Abstract
We report on the interplane c-axis electronic response of FeTe(0.55)Se(0.45) investigated by infrared spectroscopy. We find that the normal-state c-axis electronic response of FeTe(0.55)Se(0.45) is incoherent and bears significant similarities to those of mildly underdoped cuprates. The c-axis optical conductivity σ(c)(ω) of FeTe(0.55)Se(0.45) does not display well-defined Drude response at all temperatures. As temperature decreases, σ(c)(ω) is continuously suppressed. The incoherent c-axis response is found to be related to the strong dissipation in the ab-plane transport: a pattern that holds true for various correlated materials as well as FeTe(0.55)Se(0.45).

Abstract
We propose that an extension of the exciton concept to doped Mott insulators offers a fruitful insight into challenging issues of the copper oxide superconductors. In our extension, new fermionic excitations called cofermions emerge in conjunction to generalized excitons. The cofermions hybridize with conventional quasiparticles. Then a hybridization gap opens, and is identified as the pseudogap observed in the underdoped cuprates. The resultant Fermi-surface reconstruction naturally explains a number of unusual properties of the underdoped cuprates, such as the Fermi arc and/or pocket formation.

Abstract
X-ray absorption spectra on the overdoped high-temperature superconductors Tl2Ba2CuO(6+delta) and La(2-x)SrxCuO(4+/-delta) reveal a striking departure in the electronic structure from that of the underdoped regime. The upper Hubbard band, identified with strong correlation effects, is not observed on the oxygen K edge, while the lowest-energy prepeak gains less intensity than expected above p approximately 0.21. This suggests a breakdown of the Zhang-Rice singlet approximation and a loss of correlation effects or a significant shift in the most fundamental parameters of the system, rendering single-band Hubbard models inapplicable. Such fundamental changes suggest that the overdoped regime may offer a distinct route to understanding in the cuprates.

Abstract
We theoretically investigate loop currents generated by a Berry phase that arises from spin vortices and argue that a coherent collection of them forms a supercurrent in cuprate superconductors. First, we explain enhanced Nernst signals in cuprates using a fictitious electric field that arises from flow of spin vortices with their centers at sites where lattice-distortion-clad holes (small polaronic holes) reside. Assuming the coexistence of holes in large and small polaron forms, the magnitude of the Nernst signal is shown to be proportional to density and mobility of small polarons, and expressed as e(N) = c(3)T(-1)e(-0.5W(p)/k(B)T)/(1 + (2pim*k(B)T)/(n(s)h(2))e(-W(p)/k(B)T)), where c(3) is a constant, W(p) is the small polaron formation energy, n(s) is the surface density of sites, and m* is the effective mass of the large polaron; by treating unknown parameters as fitting parameters, this formula follows the experimental temperature dependence very well. From the obtained W(p) value, it is indicated that superconductivity occurs at temperatures where almost all of the holes become small polarons; thus, the conventional current generation mechanism is ineffective at temperatures around T(c); however, loop current generation by the spin Berry phase is effective. We calculate the superconducting transition temperature as an order-disorder transition temperature of the loop currents. The doped hole concentration, x, dependence of the transition temperature is obtained as T(c) = T(0) ln x/x(0) and agrees with experimental data, where T(0) and x(0) are treated as fitting parameters. Lastly, we briefly mention an artificial nanostructure that generates a persistent current by utilizing the spin Berry phase.

Abstract
Charge excitations in stripe-ordered 214 compounds La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4} and 1/8-doped La2-x(Ba or Sr)xCuO4 are studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the hard x-ray regime. We observe = or approximately 1 eV excitation with a momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nickelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. They are interpreted as collective stripe excitations or anomalous softening of the charge excitonic modes of the in-gap states.

Abstract
Transport properties of high transition temperature (high-T(c)) superconductors apparently demonstrate two distinct relaxation rates in the normal state. We propose that this superficial inconsistence can be resolved with an effective carrier (quasiparticle) density n almost linear in temperature T. Experimental evidence both for and against this explanation is analyzed and we conclude that this offers a clear yet promising scenario. Band structure calculation was utilized to determine the Fermi surface topology of the cuprate superconductor versus doping. The results demonstrate that an electron-like portion of the Fermi surface exists in a wide range of doping levels even for a p-type superconductor, exemplified by La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4-δ) (LSCO). Such electron-like segments have also been confirmed in recent photoemission electron spectroscopy. The Coulomb interaction between electron-like and hole-like quasiparticles then forms a bound state, similar to that of an exciton. As a result the number of charge carriers upon cooling temperature is decreased. A quantum mechanical calculation of scattering cross section demonstrates that a T(2) relaxation rate is born out of an electron-hole collision process. Above the pseudogap temperature T(*) the normal state of high-T(c) cuprates is close to a two-component Fermi liquid. It, however, assumes non-Fermi-liquid behavior below T(*).

