Multimodal signaling in fowl,Gallus gallus

Many social birds produce food-associated calls. In galliforms, these vocalizations are typically accompanied by a distinctive visual display,creating a multimodal signal known as tidbitting. This system is ideal for experimental analysis of the way in which signal components interact to determine overall efficacy. We used high-definition video playback to explore perception of male tidbitting by female fowl, Gallus gallus. Hens experienced four treatments consisting of multimodal tidbitting, visual tidbitting without sound, audible tidbitting without a male present, and a silent empty cage control. Hens took longer to begin food search when the display was silent, but the overall rate of this response did not differ among the multimodal, visual only or audio only playback treatments. These results suggest that the visual and vocal components of tidbitting are redundant, but they also highlight the importance of a temporal dimension for any categorization scheme. Visual displays also evoked inspection behavior,characterized by close binocular fixation on the head of the playback male,which is known to facilitate individual recognition. This may also allow hens to assess male quality. Such social responses reveal that tidbitting probably has multiple functions and provide a new insight into the selective factors responsible for the evolution of this complex multimodal signal.

Hydroxynitrile glucosides

beta- and gamma-Hydroxynitrile glucosides are structurally related to cyanogenic glucosides (alpha-hydroxynitrile glucosides) but do not give rise to hydrogen cyanide release upon hydrolysis. Structural similarities and frequent co-occurrence suggest that the biosynthetic pathways for these compounds share common features. Based on available literature data we propose that oximes produced by CYP79 orthologs are common intermediates and that their conversion into beta- and gamma-hydroxynitrile glucosides is mediated by evolutionary diversified multifunctional orthologs to CYP71E1. We designate these as CYP71(betagamma) and CYP71(alphabetagamma); in combination with the classical CYP71(alpha) (CYP71E1 and orthologs) these are able to hydroxylate any of the carbon atoms present in the amino acid and oxime derived nitriles. Subsequent dehydration reactions and hydroxylations and a final glycosylation step afford the unsaturated beta- and gamma-hydroxynitrile glucosides. This scheme would explain the distribution patterns of alpha-, beta- and gamma-hydroxynitrile glucosides found in plants. The possible biological functions of these hydroxynitriles are discussed.

SCPP gene evolution and the dental mineralization continuum

Many genes critical to vertebrate skeletal mineralization are members of the secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein (SCPP) gene family, which has evolved by gene duplication from a single ancestral gene. In humans, mutations in some of these SCPP genes have been associated with various diseases related to dentin or enamel hypoplasia. Recently, systematic searches for SCPP genes of various species have allowed us to investigate the history of phylogenetically variable dental tissues as a whole. One important conclusion is that not all disease-associated SCPP genes are present in tetrapods, and teleost fish probably have none, even in toothed species, having acquired their complement of SCPP genes through an independent duplication history. Here, we review comparative analyses of mineralized dental tissues, with particular emphasis on the use of SCPPs, within and between tetrapods and teleosts. Current knowledge suggests a close relationship among bone, dentin, teleost fish enameloid (enamel-like hard tissue), and tetrapod enamel. These tissues thus form a mineralized-tissue continuum. Contemporary dental tissues have evolved from an ancestral continuum through lineage-specific modifications.

Bile components and amino acids affect survival of the newly excysted juvenile Clonorchis sinensis in maintaining media

Clonorchis sinensis thrives on bile juice. The effects of bile and bile acids on newly excysted juvenile C. sinensis (CsNEJ) were studied in terms of survival. Survival of CsNEJs maintained in 1x Locke's solution, Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium, NCTC 109, Eagle's, RPMI 1640, and 0.1% glucose was high, but dropped rapidly in 2x Locke's, 0.85% NaCl, and phosphate-buffered saline. Most amino acids in the media favored CsNEJ survival; however, aspartic and glutamic acids and adenine reduced survival. Survival was also significantly lower in media containing more than 0.1% bile. CsNEJs preconditioned in low bile media survived longer in higher bile media. All bile acids and conjugated bile salts were found to favor CsNEJ survival, except for lithocholic acid (LCA) which was toxic. NCTC 109 medium was found to be optimal for the in vitro maintenance of CsNEJs and 1x Locke's solution to be suitable for analyzing the biological effects of bioactive compounds and molecules. Based on these results, we propose that bile acids enhance activity of CsNEJs, but LCA deteriorate CsNEJs.
