Adjuvant imatinib for patients with high-risk gastrointestinal stromal tumors: a retrospective cohort study. Sci Rep 2017; 7:16834. Abstract
The duration of adjuvant imatinib for high-risk patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) is still controversial. Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed the data of high-risk patients with GISTs to investigate the appropriate duration. All 185 patients were divided into 4 groups: <1 year (Group A), 1–2 years (Group B), 2–3 years (Group C) and >3 years (Group D). The mean recurrence-free survival (RFS) in Groups A, B, and C were 44.3, 62.1, and 86.8 months, respectively (P < 0.001); the mean overall survival (OS) in Groups A, B and C was 75.2, 88.1, and 94.7 months, respectively (P = 0.009). The 5-year RFS in Groups A, B, C, and D was 15%, 26%, 83%, and 100%, respectively (P < 0.001); and the 5-year OS was 64%, 88%, 88%, and 100%, respectively (P < 0.001). The greatest impact on unfavorable outcomes was the tumor mitotic rate (HR, 2.01, 95% CI, 1.38–2.94; P < 0.001). Duration of adjuvant imatinib was the only favorable factor (HR, −0.95, 95% CI, 0.93–0.97; P < 0.001). For high-risk patients with high tumor size or mitotic rate, or non-gastric GISTs, we recommend that more than 3 years of adjuvant imatinib is feasible.

Abstract
Ischemic stroke following acute myocardial infarction is a rare but a serious complication. Because the pathophysiology of stroke is dynamic, it is often hard to identify the cause of stroke. Here, we present the case of a 75-year-old man with ischemic stroke following angina pectoris caused by severe anemia and localized peritonitis due to gastrointestinal stromal tumor of small intestine. On admission, he showed consciousness disturbance, fever, and left hemiplegia. The electrocardiogram on admission showed ST-segment depression in V2 to V6 which was normalized 4 hours later. The ultrasound cardiogram showed the mild hypokinesis in the apical portion of left ventricle which was also normalized later. The magnetic resonance imaging and angiography showed ischemic stroke in watershed area between right anterior and middle cerebral arteries area and stenosis of distal portion of right middle cerebral artery. The computed tomography of abdomen showed a mass of small intestine. We decided to perform curative surgery after transfusion and successfully resected the mass of the small intestine, which was revealed to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). This is a successfully treated case of GIST in which the complicated pathophysiology of watershed cerebral infarction following angina pectoris might be clearly revealed.

Abstract
Completely different types of GIST rupture have been reported as same perforation type. We classified retrieved cases of GIST rupture to three types: abscess type, hemoperitoneum type, bowel perforation type. Each type demonstrates a specific mechanism of perforation causing characteristic complaints.
Introduction Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Overt peritonitis caused by GIST rupture is very uncommon. Three types of GIST rupture have been described: closed perforation due to abscess (abscess type), hemoperitoneum leading to rupture of the hematoma capsule in the tumor (hemoperitoneum type), and perforation of the digestive tract via a fistula leading to central necrosis of the tumor (bowel perforation type). This report describes a patient with spontaneous tumor rupture and diffuse peritonitis, a variant of the bowel perforation type of GIST rupture. Presentation of case A 74-year-old man presented with symptoms of vomiting and abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an approximately 10 × 7-cm mass in the pelvis with free air and fluid collection. Emergency laparotomy revealed a tumor in the jejunum, which was ruptured with a hole measuring 5 mm in diameter. The tumor and part of the jejunum were resected. Immunohistochemically, the mass was diagnosed as a GIST originating from the gastrointestinal tract. Despite chemotherapy with imatinib mesylate, the patient died 22 months after surgery. Conclusions This report describes a patient with acute diffuse peritonitis due to spontaneous rupture of a primary GIST of the jejunum.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study was aimed to assess the main clinical, pathological and therapeutic characteristics of a cohort of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). METHODS Observational study including 66 patients diagnosed with GIST admitted to our hospital between 2002 and 2015. Parameters related to medical history, clinical manifestations, medical and surgical treatment, histopathology, and morbi-mortality were studied. A review of the literature was included to correlate with the results. RESULTS The most frequent location of GIST in our patients was the stomach (65.2%), in which the gastric fondo was the predominant region. The most common clinical manifestation was gastrointestinal hemorrhage (45.5%), followed by incidental finding after imaging or invasive procedures (33.3%). 