Probing the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Catalytic Janus Particles with Single-Particle Tracking and Differential Dynamic Microscopy

Long-time position distribution of an active Brownian particle in two dimensions

We study the late-time dynamics of a single active Brownian particle in two dimensions with speed v_{0} and rotation diffusion constant D_{R}. We show that at late times t≫D_{R}^{-1}, while the position probability distribution P(x,y,t) in the x-y plane approaches a Gaussian form near its peak describing the typical diffusive fluctuations, it has non-Gaussian tails describing atypical rare fluctuations when sqrt[x^{2}+y^{2}]∼v_{0}t. In this regime, the distribution admits a large deviation form, P(x,y,t)∼exp{-tD_{R}Φ[sqrt[x^{2}+y^{2}]/(v_{0}t)]}, where we compute the rate function Φ(z) analytically and also numerically using an importance sampling method. We show that the rate function Φ(z), encoding the rare fluctuations, still carries the trace of activity even at late times. Another way of detecting activity at late times is to subject the active particle to an external harmonic potential. In this case we show that the stationary distribution P_{stat}(x,y) depends explicitly on the activity parameter D_{R}^{-1} and undergoes a crossover, as D_{R} increases, from a ring shape in the strongly active limit (D_{R}→0) to a Gaussian shape in the strongly passive limit (D_{R}→∞).

Motility-Induced Temperature Difference in Coexisting Phases

Unlike in thermodynamic equilibrium where coexisting phases always have the same temperature, here we show that systems comprising "active" self-propelled particles can self-organize into two coexisting phases at different kinetic temperatures, which are separated from each other by a sharp and persistent temperature gradient. Contrasting previous studies that have focused on overdamped descriptions of active particles, we show that a "hot-cold coexistence" occurs if and only if accounting for inertia, which is significant, e.g., in activated dusty plasmas, microflyers, whirling fruits, or beetles at interfaces. Our results exemplify a route to use active particles to create a self-sustained temperature gradient across coexisting phases. This phenomenon is fundamentally beyond equilibrium physics and is accompanied by a slow coarsening law with an exponent significantly smaller than the universal 1/3 exponent seen in both equilibrium systems and overdamped active Brownian particles.

Zermelo's problem: Optimal point-to-point navigation in 2D turbulent flows using reinforcement learning

To find the path that minimizes the time to navigate between two given points in a fluid flow is known as Zermelo's problem. Here, we investigate it by using a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach for the case of a vessel that has a slip velocity with fixed intensity, V_s, but variable direction and navigating in a 2D turbulent sea. We show that an Actor-Critic RL algorithm is able to find quasioptimal solutions for both time-independent and chaotically evolving flow configurations. For the frozen case, we also compared the results with strategies obtained analytically from continuous Optimal Navigation (ON) protocols. We show that for our application, ON solutions are unstable for the typical duration of the navigation process and are, therefore, not useful in practice. On the other hand, RL solutions are much more robust with respect to small changes in the initial conditions and to external noise, even when V_s is much smaller than the maximum flow velocity. Furthermore, we show how the RL approach is able to take advantage of the flow properties in order to reach the target, especially when the steering speed is small.

Frequency-dependent higher-order Stokes singularities near a planar elastic boundary: Implications for the hydrodynamics of an active microswimmer near an elastic interface

The emerging field of self-driven active particles in fluid environments has recently created significant interest in the biophysics and bioengineering communities owing to their promising future for biomedical and technological applications. These microswimmers move autonomously through aqueous media, where under realistic situations they encounter a plethora of external stimuli and confining surfaces with peculiar elastic properties. Based on a far-field hydrodynamic model, we present an analytical theory to describe the physical interaction and hydrodynamic couplings between a self-propelled active microswimmer and an elastic interface that features resistance toward shear and bending. We model the active agent as a superposition of higher-order Stokes singularities and elucidate the associated translational and rotational velocities induced by the nearby elastic boundary. Our results show that the velocities can be decomposed in shear and bending related contributions which approach the velocities of active agents close to a no-slip rigid wall in the steady limit. The transient dynamics predict that contributions to the velocities of the microswimmer due to bending resistance are generally more pronounced than those due to shear resistance. Bending can enhance (suppress) the velocities resulting from higher-order singularities whereas the shear related contribution decreases (increases) the velocities. Most prominently, we find that near an elastic interface of only energetic resistance toward shear deformation, such as that of an elastic capsule designed for drug delivery, a swimming bacterium undergoes rotation of the same sense as observed near a no-slip wall. In contrast to that, near an interface of only energetic resistance toward bending, such as that of a fluid vesicle or liposome, we find a reversed sense of rotation. Our results provide insight into the control and guidance of artificial and synthetic self-propelling active microswimmers near elastic confinements.

Tracking the rotation of single CdS nanorods during photocatalysis with surface plasmon resonance microscopy

Rotational dynamics of anisotropic nanomaterials reveals and regulates their behaviors and functions in diverse fields ranging from nanomotors, biomechanics, and enzymatic catalysis to microrheology. An optical imaging technique that is suitable for all kinds of anisotropic nanoobjects, regardless of its inherent optical property, is thus highly desirable and it is yet to be demonstrated. In the present work, by taking a nonfluorescent and nonplasmonic CdS nanorod as an example, we demonstrate the capability of a recently developed surface plasmon resonance microscopy for determining the orientation of single anisotropic nanomaterials with arbitrary chemical composition and morphology.

While rotational dynamics of anisotropic nanoobjects has often been limited in plasmonic and fluorescent nanomaterials, here we demonstrate the capability of a surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) to determine the orientation of all kinds of anisotropic nanomaterials. By taking CdS nanorods as an example, it was found that two-dimensional Fourier transform of the asymmetrical wave-like SPRM image resulted in a peak in its angular spectrum in k space. Consistency between the peak angle and the geometrical orientation of the nanorod was validated by both in situ scanning electron microscope characterizations and theoretical calculations. Real-time monitoring of the rotational dynamics of single CdS nanorods further revealed the accelerated rotation under appropriate reaction conditions for photocatalyzed hydrogen generation. The driving force was attributed to the asymmetric production of hydrogen molecules as a result of inhomogeneous distribution of reactive sites within the nanorod. The present work not only builds the experimental and theoretical connections between the orientation of anisotropic nanomaterials and its SPRM images; the general suitability of SPRM also sheds light on broad types of nonfluorescent and nonplasmonic anisotropic nanoobjects from semiconductors to bacteria and viruses.

Elastic behavior of a semiflexible polymer in 3D subject to compression and stretching forces

We elucidate the elastic behavior of a wormlike chain in 3D under compression and provide exact solutions for the experimentally accessible force-extension relation in terms of generalized spheroidal wave functions. In striking contrast to the classical Euler buckling instability, the force-extension relation of a clamped semiflexible polymer exhibits a smooth crossover from an almost stretched to a buckled configuration. In particular, the associated susceptibility, which measures the strength of the response of the polymer to the applied force, displays a prominent peak in the vicinity of the critical Euler buckling force. For increasing persistence length, the force-extension relation and the susceptibility of semiflexible polymers approach the behavior of a classical rod, whereas thermal fluctuations permit more flexible polymers to resist the applied force. Furthermore, we find that semiflexible polymers confined to 2D can oppose the applied force more strongly than in 3D.
