Abstract
Four seemingly simple transformations related to the chemistry of methane will be addressed from mechanistic and conceptual points of view: 1) metal-mediated dehydrogenation to form metal carbene complexes, 2) the hydrogen-atom abstraction step in the oxidative dimerization of methane, 3) the mechanisms of the CH(4)→CH(3)OH conversion, and 4) the initial bond scission (C-H vs. O-H) as well as the rate-limiting step in the selective CH(3)OH→CH(2)O oxidation. State-of-the-art gas-phase experiments, in conjunction with electronic-structure calculations, permit identification of the elementary reactions at a molecular level and thus allow us to unravel detailed mechanistic aspects. Where appropriate, these results are compared with findings from related studies in solution or on surfaces.

Abstract
The stable and metastable, as measured using an all-electron density functional theory approach, stoichiometric clusters of boron, aluminium, gallium, indium and thallium oxide are reported. Initial candidate structures were found using an evolutionary algorithm to search the energy landscape, defined using classical interatomic potentials, for alumina and india followed by data mining or rescaling. Characterization of the refined structures was performed by electronic structure techniques at the hybrid density functional and many-body GW levels of theory. We make accurate predictions of the spectroscopic properties represented by mean ionization potentials of 11.4, 9.9, 9.8, 8.8 and 8.4 eV and electron affinities of 0.05, 1.1, 1.6, 1.9 and 2.5 eV for boria, alumina, gallia, india and thallia, respectively. The changes in the global minima, atomistic and electronic properties with respect to the cluster and cation size are discussed.

Abstract
A series of vanadium and phosphorus heteronuclear oxide cluster cations (V(x)P(y)O(z)(+)) are prepared by laser ablation and the reactions of V(3)PO(10)˙(+) and V(4)O(10)˙(+) with methane in a fast flow reactor under the same conditions are studied. A time of flight mass spectrometer is used to detect the cluster distribution before and after reactions. In addition to previously identified reaction of V(4)O(10)˙(+) + CH(4)→ V(4)O(10)H(+) + CH(3)˙, the observation of hydrogen atom pickup cluster V(3)PO(10)H(+) suggests the reaction: V(3)PO(10)˙(+) + CH(4)→ V(3)PO(10)H(+) + CH(3)˙. The rate of the reaction of V(4)O(10)˙(+) with CH(4) is approximately 2.5 times faster than that of V(3)PO(10)˙(+) with CH(4). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict that structure of V(3)PO(10)˙(+) is topologically similar to that of V(4)O(10)˙(+), as well as that of P(4)O(10)˙(+), which is very similar to V(4)O(10)˙(+) in terms of methane activation in previous studies. The facile methane activation by the homo- and hetero-nuclear oxide clusters can all be attributed to the presence of an oxygen-centered radical (O˙) in these clusters. Further theoretical study indicates that the O˙ radical (or spin density of the cluster) can transfer within the high symmetry V(4)O(10)˙(+) and P(4)O(10)˙(+) clusters quite easily, and CH(4) molecule further enhances the rate of intra-cluster spin density transfer. In contrast, the intra-cluster spin density transfer within low symmetry V(3)PO(10)˙(+) is thermodynamically forbidden. The experimentally observed reactivity difference is consistent with the theoretical consideration of the intra-cluster spin density transfer.

Abstract
One pathway toward nanomaterials with controllable band gaps is to assemble solids where atomic clusters serve as building blocks, since the electronic structures of clusters vary with size and composition. To study the role of organization in cluster assemblies, we synthesized multiple architectures incorporating As(7)(3-) clusters through control of the countercations. Optical measurements revealed that the band gaps vary from 1.1-2.1 eV, even though the assemblies are constructed from the identical cluster building block. Theoretical studies explain this variation as being a result of altering the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels by changing the countercations. Additional variations in the gap are made by covalently linking the clusters with species of varying electronegativity to alter the degree of charge transfer. These findings offer a general protocol for syntheses of nanoassemblies with tunable electronic properties.

Abstract
A precise jab to methane: The SO(2)(*+) radical cation (see figure) effectively activates CH(4) at room temperature through a [H(3)C(*)...HOSO(+)] methyl intermediate isolated in the gas phase by mass spectrometry. Methanol and ionized methyl hydrogen sulfoxylate, CH(3)OSOH(*+), are formed by selective, direct attack of the incipient methyl radical at the O atom of the intermediate. The reaction shows radical and charge effects in the activation of methane by metal-free radical cations.
