Bio-inspired wettability patterns for biomedical applications

Benefiting from the remarkable wettability heterogeneity, bio-inspired wettability patterns present a progressive and versatile platform for manipulating and patterning liquids, which provides an emerging strategy for operating liquid samples with crucial values in biomedical applications. In this review, we present a general summary of bio-inspired wettability patterns. After a compendious introduction of natural wettability phenomena and their underlying mechanisms, we summarize the general design principles and fabrication methods for preparing artificial wettability materials. Next, we shift to patterned surface wettability with an emphasis on the fabrication approaches. Then, we discuss in detail the various practical applications of wettability patterns in the biomedical field, including cell culture, drug screening and biosensors. Critical thinking about the current challenges and future outlook is also provided. We believe that this review would propel the prosperous development of bio-inspired wettability patterns to flourish in the field of biomedical engineering.

Sandwiched nets for efficient direction-independent fog collection

As an effective strategy to alleviate the global water shortage, the Janus membrane has been widely developed to harvest the fog droplets because of its advantages of timely drainage and directional droplet delivery. However, Janus membrane is extremely susceptible to the direction of the fog stream, which changes dynamically in nature. In this work, we develop a three-layer sandwiched fog collector consisting of a hydrophilic inner mesh and two superhydrophobic outer meshes, which always serves as a Janus collector to enable a stable and efficient fog collection independent of the direction of the mist stream. We also demonstrate the superiority of such sandwiched fog collector in terms of the droplet shedding size and onset time, as well as the directional droplet delivery. The droplet coalescence effectively facilitates the shedding of the attached droplets on the outer superhydrophobic mesh, and the directional delivery of the clogged droplets from the superhydrophobic to hydrophilic layer further dries the mesh surface for the successive interception of fog droplets. These mechanisms can work together seamlessly, which benefits the productive collection of the droplet of different sizes on the three-layer sandwiched fog collector.

Biomimicking properties of cellulose nanofiber under ethanol/water mixture

The two types of cellulose nanofiber (CNF) surface characteristics were evaluated by oil contact angle under ethanol-water solution at several concentrations as well as in air. Wood pulp-based 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxylradical (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) sheets and bamboo-derived mechanical counter collision cellulose nanofiber (ACC-CNF) sheets were fabricated by casting followed by drying. The CNF shows underwater superoleophobic mimicking fish skin properties and slippery surface mimicking Nepenthes pitcher. The underwater superoleophobic properties of CNF was evaluated theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical calculation and experimental results of contact angle showed a large deviation. The roughness, zeta potential, and water absorption at different concentrations were key factors that determine the deviation. Antifouling investigation revealed that CNF was a good candidate for antifouling material.

Attraction and Repulsion between Liquid Droplets over a Liquid-Impregnated Surface

We show that adjacent liquid droplets exhibit long-range attraction and repulsion on an immiscible liquid impregnating a surface when either the drop or the impregnating liquid is volatile. Remarkably, we find that at small times the interaction is attractive, analogous to the "Cheerios effect", but at large times the interaction becomes repulsive depicting the "reverse-Cheerios effect". Our study reveals that the interaction is underpinned by wetting and capillarity, buoyancy, and evaporation phenomena. We experimentally observe the interaction between a pair of droplets and provide a theoretical framework to quantitatively predict their transport behavior.

Bioinspired Free-Standing One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals with Janus Wettability for Water Quality Monitoring

Materials with specific wettability properties have aroused enormous interest and research for their broad application prospects in chemical reaction, medical diagnosis, biological analysis, etc. Here, inspired by the unique Janus wettability of lotus leaf and Bragg stacks of beetles, we present a free-standing film with Janus wettability and tunable structural color for water quality monitoring. This film is constructed by using a flexible polymer polyurethane (PU) to pack poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-bis-acrylamide-acrylic acid) (P(NiPAAm-bis-AA))/TiO₂ one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) into a free-standing state with Janus wettability and tunable structural color. The outer top surface of the film could achieve vivid structural color and a superhydrophobic ability; meanwhile, the outer lower surface could achieve a superhydrophilic ability. Owing to the outstanding pH-sensitive property of the P(NiPAAm-bis-AA), the Janus films could switch its structural color under different pH conditions. This imparts the free-standing film with stability and an antirotation property on the air-water interface. Based on this phenomenon, we have demonstrated a Janus wettability film, together with tunable structural color for water quality monitoring, which gives the bioinspired materials high potential applications in environmental protection.