58 patients underwent surgery (90.6%), 15.5% were urgent. A total of 69% of the GISTs had a size between 2 and 10cm. The one-year mortality was 7.9%, all cases related to local or remote extension, or surgical complications. CONCLUSION There is a large clinical variability among GIST cases. The first choice of treatment is surgery, which is feasible in most cases and should be as conservative as possible. The prognosis varies depending on the size and proliferation index, thus close follow-up should be performed. No tumor marker is clearly associated with a poor prognosis. New molecular biology studies are needed in order to find therapeutic targets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our purpose is to determine the impact of CT enterography on small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) detection and biologic aggressiveness, and to identify any imaging findings that correlate with biologic aggressiveness. METHODS Records of patients with histologically confirmed small bowel GISTs who underwent CT imaging were reviewed. Biologic aggressiveness was based on initial histologic grading (very low, low, intermediate, high grade; or malignant), with upgrade to malignant category if local or distant metastases developed during clinical follow-up. Imaging indications, findings, and type of CT exam were compared with the biologic aggressiveness. RESULTS 111 small bowel GISTs were identified, with suspected small bowel bleeding being the most common indication (45/111; 40.5%). While the number of malignant GISTs diagnosed by CT remained relatively constant (2-3 per year), the number of non-malignant GISTs increased substantially (mean 1.5/year, 1998-2005; 8.4/year, 2006-2013). In patients with suspected small bowel bleeding, CT enterography identified 33 GISTs (7/33, 21% malignant) compared to 12 GISTs by abdominopelvic CT (6/12, 50% malignant; p < 0.03). Tumor size (p < 0.0001), internal necrosis (p = 0.005), internal air or enteric contrast (p ≤ 0.021), and ulceration (p ≤ 0.021) were significantly associated with high-grade and malignant tumors, and irregular or invasive tumor borders (p < 0.01) was associated with malignant tumors. CONCLUSION The detection of small bowel GISTs can increase due to the use of CT enterography in patients with suspected small bowel bleeding. The large majority of small bowel GISTs detected by CT enterography are not malignant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multimodality treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) with surgery and adjuvant imatinib mesylate (IM), along with an emerging role for neoadjuvant IM prior to evaluation for resectability has resulted in high survival rates. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of patients who underwent surgery for GIST, prior to or followed by IM therapy. A total of 112 patients underwent surgery between January 2009 and March 2015 at our centre. This included 27 patients with upfront resectable disease, 76 patients with locally advanced GIST who received neoadjuvant IM followed by surgery and 9 patients with metastatic disease who had excellent response to IM and were taken for surgery. RESULTS The primary tumor in the non metastatic patients was in the stomach (53%), duodenum (16%), rectum (12%), jejunum (11%), ileum (7%), and others (2%). Median duration of neoadjuvant IM was 5 months with 4 patients showing disease progression during neoadjuvant IM. Ninety-three percent of all patients had R0 resections, while 7% had R+ resections. The estimated 3- and 5-year DFS in non-metastatic patients was 86.1% and 67% respectively with a 3- and 5-year median OS of 95.4% and 91.7% respectively. Five-year PFS and OS for the metastatic patients was 88.8% and 100% respectively. Lack of adjuvant IM was the only factor related to inferior PFS and OS. CONCLUSIONS Longer duration of neoadjuvant IM should be considered in locally advanced GIST prior to surgery and resection may be considered in responding metastatic patients.