Light-Mediated Carboxylation Using Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide is a green and sustainable one-carbon source, which could be utilized in the production of various fine chemicals. In recent studies, the light-mediated carboxylation employing CO₂ has received considerable attention. The photocarboxylation of substrates with CO₂ to build novel C-C bonds is introduced in this Minireview. The article is arranged based on the light-driven reactive intermediates, including CO₂ radical anion, substrate radical anions, carbanions, and M-C species. Most of the cases are under the topic of photoredox catalysis, with single electron transfer as the main driving force. Some non-catalytic examples are also discussed to provide more mechanistic insights.

Merging Electrosynthesis and Bifunctional Squaramide Catalysis in the Asymmetric Detrifluoroacetylative Alkylation Reactions

An enantioselective bifunctional squaramide-catalyzed detrifluoroacetylative alkylation reaction has been developed under electrochemical conditions. The unified strategy based on this key tandem methodology has been divergently explored for the asymmetric synthesis of fluorine-containing target molecules with good stereocontrol (up to 95 % ee). Furthermore, this asymmetric catalytic reaction combines the benefits of electrosynthesis and organocatalysis for the preparation of biologically relevant products containing C-F tertiary stereogenic centers.

Electrochemical asymmetric synthesis of biologically active substances

Electrically driven oxidation and reduction reactions are well-established methods for synthesis even in the chemical industry, but asymmetric versions are still few. The mild conditions used, atom efficiency and low cost make these reactions a very attractive alternative to other methods of synthesis. Very fine tuning can be achieved based on minute changes in potentials, allowing only one functional group in a molecule to react in the presence of several others, which is ideal for applications in total synthesis. In this review, the literature in the field of asymmetric synthesis of biologically active substances over the last 10 years is surveyed.

Recent Advances in Asymmetric Catalytic Electrosynthesis

The renewed interest in electrosynthesis demonstrated by organic chemists in the last years has allowed for rapid development of new methodologies. In this review, advances in enantioselective electrosynthesis that rely on catalytic amounts of organic or metal-based chiral mediators are highlighted with focus on the most recent developments up to July 2020. Examples of C-H functionalization, alkene functionalization, carboxylation and cross-electrophile couplings are discussed, along with their related mechanistic aspects.

Electroreductive Cobalt-Catalyzed Carboxylation: Cross-Electrophile Electrocoupling with Atmospheric CO2

The chemical use of CO2 as an inexpensive, nontoxic C1 synthon is of utmost topical interest in the context of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). We present the merger of cobalt catalysis and electrochemical synthesis for mild catalytic carboxylations of allylic chlorides with CO2 . Styrylacetic acid derivatives were obtained with moderate to good yields and good functional group tolerance. The thus-obtained products are useful as versatile synthons of γ-arylbutyrolactones. Cyclic voltammetry and in operando kinetic analysis were performed to provide mechanistic insights into the electrocatalytic carboxylation with CO2 .

Reductive Coupling of Carbon Dioxide and an Aldehyde Mediated by a Copper(I) Complex toward the Synthesis of α-Hydroxycarboxylic Acids

Copper-mediated reductive coupling between CO₂ and an aldehyde to form α-hydroxycarboxylic acid was achieved using silylborane as a reductant. CO₂ cleanly inserted into a copper-carbon bond that was formed by the reaction between a silylcopper-NHC complex and an aldehyde. A series of reactions that regenerate the silylcopper complex were developed for the synthesis of an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid. After repeating each step iteratively for two cycles, 0.62 equiv of α-hydroxycarboxylic acid based on the copper complex was obtained.

