Abstract
Two series of 2,5-dipyridyl- and 2,5-dithienylphosphole derivatives containing sigma3- or sigma4-P atoms were prepared, and their optical (UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence spectra) and electrochemical properties were systematically evaluated. These physical properties depend mainly on the natures of the 2,5-substituents and of the phosphorus moiety, and they revealed that these compounds contain extended pi-conjugated systems. Structure-property relationships were established on the basis of these experimental data and ab initio calculations on the parent molecules. The limited aromatic character and low-lying LUMO of the phosphole ring appear to be crucial for achieving a highly delocalised pi system. Electrooxidation of 2,5-dithienylphosphole derivatives affords electroactive films with low optical band gaps. As observed for the corresponding monomers, the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers can be varied over a wide range by modifying the nature of the phosphorus moiety.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Polycondensation of 2,5-dialkoxydivinylbenzene-bridged bispyrroles and squaric acid resulted in extensively conjugated polymers with strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption around 800-1000 nm, which is a signature of their low band gap (E(g)). Conjugated polymers with such a strong NIR absorption are rare. One of the synthesized polysquaraines showed a significantly low E(g) of 0.79 eV with an intrinsic conductivity of 5.3 x 10(-4) S/cm.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A series of regioregular oligothiophenes bearing chiral oxazoline residues have been synthesized in high yields by a stepwise synthesis using the Stille cross-coupling reaction. The chiroptical properties of the oligothiophenes up to the octamer were investigated with UV-visible and CD spectroscopies. The octamer showed split-type Cotton effects in chloroform as a good solvent in the presence of a poor solvent such as acetonitrile, while the lower molecular weight oligomers exhibited almost no induced CD.

Abstract
Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and its derivatives were originally prepared as strong electron-donor molecules for the development of electrically conducting materials. This Review emphasizes how TTF and its derivatives offer new and in some cases little-exploited possibilities at the molecular to the supramolecular levels, as well as in macromolecular aspects. TTF is a well-established molecule whose interest goes beyond the field of materials chemistry to be considered an important building block in supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, and in systems able to operate as machines. At the molecular level, TTF is a readily available molecule which displays a strong electron-donor ability. However, its use as a catalyst for radical-polar crossover reactions, thus mimicking samarium iodide chemistry, has only recently been addressed. Important goals have been achieved in the use of TTF at the macromolecular level where TTF-containing oligomers, polymers, and dendrimers have allowed the preparation of new materials that integrate the unique properties of TTF with the processability and stability that macromolecules display. The TTF molecule has also been successfully used in the construction of redox-active supramolecular systems. Thus, chemical sensors and redox-switchable ligands have been prepared from TTF while molecular shuttles and molecular switches have been prepared from TTF-containing rotaxanes and catenanes. A large synthetic effort has been devoted to the preparation of the so-called organic ferromagnets, many of which are derived from TTF. The main task in these systems is the introduction of ferromagnetic coupling between the conduction electrons and localized electrons. TTF has also played a prominent role in molecular electronics where TTF-containing D-sigma-A molecules have allowed the preparation of the first confirmed unimolecular rectifier. Recently, it has been confirmed that TTF can display efficient nonlinear optic (NLO) responses in the second and third harmonic generation as well as a good thermal stability. These findings can be combined with the redox ability of TTF as an external stimuli to provide a promising strategy for the molecular engineering of switchable NLO materials. Fullerenes endowed with TTF exhibit outstanding photophysical properties leading to charge-separated (CS) states that show remarkable lifetimes.

Abstract
The series of monodisperse Pt-bridged TEE oligomers 3a-f was prepared by oxidative Glaser-Hay oligomerization of monomer 7 under end-capping conditions. These novel molecular rods extend in length from 3.3 nm (monomeric 3a) to 12.1 nm (hexameric 3 f). Their isolation was achieved by high performance gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and their purification was best monitored by analytical GPC in combination with matrix-assisted laser-desorption-ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The mass spectra of each oligomer revealed the molecular ion or its sodium complex as parent ion together with a clean, highly characteristic fragmentation pattern. Delayed addition of the end-capping reagent PhC(triple bond)CH to the oligomerization mixture afforded polymer 10 with an average of approximately 32 repeat units and a remarkably narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn=1.06), which is indicative of a living polymerization process. UV/Vis spectral data as well as measurements of the second hyperpolarizability gamma by third harmonic generation (THG) revealed a nearly complete lack of pi-electron delocalization along the oligomeric backbone. The Pt atoms act as true insulating centers, and the Pt-C(sp) bonds hardly possess any pi character. The synthesis of the molecular rods 3a-f provides another demonstration of the power of oxidative acetylenic homocouplings for the preparation of unusual nanoarchitecture.

