Abstract
Background In the last decades, the P300 Speller paradigm was replicated in many experiments, and collected data were released to the public domain to allow research groups, particularly those in the field of machine learning, to test and improve their algorithms for higher performances of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Training data is needed to learn the identification of brain activity. The more training data are available, the better the algorithms will perform. The availability of larger datasets is highly desirable, eventually obtained by merging datasets from different repositories. The main obstacle to such merging is that all public datasets are released in various file formats because no standard way is established to share these data. Additionally, all datasets necessitate reading documents or scientific papers to retrieve relevant information, which prevents automating the processing. In this study, we thus adopted a unique file format to demonstrate the importance of having a standard and to propose which information should be stored and why. Methods We described our process to convert a dozen of P300 Speller datasets and reported the main encountered problems while converting them into the same file format. All the datasets are characterized by the same 6 × 6 matrix of alphanumeric symbols (characters and numbers or symbols) and by the same subset of acquired signals (8 EEG sensors at the same recording sites). Results and discussion Nearly a million stimuli were converted, relative to about 7000 spelled characters and belonging to 127 subjects. The converted stimuli represent the most extensively available platform for training and testing new algorithms on the specific paradigm - the P300 Speller. The platform could potentially allow exploring transfer learning procedures to reduce or eliminate the time needed for training a classifier to improve the performance and accuracy of such BCI systems.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can produce temporary biochemical imbalance due to leaks through cell membranes or disruption of the axoplasmic flow due to the misalignment of intracellular neurofilaments. If untreated, TBI can lead to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or total disability. Mild TBI (mTBI) accounts for about about 90 percent of all TBI cases. The detection of TBI as soon as it happens is crucial for successful treatment management. Neuroimaging-based tests provide only a structural and functional mapping of the brain with poor temporal resolution. Such tests may not detect mTBI. On the other hand, the electroencephalogram (EEG) provides good spatial resolution and excellent temporal resolution of the brain activities beside its portability and low cost. The objective of this paper is to provide clinicians and scientists with a one-stop source of information to quickly learn about the different technologies used for TBI detection, their advantages and limitations. Our research led us to conclude that even though EEG-based TBI detection is potentially a powerful technology, it is currently not able to detect the presence of a mTBI with high confidence. The focus of the paper is to review existing approaches and provide the reason for the unsuccessful state of EEG-based detection of mTBI.

Abstract
There is an increasing interest in using the Internet of Things (IoT) in the agriculture sector to acquire soil- and crop-related parameters that provide helpful information to manage farms more efficiently. One example of this technology is using IoT soil moisture sensors for scheduling irrigation. Soil moisture sensors are usually deployed in nodes. A more significant number of sensors/nodes is recommended in larger fields, such as those found in broadacre agriculture, to better account for soil heterogeneity. However, this comes at a higher and often limiting cost for farmers (purchase, labour costs from installation and removal, and maintenance). Methodologies that enable maintaining the monitoring capability/intensity with a reduced number of in-field sensors would be valuable for the sector and of great interest. In this study, sensor data analysis conducted across two irrigation seasons in three cotton fields from two cotton-growing areas of Australia, identified a relationship between soil matric potential and cumulative satellite-derived crop evapotranspiration (ETcn) between irrigation events. A second-degree function represents this relationship, which is affected by the crop development stage, rainfall, irrigation events and the transition between saturated and non-saturated soil. Two machine learning models [a Dense Multilayer Perceptron (DMP) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithms] were studied to explore these second-degree function properties and assess whether the models were capable of learning the pattern of the soil matric potential-ETcn relation to estimate soil moisture from satellite-derived ETc measurements. The algorithms performance evaluation in predicting soil matric potential applied the k-fold method in each farm individually and combining data from all fields and seasons. The latter approach made it possible to avoid the influence of farm consultants' decisions regarding when to irrigate the crop in the training process. Both algorithms accurately estimated soil matric potential for individual (up to 90% of predicted values within ±10 kPa) and combined datasets (73% of predicted values within ±10 kPa). The technique presented here can accurately monitor soil matric potential in the root zone of cotton plants with reduced in-field sensor equipment and offers promising applications for its use in irrigation-decision systems.