Site-Selective C-H Functionalization via Synergistic Use of Electrochemistry and Transition Metal Catalysis

Electrochemical synthesis of organic compounds has emerged as an attractive and environmentally benign alternative to conventional approaches for oxidation and reduction of organic compounds that utilizes electric current instead of chemical oxidants and reductants. As such, many useful transformations have been developed, including the Kolbe reaction, the Simons fluorination process, the Monsanto adiponitrile process, and the Shono oxidation, to name a few. Electrochemical C-H functionalization represents one of the most promising reaction types among many electrochemical transformations, since this process avoids prefunctionalization of substrates and provides novel retrosynthetic disconnections. However, site-selective anodic oxidation of C-H bonds is still a fundamental challenge due to the high oxidation potentials of C-H bonds compared to organic solvents and common functional groups. To overcome this issue, indirect electrolysis via the action of a mediator (a redox catalyst) is regularly employed, by which the selectivity can be controlled following reaction of said mediator with the substrate. Since the redox potentials of transition metal complexes can be easily tuned by modification of the ligand, the synergistic use of electrochemistry and transition metal catalysis to achieve site-selective C-H functionalization is an attractive strategy. In this Account, we summarize and contextualize our recent efforts toward transition metal-catalyzed electrochemical C-H functionalization proximal to a suitable directing group. We have developed C-H oxygenation, acylation, alkylation, and halogenation reactions in which a Pd(II) species is oxidized to a Pd(III) or Pd(IV) intermediate by anodic oxidation, followed by reductive elimination to form the corresponding C-O, C-C, and C-X bonds. Importantly, improved monofunctionalization selectivity is achieved in the Pd-catalyzed C(sp³)-H oxygenation compared to conventional approaches using PhI(OAc)₂ as the chemical oxidant. Physical separators are sometimes used to prevent the electrochemical deposition of Pd black on the cathode resulting from reduction of high valent Pd species. We skirted this issue through the development a Cu-catalyzed electrochemical C(sp²)-H amination using n-Bu₄NI as a redox cocatalyst in an undivided cell. In addition, we developed Ir-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C-H functionalization of acrylic acids with alkynes in an undivided cell, affording various substituted α-pyrones in good to excellent yield. More importantly, chemical oxidants, including Ag₂CO₃, Cu(OAc)₂, and PhI(OAc)₂, resulted in much lower yields in the absence of electrical current under otherwise identical conditions. As elaborated below, progress in the area of electrochemical transition metal-catalyzed synthesis provides an effective platform for environmentally friendly and sustainable selective chemical transformations.

Electrochemical nickel-catalyzed Migita cross-coupling of 1-thiosugars with aryl, alkenyl and alkynyl bromides

An efficient electrochemical route towards the synthesis of thioglycosides is reported. This approach involves a S–C cross-coupling from protected and unprotected thiosugars with aryl bromides under base free conditions.

Catalytic enantioselective synthesis using carbon dioxide as a C1 synthon

This review summarizes the advances in catalytic enantioselective reactions using CO₂ as a C1 synthon, introduces strategies and discusses advantages and limitations, highlights the application, and outlines the synthetic opportunities.

Carboxylation Reactions Using Carbon Dioxide as the C1 Source via Catalytically Generated Allyl Metal Intermediates

The use of carbon dioxide (CO₂) is an important issue with regard to current climate research and the Earth's environment. Transition metal-catalyzed carboxylation reactions using CO₂ are highly attractive. This review summarizes the transition metal-catalyzed carboxylation reactions of organic substrates with CO₂ via allyl metal intermediates. First, carboxylation reactions via transmetalation are reviewed. Second, catalytic carboxylation reactions using allyl electrophiles and suitable reducing agents are summarized. The last section discusses the catalytic carboxylation reactions via addition reactions, affording allyl metal intermediates.

Nickel-Catalyzed Carboxylation of Aryl and Heteroaryl Fluorosulfates Using Carbon Dioxide

The development of efficient and practical methods to construct carboxylic acids using CO₂ as a C1 synthon is of great importance. Nickel-catalyzed carboxylation of aryl fluorosulfates and heteroaryl fluorosulfates with CO₂ is described, affording arene carboxylic acids with good to excellent yields under mild conditions. In addition, a one-pot phenol fluorosulfation/carboxylation is developed.

Silver encapsulated copper salen complex: efficient catalyst for electrocarboxylation of cinnamyl chloride with CO2

An active catalyst, [Cu]@Ag composite, was synthesized for the first time and used as a cathode for electrocarboxylation of cinnamyl chloride with CO₂. β,γ-Unsaturated carboxylic acids were obtained with excellent yield and moderate selectivity. Moreover, reasonable yields and selectivities of carboxylic acids were also achieved with several allylic halides and aryl halides.
