Two-dimensional transforms for device color correction and calibration

Color device calibration is traditionally performed using one-dimensional (1-D) per-channel tone-response corrections (TRCs). While 1-D TRCs are attractive in view of their low implementation complexity and efficient real-time processing of color images, their use severely restricts the degree of control that can be exercised along various device axes. A typical example is that per separation (or per-channel), TRCs in a printer can be used to either ensure gray balance along the C = M = Y axis or to provide a linear response in delta-E units along each of the individual (C, M, and Y) axis, but not both. This paper proposes a novel two-dimensional color correction architecture that enables much greater control over the device color gamut with a modest increase in implementation cost. Results show significant improvement in calibration accuracy and stability when compared to traditional 1-D calibration. Superior cost quality tradeoffs (over 1-D methods) are also achieved for emulation of one color device on another.

Transferring color between three-dimensional objects

A framework for transferring image-based color between three-dimensional objects by the use of a dichromatic reflection model is proposed. The framework addresses the following issues: (1) accurate recovery of an implicit geometric coefficient, (2) calculation of body color, (3) color transfer between different illuminants, and (4) segmentation of multicolored regions. The experimental results show that high color accuracy and photorealistic effects of the synthesized images can be achieved. The proposed technique has wide applications in image-based design and visualization of three-dimensional objects.

Development of a nanoparticle-labeled microfluidic immunoassay for detection of pathogenic microorganisms

The light-scattering properties of submicroscopic metal particles ranging from 40 to 120 nm in diameter have recently been investigated. These particles scatter incident white light to generate monochromatic light, which can be seen either by the naked eye or by dark-field microscopy. The nanoparticles are well suited for detection in microchannel-based immunoassays. The goal of the present study was to detect Helicobacter pylori- and Escherichia coli O157:H7-specific antigens with biotinylated polyclonal antibodies. Gold particles (diameter, 80 nm) functionalized with a secondary antibiotin antibody were then used as the readout. A dark-field stereomicroscope was used for particle visualization in poly(dimethylsiloxane) microchannels. A colorimetric quantification scheme was developed for the detection of the visual color changes resulting from immune reactions in the microchannels. The microchannel immunoassays reliably detected H. pylori and E. coli O157:H7 antigens in quantities on the order of 10 ng, which provides a sensitivity of detection comparable to those of conventional dot blot assays. In addition, the nanoparticles within the microchannels can be stored for at least 8 months without a loss of signal intensity. This strategy provides a means for the detection of nanoparticles in microchannels without the use of sophisticated equipment. In addition, the approach has the potential for use for further miniaturization of immunoassays and can be used for long-term archiving of immunoassays.

Adaptive homogeneity-directed demosaicing algorithm

A cost-effective digital camera uses a single-image sensor, applying alternating patterns of red, green, and blue color filters to each pixel location. A way to reconstruct a full three-color representation of color images by estimating the missing pixel components in each color plane is called a demosaicing algorithm. This paper presents three inherent problems often associated with demosaicing algorithms that incorporate two-dimensional (2-D) directional interpolation: misguidance color artifacts, interpolation color artifacts, and aliasing. The level of misguidance color artifacts present in two images can be compared using metric neighborhood modeling. The proposed demosaicing algorithm estimates missing pixels by interpolating in the direction with fewer color artifacts. The aliasing problem is addressed by applying filterbank techniques to 2-D directional interpolation. The interpolation artifacts are reduced using a nonlinear iterative procedure. Experimental results using digital images confirm the effectiveness of this approach.

