Shape and Spin State in Four-Coordinate Transition-Metal Complexes: The Case of the d6 Configuration

Picolinate-containing macrocyclic Mn2+ complexes as potential MRI contrast agents

We report the synthesis of the ligand Hnompa (6-((1,4,7-triazacyclononan-1-yl)methyl)picolinic acid) and a detailed characterization of the Mn(2+) complexes formed by this ligand and the related ligands Hdompa (6-((1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecan-1-yl)methyl)picolinic acid) and Htempa (6-((1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-1-yl)methyl)picolinic acid). These ligands form thermodynamically stable complexes in aqueous solution with stability constants of logKMnL = 10.28(1) (nompa), 14.48(1) (dompa), and 12.53(1) (tempa). A detailed study of the dissociation kinetics of these Mn(2+) complexes indicates that the decomplexation reaction at about neutral pH occurs mainly following a spontaneous dissociation mechanism. The X-ray structure of [Mn2(nompa)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2 shows that the Mn(2+) ion is seven-coordinate in the solid state, being directly bound to five donor atoms of the ligand, the oxygen atom of a coordinated water molecule and an oxygen atom of a neighboring nompa(-) ligand acting as a bridging bidentate carboxylate group (μ-η(1)-carboxylate). Nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion ((1)H NMRD) profiles and (17)O NMR chemical shifts and transverse relaxation rates of aqueous solutions of [Mn(nompa)](+) indicate that the Mn(2+) ion is six-coordinate in solution by the pentadentate ligand and one inner-sphere water molecule. The analysis of the (1)H NMRD and (17)O NMR data provides a very high water exchange rate of the inner-sphere water molecule (kex(298) = 2.8 × 10(9) s(-1)) and an unusually high value of the (17)O hyperfine coupling constant of the coordinated water molecule (AO/ℏ = 73.3 ± 0.6 rad s(-1)). DFT calculations performed on the [Mn(nompa)(H2O)](+)·2H2O system (TPSSh model) provide a AO/ℏ value in excellent agreement with the one obtained experimentally.

Cyanide-bridged W(V)Mn(III) bimetallic chains composed of a blocked W hexacyanide precursor: geometry-related magnetic couplings and magnetostructural correlation

Five one-dimensional bimetallic W(V)Mn(III) complexes 1-5, consisting of [W(CN)6(bpy)](-) anions and [Mn(Schiff base)](+) cations, were prepared. The central coordination geometry around each W atom is determined as a distorted dodecahedron (DD) for 1 and 2, and a distorted square antiprism (SAPR) for 3-5. Magnetic analyses demonstrate that compounds 1, 4, and 5 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions between magnetic centers, which are different from the ferromagnetic couplings in 2 and 3. For the distorted DD geometry, the Mn-N(ax) (ax = axial) bond length increases when moving from 1 to 2, with the Mn-N(ax)-C(ax) angle remaining constant. The elongation of the bond length is responsible for the reduction in orbital overlap and consequent ferromagnetic coupling in 2. In comparison, for 3-5 with the distorted SAPR geometry, given that the Mn-N(ax) bond lengths are similar across all the samples, the increase in the Mn-N(ax)-C(ax) angles accounts for the enhanced magnetic strength. Notably, a correlation between structure and magnetic exchange coupling is established for the first time in W(V)Mn(III) bimetallic systems based on the [W(CN)6(bpy)](-) precursor.

How to build molecules with large magnetic anisotropy

Predicting single-molecule magnets? Magnetic anisotropy, a property that plays a key role in single-molecule magnets (SMMs), has been analyzed by using theoretical methods. Mononuclear complexes and the dependence of the magnetic anisotropy on their geometrical and electronic structure, as well as how such mononuclear complexes must be combined as building blocks to obtain polynuclear complexes with large anisotropy (see figure) are considered.The magnetic anisotropy of mononuclear transition-metal complexes has been studied by means of electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory. The variation of the zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters has been analyzed for the following characteristic distortions: a tetragonal Jahn-Teller distortion, the Bailar twist, the Berry pseudorotation, and the planarization of tetrahedral complexes. Finally, the coupling of mononuclear building blocks in polynuclear complexes to obtain a large negative magnetic anisotropy necessary to improve their single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior has been studied.

