Abstract
Over the last decade, a significant amount of work has been devoted to point defect behaviour in UO2 using approximations beyond density functional theory (DFT), in particular DFT + U and hybrid functionals for correlated electrons. We review the results of these studies from calculations of bulk UO2 properties to the more recent determination of activation energies for self-diffusion in UO2, as well as a comparison with their experimental counterparts. We also discuss the efficiency of the three known methods developed to circumvent the presence of metastable states, namely occupation matrix control, U-ramping and quasi-annealing.

Abstract
The accuracy of excited states calculated with Kohn-Sham density functional theory using the maximum overlap method has been assessed for the calculation of adiabatic excitation energies, excited state structures, and excited state harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies for open-shell singlet excited states. The computed Kohn-Sham adiabatic excitation energies are improved significantly by post self-consistent field spin-purification, but remain too low compared with experiment with a larger error than time-dependent density functional theory. Excited state structures and vibrational frequencies are also improved by spin-purification. The structures show a comparable accuracy to time-dependent density functional theory, while the harmonic vibrational frequencies are found to be more accurate for the majority of vibrational modes. The computed harmonic vibrational frequencies are also further improved by perturbative anharmonic corrections, suggesting a good description of the potential energy surface. Overall, excited state Kohn-Sham density functional theory is shown to provide an efficient method for the calculation of excited state structures and vibrational frequencies in open-shell singlet systems and provides a promising technique that can be applied to study large systems.

Abstract
It is highly desirable for numerical approximations to stationary points for a potential energy landscape to lie in the corresponding quadratic convergence basin. However, it is possible that an approximation may lie only in the linear convergence basin, or even in a chaotic region, and hence not converge to the actual stationary point when further optimization is attempted. Proving that a numerical approximation will quadratically converge to the associated stationary point is termed certification. Here, we apply Smale's α-theory to stationary points, providing a certification serving as a mathematical proof that the numerical approximation does indeed correspond to an actual stationary point, independent of the precision employed. As a practical example, employing recently developed certification algorithms, we show how the α-theory can be used to certify all the known minima and transition states of Lennard-Jones LJ(N) atomic clusters for N = 7, ..., 14.

Abstract
The isostructural α-γ phase transition in cerium is analyzed using density-functional theory with different exchange-correlation functionals, in particular the PBE0 hybrid functional and the exact-exchange plus correlation in the random-phase approximation [(EX+cRPA)@PBE0] approach. We show that the Hartree-Fock exchange part of the hybrid functional gives rise to two distinct solutions at zero temperature that can be associated with the α and γ phases of cerium. However, despite the relatively good structural and magnetic properties, PBE0 predicts the γ phase to be the stable phase at ambient pressure and zero temperature, in contradiction with low temperature experiments. EX+cRPA reverses the energetic ordering, which emphasizes the importance of correlation for rare-earth systems.

Abstract
We present a generalization to our previously developed quantum wavepacket ab initio molecular dynamics (QWAIMD) method by using multiple diabatic electronic reduced single particle density matrices, propagated within an extended Lagrangian paradigm. The Slater determinantal wavefunctions associated with the density matrices utilized may be orthogonal or nonorthogonal with respect to each other. This generalization directly results from an analysis of the variance in electronic structure with quantum nuclear degrees of freedom. The diabatic electronic states are treated here as classical parametric variables and propagated simultaneously along with the quantum wavepacket and classical nuclei. Each electronic density matrix is constrained to be N-representable. Consequently two sets of new methods are derived: extended Lagrangian-QWAIMD (xLag-QWAIMD) and diabatic extended Lagrangian-QWAIMD (DxLag-QWAIMD). In both cases, the instantaneous potential energy surface for the quantum nuclear degrees of freedom is constructed from the diabatic states using an on-the-fly nonorthogonal multireference formalism. By introducing generalized grid-based electronic basis functions, we eliminate the basis set dependence on the quantum nucleus. Subsequent reuse of the two-electron integrals during the on-the-fly potential energy surface computation stage yields a substantial reduction in computational costs. Specifically, both xLag-QWAIMD and DxLag-QWAIMD turn out to be about two orders of magnitude faster than our previously developed time-dependent deterministic sampling implementation of QWAIMD. Energy conservation properties, accuracy of the associated potential surfaces, and vibrational properties are analyzed for a family of hydrogen bonded systems.

Abstract
Eigenvalue-type equations for Löwdin-Amos-Hall spin-paired (corresponding) orbitals are developed to provide an alternative to the standard spin-polarized Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham equations in dealing with broken-symmetry (BS) states. To derive paired orbitals for different spins (PODS) equations there has been applied Adams-Gilbert "localizing" operator approach. The PODS equations contain different operators for different spins the eigenvectors of which are paired orbitals associated with the same eigenvalue for each pair. Preliminary applications to simple systems show viability of this approach. Although the spectrum of possible applications of the PODS equations seems to be quite wide, they would be especially useful for obtaining and analyzing the S(z) = 0 BS solutions for the systems with antiferromagnetic structure.
