Scattering theory of thermal and excess noise in open conductors

Chaotic dot-superconductor analog of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect

As an electrical analog of the optical Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect, we study current cross correlations in a chaotic quantum dot-superconductor junction. One superconducting and two normal reservoirs are connected via point contacts to a chaotic quantum dot. For a wide range of contact widths and transparencies, we find large positive current correlations. The positive correlations are generally enhanced by normal backscattering in the contacts. Moreover, for normal backscattering in the contacts, the positive correlations survive when suppressing the proximity effect in the dot with a weak magnetic field.

Full counting statistics of a superconducting beam splitter

We study the statistics of charge transport in a mesoscopic three-terminal device with one superconducting terminal and two normal-metal terminals. We calculate the full distribution of transmitted charges into the two symmetrically biased normal terminals. In a wide parameter range, we find large positive cross correlations between the currents in the two normal arms. We also determine the third cumulant that provides additional information on the statistics not contained in the current noise.

Partition noise and statistics in the fractional quantum hall effect

A microscopic theory of current partition in fractional quantum Hall liquids, described by chiral Luttinger liquids, is developed to compute the noise correlations, using the Keldysh technique. In this Hanbury-Brown and Twiss geometry, at Laughlin filling factors nu = 1/3, the real time noise correlator exhibits oscillations which persist over larger time scales than that of an uncorrelated Hall fluid. The zero frequency noise correlations are negative at filling factor 1/3 as for bare electrons (antibunching), but are strongly reduced in amplitude. These correlations become positive (bunching) for nu < or = 1/5, suggesting a tendency towards bosonic behavior.

Shot noise by quantum scattering in chaotic cavities

We have experimentally studied shot noise of chaotic cavities defined by two quantum point contacts in series. The cavity noise is determined as (1/4)2e/I/ in agreement with theory and can be well distinguished from other contributions to noise generated at the contacts. Subsequently, we have found that cavity noise decreases if one of the contacts is further opened and reaches nearly zero for a highly asymmetric cavity. Heating inside the cavity due to electron-electron interaction can slightly enhance the noise of large cavities and is also discussed quantitatively.

Counting statistics of photons produced by electronic shot noise

A theory is presented for the photodetection statistics of radiation produced by current fluctuations in a phase-coherent conductor. Deviations are found from the Poisson statistics that would result from a classical current. For detection in a narrow frequency interval delta omega, the photocount distribution has the negative-binomial form of blackbody radiation if e delta omega is less than the mean current I in the conductor. When electronic localization sets in, I drops below e delta omega and a different type of super-Poissonian photon statistics results.

Nonlinear voltage dependence of the shot noise in mesoscopic degenerate conductors with strong electron-electron scattering

It is shown that measurements of zero-frequency shot noise can provide information on electron-electron interaction, because the strong interaction results in the nonlinear voltage dependence of the shot noise in metallic wires. This is due to the fact that the Wiedemann-Franz law is no longer valid in the case of considerable electron-electron interaction. The deviations from this law increase the noise power and make it strongly dependent on the ratio of electron-electron and electron-impurity scattering rates.

Coulomb-induced positive current-current correlations in normal conductors

In the white-noise limit current correlations measured at different contacts of a mesoscopic conductor are negative due to the antisymmetry of the wave function (Pauli principle). We show that current fluctuations at capacitive contacts induced via the long range Coulomb interaction due to charge fluctuations in the mesoscopic sample can be positively correlated. The positive correlations are a consequence of the extension of the wave functions into areas near both contacts. As an example we investigate in detail a quantum point contact in a high magnetic field under conditions in which transport is along an edge state.

A metallic split gate serves as a tunable beam splitter to partition the incident beam into transmitted and reflected partial beams. In the nonequilibrium case the fluctuations in the partial beams are shown to be fully anticorrelated, demonstrating that fermions exclude each other. In equilibrium, the cross-correlation of current fluctuations at two different contacts is also found to be negative and nonzero, provided that a direct transmission exists between the contacts.

Hanbury brown and twiss-type experiment with electrons

Fermion anti-bunching was directly observed by measuring the cross-covariance of the current fluctuations of partitioned electrons. A quantum point contact was used to inject single-mode electrons into a mesoscopic electron beam splitter device. The beam splitter output currents showed negative cross-covariance, indicating that the electrons arrived individually at the beam splitter and were randomly partitioned into two output channels. As the relative time delay between the outputs was changed, the observed ringing in the cross-covariance was consistent with the bandwidths used to monitor the fluctuations. The result demonstrates a fermion complement to the Hanbury Brown and Twiss experiment for photons.
