Three-dimensional direct lithography of stable perovskite nanocrystals in glass

High-order mode waveguide amplifier with high mode extinction ratio written in an Er3+-doped phosphate glass

Inscription of fiber-compatible active waveguides in high-gain glass, followed by direct interconnection with few-mode fibers, is one of the most promising solutions for all-optical mode-division multiplexing. In this work, based on the femtosecond laser writing technique, we propose a general fabrication scheme for inscribing high-order mode waveguides in glass, by carefully tailoring the cross-section of the waveguides to match the mode intensity distribution via an improved multi-scan approach. Specifically, we design and fabricate two kinds of waveguides, namely, LP₀₁-mode waveguide and LP₁₁-mode waveguide in a highly Er³⁺-doped phosphate glass, enabling the insertion loss of the waveguides to be as low as 1.88 dB, and the mode extraction factor of the LP₁₁-mode waveguide up to ∼24 dB. Importantly, we have successfully achieved optical amplification of the waveguides, with an on-off gain as high as 3.52 dB. This novel high-order mode waveguide amplifier has broad application prospects in monolithic on-chip integrated photonic light sources and optical interconnection with few-mode fiber and/or silicon-based waveguide.

Two-photon collagen crosslinking in ex vivo human corneal lenticules induced by near-infrared femtosecond laser

Myopia and keratoconus have become common corneal diseases that threaten the quality of human vision, and keratoconus is one of the most common indications for corneal transplantation worldwide. Collagen crosslinking (CXL) using riboflavin and ultraviolet A (UVA) light is an effective approach for treating ophthalmic disorders and has been shown clinically not only to arrest further progression of keratoconus but also to improve refractive power for cornea. However, CXL surgery irradiated by UVA has various potential risks such as surface damage and endothelial cell damage. Here, near-infrared femtosecond laser-based two-photon CXL was first applied to ex vivo human corneal stroma, operating at low photon energy with high precision and stability. After two-photon CXL, the corneal stiffness can be enhanced by 300% without significantly reducing corneal transparency. These findings illustrate the optimized direction that depositing high pulses energy in corneal focal volume (not exceeding damage threshold), and pave the way to 3D CXL of in vivo human cornea with higher safety, precision, and efficacy.

Large-area waterproof and durable perovskite luminescent textiles

Lead halide perovskites show great potential to be used in wearable optoelectronics. However, obstacles for real applications lie in their instability under light, moisture and temperature stress, noxious lead ions leakage and difficulties in fabricating uniform luminescent textiles at large scale and high production rates. Overcoming these obstacles, we report simple, high-throughput electrospinning of large-area (> 375 cm²) flexible perovskite luminescent textiles woven by ultra-stable polymer@perovskite@cyclodextrin@silane composite fibers. These textiles exhibit bright and narrow-band photoluminescence (a photoluminescence quantum yield of 49.7%, full-width at half-maximum <17 nm) and the time to reach 50% photoluminescence of 14,193 h under ambient conditions, showcasing good stability against water immersion (> 3300 h), ultraviolet irradiation, high temperatures (up to 250 °C) and pressure surge (up to 30 MPa). The waterproof PLTs withstood fierce water scouring without any detectable leaching of lead ions. These low-cost and scalable woven PLTs enable breakthrough application in marine rescue.

Quasicylindrical Waves for Ordered Nanostructuring

Laser-induced self-organization of periodic nanostructures on highly absorbing materials is widely understood to be due to interference between laser and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that are excited by initial surface roughness. The structure order naturally emerges from the propagation phase of SPPs. Here, we reveal an unexplored mechanism that is predominantly induced by quasicylindrical waves (QCWs) with negligible contributions from SPPs. This mechanism features a new principle of order emergence in growth of periodic nanostructures through short-range electromagnetic interactions between QCWs and marginal nanofringes. In this scenario, the periodicity of nanostructures is not simply determined by the electromagnetic wavelength. With suppressed long-range interactions, the formation of nanostructures shows a domino-like growth process, thus significantly improving structure uniformity. An in situ microscopic observation is performed to characterize the temporal dynamics of structural growth and verify the new mechanism. Further, the QCWs are directly observed in experiments, which are theoretically supported by a scattering model.

