Mercury, food webs, and marine mammals: implications of diet and climate change for human health

We modeled the flow of methyl mercury, a toxic global pollutant, in the Faroe Islands marine ecosystem and compared average human methyl mercury exposure from consumption of pilot whale meat and fish (cod, Gadus morhua) with current tolerable weekly intake (TWI) levels. Under present conditions and climate change scenarios, methyl mercury increased in the ecosystem, translating into increased human exposure over time. However, we saw greater changes as a result of changing fishing mortalities. A large portion of the general human population exceed the TWI levels set by the World Health Organization [WHO; 1.6 microg/kg body weight (bw)], and they all exceed the reference dose (RfD) of 0.1 microg/kg bw/day set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA; equivalent to a TWI of 0.7 microg/kg bw). As a result of an independent study documenting that Faroese children exposed prenatally to methyl mercury had reduced cognitive abilities, pregnant women have decreased their intake of whale meat and were below the TWI levels set by the WHO and the U.S. EPA. Cod had approximately 95% lower methyl mercury concentrations than did pilot whale. Thus, the high and harmful levels of methyl mercury in the diet of Faroe Islanders are driven by whale meat consumption, and the increasing impact of climate change is likely to exacerbate this situation. Significantly, base inflow rates of mercury into the environment would need to be reduced by approximately 50% to ensure levels of intake below the WHO TWI levels, given current levels of whale consumption.

Concentrations of lead and mercury in multimedia samples from homes near the former Clark Air Base, Philippines

We measured lead and mercury in samples collected from 31 homes in communities near the former Clark Air Base, Philippines during May and October 2002. Sample media included water used for drinking and cooking, house dust and entryway soil. Composite samples of 15 food items purchased at local markets were also collected. Samples were analyzed for total lead (Pb) and total mercury (Hg) to evaluate the relative importance of each media to residential exposure concentrations in the community adjacent to Clark (Community A) versus a control community 5 km away (Community B). In general, we measured low (e.g. background) to undetectable levels of the target analytes in all media sampled with two important exceptions. First, the Hg concentrations we measured in canned mackerel composites, which were within the range reported for mackerel from other locations worldwide, may pose a risk to pregnant women who are frequent consumers (e.g. one or more cans per day). Second, we measured Pb above the USEPA residential screening concentration (400 mug/g) in dust and soil from two homes, illustrating the need for periodic residential lead monitoring in these and other communities in the Philippines. We found no significant difference between Communities A and B with respect to Pb and Hg concentrations in water or food, although we were not able to detect very low levels of Pb in most of the foods we sampled because of trace Pb contamination added during sample homogenization. Although the Pb levels we measured in dust and soil from Community A homes were higher on average than Community B homes, the levels in both communities were low (e.g. background) thus we did not investigate the difference further. To our knowledge, these are the first reported measurements of Pb in house dust in the Philippines. The concentrations of Pb we measured in house dust were significantly higher than those in entryway soil from both communities, adding empirical support to the assertion that yard soil should not be considered a proxy for house dust in exposure studies in the Philippines or elsewhere.

Subchronic mercury treatment of rats in different phases of ontogenesis: functional effects on the central and peripheral nervous system

Electrophysiological changes caused by inorganic mercury administration during the pre- and/or postnatal development were studied. Pregnant female Wistar rats were treated, by gavage, with 0.4, 0.8 or 1.6 mg/kg mercury (HgCl2 diluted in distilled water): 1/ from day 5 to 15 during pregnancy (P protocol); 2/ from day 5 to 15 of pregnancy+for 4 weeks of lactation (P+L protocol); 3/ from day 5 to 15 of pregnancy+for 4 weeks of lactation, and the offspring were further treated for 8 weeks post-weaning (P+L+P protocol). Electrophysiological parameters (electrocorticogram, cortical evoked potentials, conduction velocity and refractory periods of peripheral nerve) of the male offspring from dams in the groups treated according to the above protocols were investigated at the age of 12 weeks. The rats' spontaneous and evoked electrophysiological activity underwent dose- and treatment-dependent changes following the treatment (increased frequency of spontaneous activity, lengthened latencies and duration of evoked potentials, lower conduction velocity of the peripheral nerve, etc.). In the same rats, however, the treatment failed to cause major signs of general intoxication. The results emphasize the functional neurotoxic risk arising from the continuous presence of inorganic mercury in the human environment, and point to possible use of early functional changes for monitoring the effects of mercury.