Directional liquid dynamics of interfaces with superwettability

Natural creatures use their surface structures to control directional liquid dynamics for survival. Learning from nature, artificial superwetting materials have triggered technological revolutions in many disciplines. To improve controllability, researchers have attempted to use external fields, such as thermal, light, magnetic, and electric fields, to assist or achieve controllable liquid dynamics. Emerging directional liquid transport applications have prosperously advanced in recent years but still present some challenges. This review discusses and summarizes the field of directional liquid dynamics on natural creatures and artificial surfaces with superwettabilities and ventures to propose several potential strategies to construct directional liquid transport systems for fog collection, 3D printing, energy devices, separation, soft machine, and sensor devices, which are useful for driving liquid transport or motility.

Field-Induced Wettability Gradients for No-Loss Transport of Oil Droplets on Slippery Surfaces

Transporting oil droplets is crucial for a wide range of industrial and biomedical applications but remains highly challenging due to the large contact angle hysteresis on most solid surfaces. A liquid-infused slippery surface has a low hysteresis contact angle and is a highly promising platform if sufficient wettability gradient can be created. Current strategies used to create wettability gradient typically rely on the engineering of the chemical composition or geometrical structure. However, these strategies are inefficient on a slippery surface because the infused liquid tends to conceal the gradient in the chemical composition and small-scale geometrical structure. Magnifying the structure, on the other hand, will significantly distort the surface topography, which is unwanted in practice. In this study, we address this challenge by introducing a field-induced wettability gradient on a flat slippery surface. By printing radial electrodes array, we can pattern the electric field, which induces gradient contact angles. Theoretical analysis and experimental results reveal that the droplet transport behavior can be captured by a nondimensional electric Bond number. Our surface enables no-loss transport of various types of droplets, which we expect to find important applications such as heat transfer, anticontamination, microfluidics, and biochemical analysis.

Microfluidic Printing of Slippery Textiles for Medical Drainage around Wounds

Surface materials with specific wettability play significant roles in existing fields from environmental protection to biomedicine. Here, a 3D droplet transport microfiber textile with slippery liquid-infused porous surface is presented for medical drainage around wounds. The textile is fabricated by using a simple capillary microfluidic printing method to continuously spin polyurethane microfibers with liquid paraffin-infused porous surface and print them into a 3D-structure. Benefiting from the specific surface porous structure and oil encapsulation of the microfibers, aqueous droplets could be nondestructively and rapidly transported not only in simple single, double or multiple microfiber systems, but also in the microfibers composed stereoscopic textile through the microfluidic 3D printing. Based on this feature, it is demonstrated that the 3D slippery microfiber textile coupled with a vacuum sealing drainage therapy could significantly enhance the wound exudation drainage efficiency, reduce tissue injury, and prolong the effective service life in versatile wounds management. Thus, it is believed that the slippery microfiber textiles have potential for clinical applications.

Effect of slip on the contact-line instability of a thin liquid film flowing down a cylinder

Liquid coating films on solid surfaces exist widely in a plethora of industrial processes. In this study, we focus on the falling of a liquid film on the side surface of a vertical cylinder, where the surface is viewed as slippery, such as a liquid-infused surface. The evolution profiles and flow instability of the advancing contact line are comprehensively analyzed. The governing equation of the thin film flow is derived according to the lubrication model, and the traveling-wave solutions are numerically obtained. The results show that the wave speed increases with the increase of a larger slippery length. A linear stability analysis (LSA) is carried out to verify the traveling solutions and time responses. Although previous studies tell us that the wall slippage always promotes the surface flow instability of the thin film flow, the linear stability analysis, numerical simulations, and nonlinear traveling-wave solutions in the current study present a different conclusion. The analysis show that for a thin film flow with a dynamic contact line the wall slippage in different directions plays much more complex roles. The streamwise slippery effect always impedes the instability of the flow and suppresses the wave height of traveling wave, while the transverse slippery effect has a dual effect on the surface instability. The transverse slippery effect significantly improves the instability while the wave number of the perturbation is small, and simultaneously it reduces the cutoff wave number. The transverse slippery effect will change its role if the wave number of the perturbation exceeds a critical value, which can stabilize the contact line.

