramolecular polymer network (WP5-PN) has been constructed from a host water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5) and a guest naphthalene dimethylamine derivative (PN) via a stepwise process involving multiple non-covalent interactions. The obtained supramolecular polymers were able to transform into a supramolecular polymer gel (WP5-PN-G) and show AIE properties in DMSO-H2O binary solution. Interestingly, due to the dynamic and reversible nature of non-covalent interactions, the resultant supramolecular polymer gels exhibited external stimuli-responsiveness to different parameters, such as temperature, acid-base, competitive guest and mechanical stress. Moreover, WP5-PN-G showed fluorescent response for Fe3+ and Cu2+, while its xerogel showed excellent recyclable separation properties for these metal ions with adsorption rates up to 98.07% and 95.38%, respectively. Moreover, by rational introduction of these metal ions into the WP5-PN-G, corresponding metal ion coordinated metallogels, such as WP5-PN-FeG and WP5-PN-CuG were obtained. These metallogels could selectively and sensitively sense F- and CN-, respectively. The detection limits of these metallogels for F- and CN- were about 1 × 10-8 M. The WP5-PN-G has potential applications in multi-analytes detection and separation as well as fluorescent display materials.

Stronger host–guest binding does not necessarily give brighter particles: a case study on polymeric AIEE-tunable and size-tunable supraspheres

Compared with the tritopic guest without chains, the tritopic guest with flexible alkyl chains bound to the polymeric host more strongly and induced the formation of larger but duller supraspheres.
