Nanobubbles: a new paradigm for air-seeding in xylem

Long-distance water transport in plants relies on a system that typically operates under negative pressure and is prone to hydraulic failure due to gas bubble formation. One primary mechanism of bubble formation takes place at nanoporous pit membranes between neighboring conduits. We argue that this process is likely to snap off nanobubbles because the local increase in liquid pressure caused by entry of air-water menisci into the complex pit membrane pores would energetically favor nanobubble formation over instant cavitation. Nanobubbles would be stabilized by surfactants and by gas supersaturation of the sap, may dissolve, fragment into smaller bubbles, or create embolisms. The hypothesis that safe and stable nanobubbles occur in plants adds a new component supporting the cohesion-tension theory.

Quantification of bulk solution limits for liquid and interfacial transport in nanoconfinements

Liquid imbibition, the capillary-pressure-driven flow of a liquid into a gas, provides a mechanism for studying the effects of solid-liquid and solid-liquid-gas interfaces on nanoscale transport. Deviations from the classic Washburn equation for imbibition are generally observed for nanoscale imbibition, but the identification of the origin of these irregularities in terms of transport variables varies greatly among investigators. We present an experimental method and corresponding image and data analysis scheme that enable the determination of independent effective values of nanoscale capillary pressure, liquid viscosity, and interfacial gas partitioning coefficients, all critical transport variables, from imbibition within nanochannels. Experiments documented herein are performed within two-dimensional siliceous nanochannels of varying size and as small as 30 nm × 60 nm in cross section. The wetting fluid used is the organic solvent isopropanol and the nonwetting fluid is air, but investigations are not limited to these fluids. Optical data of dynamic flow are rare in geometries that are nanoscale in two dimensions due to the limited resolution of optical microscopy. We are able to capture tracer-free liquid imbibition with reflected differential interference contrast microscopy. Results with isopropanol show a significant departure from bulk transport values in the nanochannels: reduced capillary pressures, increased liquid viscosity, and nonconstant interfacial mass-transfer coefficients. The findings equate to the nucleation of structured, quasi-crystalline boundary layers consistently ∼10-25 nm in extent. This length is far thicker than the boundary layer range prescribed by long-range intermolecular force interactions. Slower but linear imbibition in some experimental cases suggests that structured boundary layers may inhibit viscous drag at confinement walls for critical nanochannel dimensions. Probing the effects of nanoconfinement on the definitions of capillary pressure, viscosity, and interfacial mass transfer is critical in determining and improving the functionality and fluid transport efficacy of geological, biological, and synthetic nanoporous media and materials.

Nanofluidic transport governed by the liquid/vapour interface

Liquid/vapour interfaces govern the behaviour of a wide range of systems but remain poorly understood, leaving ample margin for the exploitation of intriguing functionalities for applications. Here, we systematically investigate the role of liquid/vapour interfaces in the transport of water across apposing liquid menisci in osmosis membranes comprising short hydrophobic nanopores that separate two fluid reservoirs. We show experimentally that mass transport is limited by molecular reflection from the liquid/vapour interface below a certain length scale, which depends on the transmission probability of water molecules across the nanopores and on the condensation probability of a water molecule incident on the liquid surface. This fundamental yet elusive condensation property of water is measured under near-equilibrium conditions and found to decrease from 0.36 ± 0.21 at 30 °C to 0.18 ± 0.09 at 60 °C. These findings define the regime in which liquid/vapour interfaces govern nanofluidic transport and have implications for understanding mass transport in nanofluidic devices, droplets and bubbles, biological components and porous media involving liquid/vapour interfaces.

Fabrication of Centimeter Long, Ultra-Low Aspect Ratio Nanochannel Networks in Borosilicate Glass Substrates

Nanofluidic devices have a broad range of applications resulting from the dominance of surface-fluid interactions. Examples include molecular gating, sample preconcentration, and sample injection. Manipulation of small fluid samples is ideal for micro total analysis systems or lab on chip devices which perform multiple unit operations on a single chip. In this paper, fabrication procedures for two different ultra-low aspect ratio (ULAR) channel network designs are presented. The ULAR provides increased throughput compared to higher aspect ratio features with the same critical dimensions. Channel network designs allow for integration between microscale and nanoscale fluidic networks. A modified calcium assisted glass–glass bonding procedure was developed to fabricate chemically uniform, all glass nanochannels. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-glass adhesive bonding procedure was also developed as adhesive bonding allows for more robust fabrication with lower sensitivity to surface defects. The fabrication schemes presented allow for a broad array of available parameters for facile selection of device fabrication techniques depending on desired applications for lab on chip devices.

Micromolding in capillaries for calcination-free fabrication of flexible inorganic phosphor films consisting of rare-earth-ion-doped nanoparticles

We discuss the micromolding in capillaries technique for the direct fabrication of calcination-free rare earth ion-doped (RE) phosphor films consisting of RE nanoparticles on plastic sheets. We synthesized two types of RE nanoparticles consisting of Y2O3 matrix doped with Er and Yb ions. Green upconversion luminescence, red upconversion luminescence, and near-infrared fluorescence appeared from the RE nanoparticles under excitation of near-infrared light. Adjusting the channel width and depth of polydimethylsiloxane molds led to control of the density of nanoparticles in the patterned RE nanoparticle films. Adjusting concentration of the RE nanoparticle dispersion and size of the RE nanoparticles allowed for the control of the density of nanoparticles in the patterned RE nanoparticle films. The density of nanoparticles in the patterned RE films on plastic sheets increased with an increase in the number of injection and drying of the RE nanoparticle dispersion. These results demonstrate that this technique enables us to directly fabricate the patterned RE phosphor films on plastic sheets, leading to the fabrication of inorganic flexible devices with small fabrication steps and material consumptions.

Review article: Fabrication of nanofluidic devices

Thanks to its unique features at the nanoscale, nanofluidics, the study and application of fluid flow in nanochannels/nanopores with at least one characteristic size smaller than 100 nm, has enabled the occurrence of many interesting transport phenomena and has shown great potential in both bio- and energy-related fields. The unprecedented growth of this research field is apparently attributed to the rapid development of micro/nanofabrication techniques. In this review, we summarize recent activities and achievements of nanofabrication for nanofluidic devices, especially those reported in the past four years. Three major nanofabrication strategies, including nanolithography, microelectromechanical system based techniques, and methods using various nanomaterials, are introduced with specific fabrication approaches. Other unconventional fabrication attempts which utilize special polymer properties, various microfabrication failure mechanisms, and macro/microscale machining techniques are also presented. Based on these fabrication techniques, an inclusive guideline for materials and processes selection in the preparation of nanofluidic devices is provided. Finally, technical challenges along with possible opportunities in the present nanofabrication for nanofluidic study are discussed.