Abstract
Smart farming aims to improve farming using modern technologies and smart devices. Smart devices help farmers to collect and analyze data regarding different aspects of their business. These data are utilized by various stakeholders, including farmers, technology providers, supply chain investigators, and agricultural service providers. These data sources can be considered big data due to their volume, velocity, and variety. The wide use of data collection and communication technologies has increased concerns about the privacy of farmers and their data. Although some previous studies have reviewed the security aspects of smart farming, the privacy challenges and solutions are not sufficiently explored in the literature. In this paper, we present a holistic review of big data privacy in smart farming. The paper utilizes a data lifecycle schema and describes privacy concerns and requirements in smart farming in each of the phases of this data lifecycle. Moreover, it provides a comprehensive review of the existing solutions and the state-of-the-art technologies that can enhance data privacy in smart farming.

Abstract
Ischemic heart disease (IHD) causes discomfort or irritation in the chest. According to the World Health Organization, coronary heart disease is the major cause of mortality in Pakistan. Accurate model with the highest precision is necessary to avoid fatalities. Previously several models are tried with different attributes to enhance the detection accuracy but failed to do so. In this research study, an artificial approach to categorize the current stage of heart disease is carried out. Our model predicts a precise diagnosis of chronic diseases. The system is trained using a training dataset and then tested using a test dataset. Machine learning methods such as LR, NB, and RF are applied to forecast the development of a disease. Experimental outcomes of this research study have proven that our strategy has excelled other procedures with maximum accuracy of 99 percent for RF, 97 percent for NB, and 98 percent for LR. With such high accuracy, the number of deaths per year of ischemic heart disease will be slightly decreased.

Abstract
The urbanisation process moves quickly in emerging nations like India and Bangladesh, transforming natural landscapes into unsustainable landscapes. Consequently, growing development has had a significant impact on agricultural land as a natural environment. Moreover, there is a scarcity of research on fragmentation probability modelling in the extant literature. Thus, by combining random forest (RF) and bagging with the datasets which are multi-temporal in a GIS framework, the probability of fragmentation of LULC at Jangipur subdivision in India and Bangladesh can be modelled. Parallelepiped, Mohalnobis distance, support vector machines (SVM), spectral angle mapper (SAM), and artificial neural networks (ANN) classifiers were used for LULC classification, where SVM (Kappa coefficient: 0.87) surpassed other classifiers. The LULC maps for 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 were created using the best classifier (SVM). During this time, the built-up area grew from 23.769 to 158.125 km2. Then, using an ANN-based cellular automata model, the future LULC map for 2030 was predicted (CA-ANN). In 2030, the built-up area would be 201.58 km2. Then the matrices of class and landscape were taken out of the LULC maps utilising FRAGSTAT software and included the patch number (NP), largest patch index (LPI), edge density (ED), contagion index (percentage) (CONTAG), perimeter and area (P/A), aggregation index (AI), landscape percentage (PLAND), the area of class (CA), patch density (PD), edge in total (TE), total core area (TCA), and largest shape index (LSI). The validation results revealed that bagging (0.915 = AUC) and RF (0.874 = AUC) are capable of assessing fragmentation probability, with the bagging model having the greatest precision level of the two. Almost 20% of the total LULC was in a high and very high zone of fragmentation vulnerability, necessitating the use of direct measures to safeguard it. As a result, adequate LULC management is required.

Abstract
Smart Farming (SF) is an emerging technology in the current agricultural landscape. The aim of Smart Farming is to provide tools for various agricultural and farming operations to improve yield by reducing cost, waste, and required manpower. SF is a data-driven approach that can mitigate losses that occur due to extreme weather conditions and calamities. The influx of data from various sensors, and the introduction of information communication technologies (ICTs) in the field of farming has accelerated the implementation of disruptive technologies (DTs) such as machine learning and big data. Application of these predictive and innovative tools in agriculture is crucial for handling unprecedented conditions such as climate change and the increasing global population. In this study, we review the recent advancements in the field of Smart Farming, which include novel use cases and projects around the globe. An overview of the challenges associated with the adoption of such technologies in their respective regions is also provided. A brief analysis of the general sentiment towards Smart Farming technologies is also performed by manually annotating YouTube comments and making use of the pattern library. Preliminary findings of our study indicate that, though there are several barriers to the implementation of SF tools, further research and innovation can alleviate such risks and ensure sustainability of the food supply. The exploratory sentiment analysis also suggests that most digital users are not well-informed about such technologies.