Wetting Ridge-Guided Directional Water Self-Transport

Directional water self-transport plays a crucial role in diverse applications such as biosensing and water harvesting. Despite extensive progress, current strategies for directional water self-transport are restricted to a short self-driving distance, single function, and complicated fabrication methods. Here, a lubricant-infused heterogeneous superwettability surface (LIHSS) for directional water self-transport is proposed on polyimide (PI) film through femtosecond laser direct writing and lubricant infusion. By tuning the parameters of the femtosecond laser, the wettability of PI film can be transformed into superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic. After trapping water droplets on the superhydrophilic surface and depositing excess lubricant, the asymmetrical wetting ridge drives water droplets by an attractive capillary force on the LIHSS. Notably, the maximum droplet self-driving distance can approach ≈3 mm, which is nearly twice as long as the previously reported strategies for direction water self-transport. Significantly, it is demonstrated that this strategy makes it possible to achieve water self-transport, anti-gravity pumping, and chemical microreaction on a tilted LIHSS. This work provides an efficient method to fabricate a promising platform for realizing directional water self-transport.

Temporal modulation toward femtosecond laser-induced nonlinear ionization process

The temporal chirp of single femtosecond (fs) pulses will affect the laser-induced ionization process. By comparing the ripples induced by negatively and positively chirped pulses (NCPs and PCPs), the growth rate showed a significant difference, resulting in a depth inhomogeneity of up to 144%. A carrier density model tailored with temporal characteristics showed that NCPs could excite a higher peak carrier density, contributing to a highly efficient generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and overall advancement of the ionization rate. Such distinction originates from their contrary incident spectrum sequences. Current work reveals that temporal chirp modulation can control the carrier density in ultrafast laser-matter interaction, which possibly brings an unusual acceleration for surface structure processing.

Shining Transparent Displays with Stable Narrow-Band Blue-Emitting Phosphor in Layered Film

Transparent displays (TDs) rendering "levitating" images on screen have appeared as an emerging technology toward augmented/mixed reality applications. However, the traditional phosphor design and screen construction have severely limited the TD performance owing to the lack of efficient narrow-band blue emitters and stable screen structure. Herein, the novel narrow-band (full width at half maximum: 32 nm) NaLi₃ SiO₄ :Eu²⁺ phosphor with a peak at 467 nm as a key blue emitter is explored, and it is sandwiched in layered film as a unique screen design. The devised screen features decent transparency, high emission color purity, and good reliability, and the TD prototype renders "floating" static images and vivid animation with broad viewing angle (15°-165°) and large color gamut (97% of National Television Standards Committee). Spectroscopic and microstructural characterizations reveal the TD superior performance originates from synergistic contributions of moderate crystal field effect (ε_c  ≈ 1.13 eV; ε_cfs  ≈ 1.60 eV), weak vibronic coupling (S ≈ 3; ħω ≈ 285 cm^-1 ), and limited thermal ionization of 5d electrons (E_a  ≈ 0.43 eV) for NaLi₃ SiO₄ :Eu²⁺ emission and layered architecture for screen film. These findings establish fundamental guidelines for narrow-band emitting materials design and shine light on superior TD innovative development.

Femtosecond Laser Induced Lattice Deformation in KTN Crystal

In recent years, many novel optical phenomena have been discovered based on perovskite materials, but the practical applications are limited because of the difficulties of device fabrication. Here, we propose a method to directly induce localized lattice modification inside the potassium tantalate niobate crystal by using the femtosecond laser. This selective modification at the processed regions and the surrounding areas is characterized by two-dimensional Raman spectrum mapping. The spectrum variations corresponding to specific lattice vibration modes demonstrate the lattice structure deformation. In this way, the lattice expansion at the femtosecond laser irradiated regions and the lattice compression at the surrounding areas are revealed. Furthermore, surface morphology measurement confirms this lattice expansion and suggests the extension of lattice structure along the space diagonal direction. Moreover, the existence of an amorphization core is revealed. These modifications on the sample lattice can induce localized changes in physicochemical properties; therefore, this method can realize the fabrication of both linear diffraction and nonlinear frequency conversion devices by utilizing the novel optical responses of perovskite materials.

