Microscopic origin of magnetic anisotropy in Au/Co/Au probed with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Observation of the x-ray magneto-optical Voigt effect

The existence of the x-ray magneto-optical Voigt effect is demonstrated. By means of polarization analysis the Voigt rotation and ellipticity of linearly polarized synchrotron radiation are measured at the Co L3 edge upon transmission through an amorphous Co film. The observed x-ray Voigt rotation is about 7.5 degrees /microm. On the basis of ab initio calculations it is shown that the x-ray Voigt effect follows sensitively the amount of spin polarization of the 2p core states. Therefore it provides a unique measure of the spin splitting of the core states.

Chiral symmetry breaking in magnetic thin films and multilayers

A phenomenological theory of chiral symmetry breaking in magnetic nanostructures is developed considering induced, inhomogeneous chiral interactions (Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya-type). Application of the theory to films and multilayers with in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization predicts modulated and two-dimensional localized patterns (vortices). These new classes of magnetic patterns are intrinsically stable and localized on nanometer scale. Various experimental observations agree qualitatively with structures derived from this theory.

Modified magnetism at a buried Co/Pd interface resolved with X-ray standing waves

Soft x-ray standing waves produced by a multilayer interference substrate add depth sensitivity to magnetic circular dichroism to resolve changes in Co magnetism across a 1 nm distance from the Co center to the Co-on-Pd interface of a Pd/Co/Pd trilayer with an in-plane magnetization. Large enhancements of the number of Co d holes, and of in-plane orbital and spin magnetic moments, are strongly localized at a thin, chemically modified interface layer. These results provide new insight into magnetic anisotropy at interfaces, and suggest a broad applicability of such standing wave measurements to interface magnetism studies.

Orbital magnetic moment instability at the spin reorientation transition of Nd2Fe14B

Highly accurate soft-XMCD data recorded on a Nd2Fe14B single crystal, through the spin reorientation transition show that the average Fe orbital moment (a) is proportional to the macroscopic Fe anisotropy constant, and (b) diverges 15 K below the reorientation transition temperature. This divergence is indicative of a critical behavior and it is related to a tetragonal distortion. These results give experimental evidence of the mutual dependence between orbital moment, macroscopic magnetic anisotropy, and tetragonal distortion. Furthermore, it is argued that the critical behavior of the orbital moment is at the origin of similar divergences previously observed in Mossbauer and Hall-effect data.