Abstract
There are increasingly strict regulations surrounding the purchase and use of combustible tobacco products (i.e., cigarettes); simultaneously, the use of other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping products), has dramatically increased. However, public attitudes toward vaping vary widely, and the health effects of vaping are still largely unknown. As a popular social media, Twitter contains rich information shared by users about their behaviors and experiences, including opinions on vaping. It is very challenging to identify vaping-related tweets to source useful information manually. In the current study, we proposed to develop a detection model to accurately identify vaping-related tweets using machine learning and deep learning methods. Specifically, we applied seven popular machine learning and deep learning algorithms, including Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, XGBoost, Multilayer Perception, Transformer Neural Network, and stacking and voting ensemble models to build our customized classification model. We extracted a set of sample tweets during an outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping-related lung injury (EVALI) in 2019 and created an annotated corpus to train and evaluate these models. After comparing the performance of each model, we found that the stacking ensemble learning achieved the highest performance with an F1-score of 0.97. All models could achieve 0.90 or higher after tuning hyperparameters. The ensemble learning model has the best average performance. Our study findings provide informative guidelines and practical implications for the automated detection of themed social media data for public opinions and health surveillance purposes.

Abstract
Machine Learning methods can play a key role in predicting the spread of respiratory infection with the help of predictive analytics. Machine Learning techniques help mine data to better estimate and predict the COVID-19 infection status. A Fine-tuned Ensemble Classification approach for predicting the death and cure rates of patients from infection using Machine Learning techniques has been proposed for different states of India. The proposed classification model is applied to the recent COVID-19 dataset for India, and a performance evaluation of various state-of-the-art classifiers to the proposed model is performed. The classifiers forecasted the patients’ infection status in different regions to better plan resources and response care systems. The appropriate classification of the output class based on the extracted input features is essential to achieve accurate results of classifiers. The experimental outcome exhibits that the proposed Hybrid Model reached a maximum F1-score of 94% compared to Ensembles and other classifiers like Support Vector Machine, Decision Trees, and Gaussian Naïve Bayes on a dataset of 5004 instances through 10-fold cross-validation for predicting the right class. The feasibility of automated prediction for COVID-19 infection cure and death rates in the Indian states was demonstrated.

Abstract
Traditional machine learning methods of plant leaf disease detection lack successful performances due to poor feature representation and correlation. This paper presents a novel methodology for automatic plant leaf disease detection using cascaded deep convolutional neural network (CDCNN) which focusses on increasing the feature representation and correlation factors. It provides distinctive features that gives low intra-class variability and higher inter-class variability. CDCNN were performed on a plant-village leaf disease database which consists of 13 classes of tomato, potato, and pepper bell plant diseases; DCNN model performs better with an overall accuracy, recall, and precision of 98.50%, 0.98, and 0.97 respectively. Additionally, performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on real time cotton leaf database for bacterial blight, leaf miner, and spider mite diseases detection and provides 99.00% accuracy. The proposed DCNN outperforms well compared to traditional machine learning and deep learning models and is able to detect the diseases present in the leaves of the plant.

