Abstract
The standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIAAD) of 5 plant-based ingredients was determined in 5- and 21-d-old broiler chicks and turkey poults. Two diets (N-free diet, NFD, and a highly digestible protein diet 10% casein, HDP) were fed to determine ileal endogenous amino acid flow, and each was used for endogenous amino acid correction for the plant-based ingredients. The plant-based ingredients evaluated were 2 samples of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (light and dark DDGS), canola meal, corn, and soybean meal. Each diet was fed for 5 d to 6 replicate cages containing 30 or 8 birds, which were sampled on d 5 or 21, respectively. For chicks, apparent ileal amino acid digestibility increased with age for all the feed ingredients. After standardization, SIAAD increased with age when chicks were fed DDGS and corn, but not soybean meal or canola meal. For all the feed ingredients evaluated, SIAAD values for both methods of standardization were not different at d 5. However, the HDP method resulted in greater SIAAD values for most of the amino acids in light DDGS, canola meal, and corn (d 21). In poults, the apparent ileal amino acid digestibility values increased with age for all the feed ingredients except the dark DDGS and canola meal. After standardization, there was no effect of age on amino acid digestibility in all the feed ingredients evaluated, with the exception of corn. Within a particular age (d 5 or 21), both methods of standardization resulted in similar amino acid digestibility values except for corn, for which the SIAAD values were greater (NFD method) in 11 amino acids. Results from this study showed that age-appropriate endogenous amino acid standardization is necessary and, in some cases, results in no age-associated differences in amino acid digestibility. With the exception of corn, standardization of amino acid digestibility with ileal endogenous amino acid flow from birds fed an NFD or HDP did not differ for most plant feedstuffs.

Abstract
The coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID) of DM, gross energy (GE), N, and amino acids (AA) of 6 soybean meal (SBM) samples were compared in 21-d-old broilers. In addition, the digestibility of DM and N of diets that contained these SBM were tested in vitro. Four of the SBM were of South American origin, had a CP content varying from 45.2 to 47.2% and a trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) varying from 4.1 to 6.5 mg/g, and were collected from local traders. The other 2 SBM were from US origin; one was a branded product with 48.6% CP and 1.8 mg of TIA/g and the other was obtained from soybeans of US origin that were dehulled and processed in Spain (50.6% CP and 2.4 mg of TIA/g). The experimental design was completely randomized with 6 diets and 6 replicates per treatment. Chicks were fed a commercial diet from 1 to 16 d of age and then their respective experimental diets for 5 d. The diets were based on sucrose and corn starch, with the SBM tested as the only source of protein. At 21 d of age, digesta was collected from the distal ileum and the CAID of nutrients was determined using celite as an indigestible marker. Diets that included the 2 SBM with the greatest CP content had greater CAID of DM (P

Abstract
1. Experiments were conducted to assess the influence of caecectomy on amino acid availability (AAA) of three feedstuffs for goose. 2. Nine caecectomised and 9 intact Yangzhou ganders, 24 weeks old, were used in these experiments. Fish meal, soybean meal and cottonseed meal were used as the sole source of protein. The endogenous amino acid (AA) losses were evaluated by a nitrogen (N)-free diet method. The influence of caecectomy on apparent amino acid availability (AAAA) in fish meal, soybean meal and cottonseed meal was assessed in experiment 1 and true amino acid availability (TAAA) of three protein diets was determined in experiment 2. 3. Results showed that, in the soybean meal and cottonseed meal, the AAAA and TAAA of most AA determined by the intact ganders were higher than in the caecectomised ganders; in the fish meal, the AAAA and TAAA of most AA determined by the intact ganders were lower than in the caecectomised ganders. 4. Results of the present study suggest that the effect of caecectomy on AAA in geese was dependent on the feedstuff assayed, and it was better to use caecectomised poultry for AAA assessment.

Standardized ileal amino acid digestibility of meat and bone meal from different sources in broiler chicks and turkey poults with a nitrogen-free or casein diet. Poult Sci 2008; 86:2598-607. Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the standardization method and age on standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIAAD) of 4 meat and bone meal (MBM) samples in broiler chicks and turkey poults. The SIAAD were obtained by correcting apparent ileal digestibility (AID) values for basal ileal endogenous amino acid flow obtained from chicks and poults fed a N-free diet or a highly digestible protein diet (HDP; 100 g of casein/kg of diet). Four diets were formulated to contain 20% CP by using MBM as the only source of CP. Each diet was fed to 6 replicate cages of 30 or 8 birds/cage at 5 and 21 d, respectively, for 5 d. With the exception of all-beef MBM, chick AID values on d 21 were higher (P < 0.05) than on d 5. In poults, however, AID was not different between the 2 ages, with the exception of His, which was higher (P < 0.05) at d 21. There was no difference between methods on SIAAD on d 5 or 21 for all 4 MBM samples in either species. There was no effect of the method of standardization on SIAAD at either age for most amino acids. For chicks, however, standardization of the all-beef MBM sample with HDP resulted in higher (P < 0.05) SIAAD values for most of the amino acids (d 5). In poults at d 5, however, the SIAAD for most of the amino acids in the blended MBM were higher (P < 0.05) with HDP correction. The CV in SIAAD in chicks between the 2 methods of standardization was higher on d 5 (8.1%) relative to d 21 (5.0%) for all treatments. In poults, greater variability was observed on d 21 (8.2%) relative to d 5 (6.7%). Results from this study showed that at d 21, SI-AAD with either the N-free or the HDP diet resulted in similar digestibility values.