Direct in situ photolithography of perovskite quantum dots based on photocatalysis of lead bromide complexes

Photolithography has shown great potential in patterning solution-processed nanomaterials for integration into advanced optoelectronic devices. However, photolithography of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) has so far been hindered by the incompatibility of perovskite with traditional optical lithography processes where lots of solvents and high-energy ultraviolet (UV) light exposure are required. Herein, we report a direct in situ photolithography technique to pattern PQDs based on the photopolymerization catalyzed by lead bromide complexes. By combining direct photolithography with in situ fabrication of PQDs, this method allows to directly photolithograph perovskite precursors, avoiding the complicated lift-off processes and the destruction of PQDs by solvents or high-energy UV light, as PQDs are produced after lithography exposure. We further demonstrate that the thiol-ene free-radical photopolymerization is catalyzed by lead bromide complexes in the perovskite precursor solution, while no external initiators or catalysts are needed. Using direct in situ photolithography, PQD patterns with high resolution up to 2450 pixels per inch (PPI), excellent fluorescence uniformity, and good stability, are successfully demonstrated. This work opens an avenue for non-destructive direct photolithography of high-efficiency light-emitting PQDs, and potentially expands their application in various integrated optoelectronic devices.

Perovskite nanomaterials may suffer degradation during conventional photolithography. Here, the authors report a non-destructive method for patterning perovskite quantum dots based on direct photopolymerization catalyzed by lead bromide complexes.

Cu+ → Mn2+ Energy Transfer in Cu, Mn Coalloyed Cs3ZnCl5 Colloidal Nanocrystals

In this work, we report the hot-injection synthesis of Cs₃ZnCl₅ colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) with tunable amounts of Cu⁺ and Mn²⁺ substituent cations. All the samples had a rodlike morphology, with a diameter of ∼14 nm and a length of ∼30-100 nm. Alloying did not alter the crystal structure of the host Cs₃ZnCl₅ NCs, and Cu ions were mainly introduced in the oxidation state +1 according to X-ray photoelectron and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. The spectroscopic analysis of unalloyed, Cu-alloyed, Mn-alloyed, and Cu, Mn coalloyed NCs indicated that (i) the Cs₃ZnCl₅ NCs have a large band gap of ∼5.35 eV; (ii) Cu(I) aliovalent alloying leads to an absorption shoulder/peak at ∼4.8 eV and cyan photoluminescence (PL) peaked at 2.50 eV; (iii) Mn(II) isovalent alloying leads to weak Mn PL, which intensifies remarkably in the coalloyed samples, prompted by an energy transfer (ET) process between the Cu and Mn centers, favored by the overlap between the lowest (⁶A₁ → ⁴T₁) transition for tetrahedrally coordinated Mn²⁺ and the PL profile from Cu(I) species in the Cs₃ZnCl₅ NCs. The efficiency of this ET process reaches a value of 61% for the sample with the highest extent of Mn alloying. The PL quantum yield (QY) values in these Cu, Mn coalloyed NCs are lower at higher Mn contents. The analysis of the Mn PL dynamics in these samples indicates that this PL drop stems from inter-Mn exciton migration, which increases the likelihood of trapping in defect sites, in agreement with previous studies.

Mn2+-Activated Afterglow in a Transparent Perovskite Crystal

Transparent crystals of long afterglow are keenly desired for advanced applications involving three-dimensional information storage and volumetric display. Here, we report the growth of a perovskite crystal, Cs₂NaInCl₆:Mn, via a facile hydrothermal reaction. The crystal featured a high transparency up to 90% in a broad range from 400 to 750 nm. Upon ultraviolet (UV) excitation, the crystal exhibited an overlapped emission from both self-trapped exciton (STE) and Mn ions. An unusual energy transfer from Mn ion to STE was revealed through steady-state and transient photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Through concentration tuning, the afterglow duration was extended to 2500 s with a signal-to-noise ratio over 20. The single dopant of Mn ions was found to play two roles in afterglow mechanism, including both electron traps and emitting activators. This work provided a facile method to synthesize transparent crystals of persistent luminescence, opening many avenues for three-dimensional information storage and volumetric display.

