Abstract
OBJECTIVE Painful bone metastases cause reduced quality of life (QoL) in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Alpha-emitter 223Radium is associated with a clear survival benefit and significant bone pain palliation in CRPC patients with symptomatic bone metastases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between pain relief and psychological distress during the time course of therapy in patients treated with 223Radium. METHODS A total of 63 patients with mCRPC undergoing 223Radium treatment in our Nuclear Medicine Unit, carefully instructed on the possibility of improving the pain and increasing the survival by the treatment, were retrospectively evaluated. Pain response during treatment was assessed with the Brief Pain Inventory Numeric Rating Scale. Psychological distress was evaluated through the analysis of specific items from EORTC QoL questionnaires C30 and BM22, submitted to patients at baseline and after each 223Radium cycle. RESULTS Pain intensity showed a significant decrease after first 223Radium administration (-1.03 points, p = 0.0032), with a subsequent stability through the course of treatment (-1.30 points, p = <0.001). Psychological status did not show significant variations during 223Radium treatment, and no association was found between psychological status and pain relief in our population. CONCLUSIONS In our experience, bone pain palliation provided by 223Radium do not correlate with an improved psychological status in patients with advanced PC. This observation emphasises the role of the psychological aspect in the evaluation of the QoL and the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach in which the emotional aspect of the patient is carefully evaluated.

Abstract
Prostate cancer was found to reduce cardiac and left ventricle (LV) masses in association with diminished exercise capacity in rats. We tested the hypothesis that exercise training will mitigate prostate cancer-induced cardiac and skeletal muscle atrophy and improve LV function versus sedentary tumor-bearing counterparts. Copenhagen rats ( n = 39; ~5 mo old) were randomized into four groups: exercise-trained tumor-bearing (EXTB) or control (EXCON) and sedentary tumor-bearing (SEDTB) or control (SEDCON). Dunning R-3327 prostate cancer cells were injected orthotopically in 19 of the 39 animals. Treadmill exercise training was performed for 60 min/day for ~30 days. Animals underwent echocardiography to examine ventricle dimensions "Pre-" cancer injection or exercise (PRE) and 15 (Post 1) and 32-35 (Post 2) days after cancer cell injection with tissues collected after Post 2. LV TNF-α and IL-6 concentrations were measured post mortem. Cardiac and LV mass of SEDTB animals were lower than all groups ( P < 0.05). Tumor mass was negatively correlated with LV mass in EXTB (-0.75, P < 0.02) and SEDTB animals (-0.72, P < 0.02). EXCON group had higher stroke volume Post 2 assessment compared with both sedentary groups ( P < 0.05) but not EXTB animals. No difference in LV [IL-6] or [TNF-α] was found between the cancer groups. The current investigation demonstrates prostate cancer, independent of anticancer treatment, significantly reduces cardiac mass and LV mass as well as locomotor muscle masses. However, moderate-intensity exercise training can mitigate cardiac and skeletal muscle atrophy with prostate cancer and preserve the cardiac phenotype (i.e., mass and function) to that of the healthy sedentary group. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study demonstrates the atrophic effects of prostate cancer on cardiac and skeletal muscle mass independent of anticancer treatment(s) that can be mitigated with moderate-intensity exercise. These findings have important implications for potentially improving the quality of life as well as therapeutic outcomes for patients with prostate cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore whether people with advanced cancer who had assistive devices had higher or lower ADL ability and/or HRQoL than people with advanced cancer who did not have assistive devices. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 164 participants with advanced cancer. Self-reported ADL ability and HRQoL were assessed using the ADL-Interview and the EORTC QLQ-C30. Data regarding assistive devices were collected using a study-specific questionnaire. Data were analysed using multiple linear regression. The regression coefficients (B) were presented in crude form and adjusted for potential confounding variables (age, gender, cohabiting, receiving help, physical functioning, fatigue and pain). p-Values (p) < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS Having assistive devices was associated with lower ADL ability (B = -0.923, p = <0.0001), but this association was not significant after adjustment where it was found that physical functioning was a confounder positively associated with ADL ability (B = 0.030, p = <0.0001). No significant association was found between having assistive devices and HRQoL. Both fatigue (B = -0.336, p = <0.0001) and pain (B = -0.124, p = 0.010) were negatively associated with HRQoL. CONCLUSION The participants had the same ADL ability and HRQoL regardless of them having assistive devices. Interventions addressing physical functioning or fatigue and pain might contribute to enhancing ADL ability and HRQoL among people with advanced cancer.

