Interface dermatitis

Interface dermatitis can be classified based upon the cell type that dominates the infiltrate (ie, neutrophilic, lymphocytic, or lymphohistiocytic) or by the intensity of the interface inflammation. Regarding lymphocytic interface dermatitis, there are 2 broad categories: cell-poor interface dermatitis, when only a sparse infiltrate of inflammatory cells is present along the dermoepidermal junction, or cell rich, which typically occurs as a heavy bandlike infiltrate that obscures the basal layers of the epidermis. In the case of lymphocytic interface dermatitis, the latter is often termed a lichenoid interface dermatitis. This review focuses upon the mononuclear cell-predominant forms of interface dermatitis.

Expression of Mycoplasma proteins carrying an affinity tag in M. pneumoniae allows rapid purification and circumvents problems related to the aberrant genetic code

In Mycoplasma pneumoniae and several other mollicutes, the UGA opal codon specifies tryptophan rather than a translation stop. This often makes it difficult to express Mycoplasma proteins in heterologous hosts. In this work, we demonstrate that mollicute proteins can be fused to an affinity tag and be expressed directly in M. pneumoniae. The protein can then be purified by affinity chromatography and be used for biochemical or any other desired analysis.

Cutaneous reactions to drugs in children

Cutaneous eruptions are a commonly reported adverse drug reaction. Cutaneous adverse drug reactions in the pediatric population have a significant impact on patients' current and future care options. A patient's recollection of having a "rash" when they took a medication as a child is a frequent reason for not prescribing a particular treatment. The quick detection and treatment of cutaneous adverse drug reactions, plus identification of the causative agent, are essential for preventing the progression of the reaction, preventing additional exposures, and ensuring the appropriate use of medications for both the current condition and others as the patient ages. The purpose of this review is to discuss a reasonable approach to recognition and initial management of cutaneous adverse drug reactions in children.