Coordinate-transformation iteration algorithm for phase modulation of arbitrary axial light distribution

Axial light distribution modulation is widely applied in optical tweezers, hard-brittle material cutting, multilayer laser direct writing, etc. To generate arbitrary axial light distribution, the coordinate-transformation iteration (CTI) algorithm is presented. The CTI algorithm unifies equations in low and high numerical aperture (NA) scenarios, using the same iterative algorithm to produce phase computer-generated holograms. In a low NA scenario, twin-foci, flattop, and sin² distributions have been achieved. In high NA scenarios, multirings, multifoci, and needle-like distributions have been realized in simulation with specific polarized incident beams. Since the CTI algorithm is inherently an efficient one-dimensional phase retrieval algorithm that is not limited by NA, this method has the potential to become a well-received solution for axial light distribution modulation.

Reversible Phase Segregation and Amorphization of Mixed-Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals in Glass Matrices

Mixed-halide perovskites have attracted great attention in applications of lighting and photovoltaic devices due to their excellent properties. Understanding the phase segregation mechanism of mixed-halide perovskite has significance for suppressing the performance degradation of optoelectronic devices. Herein, we investigate the mixed-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) in isolation from the external factors (oxygen, moisture, and pressure) using glass encapsulation, which shows excellent photostability against phase segregation. By monitoring the structural evolution of the NCs in glass matrices, the coexisting phase segregation and amorphization of mixed-halide perovskites are observed in real-time. The results show that thermal-induced local temperature increase plays a dominant role in the phase segregation of mixed-halide perovskite NCs. The recovery process is driven by the spontaneous crystallization of the amorphous mixed-halide phase. The clarified dynamic equilibrium process between the compositional segregation (mixing) and structural disorder (order) gives us a better insight into the reversible phase segregation mechanism of mixed-halide perovskite.

Polymer-complexed SnO2 electron transport layer for high-efficiency n-i-p perovskite solar cells

An effective electron transport layer (ETL) plays a pivotal role in suppressing nonradiative recombination at the interface as well as promoting perovskite crystallization to facilitate electron extraction in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a functional polymer, poly(amidoamine) (PM) dendrimer, is introduced to rationalize the morphology and electrical performance of SnO₂ nanocrystals to construct an SnO₂ charge transfer layer. PM offers an even SnO₂ colloidal dispersion with a particle-size distribution of ∼10 nm, which prevents the agglomeration of nanocrystals significantly. The polymer-complexed SnO₂ provides a uniform and dense ETL film without island-like agglomeration, yielding a large conductive layer superior to that of the control. Equally important, the wettability-improved SnO₂ ETL with PM modification produces a high-quality perovskite film with larger grain size, resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the champion n-i-p PSC of up to 22.93% with negligible hysteresis. Noticeably, the device based on SnO₂-PM maintained 71% of its initial PCE (only 49% for the control device) after storing in the ambient environment for 45 days (relative humidity of 30%-80%) without packaging.

Trap-tuning in afterglow perovskite crystals through alkali metal ion doping

Herein, we report a trap-tuning strategy involving alkali metal ions of Li⁺ and K⁺, which enabled a fine tuning of afterglow traps at 250 K. Through Li⁺/K⁺ doping, a red afterglow from Cs₂AgInCl₆:Mn was activated at room temperature, which was extended up to 3600 s at low temperature. Thermoluminescence measurement revealed a shallow trap at ∼0.50 eV below the conduction band, which could be shifted up- and down-ward by dopant species.