Abstract
We have studied the reflectance of the recently discovered superconductor LaO0.9F0.1FeAs in a wide energy range from the far infrared to the visible regime. We report on the observation of infrared active phonons, the plasma edge, and possible interband transitions. On the basis of this data and the reported in-plane penetration depth lambda{L}(0)=254 nm [H. Luetkens, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 097009 (2008)] a disorder sensitive relatively small value of the total electron-boson coupling constant lambda{tot}=lambda{e-ph}+lambda{e-sp} approximately 0.6+/-0.35 can be estimated adopting an effective single-band picture.

Abstract
We use ultrashort intense laser pulses to study superconducting state vaporization dynamics in La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.1 and 0.15) on the femtosecond time scale. We find that the energy density required to vaporize the superconducting state is 2.0+/-0.8 and 2.6+/-1.0 K/Cu for x=0.1 and 0.15, respectively. This is significantly greater than the condensation energy density, indicating that the quasiparticles share a large amount of energy with the boson glue bath on this time scale. Considering in detail both spin and lattice energy relaxation pathways which take place on the relevant time scale of approximately 10(-12) s, the experiments appear to favor phonon-mediated pair-breaking mechanisms over spin-mediated pair breaking.

Abstract
We report pressure-tuned Raman and x-ray diffraction data of Bi(1.98.)Sr(2.06)Y(0.68)Cu(2)O(8+delta) revealing a critical pressure at 21 GPa with anomalies in electronic Raman background, electron-phonon coupling lambda, spectral weight transfer, density dependent behavior of phonons and magnons, and a compressibility change in the c axis. For the first time in a cuprate, mobile charge carriers, lattice, and magnetism all show anomalies at a distinct critical pressure in the same experimental setting. Furthermore, the spectral changes suggest that the critical pressure at 21 GPa is related to the critical point at optimal doping.

Abstract
The charge dynamics in weakly hole doped high temperature superconductors is studied in terms of the accurate numerical solution to a model of a single hole interacting with a quantum lattice in an antiferromagnetic background, and accurate far-infrared ellipsometry measurements. The experimentally observed two electronic bands in the infrared spectrum can be identified in terms of the interplay between the electron correlation and electron-phonon interaction resolving the long standing mystery of the midinfrared band.

Abstract
Utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we report a previously unobserved mode in the excitation spectrum of La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2CuO4 at 500 meV. The mode is peaked around the (pi, 0) point in reciprocal space and is observed to soften, and broaden, away from this point. Samples with x=0, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.17 were studied. The new mode is found to be rapidly suppressed with increasing Sr content and is absent at x=0.17, where it is replaced by a continuum of excitations. This mode is only observed when the incident x-ray polarization is normal to the CuO planes.

Abstract
The dynamics of charge carriers close to the Mott transition is explored theoretically and experimentally in the quasi-two-dimensional organic charge-transfer salt, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_(2)Cu[N(CN)_(2)]Br_(x)Cl_(1-x), with varying Br content. The frequency dependence of the conductivity deviates significantly from simple Drude model behavior: there is a strong redistribution of spectral weight as the Mott transition is approached and with temperature. The effective mass of the quasiparticles increases considerably when coming close to the insulating phase. A dynamical mean-field-theory treatment of the relevant Hubbard model gives good quantitative description of experimental data.

Abstract
We construct the low-energy theory of a doped Mott insulator, such as the high-temperature superconductors, by explicitly integrating over the degrees of freedom far away from the chemical potential. For either hole or electron doping, a charge 2e bosonic field emerges at low energy. The charge 2e boson mediates dynamical spectral weight transfer across the Mott gap and creates a new charge e excitation by binding a hole. The result is a bifurcation of the electron dispersion below the chemical potential as observed recently in angle-resolved photoemission on Pb-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Pb2212).

