Fluorescent AIE-Active Materials for Two-Photon Bioimaging Applications

Fluorescence imaging has been widely used as a powerful tool for in situ and real-time visualization of important analytes and biological events in live samples with remarkably high selectivity, sensitivity, and spatial resolution. Compared with one-photon fluorescence imaging, two-photon fluorescence imaging exhibits predominant advantages of minimal photodamage to samples, deep tissue penetration, and outstanding resolution. Recently, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have become a preferred choice in two-photon fluorescence biological imaging because of its unique bright fluorescence in solid and aggregate states and strong resistance to photobleaching. In this review, we will exclusively summarize the applications of AIE-active materials in two-photon fluorescence imaging with some representative examples from four aspects: fluorescence detection, in vitro cell imaging, ex vivo tissue imaging, and in vivo vascular imaging. In addition, the current challenges and future development directions of AIE-active materials for two-photon bioimaging are briefly discussed.

Emissive Supramolecular Systems Based on Reversible Bond Formation and Noncovalent Interactions

Noncovalent interactions and reversible bond formations are widely seen in natural systems for the construction of sophisticated molecular systems that perform various biological processes. Inspired by the natural systems, luminescent supramolecular systems constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly and homometallic metal-metal interations have been studied increasingly. These supramolecular systems show fascinating luminescent behaviors that are not observed from single components. This review summarizes our progress in the development of two types of unique luminescent supramolecular systems. The mononuclear Pt(II) complex units can sandwich coinage metal ions to form heteropolynuclear complexes involving heterometallic metal-metal interactions. A close proximity of the two or three different metal ions by the noncovalent forces lead to orbital overlapping among the coinage metal ions and the Pt(II) complex units, showing emission color change accompanied with structural transformation and reversible metal binding behaviors. Emissive host-guest systems consisting of mononuclear metal complexes and a hydrogen-bonded capsule are also developed, that show a unique encapsulation-induced emission enhancement (EIEE) behavior.

Supramolecular Polymers With AIE Property Fabricated From a Cyanostilbene Motif-Derived Ditopic Benzo-21-Crown-7 and a Ditopic Dialkylammonium Salt

Fluorescent supramolecular polymers (FSP) have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Particularly, the incorporation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property to the FSP will bring this material into practical applications. Herein, we designed and synthesized a cyanostilbene motif derived ditopic benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7) as a host molecule (H). The cyanostilbene motif endows H with AIE property while the B21C7 motif renders it with the capability to complex with electron deficient guest molecules. Upon the addition of a ditopic dialkylammonium salt molecule (G), a novel FSP with blue luminescent property can be constructed. This B21C7-based host-guest FSP with blue fluorescence may have potential application in supramolecular luminescent materials.

Full Visible Spectrum and White Light Emission with a Single, Input-Tunable Organic Fluorophore

The blue emission of M2biQ can be tuned to specific wavelengths throughout the visible region by changing the identity of the cation it interacts with. These optical properties are observed in MeCN solution and the solid state. White light is obtained in MeCN by using either the proper ratio of zinc ions or acid. Thus, M2biQ acts as a nearly universal emitter (λem = 468-690 nm) with large Stokes shifts (116-306 nm, Δν̃ = 7,042-11,823 cm-1). Full spectral profiles as well as quantum yields, lifetimes, and the crystal structures of key RGB and yellow emitters are reported. Emission wavelengths correlate with cationic radius, and TD-DFT calculations show that, for 1:1 complexes, the smaller the ion, the shorter the N-cation bond, and the greater the bathochromic emission shift.