Third-order optical nonlinearity of CsPb(Br/I)3 metal halide perovskites nano-crystals embedded chalcogenide glass

The nonlinear optical properties of emerging metal halide perovskites (MHP) materials are sufficiently intriguing that this topic has become the hotspots in the realm of material science. Hence, we investigate the third-order nonlinear optical properties of CsPbBrx/I_3-x (x = 1, 2, 3) MHP nano-crystals (NCs) embedded chalcogenide glass (ChG) within a GeS₂-Sb₂S₃ pseudo-binary system, by monitoring the composition, excitation wavelength and intensity dependencies via femtosecond Z-scan technique. We have found that the intrinsic large optical nonlinearity of ChG can be further enhanced because of the incorporation of MHP NCs, and that the optical nonlinearity of MHP-ChG containing pristine Br NCs is more pronounced compared to its counterparts with mixed Br/I NCs, due to a combination of multiple factors.

Ag Nanocluster-Enhanced Scintillation Properties of Borophosphate Glasses Doped with CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots

A novel and effective method to improve scintillation properties of glass-ceramics, such as intensity enhancement and decay-time shortening, is reported in this work. Compared with crystal scintillators, glass scintillators always have the problems of low efficiency and long decay; how to solve them has always been a scientific puzzle in the field of scintillation glass-ceramics. The plasma enhancement effect can be predicted to solve the above problems. Ag⁺ ions were diffused into glasses by ion exchange, and then Ag nanoparticles and CsPbBr₃ quantum dots were formed by heat treatment. The structure of the CsPbBr₃ perovskite consists of a series of shared corner PbBr₆ octahedra with Cs ions occupying the cuboctahedral cavities. By using Ag and the plasma resonance effect, the photoluminescence intensity of CsPbBr₃ quantum dot glasses was enhanced by 3 times, its radioluminescence intensity increased by 6.25 times, and its decay time was reduced by a factor of more than one. Moreover, the mechanism of photoluminescence and radioluminescence enhanced by Ag and plasma was discussed based on the experimental results and finite-difference time-domain method. We concluded that the increase in radioluminescence intensity was related to plasma enhancements and the energy exchange between Ag nanoclusters and CsPbBr₃ quantum dots. Doping Ag is a valid means to improve the scintillation luminescence of CsPbBr₃ quantum dot glasses, which can be applied in the field of scintillation.

Femtosecond laser writing of waveguides in zinc oxide crystals: fabrication and mode modulation

We report for the first time on optical waveguides in zinc oxide (ZnO) crystals fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing. The confocal Raman microscopy under 488 nm laser excitation is used to investigate the micro-modifications of the laser irradiation, and guiding properties are studied via the end-face coupling at 632.8 nm. The mode modulation has been achieved by the adjustment of laser writing parameters. A minimum propagation loss of ∼6 dB/cm is obtained for the double-line waveguide structures. A Y-branch waveguide beam splitter is also fabricated, reaching a splitting ratio of nearly 1:1. The original optical properties in the guiding region have been well preserved, according to the confocal Raman investigation, which suggests potential applications of the ZnO waveguides for integrated photonics and nonlinear optics.

Tunable color generation in CdTe-doped silicate glass enabled by ultrashort laser pulses: interior coloring and multilevel encryption

The launch of the big data era puts forward challenges for information security. Herein, a new kind of silicate glass system co-doped with CdO and ZnTe, capable of achieving the controllable generation of intrinsic color centers (brown and green) and tiny nuclei of CdTe via direct laser writing (DLW), is developed. The controlled growth of CdTe QDs thermally, leads to a permanent color of orange at the cost of accelerated aging of the color centers of brown and green. On the one hand, going beyond traditional 2D surface coloration, the high transparency of the studied bulk medium makes 3D volumetric interior coloration possible. On the other hand, by encoding ciphertext into the tiny nuclei of CdTe, a strategy of color encryption and heat decryption is established, which brings about the merits of expanded storage capacity and improved information security. The demonstration application confirmed the user-defined multiscale interior coloration and an unprecedented multidimensional color-encryption scheme with a high-security level. The present work highlights a great leap in transparent materials for color encryption and hopefully stimulates the development of new color division multiplexing encryptions.