Abstract
This summary focuses on reducing nitrogen (N) and ammonia emissions from poultry manure through the use of improved amino acid digestibilities and enzyme supplementation. Proper feed processing techniques, phase feeding, and the minimization of feed and water waste can contribute to additional minor reductions in these emissions. Reductions in environmental pollution can be achieved through improved diet formulation based on available nutrients in the ingredients, reducing crude protein (CP) levels and adding synthetic amino acids. Use of amino acid and CP digestibilities can reduce N excretion up to 40% and a 25% increase in N digestibility can be achieved with enzyme supplementation in broiler diets. Digestibilities can be measured by two methods: the excreta and ileal amino acid digestibilities. Both methods allow amino acid levels to be reduced by 10% or more. Enzyme supplementation decreases intestinal viscosity, improves metabolizable energy levels, and increases amino acid digestibilities. Many feed manufacturers still use total amino acid content to formulate feeds. To meet amino acid requirements, crystalline amino acids are needed. The use of feather, meat and bone meal must not be overestimated or underestimated and the limiting amino acids such as cystine, tryptophan, and threonine must be carefully analyzed.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to compare standardized ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility in 7- and 21-d-old chicks and true AA digestibility as determined by the precision-fed cecectomized rooster assay for several ingredients used in poultry feeds. Diets were formulated to contain soybean meal, cottonseed meal, poultry by-product meal, and fish meal in experiment 1 and corn, wheat, soybean meal, poultry by-product meal, feather meal, and fish meal in experiment 2 as the sole sources of protein. Celite, used as an indigestible marker, was added at 1.5% of the diet. The test diets were fed ad libitum to broiler chicks from 0 to 7 d of age in experiment 1 and from 4 to 7 and 17 to 21 d of age in experiment 2. Ileal digesta samples were collected after euthanizing the birds at 7 d of age in experiment 1 and at 7 and 21 d of age in experiment 2. Additionally, cecectomized, Single-Comb White Leghorn roosters were used for crop intubation of the test diets for determination of true AA digestibility. In experiment 1, AA digestibility of all ingredients tested was significantly lower at 7 d of age than when determined by the rooster assay. In experiment 2, no differences were detected between AA digestibility at 7 or 21 d of age in the chick assay for the majority of the indispensable AA. However, the AA digestibility coefficients obtained by the chick assay at 7 d and, in some cases, at 21 d of age, were significantly lower than those obtained by the rooster assay. In conclusion, there were differences in the AA digestibility coefficients obtained through the chick and the rooster assays. Such discrepancies could be associated with an age effect or the methodological differences between both methods.

Abstract
A total of 180 broiler chickens were fed 1 of 3 diets from day-old to slaughter at 35 d: a control diet with 35% soybean meal (SOY) or diets in which either 6% basic bacterial protein meal (BBP) or 6% autolysed bacterial protein meal (AUT) partially replaced soybean meal protein. Ileal and total tract apparent amino acid digestibility were examined in 5 chickens per diet using TiO(2) as an inert marker. Chickens fed the diets with bacterial protein had higher weight gain and feed consumption than control chicks during the first 3 wk, but there were no differences in growth or feed intake during the last 2 wk or during the total experimental period. The birds fed the BBP diet showed more efficient feed conversion compared with chickens fed the SOY and AUT diets. Litter quality at 5 wk was poorer in pens where the chickens were fed the AUT diet compared with the other 2 treatments. There were no differences among diets in the dressing percentage. Ileal amino acid digestibility at 5 wk of age revealed only minor differences between diets. There was a tendency toward lower ileal digestibility (0.12 > P > 0.07) of Arg, Lys, Met, and Phe in the AUT diet compared with the SOY diet, whereas there were no differences between the SOY and BBP diets. Total tract amino acid digestibilities at 5 wk were similar or slightly lower than the ileal digestibilities within diets. Total tract amino acid digestibility at 2 wk was similar to the total tract amino acid digestibility at 5 wk. The diets containing bacterial protein showed lower total tract digestibility of most amino acids compared with the SOY diet. It was concluded that 6% of either basic or autolysed bacterial protein can replace soybean meal in diets for broiler chickens without impairing growth performance, and the basic bacterial protein seemed to be a slightly better substitute than the autolysed bacterial protein.

Abstract
The apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids in 7 feed ingredients was determined using broilers, layers, and roosters. The ingredients included 3 cereals (wheat, sorghum, and corn), 3 oilseed meals (canola, cottonseed, and soybean meals), and 1 animal protein meal (meat and bone meal). Dietary protein in the assay diets was supplied solely by the test ingredient. All diets contained 20 g/kg of acid-insoluble ash as an indigestible marker, and each diet was offered ad libitum in mash form to 5 replicate pens of broilers and layers, and 4 replicate pens of roosters. The digestibility coefficients of individual amino acids for wheat, corn, and sorghum were higher (P < 0.05) in broilers than in layers and roosters. The digestibility of most amino acids for corn and sorghum was higher (P < 0.05) in roosters compared with those in layers, whereas the digestibility for wheat in layers and roosters was similar. In general, the digestibility of amino acids in canola meal, cottonseed meal, and meat and bone meal was similar among the 3 classes of chickens. The digestibility of amino acids in soybean meal was higher (P < 0.05) for layers compared with those for broilers and roosters but similar between broilers and roosters. These results suggest that the class of chickens significantly influenced the apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids in some feed ingredients.