New Adaptive Color Quantization Method Based on Self-Organizing Maps

Color quantization (CQ) is an image processing task popularly used to convert true color images to palletized images for limited color display devices. To minimize the contouring artifacts introduced by the reduction of colors, a new competitive learning (CL) based scheme called the frequency sensitive self-organizing maps (FS-SOMs) is proposed to optimize the color palette design for CQ. FS-SOM harmonically blends the neighborhood adaptation of the well-known self-organizing maps (SOMs) with the neuron dependent frequency sensitive learning model, the global butterfly permutation sequence for input randomization, and the reinitialization of dead neurons to harness effective utilization of neurons. The net effect is an improvement in adaptation, a well-ordered color palette, and the alleviation of underutilization problem, which is the main cause of visually perceivable artifacts of CQ. Extensive simulations have been performed to analyze and compare the learning behavior and performance of FS-SOM against other vector quantization (VQ) algorithms. The results show that the proposed FS-SOM outperforms classical CL, Linde, Buzo, and Gray (LBG), and SOM algorithms. More importantly, FS-SOM achieves its superiority in reconstruction quality and topological ordering with a much greater robustness against variations in network parameters than the current art SOM algorithm for CQ. A most significant bit (MSB) biased encoding scheme is also introduced to reduce the number of parallel processing units. By mapping the pixel values as sign-magnitude numbers and biasing the magnitudes according to their sign bits, eight lattice points in the color space are condensed into one common point density function. Consequently, the same processing element can be used to map several color clusters and the entire FS-SOM network can be substantially scaled down without severely scarifying the quality of the displayed image. The drawback of this encoding scheme is the additional storage overhead, which can be cut down by leveraging on existing encoder in an overall lossy compression scheme.

Spectral characterization of a color scanner by adaptive estimation

A new method of spectral characterization for color scanners by the use of adaptive estimation is proposed. It deals with estimation of high-dimensional reflectance vectors from low-dimensional scanner response vectors when the scanner departs from linearity. We first investigate the spectral linearity of the scanner, and then estimate the spectral reflectance adaptively based on the local statistics of a set of neighboring training samples. As the proposed characterization method does not utilize the mathematically recovered spectral responsivity, its inherent inaccuracy is not critical to the spectral characterization. Experimental results showed significant advantage of adaptive estimation when compared with other methods.

Color image indexing using BTC

This paper presents a new application of a well-studied image coding technique, namely block truncation coding (BTC). It is shown that BTC can not only be used for compressing color images, it can also be conveniently used for content-based image retrieval from image databases. From the BTC compressed stream (without performing decoding), we derive two image content description features, one termed the block color co-occurrence matrix (BCCM) and the other block pattern histogram (BPH). We use BCCM and BPH to compute the similarity measures of images for content-based image retrieval applications. Experimental results are presented which demonstrate that BCCM and BPH are comparable to similar state of the art techniques.

Impact of HVS models on model-based halftoning

A model for the human visual system (HVS) is an important component of many halftoning algorithms. Using the iterative direct binary search (DBS) algorithm, we compare the halftone texture quality provided by four different HVS models that have been reported in the literature. Choosing one HVS model as the best for DBS, we then develop an approximation to that model which significantly improves computational performance while minimally increasing the complexity of the code. By varying the parameters of this model, we find that it is possible to tune it to the gray level being rendered, and to thus yield superior halftone quality across the tone scale. We then develop a dual-metric DBS algorithm that effectively provides a tone-dependent HVS model without a large increase in computational complexity.

Binarization of color document images via luminance and saturation color features

This paper presents a novel binarization algorithm for color document images. Conventional thresholding methods do not produce satisfactory binarization results for documents with close or mixed foreground colors and background colors. Initially, statistical image features are extracted from the luminance distribution. Then, a decision-tree based binarization method is proposed, which selects various color features to binarize color document images. First, if the document image colors are concentrated within a limited range, saturation is employed. Second, if the image foreground colors are significant, luminance is adopted. Third, if the image background colors are concentrated within a limited range, luminance is also applied. Fourth, if the total number of pixels with low luminance (less than 60) is limited, saturation is applied; else both luminance and saturation are employed. Our experiments include 519 color images, most of which are uniform invoice and name-card document images. The proposed binarization method generates better results than other available methods in shape and connected-component measurements. Also, the binarization method obtains higher recognition accuracy in a commercial OCR system than other comparable methods.

Color quantization and processing by Fibonacci lattices

Color quantization is sampling of three-dimensional (3-D) color spaces (such as RGB or Lab) which results in a discrete subset of colors known as a color codebook or palette. It is extensively used for display, transfer, and storage of natural images in Internet-based applications, computer graphics, and animation. We propose a sampling scheme which provides a uniform quantization of the Lab space. The idea is based on several results from number theory and phyllotaxy. The sampling algorithm is very much systematic and allows easy design of universal (image-independent) color codebooks for a given set of parameters. The codebook structure allows fast quantization and ordered dither of color images. The display quality of images quantized by the proposed color codebooks is comparable with that of image-dependent quantizers. Most importantly, the quantized images are more amenable to the type of processing used for grayscale ones. Methods for processing grayscale images cannot be simply extended to color images because they rely on the fact that each gray-level is described by a single number and the fact that a relation of full order can be easily established on the set of those numbers. Color spaces (such as RGB or Lab) are, on the other hand, 3-D. The proposed color quantization, i.e., color space sampling and numbering of sampled points, makes methods for processing grayscale images extendible to color images. We illustrate possible processing of color images by first introducing the basic average and difference operations and then implementing edge detection and compression of color quantized images.

