Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate, ex vivo, the push-out bond strength of a new filling material (Smartseal) compared with gutta-percha/AH-26. A total of 40 extracted single-rooted human teeth were used. After instrumentation using the ProTaper rotary system, the root canals were filled as follows: Group 1, Smartseal sealer and a 0.06 taper Smartpoint calibrated to apical tip size 30; Group 2, Smartseal sealer and an F3 SmartpointPT; Group 3, AH-26 sealer and a single F3 ProTaper gutta-percha cone and Group 4, AH-26 sealer and gutta-percha using the cold lateral condensation technique. Two successive disk shaped slices were cut from each root sample and the bond strength was measured using the push-out test. Two-way analysis of variance was used for data analysis with the level of significance set at 0.05. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences (p > 0.05) between the mean bond strengths of the various groups; thus indicating there was no difference in adhesion to dentine between the Smartseal system and gutta-percha/AH-26 applied using either the single cone or lateral condensation technique.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength
of different root canal sealers to dentin. Material and Methods Forty extracted single-rooted human teeth were examined and the coronal and middle
thirds of the canals were prepared with a 1.50 mm post drill (FibreKor Post
System, Pentron). The teeth were allocated in two experimental groups, irrigated
with 2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA or saline solution (control group) and instrumented using
Race rotary files (FKG) to a size #40 at the working length. Then, the groups were
divided into four subgroups and filled with Epiphany sealer (Group 1), EndoREZ
(Group 2), AH26 (Group 3) and Grossman's Sealer (Group 4). After 2 weeks of
storage in 100% humidity at 37ºC, all teeth were sectioned transversally into
2-mm-thick discs. Push-out tests were performed at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min
using a universal testing machine. The maximum load at failure was recorded and
expressed in MPa. Results Means (±SD) in root canals irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA were: G1
(21.6±6.0), G2 (15.2±3.7), G3 (14.6±4.5) and G4 (11.7±4.1).Two-way ANOVA and
Tukey's test showed the highest bond strength for the Epiphany's group (p<
0.01) when compared to the other tested sealers. Saline solution decreased the
values of bond-strength (p<0.05) for all sealers. Conclusion Epiphany sealer presented higher bond strength values to dentin in both irrigating
protocols, and the use of 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA increased the bond strength
values for all sealers.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] combined with chitosan solutions against Enterococcus faecalis-infected root canal dentin and the effect of this new intracanal medicament on the bond strength of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin. An experimental intracanal medicament was prepared by mixing different concentrations of chitosan solution (25%, 50%, and 100%, W/V) to Ca(OH)2 powder. Antibacterial activity was evaluated and the total numbers of colony forming units were determined. Bonding ability of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin was evaluated using push-out bond strength test. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison tests. We found that Ca(OH)2 combined with different concentrations of chitosan solutions showed better antibacterial activity than Ca(OH)2 mixed with saline, without significantly affecting the bond strength of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin (P > 0.05). The findings suggest that Ca(OH)2 combined with chitosan is a promising intracanal medicament and may be effective in endodontic therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To comparatively evaluate adhesive properties of selected root canal fillings through the measurement of the material-dentine interfacial bond strength. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty extracted single-rooted human teeth with one canal each were prepared using Hero instruments to size 30.04. Teeth were divided into four subgroups depending on the root canal filling material and the method of obturation: Resilon/Epiphany - a thermoplastic method (IA), Resilon/Epiphany - a matching single-point method (IB), gutta-percha/Roeko Seal Automix - a thermoplastic method (IIA) and gutta-percha/Roeko Seal Automix - a matching single-point method (IIB). The obturated roots were cut perpendicular to the long axis to create 1.7 mm thick slices. The bond strength was measured for each test slice with push -out testing machine. RESULTS The highest push-out bond strength was registered in subgroup IB (3.98 ± 1.33 MPa). Significantly lower bond strength was observed in subgroups IA (0.50 ± 0.24 MPa), IIA (0.33 ± 0.18 MPa) and IIB (0.08 ± 0.03 MPa) (p<0.001). No statistically significant differences in material-dentine interfacial bond strength values were observed between IA and IIA, IA and IIB, IIA and IIB subgroups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The push-out bond strength of the material-dentine interface was dependent on the type of material used and the root canal filling technique. The R/E system exhibited better adhesion ability to intraradicular dentine than G/RSA. The highest bond strength was observed for Resilon/Epiphany introduced with the single-cone technique.