Abstract
Temperature-dependent resistivities in the ab-plane and c-axis of Tl-based cuprates have been measured. Unlike the ab-plane properties, which are metallic, c-axis transport is semiconductor-like in the normal state for Tl(2)Ba(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(x) (Tl-2223) and Tl(2)Ba(2)CaCu(2)O(x) (Tl-2212). In contrast, for Tl(2)Ba(2)CuO(x) (Tl-2201), transport is metal-like in both the in-plane and the c-axis. For multi-layered cuprates, transport properties along the c-axis could be described by a tunnelling model, whereas for single-layered compound Tl-2201 it would be easier for the out-of-plane transport behaviour to be coherent since the there are no insulating Ca layers in its structure. Moreover, combining the studies on Bi-2201, which has an insulating behaviour for the out-of-plane resistivity, we suggest that the Tl-O layers in Tl-based superconductors could be conducting, unlike the weakly correlated Bi-O layers in Bi-based cuprates.

Abstract
Charge dynamics in a one-dimensional (1D) Mott insulator was investigated by fs pump-probe reflection spectroscopy on an organic charge-transfer compound, bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene-difluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (ET-F2TCNQ). The analyses of the transient reflectivity changes demonstrate that low-energy spectral weight induced by photocarrier doping is concentrated on a Drude component being independent of the doping density, and midgap state is never formed. Such phenomena can be explained by the concept of spin-charge separation characteristic of 1D correlated electron systems.

Abstract
The ab-plane optical properties of a cleaved single crystal of La2-xBaxCuO4 for x=1/8 (Tc approximately =2.4 K) have been measured over a wide frequency and temperature range. The low-frequency conductivity is Drude-like and shows a metallic response with decreasing temperature. However, below approximately =60 K, corresponding to the onset of charge-stripe order, there is a rapid loss of spectral weight below about 40 meV. The behavior is quite different from that typically associated with the pseudogap in the normal state of the cuprates. Instead, the gapping of the normal-state single-particle excitations looks surprisingly similar to that observed in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4, including the presence of a residual Drude peak with reduced weight.

Abstract
The dynamics of doped charge in an antiferromagnetic lattice is central to the description of the insulator-metal transition that occurs on doping the parent high T(c) compounds. In this work we use high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate the dynamics of the charge-transfer exciton by measuring its energy dispersion in two prototype compounds, La2CuO4 and La2NiO4. We show that this behavior is radically different in the cuprate with respect to a system known to exhibit strong polaronic behavior, namely, the nickelate: the exciton is mobile in the cuprate while it is well localized in the nickelate. Using a simple Wannier-Mott model we can estimate the total hole plus electron effective mass in the cuprate to be 3.5 +/- 0.3 m(e) which would exclude strong localization in the undoped cuprate.

Abstract
We present a three-band Hubbard Hamiltonian and the associated Cu Kappa-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra for electron- and hole-doped cuprates over a wide range of energy and momentum transfers. By comparing computed spectra for the unfilled case with the corresponding results for 15% electron or hole doping at two different values of the effective Hubbard parameter , generic signatures of the collapse of the magnetic gap and the characteristic momentum dependencies and evolution of the spectra with doping are identified. Available RIXS data support the gap collapse scenario for electron-doped cuprates, but the situation in hole-doped systems is found to be less clear.

Abstract
X-ray absorption is the standard method to probe the unoccupied density of states at a given edge. Here we show that polarized resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in La2CuO4 at the Cu L edge is extremely sensitive to the environment of the Cu atom and the fine structure in the Cu 4p density of states. Combined ab initio and many-body cluster calculations, used for the first time in such a context, show remarkable agreement with experiment. In particular, we identify a nonlocal effect, namely, a transition to off-site Cu 3d states.

Abstract
We report a Cu -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge-transfer excitations in the 2-8 eV range in the structurally simple compound HgBa(2)CuO(4+delta) at optimal doping (T(c)=96.5 K). The spectra exhibit a significant dependence on the incident photon energy which we carefully utilize to resolve a multiplet of weakly dispersive (<0.5 eV) electron-hole excitations, including a mode at 2 eV. The observation of this 2 eV excitation suggests the existence of a remnant charge-transfer gap deep in the superconducting phase. Quite generally, our results, which include additional data for the Mott insulator La(2)CuO(4), demonstrate the importance of exploring the incident photon-energy dependence of the RIXS cross section.

