Abstract
Transient electronic and vibrational absorption spectroscopy unravel the mechanisms and dynamics of bimolecular reactions of CN radicals with acetone in deuterated chloroform solutions. The CN radicals are produced by ultrafast ultraviolet photolysis of dissolved ICN. Two reactive forms of CN radicals are distinguished by their electronic absorption bands: "free" (uncomplexed) CN radicals, and "solvated" CN radicals that are complexed with solvent molecules. The lifetimes of the free CN radicals are limited to a few picoseconds following their photolytic production because of geminate recombination to ICN and INC, complexation with CDCl3 molecules, and reaction with acetone. The acetone reaction occurs with a rate coefficient of (8.0 ± 0.5) × 10(10) M(-1) s(-1) and transient vibrational spectra in the C═N and C═O stretching regions reveal that both the nascent HCN and 2-oxopropyl (CH3C(O)CH2) radical products are vibrationally excited. The rate coefficient for the reaction of solvated CN with acetone is 40 times slower than for free CN, with a rate coefficient of (2.0 ± 0.9) × 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) obtained from the rise in the HCN product v1(C═N stretch) IR absorption band. Evidence is also presented for CN complexes with acetone that are more strongly bound than the CN-CDCl3 complexes because of CN interactions with the carbonyl group. The rates of reactions of these more strongly associated radicals are slower still.

Abstract
We report the reaction dynamics of F atom with selected alkanes studied by crossed beam scattering with DC slice ion imaging. The target alkanes are propane, n-butane, and n-pentane. The product alkyl radicals are probed by 157 nm single photon ionization following reaction at a collision energy of ∼10 kcal mol(-1). The analyzed data are compared with the corresponding theoretical studies. Reduced translational energy distributions for each system show similar trends with little of the reaction exoergicity appearing in translation. However, the pentane reaction shows a somewhat smaller fraction of available energy in translation than the other two, suggesting greater energy channeled into pentyl internal degrees of freedom. The center-of-mass angular distributions all show backscattering as well as sharp forward scattering that decreases in relative intensity with the size of the molecule. Possible reasons for these trends are discussed.

Abstract
State-to-state reaction probabilities for the H + CH4→ H2 + CH3 reaction are calculated by accurate full-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations employing the multilayer multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree approach and the quantum transition-state concept. Reactions starting from different vibrational and rotational states of the methane reactant are investigated for vanishing total angular momentum. The vibrational state distributions of the products are found to be essentially independent of the initial rovibrational state of the reactants. The reaction products only show vibrational excitation in the methyl umbrella mode. No excitation in H2 vibration or another CH3 vibration is observed. Analyzing the results, the observed loss of vibrational memory can be explained by a transition-state-based view of the reaction process.

Abstract
We present ultrahigh-resolution measurements of state-to-state inelastic differential cross sections for NO-Ne and NO-Ar collisions, obtained by combining the Stark deceleration and velocity map imaging techniques. We show that for counterpropagating crossed beam geometries, the effect of the velocity spreads of the reagent beams on the angular resolution of the images is minimized. Furthermore, the counterpropagating geometry results in images that are symmetric with respect to the relative velocity vector. This allows for the use of inverse Abel transformation methods that enhance the resolution further. State-resolved diffraction oscillations in the differential cross sections are measured with an angular resolution approaching 0.3°. Distinct structures observed in the cross sections gauge the quality of recent ab initio potential energy surfaces for NO-rare-gas atom collisions with unprecedented precision.

Abstract
Bimolecular reactions in the gas phase exhibit rich and varied dynamical behaviour, but whether a profound knowledge of the mechanisms of isolated reactive collisions can usefully inform our understanding of reactions in liquid solutions remains an open question. The fluctuating environment in a liquid may significantly alter the motions of the reacting particles and the flow of energy into the reaction products after a transition state has been crossed. Recent experimental and computational studies of exothermic reactions of CN radicals with organic molecules indicate that many features of the gas-phase dynamics are retained in solution. However, observed differences may also provide information on the ways in which a solvent modifies fundamental chemical mechanisms. This perspective examines progress in the use of time-resolved infra-red spectroscopy to study reaction dynamics in liquids, discusses how existing theories can guide the interpretation of experimental data, and suggests future challenges for this field of research.

Abstract
Despite significant progress made in past decades, it is still challenging to elucidate dynamics mechanisms for polyatomic reactions, in particular, involving complex formation. The reaction of O((1)D) with methane has long been regarded as a prototypical polyatomic system of direct insertion reaction in which the O((1)D) atom can insert into the C-H bond of methane to form a "hot" methanol intermediate before decomposition. Here, we report a combined theoretical and experimental study on the O((1)D) + CHD3 reaction, on which good agreement between theory and experiment is achieved. Our study revealed that this complex-forming reaction actually proceeds via a trapped abstraction mechanism, rather than an insertion mechanism as has long been thought. We anticipate that this reaction mechanism should also be responsible for the reaction of O((1)D) with ethane and propane, as well as many other chemical reactions with deep wells in the interaction region.

Abstract
Extending the fully quantum-state-resolved description of elementary chemical reactions beyond three or four atom systems is a crucial issue in fundamental chemical research. Reactions of methane with F, Cl, H or O are key examples that have been studied prominently. In particular, reactive resonances and nonintuitive mode-selective chemistry have been reported in experimental studies for the F+CH4 →HF+CH3 reaction. By investigating this reaction using transition-state spectroscopy, this joint theoretical and experimental study provides a clear picture of resonances in the F+CH4 system. This picture is deduced from high-resolution slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) spectra and accurate full-dimensional (12D) quantum dynamics simulations in the picosecond regime.

Abstract
The O((1)D) + CD4 → OD + CD3 reaction was investigated using the crossed molecular beam technique with sliced velocity map imaging at four different collision energies: 1.6, 2.8, 4.6, and 6.8 kcal/mol. The vibrational ground state product CD3 was detected using a (2 + 1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). Remarkably different features were found in the forward and backward scatterings, and gradually changed with the collision energy. These features were attributed to two distinctive reaction mechanisms-insertion and abstraction-that occur on the ground and excited state surfaces, respectively. Contributions from the two mechanisms were extracted from the experiment results, and a positive correlation was found between the abstraction proportion and the collision energy. The threshold for the abstraction pathway was determined and compared with results from calculations.