Metal-Free White Light-Emitting Fluorescent Material Based on Simple Pillar[5]arene-tripodal Amide System and Theoretical Insights on Its Assembly and Fluorescent Properties

The booming of host-guest assembly-based supramolecular chemistry provides abundant ways to construct functional systems and materials. Attracted by the important application prospect of white light emission and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials, herein, we report an efficient way for fabricating metal-free white light-emitting AIE materials through the supramolecular assembly of simple organic compounds: methoxyl pillar[5]arene (MP5) and tri-(pyridine-4-ylamido)benzene (TAP). By host-guest assembly, MP5 and TAP formed a supramolecular polymer (MP5-T); meanwhile, the MP5-T xerogel powder emitted white light at CIE coordinates (0.29 and 0.29). The supramolecular assembly and white light-emitting mechanisms were carefully investigated by experiments as well as quantum chemical calculations including density functional theory (DFT), reduced density gradient, electrostatic surface potential, independent gradient model, and frontier molecular orbital (highest-occupied molecular orbital-lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital) analyses. Interestingly, according to the experiments and calculations, the supramolecular assembly is critical in the white light-emitting phenomenon. Moreover, in this work, the quantum chemical calculations could not only support experimental phenomena but also provide deep understanding and visualized presentation of the assembly and emission mechanism. In addition, the obtained MP5-T solid powder could serve as a novel and easy means to make material for white light-emitting devices.

Amphiphilic Rhomboidal Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycles with Encapsulated Doxorubicin for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Synergistic therapy with nanocarriers is a promising strategy for effective cancer treatment. Here, we synthesized an amphiphilic rhomboidal metallacycle M, in which a glucose-modified pyridine ligand was used to improve water-solubility and an organoplatinum(II) receptor acted as a platinum-based anticancer agent. Moreover, because of the amphiphilic properties, M self-assembled into micelles or nanobelts at different concentrations, and a drug delivery system (DDS) was developed by encapsulating the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) into the micelles. The morphology, cell uptake, cytotoxicity, internalization, and antitumor effect of the DDS were investigated. Under low intracellular pH conditions, the DDS disassembled to release the loaded DOX in situ. The designed DDS exhibited good biocompatibility, synergistic antitumor efficacy, and negligible adverse effects in a U87 tumor-bearing mice model.

Fluorescent Metallacycle-Cored Amphiphilic Nanoparticles Formed by β-Cyclodextrin-Based Host-Guest Interactions towards Cancer Theranostics

Theranostic agents, taking the advantages of both imaging and therapeutic functions, are anticipated to be key components in the development of personalized medicine in which the therapeutic response can be real-time monitored. Herein, three metallacycles with pendent adamantane groups are prepared by coordination-driven self-assembly of Pt^II ligands with anticancer activities and tetraphenylethylene derivatives with emission. β-Cyclodextrin, which shows good host-guest interactions with adamantane moieties, was added to form amphiphilic supramolecular nanoparticles with the aim to enhance the aqueous solubilities and bioactivities of these metallacycles. Moreover, when rhodamine-modified β-cyclodextrin was used as the carrier, the release of the metallacycles from the nanoparticles could be monitored in situ through the fluorescence changes owing to the efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer from the metallacycles to rhodamine-modified β-cyclodextrin. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that these nanoparticles not only served as cell imaging contrast agents but also displayed improved anticancer activities, allowing them to serve as potential candidates for cancer theranostics. This study provides a simple and efficient method to prepare theranostic agents by hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly, which will pave the way for image-guided cancer therapy, targeted cancer therapy, and related biomedical fields.

Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Formed by Crown Ether-Based Host-Guest Interaction

Inspired by the vast array of assemblies present in nature, supramolecular chemistry has attracted significant attention on account of its diverse supra-structures, which include micelles, vesicles, and fibers, in addition to its extensive applications in luminescent materials, sensors, bioimaging, and drug delivery over the past decades. Supramolecular polymers, which represent a combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science, are constructed by non-covalent interactions, such as host-guest interactions, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, metal-ligand interactions, π-π stacking, and electrostatic interactions. To date, numerous host-guest recognition systems have been reported, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbituril, pillararenes, and other macrocyclic hosts. Among them, crown ethers, as the first generation of macrocyclic hosts, provide a promising and facile alternative route to supramolecular polymers. In addition, the incorporation of fluorophores into supramolecular polymers could endow them with multiple properties and functions, thereby presenting potential advantages in the context of smart materials. Thus, this review focuses on the fabrication strategies, interesting properties, and potential applications of fluorescent supramolecular polymers based on crown ethers. Typical examples are presented and discussed in terms of three different types of building blocks, namely covalently bonded low-molecular-weight compounds, polymers modified by hosts or guests, and supramolecular coordination complexes.