Abstract
Hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of Cu core electronic states, with a probing depth of approximately 60 A, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature is present in La2CuO4 but is absent in Nd2CuO4. Hole and electron doping in La(2-x)SrxCuO4 (LSCO) and Nd(2-x)CexCuO4 (NCCO) result in new well-screened features which are missing in soft x-ray PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish screening from doped states as its origin, which is strongly suppressed within 15 A of the surface. Complemented with x-ray absorption spectroscopy, the small chemical-potential shift in core levels (approximately 0.2 eV) are shown to be consistent with modifications of valence and conduction band states spanning the band gap (approximately 1 eV) upon hole and electron doping in LSCO and NCCO.

Abstract
We compare calculations based on the dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model with the infrared spectral weight W(Omega,T) of La(2-x)SrxCuO4 and other cuprates. Without using fitting parameters we show that most of the anomalies found in W(Omega,T) with respect to normal metals, including the existence of two different energy scales for the doping and the T dependence of W(Omega,T), can be ascribed to strong correlation effects.

Abstract
We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-T(c) superconductor Nd1.85 Ce0.15 CuO4. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with q-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

Abstract
We have measured the charge dynamics in the vortex state of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) by femtosecond time-resolved reflectance, which we demonstrate to be a direct probe of low-energy quasiparticle states. Application of a c-axis magnetic field induces regions surrounding vortex cores that display pseudogap charge dynamics. We determine the characteristic width approximately 130 A in optimally doped material and we show that it increases with decreasing doping. These results confirm a new experimental method of probing the microscopic properties of vortices in the cuprates.

Abstract
In La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) the spectral weight W=integralOmega0sigma(ab)1(omega,T)domega [where sigma(ab)1(omega,T) is the ab-plane conductivity] obeys the same law W=W0-BOmegaT2 as in a conventional metal such as gold, for any Omega up to the plasma edge. However, in LSCO BOmega points toward correlation effects and, unlike in gold, is related to an energy scale tT<<t0 approximately W0. The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule is fulfilled in LSCO superconductors for Omega greater than or approximately equal to 2000 cm(-1).

Abstract
We show that doped Mott insulators such as the copper-oxide superconductors are asymptotically slaved in that the quasiparticle weight Z near half-filling depends critically on the existence of the high-energy scale set by the upper Hubbard band. In particular, near half-filling, the following dichotomy arises: Z not equal to 0 when the high-energy scale is integrated out but Z=0 in the thermodynamic limit when it is retained. Slavery to the high-energy scale arises from quantum interference between electronic excitations across the Mott gap. Broad spectral features seen in photoemission in the normal state of the cuprates are argued to arise from high-energy slavery.

Abstract
Although the Hall coefficient R(H) is an informative transport property of metals and semiconductors, its meaning in the cuprate superconductors has been ambiguous because of its unusual characteristics. Here we show that a systematic study of R(H) in La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals over a wide doping range establishes a qualitative understanding of its peculiar evolution, which turns out to reflect a two-component nature of the electronic structure caused by an unusual development of the Fermi surface recently uncovered by photoemission experiments.

Abstract
Predictions are made for the momentum- and carrier-dependent degradation of the Mott gap upon doping in high-T(c) cuprates as would be observed in Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The two-dimensional Hubbard model with second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms has been studied by numerical exact diagonalization. Special emphasis is placed on the particle-hole asymmetry of the Mott gap excitations. We argue that the Mott gap excitations observed by RIXS are significantly influenced by the interaction between charge carriers and antiferromagnetic correlations.

Abstract
Raman measurements in the 1.5-20 cm(-1) energy range were performed on single crystals of Sr14-xCaxCu24O41. A quasielastic scattering peak (QEP) which softens with cooling is observed only in the polarization parallel to the ladder direction for samples with x=0, 8, and 12. The QEP is a Raman fingerprint of pinned collective density wave excitations screened by uncondensed carriers in the ladder structures. Our results suggest that transport in metallic samples, which is similar to transport in underdoped high-T(c) cuprates, is driven by a collective electronic response.