Robust Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Network Surfaces for Enhanced Anti-icing/Deicing Performance

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have recently been intensively investigated because of promising potential in various applications that require water repellency. However, the use of SLIPS is limited by its unsatisfactory oil-storage and -replacement capabilities. Here we designed network surface structures with interconnected microchannels and cross-linked nanosheets, which acted as natural oil reservoirs and vessels. A lubricant can be firmly locked and stored into the networks, leading to an efficient water repellency as well as improved mechanical durability and stability. We further show the surface structures can be applied to anti-icing/deicing, demonstrated by its improved icing-delaying, anti-icing, and deicing properties even after multiple cycles, compared to those on superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) and the conventional SLIPSs. We envision that this unique design of the slippery liquid-infused porous network surface (SLIPNS) with robust stability and durability may expand its application in extreme environments.

Black Phosphorus-Loaded Separable Microneedles as Responsive Oxygen Delivery Carriers for Wound Healing

Oxygen carriers are attracting extensive interest in biomedical research and clinical applications such as wound healing, alternative blood transfusion, and acute trauma treatment. Great efforts have been devoted to the generation of oxygen carriers with special functions and properties to meet specific demands. Here, we present black phosphorus (BP)-loaded separable responsive microneedles (MNs) with oxygen carrying and controllable oxygen delivering ability for wound healing. Such MNs are composed of a polyvinyl acetate (PVA) backing layer and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) tips that are loaded with BP quantum dots (BP QDs) and hemoglobin (Hb). Taking advantage of the fast dissolvability of PVA, the backing layer soon disappears after the MNs are applied to skin and the noncytotoxic, biocompatible GelMA tips are left inside the skin. Due to the excellent photothermal effect of BP QDs and the reversible oxygen binding property of Hb, the local temperature of the skin will increase after near-infrared ray irradiation, resulting in the responsive oxygen release. Notably, the practical performance of such MNs has been demonstrated by treating the full-thickness cutaneous wounds of a type I diabetes rat model, indicating their potential value in wound healing and other related biomedical fields.

Surface morphology enhances deposition efficiency in biomimetic, wind-driven fog collection

Passive interception of fog from the wind is an effective solution for accessing water in regions where fog is frequent and other sources scarce. A Namib Desert beetle is often cited as bioinspiration for further advancement, in a narrative which focuses on patterned wettability of its bumpy elytra as a means of transporting accumulated water from its back to its mouth. However, surface transport in fog collection is secondary to the role of the fluid dynamics of droplet deposition, in which inertial droplets migrate across diverging streamlines approaching an obstruction. 3D geometry of biological surface features inevitably affect this process, but its specific role in flow physics of fog collection has not previously been explored. Here, we report experimental measurements of deposition efficiency of targets with identical surface chemistry but varying surface morphology. We find a nearly threefold increase in collection upon addition of millimetric bumps to a spherical target, and provide insight into the micromechanics underlying the performance. Modifying surface morphology can be easier than overall geometry for both manufactured structures and evolved organisms and should therefore be both considered in the design of separation devices and expected in other biological systems for which extraction of particles from flow is important.

Life and death of liquid-infused surfaces: a review on the choice, analysis and fate of the infused liquid layer

We review the rational choice, the analysis, the depletion and the properties imparted by the liquid layer in liquid-infused surfaces – a new class of low-adhesion surface.

Living Bacterial Microneedles for Fungal Infection Treatment

Fungal infections are everlasting health challenges all over the world, bringing about great financial and medical burdens. Here, inspired by the natural competition law of beneficial bacteria against other microbes, we present novel living microneedles (LMNs) with functionalized bacteria encapsulation for efficient fungal infection treatment. The chosen beneficial bacterial components, Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), which are naturally found on the human skin and widely used for food processing, can get nutrients from the skin and escape from the immune system with the help of microneedles. Besides, the encapsulated B. subtilis can continuously produce and secrete various potential antifungal agents which can directly bind to fungal cell surface-associated proteins and destruct the cell membranes, thus avoiding drug resistance. After immobilization in the LMNs, the bacteria can stay within the LMNs without invasion and the encapsulated bacteria together with microneedles can be removed after application. Thus, the side effects, especially the risk for subsequent bacterial infections, are controlled to a minimum to ensure security. In addition, strong penetrability of the microneedles enhances penetration of antifungal agents, and their heights can be adjusted according to the infected depth to acquire better therapeutic effects. These features make the LMNs potentially valuable for clinical applications.
