High-speed modal decomposition of mode instabilities in high-power fiber lasers

Fast and accurate modal decomposition of multimode fiber based on stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm

A new approach for the complete modal decomposition of the optical fields emerging from the multimode fiber is presented in this paper. Based on the stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm, mode coefficients for all the bound modes in the multimode fiber can be exactly calculated by utilizing one intensity profile of the beam. Numerical simulation validates the feasibility, and the reconstructed error is below 0.1%. In the case of six modes within the fiber, the running time is about 2 s.

High-power thermally guiding index-antiguiding-core fibers

We investigate high-power operation of a very-large-mode-area (VLMA) fiber concept based on an index-antiguiding, thermally guiding core in which an ytterbium-doped region is completely surrounded by silica with a slightly higher refractive index. Experimentally, regimes of antiguidance, single-mode operation, and mode instabilities predominantly with radially symmetric higher-order modes are observed. Fundamental limitations for conventional VLMA step-index fibers are discussed.

Stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers

Recently, mode instability was observed in optical fiber lasers at high powers, severely limiting power scaling for single-mode outputs. Some progress has been made towards understanding the underlying physics. A thorough understanding of the effect is critical for continued progress of this very important technology area. Mode instability in optical fibers is, in fact, a manifestation of stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering. In this work, a quasi-closed-form solution for the nonlinear coupling coefficient is found for stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers. The results help to significantly improve understanding of mode instability.

Theoretical analysis of mode instability in high-power fiber amplifiers

We present a simple theoretical model of transverse mode instability in high-power rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers. The model shows that efficient power transfer between the fundamental and higher-order modes of the fiber can be induced by a nonlinear interaction mediated through the thermo-optic effect, leading to transverse mode instability. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the instability dynamics are investigated, and it is shown that the instability can be seeded by both quantum noise and signal intensity noise, while pure phase noise of the signal does not induce instability. It is also shown that the presence of a small harmonic amplitude modulation of the signal can lead to generation of higher harmonics in the output intensity when operating near the instability threshold.

Temporal dynamics of mode instabilities in high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers

The temporal behavior of mode instabilities in active large mode area fibers is experimentally investigated in detail. Thus, apart from the onset threshold of mode instabilities, the output beam is characterized using both high-speed camera measurements with 20,000 frames per second and photodiode traces. Based on these measurements, an empiric definition of the power threshold of mode instabilities is introduced. Additionally, it is shown that the temporal dynamics show a transition zone between the stable and the unstable regimes where well-defined periodic temporal fluctuations on ms-timescale can be observed. Finally, it is experimentally shown that the larger the mode-field area, the slower the mode-instability fluctuation is. The observations support the thermal origin of mode instabilities.

Mode analysis with a spatial light modulator as a correlation filter

A procedure for the real-time analysis of laser modes using a phase-only spatial light modulator is outlined. The procedure involves encoding into digital holograms by complex amplitude modulation a set of orthonormal basis functions into which the initial field is decomposed. This approach allows any function to be encoded and refreshed in real time (60 Hz). We implement a decomposition of guided modes propagating in optical fibers and show that we can successfully reconstruct the observed field with very high fidelity.

Build up and decay of mode instability in a high power fiber amplifier

State-of-the-art high power Yb-doped large mode area fibers have been developed to a performance level able to reach the so-called mode instability threshold. In this contribution we will discuss the experimental results regarding the temporal evolution (build up and decay) of this effect to come closer to a comprehensive understanding of its driving mechanisms. Our investigations prove that the relevant time scale for build up and decay of mode instability is in the millisecond range and thus deliver experimental evidence of underlying thermal effects. To the best of our knowledge these are the first systematic, time resolved investigations on that topic.

Physical origin of mode instabilities in high-power fiber laser systems

Mode instabilities, i.e. the rapid fluctuations of the output beam of an optical fiber that occur after a certain output power threshold is reached, have quickly become one of the most limiting effects for the further power scaling of fiber laser systems. Even though much work has been done over the last year, the exact origin of the temporal dynamics of this phenomenon is not fully understood yet. In this paper we show that the origin of mode instabilities can be explained by taking into account the interplay between the temporal evolution of the three-dimensional temperature profile inside of the active fiber and the related waveguide changes that it produces via the thermo-optical effect. In particular it is proposed that non-adiabatic waveguide changes play an important role in allowing energy transfer from the fundamental mode into the higher order mode. As it is discussed in the paper, this description of mode instabilities can explain many of the experimental observations reported to date.

Origin of thermal modal instabilities in large mode area fiber amplifiers

We present a dynamic model of thermal modal instability in large mode area fiber amplifiers. This model allows the pump and signal optical intensity distributions to apply a time-varying heat load distribution within the fiber. This influences the temperature distribution that modifies the optical distributions through the thermo-optic effect thus creating a feedback loop that gives rise to time-dependent modal instability. We describe different regimes of operation for a representative fiber design. We find qualitative agreement between simulation results and experimental results obtained with a different fiber including the time-dependent behavior of the instability and the effects of different cooling configurations on the threshold. We describe the physical processes responsible for the onset of the instability and suggest possible mitigation approaches.

Complete measurement of fiber modal content by wavefront analysis

We propose and demonstrate the use of a wavefront analyzer based on lateral shearing interferometry to characterize the modal content of multimode fibers. This wavefront measurement technique is applied to large mode area fibers, and allows us to recover both the intensity and relative phase of each guided mode. This constitutes an innovative complete characterization of the beam, and might be used as a probe in deterministic active wavefront correction techniques.