Abstract
Introduction Recent studies suggest that docetaxel plus androgen deprivation therapy can prolong survival among men with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). However, as a cytotoxic therapy, there is a need to understand the experiences of men with mHSPC receiving docetaxel and their carers in a real-world setting. Methods During phase 1, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with men with mHSPC (n = 31) and their carers (n = 14) in Europe to elicit in-depth data concerning their experiences with docetaxel. Eighteen men were also asked to record their experiences in a diary for 7 days. During phase 2, men with mHSPC (n = 161) and carers of men with mHSPC (n = 135) completed an online survey comprising self-report questionnaires including the Cancer Therapy Satisfaction Questionnaire, Brief Fatigue Inventory, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate, EuroQol-5-Dimensions and the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers (carers only). Results At the outset of therapy, men reported a willingness to take docetaxel to prolong their life, despite being fearful of the potential side effects and impacts on their daily lives. Patient and carer experiences were generally consistent with pre-treatment expectations. However, variations in individual experiences and their ability to tolerate side effects were evident. Fatigue emerged as a prominent symptom with the majority (n = 98, 60.9%) of men reporting experiencing moderate-severe fatigue in the past 24 h. Participant ratings of fatigue were strongly correlated with health-related quality of life (r = − 0.82). Nausea, diarrhoea and sore mouth were also among the most bothersome symptoms for participants. Conclusions Findings from this study highlight that real-world experience of docetaxel may differ from that observed in clinical trials and that care must be taken to ensure that treatment options are tailored to the needs of individual patients to promote not only how long patients survive but also the quality of that survival. Abstract
To explore the relationship between fatigue and self-efficacy, and quality of life (QoL) during chemotherapy of patients with breast, lung or gastrointestinal cancers. This study is a descriptive-correlational research. The study population comprised of patients with breast, lung and gastrointestinal cancer treated at the outpatient chemotherapy unit. Patients' self-efficacy and QoL were assessed using Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue scale and Strategies Used by Patients to Promote Health scale. The sample included 236 patients receiving chemotherapy for lung cancer (30.9%), gastrointestinal (25.8%) or breast cancers (25.4%). The patients had little confidence in performing self-care self-efficacy during chemotherapy for the management of illness and chemotherapy-related side effects. The study found that the patients with cancer were moderately fatigued and all the domains of QoL of patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy were considerably impaired. Positive correlations were found between self-efficacy scores and fatigue scores (p < 0.001), and QoL scores (p < 0.001). Better self-efficacy beliefs were associated with better QoL and lower fatigue. Improving the cancer patients' self-confidence in performing self-care behaviours may have a positive impact on performing cognitive and behavioural fatigue management strategies and can influence positively the patients' QoL during chemotherapy.

Abstract
Exercise capacity is reduced in prostate cancer patients concurrently treated with androgen deprivation therapy compared to healthy counterparts. We tested the hypothesis that prostate cancer independently reduces endurance exercise capacity in a preclinical orthotopic prostate tumor model. Male Copenhagen rats performed an initial treadmill running test to exhaustion. The rats' prostates were subsequently injected with either prostate tumor cells (R-3327 AT-1, tumor bearing, n=9) or vehicle control (sham, n=9) and the treadmill tests were repeated four and eight weeks post-surgery. Left ventricle contractility (LV Δpressure/Δtime) was subsequently measured under anesthesia and the heart and select hindlimb muscles were dissected and weighed. Initial times to exhaustion were not different between groups (sham: 28.24±1.26, tumor bearing: 28.63±2.49 min, P=0.90). Time to exhaustion eight weeks post-surgery was reduced compared to initial values for both groups but was significantly lower in the tumor bearing (13.25±1.44 min) versus the sham (21.17±1.87 min, P<0.01) group. Within the tumor bearing group, LV Δpressure/Δtime was significantly negatively correlated with tumor mass (-0.71, P<0.05). Body mass at eight weeks post-surgery was not different between groups (P=0.26) but LV mass (↓17%, P<0.01), as well as the mass of select hindlimb skeletal muscles, was significantly lower in the tumor bearing versus sham group. Within the tumor bearing group, LV muscle mass was significantly negatively correlated with prostate tumor mass (r=-0.85, P<0.01). Prostate cancer reduced endurance exercise capacity in the rat and reductions in cardiac function and mass and skeletal muscle mass may have played an important role in this impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To translate and validate the Cancer-Related Fatigue (CRF) Scale in the Greek language. DESIGN A cross-sectional descriptive design was used in order to translate and validate the CRF Scale in Greek. Factor analyses were performed to understand the psychometric properties of the scale and to establish construct, criterion and convergent validity. SETTING Outpatients' oncology clinics of two public hospitals in Cyprus. PARTICIPANTS 148 patients with advanced prostate cancer undergoing chemotherapy. RESULTS The Cancer Fatigue Scale (CFS) had good stability (test-retest reliability r=0.79, p<0.001) and good internal consistency (Cronbach's α coefficient for all 15 items α=0.916). Furthermore, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sampling Adequacy (KMO value) was found to be 0.743 and considered to be satisfactory (>0.5). The correlations between the CFS physical scale (CFS-FS scale) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 physical subscales were found to be significant (r=-0.715). The same occurred between CFS cognitive and EORTC cognitive subscale (r=-0.579). Overall, the criterion validity was verified. The same occurs for the convergent validity of the CFS since all correlations with the Global Health Status (q29-q30) were found to be significant. CONCLUSIONS This is the first validation study of the CRF Scale in Greek and warrant of its use in the assessment of prostate cancer patient's related fatigue. However, further testing and validation is needed in the early stages of the disease and in patients in later chemotherapy cycles.
