Abstract
The synthesis of polymers using elemental sulphur as a chemical agent has been studied in relation to the worldwide overproduction of cyclo-octasulphur. Herein, the mechanisms of the processes leading to the inclusion of elemental sulphur into macromolecules have been reviewed and the main methods for reduction of the reaction temperature required for the S8 ring opening have been shown. Approaches to the activation of cyclo-octasulphur in the synthesis and macromolecule cross-linking reactions were discussed in the context of finding the chemical agents and conditions that satisfy the principles of green chemistry.

Abstract
Polythiourethanes (PTUs) crosslinked with dynamic disulfide bonds are synthesized via a nonisocyanate approach. First, a difunctional five-membered cyclic trithiocarbonate (1) is synthesized via the reaction of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with carbon disulfide (CS2 ). Thereafter, the step-growth polymerizations of 1 with α,ω-diamino poly(propylene oxide)s with various molar masses are carried out to obtain a series of linear poly(mercapto thiourethane)s. These linear poly(mercapto thiourethane)s are readily crosslinked upon formation of disulfide bonds, which are generated via radical coupling reaction with the side mercapto groups. These crosslinked PTUs can be tailored into the materials from thermosetting plastics to crosslinked elastomers, depending on the molar masses of α,ω-diamino poly(propylene oxide)s. More importantly, these crosslinked PTUs display excellent reprocessing properties at elevated temperatures, which is attributable to the metathesis reaction of dynamic disulfide bonds.

Abstract
The development of a controlled and reliable method to construct well-defined sulfur-containing polymers has sparked great interest in polymer science. Herein, we present the trial on the copolymerization of isothiocyanates with episulfides in the presence of organic onium salts, which provides direct access to a class of sulfur-rich polymers. This methodology has combined advantages of simple operation, no metals, mild conditions (25-100 °C), controlled polymerization performance (Mn > 105 g mol-1, Đ < 1.3), and high reactivity (turnover frequency over 1000 h-1). The metal-free feature and versatility of the easily accessible monomers, along with fine adjustment of the final properties enable this strategy to be a feasible approach to produce sulfur-rich polymers (16 examples).

Abstract
We report the first preparation of a supramolecular polysulfide polymer, which is a polyrotaxane containing sulfur-styrene copolymer and methylated α-cyclodextrins (TMαCDs) as linear and cyclic molecules, respectively (SPRx). Compared to the sulfur-styrene copolymer prepared by a copolymerization method typically used to synthesize polysulfide polymers, the environmental and thermal stabilities of SPRx are significantly improved because the polysulfide polymer is covered with TMαCD.

Abstract
The superior ability of thiiranes (episulfides) to undergo ring-opening polymerization (ROP) in the presence of anionic initiators allows the preparation of chemically stable polysulfide homopolymers. Incorporation of elemental sulfur (S8) by copolymerization below the floor temperature of S8 permits the placement of a large quantity of sulfur atoms in the polysulfide mainchain. The utility of styrene sulfide (2-phenylthiirane; StS) for copolymerization with elemental sulfur is reported here. A few polysulfides differing depending on the initial ratio of S8 to StS and copolymerization time were synthesized. Various spectroscopic methods (1H NMR, 13C NMR, Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy) were applied to characterize the chemical structure of the copolymers. Additionally, the phase structure and thermal stability of the synthesized polysulfides were investigated using DSC and TGA, respectively. The successful anionic copolymerization of styrene sulfide and elemental sulfur has been demonstrated.

Abstract
Topological polymers possess many advantages over linear polymers. However, when it comes to the poly(monothiocarbonate)s, no topological polymers have been reported. Described herein is a facile and efficient approach for synthesizing well-defined branched poly(monothiocarbonate)s in a "grafting through" manner by copolymerizing carbonyl sulfide (COS) with epichlorohydrin (ECH), where the side-chain forms in situ. The lengths of the side-chains are tunable based on reaction temperatures. More importantly, enhancement in thermal properties of the branched copolymer was observed, as the Tg value increased by 22 °C, compared to the linear analogues. When chiral ECH was utilized, semicrystalline branched poly(monothiocarbonate)s were accessible with a Tm value of 112 °C, which is 40 °C higher than that of the corresponding linear poly(monothiocarbonate)s. The strategy presented herein for synthesizing branched polymers provides efficient and concise access to topological polymers.

Abstract
Electrospun nanofibers of polybenzoxazines (PBzs) were fabricated using an electrospinning process and crosslinked by a sequential thermal treatment. Functionalization by the direct sulfonation process followed after the post-electrospinning modification treatment. The first stage of experiment determined the effects of varying the concentration of sulfuric acid as the sulfonating agent in the sulfonation reaction under ordinary conditions. The second stage examined the mechanism and kinetics of the sulfonation reaction using only concentrated H2SO4 at different reaction time periods of 3 h, 6 h, and 24 h. The mechanism of the sulfonation reaction with PBz nanofibers was proposed with only one sulfonic acid (-SO3H) group attached to each of the repeating units since only first type substitution in the aromatic structure occurs under this condition. The kinetics of the reaction exhibited a logarithmic correlation where the rate of change in the ion exchange capacity (IEC) with the reaction time increased rapidly and then reached a plateau at the reaction time between 18 h and 24 h. Effective sulfonation was confirmed by electron spectroscopy with a characteristic peak associated with the C-S bond owing to the sulfonate group introduced onto the surface of the nanofibers. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy also confirmed these results for varying reaction times. The SEM images showed that sulfonation has no drastic effects on the morphology and microstructure of the nanofibers but a rougher surface was evident due to the wetted fibers with sulfonate groups attached to the surface. EDX spectra exhibited sulfur peaks where the concentration of sulfonate groups present in the nanofibers is directly proportional to the reaction time. From surface wettability studies, it was found that the nanofibers retained the hydrophobicity after sulfonation but the inherent surface property of PBz nanofibers was observed by changing the pH level of water to basic, which switches its surface properties to hydrophilic. The thermal stability of the sulfonated nanofibers showed almost the same behavior compared to non-sulfonated nanofibers except for the 24 h sulfonation case, which has slightly lower onset temperature of degradation.

