Influence of Bisphenol A on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Presence and leaching of bisphenol a (BPA) from dental materials

BPA has been reported to leach from some resin based dental restorative materials and materials used for orthodontic treatment. To confirm and update previous findings, especially in light of the new temporary lower threshold value for tolerable daily BPA intake, we have investigated the leaching of BPA from 4 composite filling materials, 3 sealants and 2 orthodontic bonding materials. The materials were either uncured and dissolved in methanol or cured. The cured materials were kept in deionized water for 24 hours or 2 weeks. Samples were subsequently analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS-MS). The composite filling material Tetric EvoFlow^® and the fissure sealant DELTON^® showed significantly higher levels of BPA leaching compared to control samples for all test conditions (uncured, 24 h leaching and 2 weeks leaching). There were no significant differences in amount of leached BPA for any of the tested materials after 24 hours compared to 2 weeks. These results show that BPA is still released from some dental materials despite the general concern about potential adverse effects of BPA. However, the amounts of BPA were relatively low and most likely represent a very small contribution to the total BPA exposure.

Altitude above 1500 m is a major determinant of asthma incidence. An ecological study

BACKGROUND

Previous studies suggest an inverse correlation between asthma and altitude. In the present work, we performed an in-depth analysis of asthma incidence in the 758 Mexican counties covered by the largest medical institution in the country (∼37.5 million insured subjects), and evaluated its relationships with altitude and other factors.

METHODS

Asthma incidence in each county was calculated from new cases diagnosed by family physicians. Other variables in the same counties, including selected diseases, geographical variables, and socioeconomic factors, were also obtained and their association with asthma was evaluated through bivariate and multivariate analyses.

RESULTS

Median asthma incidence was 296.2 × 100,000 insured subjects, but tended to be higher in those counties located on or near the coast. When asthma incidence was plotted against altitude, a two-stage pattern was evident: asthma rates were relatively stable in counties located below an altitude of ∼1500 m, while these rates progressively decreased as altitude increased beyond this level (r_S = -0.51, p < .001). Multivariate analysis showed that, once each variable was adjusted by the potential influence of the others, asthma incidence was inversely correlated with altitude (standardized β coefficient, -0.577), helminthiasis (-0.173), pulmonary tuberculosis (-0.130), and latitude (-0.126), and was positively correlated with acute respiratory tract infection (0.382), pneumonia (0.289), type 2 diabetes (0.138), population (0.108), and pharyngotonsillitis (0.088), all with a p ≤ .001.

CONCLUSION

Our study showed that altitude higher than ∼1500 m comprises a major factor in determining asthma incidence, with the risk of new-onset asthma decreasing as altitude increases. Other less influential conditions were also identified.

Gut Microbiota, Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals, and the Diabetes Epidemic

Diabetes is rapidly emerging as one of the biggest health concerns worldwide, with profound implications for disability, mortality, and costs. This suddenly escalating rate of diabetes correlates with global industrialization and the production of plastics, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, electronic waste, and food additives that release endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) into the environment and the food chain. Emerging evidence indicates an association between exposure of EDCs and diabetes. In humans, these chemicals are also metabolized by the gut microbiota and thereby their toxicodynamics are altered. In this review we highlight studies that focus on the role of gut microbiota in EDC-induced hyperglycemia and dysregulated glucose homeostasis. We also discuss the translational implications of understanding EDC-microbiota interactions for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes.

Chronic Inflammatory Diseases and Green Tea Polyphenols

Chronic inflammatory diseases affect millions of people globally and the incidence rate is on the rise. While inflammation contributes to the tissue healing process, chronic inflammation can lead to life-long debilitation and loss of tissue function and organ failure. Chronic inflammatory diseases include hepatic, gastrointestinal and neurodegenerative complications which can lead to malignancy. Despite the millennial advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, there remains no effective cure for patients who suffer from inflammatory diseases. Therefore, patients seek alternatives and complementary agents as adjunct therapies to relieve symptoms and possibly to prevent consequences of inflammation. It is well known that green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways. These comprise transcription nuclear factor-kappa B mediated I kappa B kinase complex pathways, programmed cell death pathways like caspases and B-cell lymphoma-2 and intervention with the surge of inflammatory markers like cytokines and production ofcyclooxygenase-2. This paper concisely reviews relevant investigations regarding protective effects of GrTPs and some reported adverse effects, as well as possible applications for GrTPs in the treatment of chronic and inflammatory complications.