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder associated with neurofibromin 1 (NF1) gene mutation, which generates an increased risk of variety of tumor types. The current study reports a case involving NF1, pheochromocytoma (PHEO) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). A 56-year-old man presented with abdominal pain and polypnea. Clinical investigation revealed multiple diffuse soft-tissue lesions throughout his body, and pigmented macules on the skin. Imaging analyses revealed thoracic scoliosis, multiple subcutaneous nodules in the abdomen and trunk, and a 7.0×7.7×8.9-cm oval-shaped, cystic mass in the left upper abdominal cavity. Immunohistochemical staining indicated that S-100 protein and synaptophysin were highly expressed in adrenal gland neoplasm, whilst CD117 and CD34 were highly expressed in small intestine tumors. The overall clinical and pathological finding suggested a diagnosis of NF1, giant PHEO and small intestinal stromal tumor. In addition, a literature review was conducted to identify the specific clinical features of patients with this condition. Only 11 similar cases have been reported worldwide. In the present study, paroxysmal hypertension occurred in the majority of patients, and GISTs tended to be located in the small intestine. In addition, the present study demonstrated that many of the patients had a poor prognosis. Therefore, the present study indicates that NF1-PHEO-GIST is a special type tumor with varied clinical symptoms, which may be associated with an increased risk for poor prognosis; however, more studies are required to confirm this.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) can present with different clinical and immunohistochemical characteristics according to different anatomic sites. The aim of this study was to compare clinicopathologic and computed tomography (CT) features of small bowel stromal tumors located in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In total, 197 patients (109 male, 88 female) with small bowel GISTs were retrospectively reviewed. All tumors had definite anatomic sites in the small bowel tract with surgical confirmation. The clinicopathologic variables included age, sex, onset of symptoms, and tumor risk category. CT variables included tumor size, degree enhancement, enhancement pattern (region of necrosis), adjacent tissue involvement, lymphadenopathy, and distant metastasis. We assessed any possible differences according to different GIST site of origin. Based on tumor size and mitotic count, the risk categories in different anatomic sites did not differ significantly between duodenal and jejunal GISTs. However, high risk ileum GISTs accounted for 66.0% of ileal cases, which was higher than duodenum cases (36.8%, P = 0.002) and jejunum cases (43.9%, P = 0.004). The mean size of GISTs in the ileum was 9.77 cm, which was significantly larger than in the duodenum (7.41 cm, P = 0.043), and in the jejunum (8.14 cm, P = 0.027). On CT images, enhancement degree appeared to gradually increase from the duodenum to the ileum in the portal phase, and the enhancement pattern presented a tendency for heterogeneity. In Conclusions, the clinicopathologic and CT features of small bowel GISTs can differ according to different primary anatomic sites.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. Their development typically depends on mutations in the Kit or PDGFRA gene. We have diagnosed and treated a duodenal bulb GIST in a 63-year-old woman. The confirmation of the diagnosis was made on the basis of a histological test after radical resection of the tumour. Making the right diagnosis is crucial for patients, since complex surgical and pharmacological approaches are effective even in the advanced stages of the disease. Nevertheless, radical surgical treatment is still the primary choice for patients with GIST.

Abstract
Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is known for its wide variability in biological behaviors and it is difficult to predict its malignant potential. The aim of this study is to explore the characteristics and prognostic factors of GIST. Methods Clinical and pathological data of 497 GIST patients in our center between 1997 and 2012 were reviewed. Results Patients were categorized into very low-, low-, intermediate- and high-risk groups according to modified National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus classification system. Among the 401 patients untreated with imatinib mesylate (IM), 5-year overall survival (OS) in very low-, low-, intermediate- and high-risk groups was 100%, 100%, 89.6% and 65.9%; and 5-year relapse-free survival (RFS) was 100%, 98.1%, 90.9% and 44.5%, respectively. Univariate analysis revealed that sex, tumor size, mitotic rate, risk grade, CD34 expression, and adjacent involvement were predictors of OS or RFS. COX hazard proportional model (Forward LR) showed that large tumor size, high mitotic rate, and high risk grade were independent risk factors to OS, whereas high mitotic rate, high risk grade and adjacent organ involvement were independent risk factors to RFS. The intermediate-high risk patients who received IM adjuvant therapy (n = 87) had better 5-year OS and RFS than those who did not (n = 188) (94.9% vs. 72.1; 82.3% vs. 56.3%, respectively). Similarly, advanced GIST patients underwent IM therapy (n = 45) had better 3-year OS and 1-year progression-free survival (PFS) than those who didn’t (n = 42) (75.6% vs. 6.8%; 87.6% vs. 12.4%, respectively). Conclusions Very low- and low-risk GISTs can be treated with surgery alone. Large tumor size, high mitotic rate, high risk grade, and adjacent organ involvement contribute to the poor outcome. IM therapy significantly improves the survival of intermediate-high risk or advanced GIST patients. Abstract