Abstract
Using infrared spectroscopy, we show that spin self-organization in untwinned La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) crystals has profound consequences for the dynamical conductivity sigma(omega). The electronic response of CuO2 planes acquires significant anisotropy in the spin ordered state with enhancement of the conductivity along the direction of the diagonal spin stripes by up to a factor of 2. An examination of the anisotropic response indicates that the diagonal spin texture in weakly doped LSCO is also accompanied by the modulation of charge density. The electronic response of the charge stripes is found to be gapless consistent with the hypothesis of the metallic ground state. Our experiments directly show that the striped ordered systems reveal new degrees of freedom not present in ordinary one-dimensional conductors.

Abstract
We demonstrate the ultrafast photoinduced Mott transition from a charge transfer insulator to a metal in a halogen-bridged Ni-chain compound by pump-probe reflection spectroscopy. Upon the irradiation of a 130-femtosecond laser pulse, the spectral weight of the gap transition is transferred to the inner-gap region. When the photoexcitation density exceeds 0.1/Ni site, the Drude-like high-reflection band appears in the infrared region, signaling the formation of a metallic state. The photogeneration of the metallic state and the subsequent recovery to the original gapped state occur within a few picoseconds.

Abstract
Lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 in the so-called "insulating" spin-glass phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have observed that a "quasiparticle" (QP) peak crosses the Fermi level in the node direction of the d-wave superconducting gap, forming an "arc" of Fermi surface, which explains the metallic behavior at high temperatures of the lightly doped materials. The QP spectral weight of the arc smoothly increases with hole doping, which we attribute to the n approximately x behavior of the carrier number in the underdoped and lightly doped regions.

Abstract
We show that the strong-coupling physics inherent to the insulating Mott state in 2D leads to a jump in the chemical potential upon doping and the emergence of a pseudogap in the single-particle spectrum below a characteristic temperature. The pseudogap arises because any singly occupied site not immediately neighboring a hole experiences a maximum energy barrier for transport equal to t(2)/U, t the nearest-neighbor hopping integral and U the on-site repulsion. The resultant pseudogap cannot vanish before each lattice site, on average, has at least one hole as a near neighbor. The ubiquity of this effect in all doped Mott insulators suggests that the pseudogap in the cuprates has a simple origin.

Abstract
We report on an x-ray absorption and resonant photoemission study on single crystals of the high-T(c) cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta). Using an intrinsic energy reference, we find that the chemical potential of La2-xSrxCuO4 lies near the top of the La2CuO4 valence band whereas in Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta) it is situated near the bottom of the Nd2CuO4 conduction band. The data clearly establish that the introduction of Ce in Nd2CuO4 results in electrons being doped into the CuO2 planes. We infer that the states closest to the chemical potential have a Cu 3d(10) singlet origin in Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta) and a 3d(9)L singlet origin in La2-xSrxCuO4.

Abstract
We present results of the thermal conductivity of La2CuO4 and La(1.8)Eu(0.2)CuO4 single crystals which represent model systems for the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice. We find large anisotropies of the thermal conductivity which are explained in terms of two-dimensional heat conduction by magnons within the CuO2 planes. Nonmagnetic Zn substituted for Cu gradually suppresses this magnon thermal conductivity kappa(mag). A semiclassical analysis of kappa(mag) is shown to yield a magnon mean free path which scales linearly with the reciprocal concentration of Zn ions.

Abstract
There is still no universally accepted theory of high-temperature superconductivity. Most models assume that doping creates 'holes' in the valence band of an insulating, antiferromagnetic 'parent' compound, and that antiferromagnetism and high-temperature superconductivity are intimately related. If their respective energies are nearly equal, strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations (temporally and spatially restricted antiferromagnetic domains) would be expected in the superconductive phase, and superconducting fluctuations would be expected in the antiferromagnetic phase; the two states should 'mix' over an extended length scale. Here we report that one-unit-cell-thick antiferromagnetic La2CuO4 barrier layers remain highly insulating and completely block a supercurrent; the characteristic decay length is 1 A, indicating that the two phases do not mix. We likewise found that isolated one-unit-cell-thick layers of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 remain superconducting. The latter further implies that, on doping, new electronic states are created near the middle of the bandgap. These two findings are in conflict with most proposed models, with a few notable exceptions that include postulated spin-charge separation.

