Zn-MOF Encapsulated Antibacterial and Degradable Microneedles Array for Promoting Wound Healing

Four-Dimensional Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogels Micro-Structured via Femtosecond Laser Additive Manufacturing

Rapid fabricating and harnessing stimuli-responsive behaviors of microscale bio-compatible hydrogels are of great interest to the emerging micro-mechanics, drug delivery, artificial scaffolds, nano-robotics, and lab chips. Herein, we demonstrate a novel femtosecond laser additive manufacturing process with smart materials for soft interactive hydrogel micro-machines. Bio-compatible hyaluronic acid methacryloyl was polymerized with hydrophilic diacrylate into an absorbent hydrogel matrix under a tight topological control through a 532 nm green femtosecond laser beam. The proposed hetero-scanning strategy modifies the hierarchical polymeric degrees inside the hydrogel matrix, leading to a controllable surface tension mismatch. Strikingly, these programmable stimuli-responsive matrices mechanized hydrogels into robotic applications at the micro/nanoscale (<300 × 300 × 100 μm³). Reverse high-freedom shape mutations of diversified microstructures were created from simple initial shapes and identified without evident fatigue. We further confirmed the biocompatibility, cell adhesion, and tunable mechanics of the as-prepared hydrogels. Benefiting from the high-efficiency two-photon polymerization (TPP), nanometer feature size (<200 nm), and flexible digitalized modeling technique, many more micro/nanoscale hydrogel robots or machines have become obtainable in respect of future interdisciplinary applications.

Antibacterial Zeolite Imidazole Frameworks with Manganese Doping for Immunomodulation to Accelerate Infected Wound Healing

Numerous nanomedicines currently emerge to reduce the dramatic threat in antibiotics resistance for antibacterial application against severe bacterial infections, while it is restricted by over-reacted immune response to pathogenic bacteria. Herein, enzymatic activity is introduced into the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to achieve sterilization by releasing Zn ions, as well as inflammation regulation through the variable valence of Mn ions that are uniformly doped into its framework. Within this simple metal organic framework (MOF) structure design, Mn-ZIF-8 possesses the co-existence of Mn²⁺ /Mn⁴⁺ to endow the nanocomposite with the anti-inflammatory capabilities, which can be adjusted through the redox environment. The enzymatic activity of Mn ions and superiority of pore structure of ZIF-8 are effectively combined to realize the substrate selection via reactant molecular size and high-efficiency internal catalytic performance. By such design, this nanocomposite would not only exhibit an excellent antibacterial performance against pathogenic bacteria, but also reshape the inflammatory immunity by regulating macrophage polarization to suppress over-reacted inflammation, leading to a favorably therapeutic efficiency on bacteria-infected wound healing in animal models. Taken together, this nanoplatform provides effective approach for accelerating infected wound healing via bacteria killing and inflammation modulation, and may be extended for the therapy of other severe bacteria-induced infections.

Stimuli-Responsive Zinc (II) Coordination Polymers: A Novel Platform for Supramolecular Chromic Smart Tools

The unique role of the zinc (II) cation prompted us to cut a cross-section of the large and complex topic of the stimuli-responsive coordination polymers (CPs). Due to its flexible coordination environment and geometries, easiness of coordination-decoordination equilibria, "optically innocent" ability to "clip" the ligands in emissive architectures, non-toxicity and sustainability, the zinc (II) cation is a good candidate for building supramolecular smart tools. The review summarizes the recent achievements of zinc-based CPs as stimuli-responsive materials able to provide a chromic response. An overview of the past five years has been organised, encompassing 1, 2 and 3D responsive zinc-based CPs; specifically zinc-based metallorganic frameworks and zinc-based nanosized polymeric probes. The most relevant examples were collected following a consequential and progressive approach, referring to the structure-responsiveness relationship, the sensing mechanisms, the analytes and/or parameters detected. Finally, applications of highly bioengineered Zn-CPs for advanced imaging technique have been discussed.

Advances of Microneedles in Biomedical Applications

A microneedle (MN) is a painless and minimally invasive drug delivery device initially developed in 1976. As microneedle technology evolves, microneedles with different shapes (cone and pyramid) and forms (solid, drug-coated, hollow, dissolvable and hydrogel-based microneedles) have been developed. The main objective of this review is the applications of microneedles in biomedical areas. Firstly, the classifications and manufacturing of microneedle are briefly introduced so that we can learn the advantages and fabrications of different MNs. Secondly, research of microneedles in biomedical therapy such as drug delivery systems, diagnoses of disease, as well as wound repair and cancer therapy are overviewed. Finally, the safety and the vision of the future of MNs are discussed.