Designing a highly stable coordination-driven metallacycle for imaging-guided photodynamic cancer theranostics

Coordination-driven self-assembly features good predictability and directionality in the construction of discrete metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined sizes and shapes, but their medicinal application has been limited by their low stability and solubility. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a highly stable coordination-driven metallacycle with desired functionality derived from a perylene-diimide ligand via a spontaneous deprotonation self-assembly process. Brilliant chemical stability and singlet oxygen production ability of this emissive octanuclear organopalladium macrocycle make it a good candidate toward biological studies. After cellular uptake by endocytosis, the metallacycle exhibits potent fluorescence cell imaging properties and cancer photodynamic therapeutic ability through enhancing ROS production, with high biocompatibility and safety. This study not only provides a rational design strategy for highly stable luminescent organopalladium metallacycles, but also sheds light on their application in imaging-guided photodynamic cancer therapy.

A highly-luminescent metallacycle with chemical stability and singlet oxygen production ability were obtained by a spontaneous deprotonation self-assembly process, which exhibits application potential in imaging-guided photodynamic cancer therapy.

Recent developments in the construction and applications of platinum-based metallacycles and metallacages via coordination

Coordination-driven suprastructures have attracted much interest due to their unique properties. Among these structures, platinum-based architectures have been broadly studied due to their facile preparation. The resultant two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) systems have many advantages over their precursors, such as improved emission tuning, sensitivity as sensors, and capture and release of guests, and they have been applied in biomedical diagnosis as well as in catalysis. Herein, we review the recent results related to platinum-based coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA), and the text is organized to emphasizes both the synthesis of new metallacycles and metallacages and their various applications.

Emissive Metallacycle-Crosslinked Supramolecular Networks with Tunable Crosslinking Densities for Bacterial Imaging and Killing

The chemical structures and topologies of the crosslinks in supramolecular networks play a crucial role in their properties and functions. Herein, the preparation of a type of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM)-based supramolecular networks crosslinked by emissive hexagonal metallacycles is presented. The topological connections in these networks greatly affect their properties, as evidenced by their differences in absorption, emission, lower critical solution temperature, and modulus along with the variation of crosslinking densities. The integration of PNIPAAM and metallacycles in the networks benefits them improved bioavailability, making them serve as reagents for bacterial imaging and killing. This study provides a strategy to prepare cavity-crosslinked polymer networks for antibacterial applications.

Self-Assembly of Porphyrin-Containing Metalla-Assemblies and Cancer Photodynamic Therapy

In this report, we describe the synthesis of two porphyrin-containing Pt(II) supramolecular assemblies via coordination-driven self-assembly. X-ray crystallographic analysis on one assembly reveals that the metalla-assembly formation imposes large interchromophore distances, leading to a higher 1O2 generation efficiency, relative to the corresponding small molecular precursors. The metalla-assemblies were examined as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy as the potential reduction of the unfavorable self-aggregation phenomenon. In vivo and in vitro investigations demonstrate that the metalla-assemblies exhibit enhanced anticancer activity with minimal dose requirement and side effects comparable to the small molecule precursors. Thus, our work demonstrates that self-assembly provides a promising methodology for enhancing the therapeutic effectiveness of anticancer agents.