Abstract
AIM To assess the push-out bond strength of two new calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers in the root canals of extracted teeth. METHODOLOGY Thirty extracted single-rooted central incisors of similar sizes were selected randomly and distributed to three groups (n = 10). All canals were instrumented using ProTaper rotary instruments to achieve tapered canal walls. Irrigation was performed using 5 mL 2.5% NaOCl between each instrument, and the smear layer was removed using 5 mL 17% EDTA. The canals were filled with three different sealers using a cold lateral compaction technique: group 1: AH Plus + gutta-percha, group 2: I Root SP + gutta-percha and group 3: MTA Fillapex + gutta-percha. Three horizontal sections were prepared at a thickness of 1 mm ± 0.1 in the apical, middle and coronal parts of each root. The test specimens were subjected to the push-out test method using a Universal Test Machine (Instron, Canton, MA, USA) that carried 1-mm, 0.5-mm and 0.3-mm plungers for coronal, middle and apical specimens, respectively. The loading speed was 1 mm min(-1) . The push-out data were analysed by two-way analysis of variance (anova) and the post hoc Holm-Sidak test, with significance set at P < 0.05. RESULTS In the coronal specimens, there was no significant difference between the sealers. In the middle and apical segments, there was no significant difference between I Root SP and AH Plus groups. However, the I Root SP and AH Plus had significantly higher bond strength values than the MTA Fillapex (P < 0.05). In terms of root segments, the bond strengths in the middle specimens and the apical specimens were higher compared with the bond strengths in the coronal specimens (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the bond strengths in the middle and apical specimens. CONCLUSION MTA Fillapex had the lowest push-out bond values to root dentine compared with other sealers.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the bond strength of a new bioceramic sealer (EndoSequence BC Sealer) and AH Plus in the presence or absence of smear layer. Extracted single-rooted human teeth were prepared and randomly divided into four groups. In groups 1 and 3, the root canals were finally irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl and smear layer was not removed, but in groups 2 and 4, the root canals were finally irrigated with 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCl in order to remove the smear layer. In groups 1 and 2, the root canals were obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus, but in groups 3 and 4, obturation was performed with gutta-percha/EndoSequence BC Sealer. Push-out bond strength and failure modes were evaluated. The bond strength of gutta-percha/AH Plus and gutta-percha/EndoSequence BC Sealer was not significantly different (P = 0.89). The presence or absence of smear layer did not significantly affect the bond strength of filling materials (P = 0.69). The mode of bond failure was mainly cohesive for all groups. In conclusion, the bond strength of the new bioceramic sealer was equal to that of AH Plus with or without the smear layer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There have been varied results from studies comparing postendodontic fracture resistance between teeth obturated with Resilon or gutta-percha. This study was performed to evaluate the fracture resistance of roots obturated by using Resilon (RealSeal system) or gutta-percha (with AH Plus sealer). METHODS Eighty extracted human mandibular single-rooted premolars stored in 10% formalin were used in the study. They were prepared by using a crown-down technique, debrided with NaOCl, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and sterile water and divided into 4 groups. Obturation was performed by using the lateral condensation method. The negative control group consisted of unfilled specimens, and the positive control group consisted of those obturated with flowable, dual-cure composite resin. All root specimens were stored for 2 weeks in 100% humidity to allow complete setting of the sealer. Each specimen was mounted in acrylic in a polyvinyl ring and tested for fracture resistance with the Universal testing machine. The loading fixture of the machine was mounted with its spherical tip aligned with the center of the canal opening of each root. A vertical loading force was applied until it fractured the root. The force values were subjected to statistical analysis including analysis of variance and Fisher least significant difference testing. RESULTS Teeth obturated with Resilon were more resistant to fracture than those obturated with gutta-percha. The difference was found to be highly significant (P=.00001). CONCLUSIONS Resilon increased the resistance to fracture of single-rooted teeth in vitro.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the leakage of root canal fillings of gutta-percha or Resilon cones in association with AH Plus or Epiphany sealer. STUDY DESIGN Four groups of premolars (n = 64) were instrumented to size 45/.04 ProFile and filled with laterally compacted gutta-percha cones or Resilon cones in association with AH Plus or Epiphany sealer. The specimens were stored for 2 weeks at 37 degrees C and 100% humidity. After that, leakage was measured using the fluid filtration method and determined as microL/min.10 psi. RESULTS Homogeneity of variance and multiple comparisons tests were performed and indicated that root fillings with the combination of gutta-percha cones and AH Plus sealer showed lower leakage values (P < .05) than the other groups. CONCLUSION Considering the experimental conditions and the results obtained, it was concluded that fillings made with gutta-percha cones in combination with AH Plus sealer had the best performance.