Abstract
Sulfur utilization is a global concern because of its abundant nature sources and the safety or environmental problems caused by its burning or oxidation during storage, while sulfur-containing polymers are popular materials in virtue of their fascinating properties such as metal coordination ability, high refractive indices, and semiconducting property. The synthesis of sulfur-containing polymers is challenging, especially directly from elemental sulfur. Herein, catalyst-free and scalable multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) of all commercially available elemental sulfur, dicarboxylic acids, and diamines were reported to facilely construct 12 polythioamides with diverse and well-defined structures, high molecular weights (Mw's up to 86 200 g/mol), and excellent yields (up to 99%) from elemental sulfur. Besides commonly used aliphatic diamines, aromatic diamine monomers are also applicable to these multicomponent polymerizations, affording polythioamides with unique rigid structures and improved functionality as compared to those of the previously reported polythioamides. These polythioamides can be applied in gold recovery, which could extract a trace amount of Au3+ from practical acidic leaching solution of discarded electronic waste selectively, rapidly (1 min), sensitively (10 ppb), and efficiently (>99.99%) with high extraction capacity up to 0.60 g· Au3+/g to directly afford high-purity elemental gold after pyrolysis. The MCPs could make use of both abundantly existing sulfur waste and trace amounts of precious gold residue in electronic wastes, demonstrating their great potential in resource utilization.

Abstract
In the present report, an environmentally benign magnetically recoverable nickel(ii)-based nanoreactor as a heterogeneous catalyst has been developed via a template free approach. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalyst is assessed in the confined oxidative coupling of arenethiols with arylhydrazines to form unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides under aerobic conditions. The salient features of our protocol include oxidant- and ligand-free conditions, use of water as a green solvent, room temperature and formation of nitrogen and water as the only by-products. Moreover, a broad range of functional groups are tolerated well and provide the corresponding diaryl sulfides in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst permits facile magnetic recovery and reusability for up to seven runs, making the present protocol highly desirable from industrial and environmental standpoints. An environmentally benign nickel(ii)-based magnetic nanoreactor has been developed for oxidative coupling of arenethiols with arylhydrazines to form unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides in water at room temperature.![]()

WASTE MANAGEMENT (NEW YORK, N.Y.) 2019; 95:78-89. Abstract
This paper presents a review of current routes to utilize sulfur and sulfuric acid. Sulfur is a by-product from sour gas and crude oil processing and the precursor of sulfuric acid. As an oversupply is projected for the near-term future, it is prudent to investigate new sulfur applications and market domains that may facilitate a balancing of supply and demand. This consideration is especially relevant for the UAE, and the Middle East in general, due to the requirement to develop sulfur-rich sour gas resources to meet increasing energy needs. The goal of this review is to understand current sulfur oversupply, not as a problem, but as an opportunity to develop more sustainable technologies. Current routes are reviewed, and possible new applications and their potential as a sulfur sink and a sustainable alternative to existing technologies are discussed. Although sulfur is currently in oversupply, less than 5% positive balance according to Harrisson (2016), it must be noted that it is also a critical component in fertilizer production, having a direct impact on the food supply for the world's growing population. Should the world find itself in a sulfur shortage in the future (which could be possible in the long-term (beyond 2030) as a result of growth in renewable energies, shale gas/oil proliferation and population growth), this would be a much greater problem than the current slight oversupply situation, thus making it important to consider sulfur recoverability as a key factor for any sulfur sink technologies explored.

Abstract
This article reports the efficient preparation of a series of unsymmetrically substituted thioethers through a two-step procedure consisting of an initial metal-free C-H sulfenylation of electron-rich (hetero)arenes with newly prepared succinylthioimidazolium salts. Subsequent reaction of the arylthioimidazolium intermediates with Grignard reagents afford the desired thioethers. The synthetic protocol described is modular, scalable, and high yielding, and provides access to sulfides that are not easy to obtain through the existing methodologies. Importantly, no prefunctionalization of the initial (hetero)arene is required.

Abstract
The cross-coupling reaction of alkenyl bromides with thiols catalyzed by palladium complexes derived from inexpensive dppf ligand is reported. These reactions occur under low catalyst loading and in high yields and display wide scope, including the coupling of bulky thiols and trisubstituted bromoolefins, and functional group tolerance. In addition, the thioetherification of less reactive chloroalkenes and, for the first time, alkenyl tosylates was accomplished using a catalyst generated from CyPF tBu alkylbisphosphine ligand.