Luminescent Metallacycle-Cored Liquid Crystals Induced by Metal Coordination

Two rhomboidal metallacycles based on metal-coordination-driven self-assembly are presented. Because metal-coordination interactions restrict the rotation of phenyl groups on tetraphenylethene units, these metallacycles were emissive both in solution and in solid state, and their aggregation-induced emission properties were well-retained. Moreover, the rhomboidal metallacyclic structures offer a platform for intermolecular packing beneficial for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Therefore, although neither of building blocks shows mesogenic properties, both thermotropic and lyotropic (in DMF) mesophases were observed in one of metallacycles, indicating that mesophases could be induced by metal-coordination interactions. This study not only reveals the mechanism for the formation of cavity-cored liquid crystals, but also provides a convenient approach to preparing supramolecular luminescent liquid crystals, which will serve as good candidates for chemo sensors and liquid crystal displays.

Emissive Platinum(II) Cages with Reverse Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer for Multiple Sensing

It is quite challenging to realize fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two chromophores with specific positions and directions. Herein, through the self-assembly of two carefully selected fluorescent ligands via metal-coordination interactions, we prepared two tetragonal prismatic platinum(II) cages with a reverse FRET process between their faces and pillars. Bearing different responses to external stimuli, these two emissive ligands are able to tune the FRET process, thus making the cages sensitive to solvents, pressure, and temperature. First, these cages could distinguish structurally similar alcohols such as n-butanol, t-butanol, and i-butanol. Furthermore, they showed decreased emission with bathochromic shifts under high pressure. Finally, they exhibited a remarkable ratiometric response to temperature over a wide range (223-353 K) with high sensitivity. For example, by plotting the ratio of the maximum emission (I₆₀₀/I₄₈₀) of metallacage 4b against the temperature, the slope reaches 0.072, which is among the highest values for ratiometric fluorescent thermometers reported so far. This work not only offers a strategy to manipulate the FRET efficiency in emissive supramolecular coordination complexes but also paves the way for the future design and preparation of smart emissive materials with external stimuli responsiveness.

A Self-Cross-Linking Supramolecular Polymer Network Enabled by Crown-Ether-Based Molecular Recognition

Supramolecular polymers based on host-guest molecular recognition have emerged as promising platforms for the development of smart materials. However, the studies on them are primarily conducted in solution and/or in the gel state. In contrast, little is known about dynamic properties and applications of supramolecular polymers in bulk. Herein, we present a self-cross-linking supramolecular polymer network (SPN) as a model system to understand the bulk properties controlled by noncovalent interactions. Specifically, the SPN monomer is composed of two benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7) host units and two dialkylammonium salt guest moieties on a four-arm core, wherein complementary host-guest complexation drives the formation of the SPN with [2]pseudorotaxane linkages between B21C7 and ammonium motifs. The dynamic and reversible behaviors of the linkages are evaluated by measurement of viscoelasticity. The results indicate that the host-guest molecular recognition becomes highly dynamic at elevated temperature. Moreover, the relatively high activation energy of the SPN manifests itself as a new type of thermoplastic material with network topology freezing glass transition. Finally, we demonstrate how these findings provide insights into the malleability and processability of the SPN by simple demos. The fundamental understanding gained from the research on this SPN in bulk will facilitate the advancement and application of supramolecular materials.

Color-tunable single-fluorophore supramolecular system with assembly-encoded emission

Regulating the fluorescent properties of organic small molecules in a controlled and dynamic manner has been a fundamental research goal. Although several strategies have been exploited, realizing multi-color molecular emission from a single fluorophore remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an emissive system by combining pyrene fluorophore and acylhydrazone units, which can generate multi-color switchable fluorescent emissions at different assembled states. Two kinds of supramolecular tools, amphiphilic self-assembly and γ-cyclodextrin mediated host-guest recognition, are used to manipulate the intermolecular aromatic stacking distances, resulting in the tunable fluorescent emission ranging from blue to yellow, including a pure white-light emission. Moreover, an external chemical signal, amylase, is introduced to control the assembly states of the system on a time scale, generating a distinct dynamic emission system. The dynamic properties of this multi-color fluorescent system can be also enabled in a hydrogel network, exhibiting a promising potential for intelligent fluorescent materials.