Geospatial and Machine Learning Regression Techniques for Analyzing Food Access Impact on Health Issues in Sustainable Communities. ISPRS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GEO-INFORMATION 2021. Abstract
Food access is a major key component in food security, as it is every individual’s right to proper access to a nutritious and affordable food supply. Low access to healthy food sources influences people’s diet and activity habits. Guilford County in North Carolina has a high ranking in low food security and a high rate of health issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to investigate the geospatial correlation between health issues and food access areas. The secondary objective was to quantitatively compare food access areas and heath issues’ descriptive statistics. The tertiary objective was to compare several machine learning techniques and find the best model that fit health issues against various food access variables with the highest performance accuracy. In this study, we adopted a food-access perspective to show that communities that have residents who have equitable access to healthy food options are typically less vulnerable to health-related disasters. We propose a methodology to help policymakers lower the number of health issues in Guilford County by analyzing such issues via correlation with respect to food access. Specifically, we conducted a geographic information system mapping methodology to examine how access to healthy food options influenced health and mortality outcomes in one of the largest counties in the state of North Carolina. We created geospatial maps representing food deserts—areas with scarce access to nutritious food; food swamps—areas with more availability of unhealthy food options compared to healthy food options; and food oases—areas with a relatively higher availability of healthy food options than unhealthy options. Our results presented a positive correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.819 among obesity and the independent variables of transportation access, and population. The correlation coefficient matrix analysis helped to identify a strong negative correlation between obesity and median income. Overall, this study offers valuable insights that can help health authorities develop preemptive preparedness for healthcare disasters.

Abstract
Companies in the same supply chain influence each other, so sharing information enables more efficient supply chain management. An efficient supply chain must have a symmetry of information between participating entities, but in reality, the information is asymmetric, causing problems. The sustainability of the supply chain continues to be threatened because companies are reluctant to disclose information to others. If companies participating in the supply chain do not disclose accurate information, the next best way to improve the sustainability of the supply chain is to use data from the supply chain to determine each enterprise’s information. This study takes data from the supply chain and then uses machine learning algorithms to find which enterprise the data refer to when new data from unknown sources arise. The machine learning algorithms used are logistic regression, random forest, naive Bayes, decision tree, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, and multi-layer perceptron. Indicators for evaluating the performance of multi-class classification machine learning methods are accuracy, confusion matrix, precision, recall, and F1-score. The experimental results showed that LR and MLP accurately predicted companies (tiers), but NB, DT, RF, SVM, and K-NN did not accurately predict companies. In addition, the performance similarity of machine learning algorithms through experiments was classified into LR and MLP groups, NB and DT groups, and RF, SVM, and K-NN groups.

Abstract
In recent years, social responsibility has been revolutionizing sustainable development. After the development of new mathematical techniques, the improvement of computers’ processing capacity and the greater availability of possible explanatory variables, the analysis of these topics is moving towards the use of different machine learning techniques. However, within the field of machine learning, the use of Biplot techniques is little known for these analyses. For this reason, in this paper we explore the performance of two of the most popular techniques in multivariate statistics: External Logistic Biplot and the HJ-Biplot, to analyse the data structure in social responsibility studies. The results obtained from the sample of companies representing the Fortune Global 500 list indicate that the most frequently reported indicators are related to the social aspects are labour practices and decent work and society. On the contrary, the disclosure of indicators is less frequently related to human rights and product responsibility. Additionally, we have identified the countries and sectors with the highest CSR in social matters. We discovered that both machine learning algorithms are extremely competitive and practical to apply in CSR since they are simple to implement and work well with relatively big datasets.

Abstract
In recent years, machine learning (ML) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), a particular subset of ML, have been adopted by various areas of healthcare. A number of diagnostic and prognostic algorithms have been designed and implemented across a range of orthopaedic sub-specialties to date, with many positive results. However, the methodology of many of these studies is flawed, and few compare the use of ML with the current approach in clinical practice. Spinal surgery has advanced rapidly over the past three decades, particularly in the areas of implant technology, advanced surgical techniques, biologics, and enhanced recovery protocols. It is therefore regarded an innovative field. Inevitably, spinal surgeons will wish to incorporate ML into their practice should models prove effective in diagnostic or prognostic terms. The purpose of this article is to review published studies that describe the application of neural networks to spinal surgery and which actively compare ANN models to contemporary clinical standards allowing evaluation of their efficacy, accuracy, and relatability. It also explores some of the limitations of the technology, which act to constrain the widespread adoption of neural networks for diagnostic and prognostic use in spinal care. Finally, it describes the necessary considerations should institutions wish to incorporate ANNs into their practices. In doing so, the aim of this review is to provide a practical approach for spinal surgeons to understand the relevant aspects of neural networks. Abstract
Alzheimer's disease has been one of the major concerns recently. Around 45 million people are suffering from this disease. Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain disease with an unspecified cause and pathogenesis which primarily affects older people. The main cause of Alzheimer's disease is Dementia, which progressively damages the brain cells. People lost their thinking ability, reading ability, and many more from this disease. A machine learning system can reduce this problem by predicting the disease. The main aim is to recognize Dementia among various patients. This paper represents the result and analysis regarding detecting Dementia from various machine learning models. The Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS) dataset has been used for the development of the system. The dataset is small, but it has some significant values. The dataset has been analyzed and applied in several machine learning models. Support vector machine, logistic regression, decision tree, and random forest have been used for prediction. First, the system has been run without fine-tuning and then with fine-tuning. Comparing the results, it is found that the support vector machine provides the best results among the models. It has the best accuracy in detecting Dementia among numerous patients. The system is simple and can easily help people by detecting Dementia among them.

