Abstract
The liver is an interesting organ with unusual regenerative capacity to adapt its role as the main detoxifying organ in the body that is likely to be injured by various toxins. Many aspects of the signaling mechanisms involved in hepatic regeneration have been clarified, however, several central questions are still in debate. The purpose of this review is to focus on the areas still not well understood, including the factors that determine whether hepatocytes or liver progenitor cells should be evoked for proliferation after various injuries, the factors that initiate liver regeneration, the mechanisms by which the liver maintains and compensates its function during regeneration, the signals that lead to proper termination of liver regeneration, and the process of lobular remodeling after regeneration.