Regulating fluorescent properties of small molecules in a controlled manner has been a fundamental research goal but realizing multi-color emission from a single fluorophore remains challenging. Here the authros demonstrate that combined pyrene fluorophore and acylhydrazone units show multi-color switchable fluorescent at different assembled states.

Host-Guest Recognition and Fluorescence of a Tetraphenylethene-Based Octacationic Cage

We report the synthesis and characterization of a three-dimensional tetraphenylethene-based octacationic cage that shows host-guest recognition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. coronene) in organic media and water-soluble dyes (e.g. sulforhodamine 101) in aqueous media through CH⋅⋅⋅π, π-π, and/or electrostatic interactions. The cage⊃coronene exhibits a cuboid internal cavity with a size of approximately 17.2×11.0×6.96 ų and a "hamburger"-type host-guest complex, which is hierarchically stacked into 1D nanotubes and a 3D supramolecular framework. The free cage possesses a similar cavity in the crystalline state. Furthermore, a host-guest complex formed between the octacationic cage and sulforhodamine 101 had a higher absolute quantum yield (Φ_F =28.5 %), larger excitation-emission gap (Δλ_ex-em =211 nm), and longer emission lifetime (τ=7.0 ns) as compared to the guest (Φ_F =10.5 %; Δλ_ex-em =11 nm; τ=4.9 ns), and purer emission (Δλ_FWHM =38 nm) as compared to the host (Δλ_FWHM =111 nm).

Turn-on fluorescence in a pyridine-decorated tetraphenylethylene: the cooperative effect of coordination-driven rigidification and silver ion induced aggregation

Self-assembled sialyllactosyl probes with aggregation-enhanced properties for ratiometric detection and blocking of influenza viruses

Infection and dissemination of influenza viruses (IVs) causes serious health concerns worldwide. However, effective tools for the accurate detection and blocking of IVs remain elusive. Here, we develop a new sialyllactosyl probe with self-assembled core-shell structure for the ratiometric detection and blocking of IVs. N,N'-diaryl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines were used to form the core structure by hydrophobic assembly in an aqueous solution with an aggregation-enhanced blue fluorescence mission. Subsequently, dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran-based sialyllactosides were used for self-assembly with the core structure, producing the sialyllactosyl probe that emits a red fluorescence due to Förster resonance energy transfer. The probe developed has been proven to be available for (1) the fluorescence ratiometric detection of IVs through selective interaction with the sialyllactosyl-binding proteins on the virus surface, and (2) effectively blocking the invasion of human-infecting IVs towards host cells as accentuated by the sialyllactosides on the surface of the probes.

A Supramolecular Artificial Light-Harvesting System with Two-Step Sequential Energy Transfer for Photochemical Catalysis

An artificial light-harvesting system with sequential energy-transfer process was fabricated based on a supramolecular strategy. Self-assembled from the host-guest complex formed by water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5), a bola-type tetraphenylethylene-functionalized dialkyl ammonium derivative (TPEDA), and two fluorescent dyes, Eosin Y (ESY) and Nile Red (NiR), the supramolecular vesicles achieve efficient energy transfer from the AIE guest TPEDA to ESY. ESY can function as a relay to further transfer the energy to the second acceptor NiR and realize a two-step sequential energy-transfer process with good efficiency. By tuning the donor/acceptor ratio, bright white light emission can be successfully achieved with a CIE coordinate of (0.33, 0.33). To better mimic natural photosynthesis and make full use of the harvested energy, the WP5⊃TPEDA-ESY-NiR system can be utilized as a nanoreactor: photocatalyzed dehalogenation of α-bromoacetophenone was realized with 96 % yield in aqueous medium.