In Situ Growth of High-Quality CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots with Unusual Morphology inside a Transparent Glass with a Heterogeneous Crystallization Environment for Wide Gamut Displays

All-inorganic CsPbBr₃ perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are considered to be one of the most promising green candidates for the new-generation backlight displays. The pending barriers to their applications, however, lie in their mismatching of the target window of green light, scalable production, susceptibility to the leaching of lead ions, and instability in harsh environments (such as moisture, light, and heat). Herein, high-quality CsPbBr₃ QDs with globoid shapes and cuboid shapes were in situ crystallized/grown inside a well-designed glass to produce nanocomposites with peak emission at 526 nm, which not only exhibited photoluminescence quantum yields of 53 and 86% upon 455 and 365 nm excitation, respectively, but also have been imparted of high stability when they were submerged in water and exposed to heat and light. These characteristics, along with their lead self-sequestration capability and easy-to-scale preparation, can enable breakthrough applications for CsPbBr₃ QDs in the field of wide color gamut backlit display. A high-performance backlight white LEDs was fabricated using the CsPbBr₃ QDs@glass powder and K₂SiF₆:Mn⁴⁺ red phosphor, which shows a color gamut of ∼126% of the NTSC or 94% of the Rec. 2020 standards.

Synergistic Stimulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Stable Super-cooled Liquid and Quenched Glass

Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses are a fascinating new class of materials, yet their prosperity has been impeded by the scarcity of known examples and limited vitrification methods. In the work described in this report, we applied synergistic stimuli of vapor hydration and thermal dehydration to introduce structural disorders in interpenetrated dia-net MOF, which facilitate the formation of stable super-cooled liquid and quenched glass. The material after stimulus has a glass transition temperature (T_g) of 560 K, far below the decomposition temperature of 695 K. When heated, the perturbed MOF enters a super-cooled liquid phase that is stable for a long period of time (>10⁴ s), across a broad temperature range (26 K), and has a large fragility index of 83. Quenching the super-cooled liquid gives rise to porous MOF glass with maintained framework connectivity, confirmed by EXAFS and PDF analysis. This method provides a fundamentally new route to obtain glassy materials from MOFs that cannot be melted without causing decomposition.

Optical Modification of 2D Materials: Methods and Applications

2D materials are under extensive research due to their remarkable properties suitable for various optoelectronic, photonic, and biological applications, yet their conventional fabrication methods are typically harsh and cost-ineffective. Optical modification is demonstrated as an effective and scalable method for accurate and local in situ engineering and patterning of 2D materials in ambient conditions. This review focuses on the state of the art of optical modification of 2D materials and their applications. Perspectives for future developments in this field are also discussed, including novel laser tools, new optical modification strategies, and their emerging applications in quantum technologies and biotechnologies.

Effect of Glass Composition on Luminescence and Structure of CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots in an Amorphous Matrix

Glass matrix embedding is an efficient way to improve the chemical and thermal stability of the halide perovskite QDs. However, CsPbX₃ QDs exhibit distinct optical properties in different glass matrixes, including photoluminescence (PL) peak position, PL peak width, and optical band gap. In this work, the temperature-dependent PL spectra, absorption spectra, high-energy X-ray structure factor S(Q), and pair distribution function (PDF) were integrated to analyze the structural evolution of CsPbBr₃ QDs in different glass matrixes. The results show that the lattice parameters and atomic spacing of CsPbBr₃ QDs are affected by the glass composition in which they are embedded. The most possibility can be attributed to the thermal expansion mismatch between CsPbBr₃ QDs and the glass matrix. The results may provide a new way to understand the effect of the glass composition on the optical properties of CsPbBr₃ QDs in a glass matrix.

Phototriggered color modulation of perovskite nanoparticles for high density optical data storage

The perovskite nanocrystals-dichloromethane (PNCs-DCM) with tunable fluorescent color under UV light are a new kind of photoresponsive luminescent materials (PLMs), which are qualified to apply in optical data storage.