Abstract
The use of an adequate method for evaluation of the adhesion of root canal filling materials provides more reliable results to allow comparison of the materials and substantiate their clinical choice. The aims of this study were to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) test and push-out test for evaluation of the adhesion of an epoxy-based endodontic sealer (AH Plus) to dentin and guttapercha, and to assess the failure modes on the debonded surfaces by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three groups were established (n=7): in group 1, root cylinders obtained from human canines were embedded in acrylic resin and had their canals prepared and filled with sealer; in group 2, longitudinal sections of dentin cylinders were embedded in resin with the canal surface smoothed and turned upwards; in group 3, gutta-percha cylinders were embedded in resin. Polyethylene tubes filled with sealer were positioned on the polished surface of the specimens (groups 2 and 3). The push-out test (group 1) and the SBS test (groups 2 and 3) were performed in an Instron universal testing machine running at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Means (±SD) in MPa were: G1 (8.8±1.13), G2 (5.9±1.05) and G3 (3.8±0.55). Statistical analysis by ANOVA and Student's t-test (α=0.05) revealed statistically significant differences (p<0.01) among the groups. SEM analysis showed a predominance of adhesive and mixed failures of AH Plus sealer. The tested surface affected significantly the results with the sealer reaching higher bond strength to dentin than to guttapercha with the SBS test. The comparison of the employed methodologies showed that the SBS test produced significantly lower bond strength values than the push-out test, was skilful in determining the adhesion of AH Plus sealer to dentin and gutta-percha, and required specimens that could be easily prepared for SEM, presenting as a viable alternative for further experiments.

Abstract
AIM To examine the dislocation resistance of three root canal sealers from radicular dentine with and without immersion in a simulated body fluid (SBF), using a modified push-out test design that produced simulated canal spaces of uniform dimensions under identical cleaning and shaping conditions. METHODOLOGY Sixty single-rooted caries-free human canine teeth were used. Standardized simulated canal spaces were created using 0.04 taper ProFile instruments along the coronal, middle and apical thirds of longitudinal tooth slabs. Following NaOCl/ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid cleaning, the cavities were filled with ProRoot Endo Sealer, AH Plus Jet or Pulp Canal Sealer. After setting, half of the cavities were tested with a fibre-optic light-illuminated push-out testing device. The rest were immersed in SBF for 4 weeks before push-out evaluation. Failure modes were examined with stereomicroscopy and field emission (FE)-scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS Location of the sealer-filled cavities did not affect push-out strengths. ProRoot Endo Sealer exhibited higher push-out strengths than the other two sealers particularly after SBF storage (P < 0.001). Failure modes were predominantly adhesive and mixed for Pulp Canal Sealer and AH Plus Jet, and predominantly cohesive for ProRoot Endo Sealer. Spherical amorphous calcium phosphate-like phases that spontaneously transformed into apatite-like phases were seen in the fractured specimens of ProRoot Endo Sealer after SBF storage. CONCLUSIONS When tested in bulk without a main core, both 'sealer type' and 'SBF storage' were significant in affecting push-out results. The ProRoot Endo Sealer demonstrated the presence of spherical amorphous calcium phosphate-like phases and apatite-like phases (i.e. ex vivo bioactivity) after SBF storage.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of Epiphany resin-based sealer to dentin walls after placement of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] dressings. Fifteen extracted single-rooted human teeth were instrumented using 2.5% NaOCl + EDTA as irrigants. The teeth were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=5), according to the intracanal dressing: G1= Ca(OH)2 + saline; G2= Ca(OH)2 + 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) gel; and G3= saline (control). After 10 days of storage in 100% humidity at 37 degrees C, the dressings were removed and the root canals were filled with Epiphany sealer. After additional 48 h of storage, the specimens were sectioned transversally into 2-mm-thick discs. Push-out tests were performed (1 mm/min, Instron 4411) and the maximum loads at failure were recorded in MPa. One-way ANOVA and Newman-Keuls tests showed a statistically significant decrease in bond strength when a Ca(OH)2 dressing was used before root canal filling with Epiphany (G1= 10.18 +/- 1.99 and G2= 9.98 +/- 2.97) compared to the control group (13.82 +/- 3.9) (p< 0.05). It may be concluded that the use of Ca(OH)2 as an intracanal dressing material affected the adhesion of Epiphany to the root canal walls, but even though the values were within the acceptable range found in the literature.