Self-Healing Heterometallic Supramolecular Polymers Constructed by Hierarchical Assembly of Triply Orthogonal Interactions with Tunable Photophysical Properties

Here, we present a method for the building of new bicyclic heterometallic cross-linked supramolecular polymers by hierarchical unification of three types of orthogonal noncovalent interactions, including platinum(II)-pyridine coordination-driven self-assembly, zinc-terpyridine complex, and host-guest interactions. The platinum-pyridine coordination provides the primary driving force to form discrete rhomboidal metallacycles. The assembly does not interfere with the zinc-terpyridine complexes, which link the discrete metallacycles into linear supramolecular polymers, and the conjugation length is extended upon the formation of the zinc-terpyridine complexes, which red-shifts the absorption and emission spectra. Finally, host-guest interactions via bis-ammonium salt binding to the benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7) groups on the platinum acceptors afford the cross-linked supramolecular polymers. By continuous increase of the concentration of the supramolecular polymer to a relatively high level, supramolecular polymer gel is obtained, which exhibits self-healing properties and reversible gel-sol transitions stimulated by various external stimuli, including temperature, K⁺, and cyclen. Moreover, the photophysical properties of the supramolecular polymers could be effectively tuned by varying the substituents of the precursor ligands.

Metal-Organic Pt(II) Hexagonal-Prism Macrocycles and Their Photophysical Properties

In this work, we present the formation of two open-ended hexagonal-prism tubular macrocycles by the [6 + 12] self-assembly of the symmetric ∼120° organic ligand donor with ∼90° Pt(II) acceptor in a 1:2 ratio. The assembled structures were characterized by multinuclear NMR (1H NMR, 31P{1H} NMR, and 1H-1H COSY NMR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS), traveling wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), and transmission electron microscopy. Molecular modeling was further conducted to get insight into their structured characteristics. We also examined their photophysical properties.

Switchable organoplatinum metallacycles with high quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths

The preparation of fluorescent discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) has attracted considerable attention within the fields of supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and biological sciences. However, many challenges remain. For instance, fluorescence quenching often occurs due to the heavy-atom effect arising from the Pt(II)-based building block in Pt-based SCCs. Moreover, relatively few methods exist for tuning of the emission wavelength of discrete SCCs. Thus, it is still challenging to construct discrete SCCs with high fluorescence quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths. Here we report nine organoplatinum fluorescent metallacycles that exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths through simple regulation of their photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties. Moreover, 3D fluorescent films and fluorescent inks for inkjet printing were fabricated using these metallacycles. This work provides a strategy to solve the fluorescence quenching problem arising from the heavy-atom effect of Pt(II), and offers an alternative approach to tune the emission wavelengths of discrete SCCs in the same solvent.

A nano-cocktail of an NIR-II emissive fluorophore and organoplatinum(ii) metallacycle for efficient cancer imaging and therapy

The scarcity of efficient imaging technologies for precise cancer treatment greatly drives the development of new nanotheranostic based platforms that enable both diagnostic and therapeutic functions, together in a single formulation. Owing to the complicated physiological microenvironment, nanosystems designed with the possibility of noninvasive real-time monitoring of therapeutic progression in the second near-infrared channel (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) could substantially improve the current cancer therapies. Herein, we design a novel NIR-II theranostic nanoprobe, PSY (size ∼110 nm), by incorporating organoplatinum(ii) metallacycles P1 and an organic NIR-II molecular dye, SY1030, into the FDA-approved polymer Pluronic F127. Preliminary in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that PSY is capable of being internalized into glioma U87MG-cells with no significant internalization in non-cancerous tissues. In addition, it shows excellent photostability and minimal background for real-time monitoring the process of therapy in the NIR-II region. Furthermore, in U87MG xenografts and orthotopic breast tumor, PSY demonstrat significantly improved anticancer efficacy compared to a clinically approved Pt(ii)-based anticancer drug, cisplatin. The engineered nano-cocktail PSY offers a simple strategy for delivering the organoplatinum(ii) macrocycle P1 and NIR-II fluorophore SY1030 as a cocktail of diagnostic and therapeutic functions and highlights its promising capacity for future cancer treatment.

