Using independent component analysis for material estimation in hyperspectral images

We develop a method for automated material estimation in hyperspectral images. The method models a hyperspectral pixel as a linear mixture of unknown materials. The method is particularly useful for applications in which material regions in a scene are smaller than one pixel. In contrast to many material estimation methods, the new method uses the statistics of large numbers of pixels rather than attempting to identify a small number of the purest pixels. The method is based on maximizing the independence of material abundances at each pixel. We show how independent component analysis algorithms can be adapted for use with this problem. We demonstrate properties of the method by application to airborne hyperspectral data.

From colour to tissue histology: Physics-based interpretation of images of pigmented skin lesions

Through an understanding of the image formation process, diagnostically important facts about the internal structure and composition of pigmented skin lesions can be derived from their colour images. A physics-based model of tissue colouration provides a cross-reference between image colours and the underlying histological parameters. It is constructed by computing the spectral composition of light remitted from the skin given parameters specifying its structure and optical properties. The model is representative of all the normal human skin colours, irrespective of racial origin, age or gender. Abnormal skin colours do not conform to this model and thus can be detected. Once the model is constructed, for each pixel in a colour image its histological parameters are computed from the model. Represented as images, these 'parametric maps' show the concentration of dermal and epidermal melanin, blood and collagen thickness across the imaged skin as well as locations where abnormal colouration exists. In a clinical study the parametric maps were used by a clinician to detect the presence of malignant melanoma in a set of 348 pigmented lesions imaged using a commercial device, the SIAscope. Logistic regression identified the presence of melanin in the dermis, the abnormal distribution of blood within the lesion and the lesion size as the most diagnostically informative features. Classification based on these features showed 80.1% sensitivity and 82.7% specificity in melanoma detection.

Melanin and blood concentration in human skin studied by multiple regression analysis: experiments

Knowledge of the mechanism of human skin colour and measurement of melanin and blood concentration in human skin are needed in the medical and cosmetic fields. The absorbance spectrum from reflectance at the visible wavelength of human skin increases under several conditions such as a sunburn or scalding. The change of the absorbance spectrum from reflectance including the scattering effect does not correspond to the molar absorption spectrum of melanin and blood. The modified Beer-Lambert law is applied to the change in the absorbance spectrum from reflectance of human skin as the change in melanin and blood is assumed to be small. The concentration of melanin and blood was estimated from the absorbance spectrum reflectance of human skin using multiple regression analysis. Estimated concentrations were compared with the measured one in a phantom experiment and this method was applied to in vivo skin.