Abstract
The spectacular changes of the A(1g)-polarized Raman spectra of trilayer and four-layer high-T(c) cuprate superconductors below T(c) observed in recent experiments can be explained in terms of a new type of excitation that occurs in these systems, a Raman active c-axis plasmon. Its frequency, intensity, resonance properties, polarization properties, and coupling to phonon modes involving vibrations of the planar oxygens are estimated and shown to agree with those of the observed A(1g) superconductivity-induced electronic peak.

Abstract
We study the dynamics of metallic vertical stripes in cuprates within the three-band Hubbard model based on a recently developed time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. As doping increases, the optical conductivity shows transfer of spectral weight from the charge-transfer band towards (i) an incoherent band centered at 1.3 eV, (ii) a Drude peak, due mainly to motion along the stripe, and (iii) a low-energy collective mode which softens with doping and merges with (ii) at optimum doping in good agreement with experiment. The softening is related to the quasidegeneracy between Cu-centered and O-centered mean-field stripe solutions close to optimal doping.

Abstract
We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the dispersion relations of charge-transfer excitations in insulating La(2)CuO(4).. These data reveal two peaks, both of which show two-dimensional characteristics. The lowest energy excitation has a gap energy of approximately 2.2 eV at the zone enter, and a dispersion of approximately 1 eV. The spectral weight of this mode becomes dramatically smaller around (pi, pi). The second peak shows a smaller dispersion ( approximately 0.5 eV) with a zone-center energy of approximately 3.9 eV. We argue that these are both highly dispersive exciton modes damped by the presence of the electron-hole continuum.

Abstract
Using infrared spectroscopy, we found that changes in the in-plane charge dynamics attributable to static stripe order in La(1.275)Nd(0.6)Sr(0.125)CuO(4) or superconductivity in La(1.875)Sr(0.125)CuO(4) are confined to energies smaller than 100 cm(-1). An absorption peak in the low- omega conductivity of the Nd-doped compound is suggestive of localization effects due to the reduced dimensionality of static charge stripes. Neither superconductivity nor static stripe ordering has a noticeable effect on the depression of the scattering rate at omega<1000 cm(-1) characteristic of the pseudogap state in other classes of moderately doped cuprates.

Abstract
Low energy polarized electronic Raman scattering of the electron-doped superconductor Nd2-x Ce x CuO4 ( x = 0.15, T(c) = 22 K) has revealed a nonmonotonic d(x(2)-y(2)) superconducting order parameter. It has a maximum gap of 4.4k(B)T(c) at Fermi surface intersections with an antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone (the "hot spots") and a smaller gap of 3.3k(B)T(c) at fermionic Brillouin zone boundaries. The gap enhancement in the vicinity of the hot spots emphasizes the role of antiferromagnetic fluctuations and the similarity in the origin of superconductivity for electron- and hole-doped cuprates.

Abstract
The Hubbard on-site repulsion U between opposite spin electrons on the same atomic orbital is widely regarded to be the most important source of electronic correlation in solids. Here we extend the Hubbard model to account for the fact that the experimentally measured atomic U is different from the one obtained by calculation of the atomic Coulomb integral. The resulting model describes quasiparticles that become increasingly dressed as the number of electrons in the band increases. Superconductivity can result in this model through quasiparticle undressing. Various signatures of this physics in spectroscopies in the normal and superconducting states are discussed. A novel effect in the normal state is predicted to be electroluminescence at the sample-positive counterelectrode boundary.

Abstract
We study the order parameter phase fluctuation effects in cuprate superconductors near T = 0, using a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave BCS model. An effective phason theory is obtained which is used to estimate the strength of the fluctuations, the fluctuation correction to the in-plane penetration depth, and the pair-field susceptibility. We find that, while the phase fluctuation effects are difficult to observe in the renormalization of the superfluid phase stiffness, they may be observed in a pair tunneling experiment which measures the pair-field susceptibility.

Abstract
The optical spectra of PrBa2Cu4O8 show large in-plane anisotropy. For the a polarization (E perpendicular chain), the spectrum is characterized by a gap of 1.4 eV, indicating the charge-transfer insulating nature of the CuO2 planes. For the metallic chain direction (E // b), the spectrum deviates from a simple Drude response; reflectivity R(b)(omega) shows a sharp edge at approximately 1 eV but it also shows a dip at approximately 15 meV, which splits the conductivity spectrum into two parts--a zero-energy mode with small weight and a pronounced 40 meV mode. These features are discussed in terms of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in a doped 1D Mott insulator and compared with 1D Bechgaard salts.