Rotaxane-Based Mechanophores Enable Polymers with Mechanically Switchable White Photoluminescence

Three mechanoresponsive polyurethane elastomers whose blue, green, and orange photoluminescence can be reversibly turned on by mechanical force were prepared and combined to create a blend that exhibits deformation-induced white photoluminescence. The three polyurethanes contain rotaxane-based supramolecular mechanoluminophores based on π-extended pyrene, anthracene, or 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) luminophores, respectively, and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide as an electronically matched quencher. Each polymer shows instantly reversible, strain-dependent switching of its photoluminescence intensity when stretched and relaxed, as deformation leads to a spatial separation of the luminophore and quencher. The present study shows that the photoluminescence color can easily be tailored by variation of the luminophore and also by combining several mechanophores in one material and demonstrates that adaptability is a key advantage of supramolecular approaches to create mechanoresponsive polymers.

Multicomponent Porphyrin-Based Tetragonal Prismatic Metallacages and their Photophysical Properties

Multicomponent coordination-driven self-assembly has proved to be a convenient approach to prepare advanced supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), especially for those with three-dimensional structures. Herein, we report the preparation of three tetragonal prismatic cages via the self-assembly of Pt(PEt₃)₂(OTf)₂, three different linear dipyridyl ligands and porphyrin-based sodium benzoate ligands. Due to the efficient charge separation in the coordination process of Pt(PEt₃)₂(OTf)₂ with pyridine and carboxylic acid and the directionality of metal-coordination bonds, these cages were prepared in high isolated yields (more than 90%). The absorption and emission properties as well as the singlet oxygen quantum yields of these cages were also studied, showing their potential applications as contrast agents for bio-imaging and photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

Recent developments in the construction of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers via hierarchical self-assembly

Supramolecular polymers have received considerable attention during the last few decades due to their scientific value in polymer chemistry and profound implications for future developments of advanced materials. Discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with well-defined size, shape, and geometry have been widely employed to construct hierarchical systems by coordination-driven self-assembly with the spontaneous formation of metal-ligand bonds, which results in the formation of well-defined two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles or three-dimensional (3D) metallacages with high functionalities. The incorporation of discrete SCCs into supramolecular polymers by the orthogonal combination of metal-ligand coordination and other noncovalent interactions or covalent bonding could further facilitate the construction of novel supramolecular polymers with hierarchical architectures and multiple functions including controllable uptake and release of guest molecules, providing a flexible platform for the development of smart materials. In this review, the recent progress in metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers that were constructed by the combination of metal-ligand interactions and other orthogonal interactions (including hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking, electrostatic interactions, host-guest interactions and covalent bonding) has been discussed. In addition, the potential applications of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers in the areas of light emitting, sensing, bio-imaging, delivery and release, etc., are also presented.

Metallacycle-Cored Supramolecular Polymers: Fluorescence Tuning by Variation of Substituents

Herein, we present a method for the preparation of supramolecular polymers with tunable fluorescence via the combination of metal-ligand coordination and phenanthrene-21-crown-7 (P21C7)-based host-guest interactions. A suite of rhomboidal metallacycles with different substituents were prepared via the coordination-driven self-assembly of a P21C7-based 60° diplatinum(II) acceptor and 120° dipyridyl donors. Upon variation of the substituents on the dipyridyl donors, the metallacycles exhibit emission wavelengths spanning the visible region (λmax = 427-593 nm). Metallacycle-cored supramolecular polymers were obtained via host-guest interactions between bis-ammonium salts and P21C7. The supramolecular polymers exhibit emission wavelengths similar to those of the individual metallacycles and higher fluorescent efficiency in solution and thin films. Utilizing a yellow-emitting supramolecular polymer thin film with high quantum yield (0.22), a white-light-emitting LED was fabricated by painting the thin film onto an ultraviolet LED. This study presents an efficient approach for tuning the properties of fluorescent supramolecular polymers and the potential of the metallacycle-cored supramolecular polymers as a platform for the fabrication of light-emitting materials with good processability and tunability.