Abstract
Mass-spectrometry-based proteomics enables quantitative analysis of thousands of human proteins. However, experimental and computational challenges restrict progress in the field. This review summarizes the recent flurry of machine-learning strategies using artificial deep neural networks (or "deep learning") that have started to break barriers and accelerate progress in the field of shotgun proteomics. Deep learning now accurately predicts physicochemical properties of peptides from their sequence, including tandem mass spectra and retention time. Furthermore, deep learning methods exist for nearly every aspect of the modern proteomics workflow, enabling improved feature selection, peptide identification, and protein inference.

Abstract
Traditional systems of handwriting recognition have relied on handcrafted features and a large amount of prior knowledge. Training an Optical character recognition (OCR) system based on these prerequisites is a challenging task. Research in the handwriting recognition field is focused around deep learning techniques and has achieved breakthrough performance in the last few years. Still, the rapid growth in the amount of handwritten data and the availability of massive processing power demands improvement in recognition accuracy and deserves further investigation. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are very effective in perceiving the structure of handwritten characters/words in ways that help in automatic extraction of distinct features and make CNN the most suitable approach for solving handwriting recognition problems. Our aim in the proposed work is to explore the various design options like number of layers, stride size, receptive field, kernel size, padding and dilution for CNN-based handwritten digit recognition. In addition, we aim to evaluate various SGD optimization algorithms in improving the performance of handwritten digit recognition. A network's recognition accuracy increases by incorporating ensemble architecture. Here, our objective is to achieve comparable accuracy by using a pure CNN architecture without ensemble architecture, as ensemble architectures introduce increased computational cost and high testing complexity. Thus, a CNN architecture is proposed in order to achieve accuracy even better than that of ensemble architectures, along with reduced operational complexity and cost. Moreover, we also present an appropriate combination of learning parameters in designing a CNN that leads us to reach a new absolute record in classifying MNIST handwritten digits. We carried out extensive experiments and achieved a recognition accuracy of 99.87% for a MNIST dataset.

Application of Random Forest and ICON Models Combined with Weather Forecasts to Predict Soil Temperature and Water Content in a Greenhouse. WATER 2020. Abstract
Climate change might potentially cause extreme weather events to become more frequent and intense. It could also enhance water scarcity and reduce food security. More efficient water management techniques are thus required to ensure a stable food supply and quality. Maintaining proper soil water content and soil temperature is necessary for efficient water management in agricultural practices. The usage of water and fertilizers can be significantly improved with a precise water content prediction tool. In this study, we proposed a new framework that combines weather forecast data, numerical models, and machine learning methods to simulate and predict the soil temperature and volumetric water content in a greenhouse. To test the framework, we performed greenhouse experiments with cherry tomatoes. The numerical models and machine learning methods we selected were Newton’s law of cooling, HYDRUS-1D, the random forest model, and the ICON (inferring connections of networks) model. The measured air temperature, soil temperature, and volumetric water content during the cultivation period were used for model calibration and validation. We compared the performances of the models for soil temperature and volumetric water content predictions. The results showed that the random forest model performed a more accurate prediction than other methods under the limited information provided from greenhouse experiments. This approach provides a framework that can potentially learn best water management practices from experienced farmers and provide intelligent information for smart greenhouse management.