A spectral-discrimination method for tear-film lipid-layer thickness estimation from fringe pattern images

Examination of the tear-film lipid layer is often helpful in the prognosis of prospective contact lens patients and contact lens related problems, and in the analysis of symptomatic noncontact lens-wearing patients. In particular, the thickness of the lipid layer is considered to be an informative cue in studying the tear-film stability and uncovering of certain disorders. We propose a method for the accurate estimation of the lipid-layer thickness, exploiting the intensity and color information in Fizeau fringe images. The technique is based on a quantitative measure for discriminating among the spectra associated with different thicknesses. We propose an optical system for imaging the interference patterns, develop a mathematical model based on the physics of the fringe formation and sensing, and describe the calibration of the optical system using this model. The thickness extraction is readily carried out utilizing a lookup table. The proposed method would enable objective evaluation of the lipid layer characteristics, and provide a means for examining the dynamic changes in its thickness and spatial distribution during inter-blink periods.

On spatial quantization of color images

Image quantization and digital halftoning, two fundamental image processing problems, are generally performed sequentially and, in most cases, independent of each other. Color reduction with a pixel-wise defined distortion measure and the halftoning process with its local averaging neighborhood typically optimize different quality criteria or, frequently, follow a heuristic approach without reference to any quantitative quality measure. In this paper, we propose a new model to simultaneously quantize and halftone color images. The method is based on a rigorous cost-function approach which optimizes a quality criterion derived from a simplified model of human perception. It incorporates spatial and contextual information into the quantization and thus overcomes the artificial separation of quantization and halftoning. Optimization is performed by an efficient multiscale procedure which substantially alleviates the computational burden. The quality criterion and the optimization algorithms are evaluated on a representative set of artificial and real-world images showing a significant image quality improvement compared to standard color reduction approaches. Applying the developed cost function, we also suggest a new distortion measure for evaluating the overall quality of color reduction schemes.

End-to-end color printer calibration by total least squares regression

Neugebauer modeling plays an important role in obtaining end-to-end device characterization profiles for halftone color printer calibration. This paper proposes total least square (TLS) regression methods to estimate the parameters of various Neugebauer models. Compared to the traditional least squares (LS) based methods, the TLS approach is physically more appropriate for the printer modeling problem because it accounts for errors in the measured reflectance of both the primaries and the modeled samples. A TLS method based on print measurements from single-colorant step-wedges is first developed. The method is then extended to incorporate multicolorant print measurements using an iterative algorithm. The LS and TLS techniques are compared through tests performed on two color printers, one employing conventional rotated halftone screens and the other using a dot-on-dot halftone screen configuration. Our experiments indicate that the TLS methods yield a consistent and significant improvement over the LS-based techniques for model parameter estimation. The gains from the TLS method are particularly significant when the number of patches for which measured data is available is limited.

On independent color space transformations for the compression of CMYK images

Device and image-independent color space transformations for the compression of CMYK images were studied. A new transformation (to a YYCC color space) was developed and compared to known ones. Several tests were conducted leading to interesting conclusions. Among them, color transformations are not always advantageous over independent compression of CMYK color planes. Another interesting conclusion is that chrominance subsampling is rarely advantageous in this context. Also, it is shown that transformation to YYCC consistently outperforms the transformation to YCbCrK, while being competitive with the image-dependent KLT-based approach.

Optimal nonnegative color scanning filters

In this correspondence, the problem of designing color scanning filters for multi-illuminant color recording is considered. The filter transmittances are determined from a minimum-mean-squared orthogonal tristimulus error criterion that minimizes the color error in estimates obtained from noisy recorded data. Nonnegativity constraints essential for physical realizability are imposed on the filter transmittances. In order to demonstrate the significant improvements obtained, the resulting filters are compared with suboptimal filters reported in earlier literature.