The small intestine is an uncommon site of gastro-intestinal (GI) bleeding; however it is the commonest cause of obscure GI bleeding. It may require multiple blood transfusions, diagnostic procedures and repeated hospitalizations. Angiodysplasia is the commonest cause of obscure GI bleeding, particularly in the elderly. Inflammatory lesions and tumours are the usual causes of small intestinal bleeding in younger patients. Capsule endoscopy and deep enteroscopy have improved our ability to investigate small bowel bleeds. Deep enteroscopy has also an added advantage of therapeutic potential. Computed tomography is helpful in identifying extra-intestinal lesions. In cases of difficult diagnosis, surgery and intra-operative enteroscopy can help with diagnosis and management. The treatment is dependent upon the aetiology of the bleed. An overt bleed requires aggressive resuscitation and immediate localisation of the lesion for institution of appropriate therapy. Small bowel bleeding can be managed by conservative, radiological, pharmacological, endoscopic and surgical methods, depending upon indications, expertise and availability. Some patients, especially those with multiple vascular lesions, can re-bleed even after appropriate treatment and pose difficult challenge to the treating physician.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopy is the procedure of choice for the resection of gastric Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) smaller than 2 cm; there is still debate regarding the most appropriate operative approach for larger GISTs. The aims of this study were to evaluate the safety and long-term efficacy of laparoscopic resection of gastric GISTs larger than 2 cm. METHODS Between 2007 and 2011, we prospectively enrolled all patients affected by gastric GIST larger than 2 cm. Exclusion criteria for the laparoscopic approach were the presence of metastases and the absence of any involvement of the esophago-gastric junction, the pyloric canal, or any adjacent organ. Final diagnosis of GIST was confirmed by histological and immunohistochemical analysis. Follow-up assessment included abdominal CT scans every 6 months for the first 2 years and yearly thereafter. RESULTS Twenty-four consecutive patients were enrolled. Twenty-one patients (87.5%) were symptomatic. The most common symptoms were gastrointestinal bleeding and abdominal pain. The mean tumor size was 5.51 cm (range 2.5-12.0 cm). GISTs were located in the lesser curvature in five cases (20.8%), in the greater curvature in seven cases (29.1%), in the posterior wall in one case (4.1%), in the anterior wall in eight cases (33.3%), and in the fundus in 3 cases (12.5%). Laparoscopic resection was possible in all cases and took on average of 55 min (range 30-105 min). Median blood loss was 24 ml. No major intraoperative complications were observed. Mortality rate was 0%. Median postoperative stay was 3 days. No patients were lost to follow-up. No recurrences occurred after a median follow-up period of 75 months. CONCLUSION Although larger randomized controlled trials comparing different surgical strategies for large gastric GISTs are warranted, our study supports the evidence that laparoscopic resection of gastric GISTs is feasible, safe, and effective on long-term clinical outcome even for lesions up to 12 cm.

Abstract
AIM: To explore whether clinical presentations of gastric small gastrointestinal tumors (GISTs) mimics gastrointestinal dyspepsia symptoms.
METHODS: The endosonographic data of 167 patients who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection at the Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, China between 2009 and 2011 were analyzed. GISTs and leiomyomas had a similar intragastric distribution and similar locations within the gastric wall. Therefore, patients with GISTs were chosen as the study group and those with leiomyomas were chosen as the control group. Dyspepsia symptom questionnaires were used to investigate and compare the gastrointestinal symptoms of patients with GISTs and those with gastric leiomyomas before and after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The questionnaires evaluated symptoms such as epigastric pain, heartburn, regurgitation, epigastric discomfort, nausea and vomiting, abdominal bloating, and eructation. Symptoms were assessed using a four-point scoring scale.