Abstract
Two Kekulé hydrocarbons, 2,2-dimethyl-2H-benzo[cd]fluoranthene (1) and its benzannellated analogue 2,2-dimethyl-2H-dibenzo[cd,k]fluoranthene (2), were generated photochemically from two different photoprecursors each and investigated spectroscopically in cryogenic matrices by UV-vis, fluorescence, and EPR and in solution using ns flash photolysis and chemical trapping experiments. Hydrocarbon 1 is a ground-state singlet species, whereas compound 2 has a triplet ground state, the first such neutral Kekulé hydrocarbon. This difference, which is supported by density functional calculations, has profound influence on the spectroscopy and reactivity of the two compounds. Using the results of the spectroscopic measurements, trapping experiments, and density functional calculations, the singlet-triplet gap for 1 is estimated to be 2.3-2.8 kcal mol(-1), with the singlet the ground state, and 0.8-1.3 kcal mol(-1) for 2, in favor of the triplet.

Abstract
New chiral and soluble binaphthyl derivatives (12 and 13) endowed with carboxaldehyde or cyanomethyl functional groups have been prepared as suitable building blocks for the synthesis by Knoevenagel condensation of a series of optically active block copolymers (1-7) with controlled effective conjugation length. A variety of functionalized co-monomers (14-19) have been prepared by different synthetic procedures to be used in further polymerization reactions with binaphthyl derivatives 12 and 13. Depending upon the nature of the co-monomers, it is possible to tune the wavelength of the new polymers, which is very close to that of the respective repeating units. Fluorescence measurements on polymers 1-3 reveal a strong blue-green emission with Stokes shifts of 74-107 nm. Theoretical calculations at the semiempirical AM-1 level have been carried out on model compounds, and the calculated torsion angles are in agreement with the electronic spectra data. Finally, the redox properties of the polymers prepared (1-7) were determined by cyclic voltammetry, and an amphoteric behavior with oxidation potentials ranging from 1.1 to 1.6 V and reduction potentials close to -1.5 V was found.

Abstract
A novel family of glycopolythiophenes containing sialic acid or mannose ligands were prepared and evaluated for their ability to bind lectins, virus, and bacteria. For the set of glycopolythiophenes studied, the spacer-length between the polymer backbone and the ligand was varied to optimize binding interactions. The glycopolymers were blue-shifted (absorbance of ca. 400 nm) relative to the corresponding homo-polythiophenes (absorbance ca. 440 nm), suggesting a twisted conformation for the glycopolymers. The altered conformation is likely due to electrostatic or H-bonding interactions between the polymer chains, arising from the carbohydrate ligand. Further conformational changes in the polythiophene backbone were detected by the binding of specific receptors; lectins (wheat germ agglutinin, concanavalin A), Influenza virus, and Escherichia coli. The binding interactions result in an unusual red-shift in the visible absorption of the polymer backbone, suggesting a lengthening of the effective conjugated length upon interaction of the ligand with its congnate receptor. These conjugated glycopolymeric systems offer a potentially new platform for the detection of molecular binding interactions.

Abstract
We present a combined experimental/theoretical study of the electronic properties of conjugated para-phenylene type molecules under high pressure up to 80 kbar. Pressure is used as a tool to vary the molecular geometry and intermolecular interaction. The influence of the latter two on singlet and triplet excitons as well as polarons is monitored via optical spectroscopy. We have performed band structure calculations for the planar poly(para-phenylene) and calculated the dielectric function. By varying the intermolecular distances and the length of the polymer repeat unit the observed pressure effects can be explained.

Abstract
The chiroptical properties of a novel, optically active regioregular poly[3-(4-((R)-4-ethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)phenyl)thiophene] (poly-1) were investigated in mixtures of a good solvent, chloroform, and a variety of poor solvents using CD spectroscopy. Most poor solvents induced CD on poly-1 with similar Cotton effects, while acetonitrile and nitromethane caused dramatic changes in the Cotton effects of poly-1.