RESULTS: GISTs were the most common gastric submucosal lesion (67 cases, 40.12%), followed by leiomyomas (38 cases, 22.75%). Both groups were similar in terms of gender distribution (P = 0.49), intragastric location (P = 0.525), and originating layer within the gastric wall (P = 0.449), but leiomyomas were more commonly found in the proximal fundus (P < 0.05). Overall, 94.2% of the patients with small GISTs and 93.5% of those with gastric leiomyomas experienced some dyspepsia; however, total symptom scores were significantly lower in the GIST group than in the leiomyoma group (1.34 ± 1.27 vs 2.20 ± 1.70, P < 0.05). Each component of the symptom score demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the GIST patients after ESD (P < 0.05), including epigastric pain (0.80 ± 0.90 vs 0.13 ± 0.46), heartburn (0.63 ± 1.08 vs 0.13 ± 0.41), regurgitation (0.55 ± 0.87 vs 0.22 ± 0.57), epigastric discomfort (0.70 ± 0.98 vs 0.32 ± 0.47), nausea and vomiting (0.27 ± 0.62 vs 0.05 ± 0.21), abdominal bloating (0.70 ± 0.90 vs 0.27 ± 0.49), and eructation (0.36 ± 0.61 vs 0.21 ± 0.46). For leiomyoma patients, symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and eructation improved after treatment; however, these improvements were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Thus, the pathophysiology of dyspepsia symptoms may be different between the two groups.
CONCLUSION: Symptoms of gastric small GISTs may mimic those of functional dyspepsia. An alternative diagnosis should be considered in patients with functional dyspepsia and treatment failure.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are the most common connective tissue neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, the most common clinical presentation of which is with abdominal pain or gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS We describe a case of a perforated gastric GIST as well as reviewing the relevant published literature. RESULTS A 51-year-old woman presented to the acute assessment unit with a 1-day history of severe epigastric pain on a background of longstanding reflux symptoms. Radiological investigation demonstrated a perforated mass in the gastric antrum and the patient subsequently underwent an emergency distal gastrectomy. She recovered well postoperatively and was discharged home. Her condition remains stable six months following surgery. Histological analysis revealed the perforated lesion to be a GIST. A PubMed search suggests that this is the first English report to describe a perforated gastric GIST. Six further published reports (written in English or with an English abstract) describing the presentation of small bowel GISTs with perforation are reviewed. CONCLUSIONS We present the first English report of a perforated gastric GIST. More common presentations include abdominal pain and gastrointestinal bleeding. Although rare, GISTs should be considered in the differential diagnoses of perforated gastrointestinal masses.

Abstract
AIMS The objectives of this study were (a) to report our experience regarding the association between neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs); (b) to provide a systematic review of the literature in this field; and (c) to compare the features of NF1-associated GISTs with those reported in sporadic GISTs. METHODS We reported two cases of NF1-associated GISTs. Moreover we reviewed 23 case reports/series including 252 GISTs detected in 126 NF1 patients; the data obtained from different studies were analyzed and compared to those of the sporadic GISTs undergone surgical treatment at our centre. RESULTS NF1 patients presenting with GISTs had a homogeneous M/F ratio with a mean age of 52.8 years. NF1-associated GISTs were often reported as multiple tumors, mainly incidental, localized at the jejunum, with a mean diameter of 3.8 cm, a mean mitotic count of 3.0/50 HPF, and KIT/PDGFR α wild type. We reported a statistical difference comparing the age and the symptoms at presentation, the tumors' diameters and localizations, and the risk criteria of the NF1-associated GISTs comparing to those documented in sporadic GISTs. CONCLUSIONS NF1-associated GISTs seem to have a distinct phenotype, specifically younger age, distal localization, small diameter, and absence of KIT/PDGRF α mutations.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are mesenchymal neoplasms that arise in the gastrointestinal tract, usually in the stomach or the small intestine and rarely elsewhere in the abdomen. They can occur at any age, the median age being 60-65 years, and typically cause bleeding, anaemia, and pain. GISTs have variable malignant potential, ranging from small lesions with a benign behaviour to fatal sarcomas. Most tumours stain positively for the mast/stem cell growth factor receptor KIT and anoctamin 1 and harbour a kinase-activating mutation in either KIT or PDGFRA. Tumours without such mutations could have alterations in genes of the succinate dehydrogenase complex or in BRAF, or rarely RAS family genes. About 60% of patients are cured by surgery. Adjuvant treatment with imatinib is recommended for patients with a substantial risk of recurrence, if the tumour has an imatinib-sensitive mutation. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors substantially improve survival in advanced disease, but secondary drug resistance is common.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Discovery of the molecular pathogenesis of Gastrointestinal stromal tumors led to the development of targeted therapies, revolutionizing their treatment. However, surgery is still the mainstay of GIST therapy and the only chance for cure. AIM Here we present a single institutional consecutive case series of 159 GIST-patients. METHODS AND PATIENTS A total of 159 GIST-patients who underwent resection between 1994 and 2011 were reviewed for clinicopathohistological data, informations on surgical and medical therapy and further follow-up, outcome and survival data. RESULTS Laparoscopic (25.2%) and open (71.1%) GIST surgery achieved complete resection rates of 97.5% and 85.2%, whereas 44.4% of incomplete and 6.6% of complete resected patients died from GIST. Compared to open surgery laparoscopy significantly reduced duration of operation (183.4 vs. 130.6 min), length of hospitalization (16.1 vs. 8.3 d) and morbidity (23% vs. 7.5%). Mean survival time was 3.7 ± 2.7 years (R0: 5.1 a and R1: 2.6 a) and the mean overall survival was 4.5 ± 3.8 years. CONCLUSION Complete surgical resection is the primary goal and laparoscopy can be performed safely in a subset of GIST-patients with potential perioperative advantages. Although not proven by the present study the authors assume that multimodal GIST-treatment, as performed in reference-centers, is required for advanced or high risk disease. Our data suggest the potential for minimally invasive GIST resection to achieving comparable oncological outcomes as after open surgery while providing low morbidity rates.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a nonepithelial, mesenchymal tumor first described by Mazur and Clark in 1983. Since then, its molecular biology has been studied in great detail. Special interest in the role of tyrosine kinase in its regulation has been the target by different drug research. Mutation in c-kit exons 9, 11, 13, 17 and PDGFRA mutation in exons 12, 14, 18 are responsible for activation of gene signaling system resulting in uncontrolled phosphorylation and tissue growth. However, 5 to 15% of GISTs does not harbor these mutations, which raises additional questions in another alternate signaling pathway mutation yet to be discovered. Diagnosis of GISTs relies heavily on KIT/CD117 immunohistochemical staining, which can detect most GISTs except for a few 3% to 5% that harbors PDGFRA mutation. Newer staining against PKC theta and DOG-1 genes showed promising results but are not readily available. Clinical manifestation of GISTs is broad and highly dependent on tumor size. Surgery still remains the first-line treatment for GISTs. The advancement of molecular biology has revolutionized the availability of newer drugs, Imatinib and Sunitinib. Together with its advancement is the occurrence of Imatinib/Sunitinib drug resistance. With this, newer monoclonal antibody drugs are being developed and are undergoing clinical trials to hopefully improve survival in patients with GISTs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of laparoscopically assisted and open resections in treatment of small bowel stromal tumors (SBST). METHODS A retrospective study of 85 patients who underwent curative resections for SBST (38 by laparoscopically assisted procedures and 47 by open procedures) was performed. RESULTS There were no differences between open and laparoscopically assisted approaches in terms of patients' age, gender, presenting symptoms, histological risk or extent of resection (P > 0.05). The median tumor size for laparoscopically assisted resections was 4.0 cm (range 1.2-7.0 cm), which was the same as that for the open resections (range 2.0-10.0 cm). There were fewer complications in the laparoscopic group than those in the open resection group (7.9% vs 17.0%), but no significant difference was observed (P > 0.05). The 2-year survival of the two patient groups was almost the same (86.8% vs 89.4%). Laparoscopically assisted procedures required on average 22.5 min less of operating time (87.5 min vs 110.0 min, P = 0.006), 1.0 day less of bowel recovery time (3.0 days vs 4.0 days, P = 0.001) and 5.0 days less in hospital stay (8.0 days vs 13.0 days, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Laparoscopically assisted resection of SBST is a safe alternative to open resection.