CaFeO2: a new type of layered structure with iron in a distorted square planar coordination

CaFeO(2), a material exhibiting an unprecedented layered structure containing 3d(6) iron in a high-spin distorted square-planar coordination, is reported. The new phase, obtained through a low-temperature reduction procedure using calcium hydride, has been characterized through powder neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, XAS experiments as well as first-principles DFT calculations. The XAS spectra near the Fe-K edge for the whole solid solution (Sr(1-x)Ca(x))FeO(2) supports that iron is in a square-planar coordination for 0 </= x </= 0.8 but clearly suggests a change of coordination for x = 1. The new structure contains infinite FeO(2) layers in which the FeO(4) units unprecedentedly distort from square-planar toward tetrahedra and rotate along the c-axis, in marked contrast to the well-studied and accepted concept that octahedral rotation in perovskite oxides occurs but the octahedral shape is kept almost regular. The new phase exhibits high-spin configuration and G-type antiferromagnetic ordering as in SrFeO(2). However, the distortion of the FeO(2) layers leads to only a slight decrease of the Neel temperature with respect to SrFeO(2). First-principles DFT calculations provide a clear rationalization of the structural and physical observations for CaFeO(2) and highlight how the nature of the cation influences the structural details of the AFeO(2) family of compounds (A = Ca, Sr, Ba). On the basis of these calculations the driving force for the distortion of the FeO(2) layers in CaFeO(2) is discussed.

Analytical methods for calculating Continuous Symmetry Measures and the Chirality Measure

We provide analytical solutions of the Continuous Symmetry Measure (CSM) equation for several symmetry point-groups, and for the associated Continuous Chirality Measure (CCM), which are quantitative estimates of the degree of a symmetry-point group or chirality in a structure, respectively. We do it by solving analytically the problem of finding the minimal distance between the original structure and the result obtained by operating on it all of the operations of a specific G symmetry point group. Specifically, we provide solutions for the symmetry measures of all of the improper rotations point group symmetries, S(n), including the mirror (S(1), C(S)), inversion (S(2), C(i)) as well as the higher S(n)s (n > 2 is even) point group symmetries, for the rotational C(2) point group symmetry, for the higher rotational C(n) symmetries (n > 2), and finally for the C(nh) symmetry point group. The chirality measure is the minimal of all S(n) measures.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Magnetic Properties of Hexanuclear [{MnL2}4{Nb(CN)8}2] and Nonanuclear [{MnL2}6{Nb(CN)8}3] Heterometallic Clusters (L = bpy, phen)

A hexanuclear cyano-bridged {MnII4NbIV2} cluster (1) bearing 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as the blocking ligand at manganese is obtained from the reaction of cis-[MnCl2(bpy)2] and K4[Nb(CN)8]. When the blocking ligand is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), a nonanuclear cluster {MnII6NbIV3} (2) is obtained. The structure of [{Mn(bpy)2}4{Nb(CN)8}2] has been solved by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, whereas the phen derivative has been confirmed by means of the structure analysis of the corresponding WIV analogue [{Mn(phen)2}6{W(CN)8}3(H2O)2]. Magnetic measurements revealed S=9 and 27/2 spin ground states for these aggregates as a result of antiferromagnetic Nb-Mn interaction with JNb-Mn=-18.1 cm(-1) (1) and -13.6 cm(-1) (2).

Quantitative geometric descriptions of the belt iron atoms of the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase and synthetic iron(II) model complexes

Six of the seven iron atoms in the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase display an unusual geometry, which is distorted from the tetrahedral geometry that is most common in iron-sulfur clusters. This distortion pulls the iron along one C3 axis of the tetrahedron toward a trigonal pyramid. The trigonal pyramidal coordination geometry is rare in four-coordinate transition metal complexes. In order to document this geometry in a systematic fashion in iron(II) chemistry, we have synthesized a range of four-coordinate iron(II) complexes that vary from tetrahedral to trigonal pyramidal. Continuous shape measures are used for a quantitative comparison of the stereochemistry of the Fe atoms in the iron-molybdenum cofactor with those of the presently and previously reported model complexes, as well as with those in polynuclear iron-sulfur compounds. This understanding of the iron coordination geometry is expected to assist in the design of synthetic analogues for intermediates in the nitrogenase catalytic cycle.

Symmetry operation measures

We introduce a new mathematical tool for quantifying the symmetry contents of molecular structures: the Symmetry Operation Measures. In this approach, we measure the minimal distance between a given structure and the structure which is obtained after applying a selected symmetry operation on it. If the given operation is a true symmetry operation for the structure, this distance is zero; otherwise it gives an indication of how different the transformed structure is from the original one. Specifically, we provide analytical solutions for measures of all the improper rotations, S n p, including mirror symmetry and inversion, as well as for all pure rotations, C n p. These measures provide information complementary to the Continuous Symmetry Measures (CSM) that evaluate the distance between a given structure and the nearest structure which belongs to a selected symmetry point-group.

New advances in homoleptic organotransition-metal compounds: The case of perhalophenyl ligands

Homoleptic derivatives of formula [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) (X = F, Cl) have been prepared and isolated for every first-row transition metal as well as for several of the heavier ones. The stoichiometry attained in each case (n ranging between 2 and 6) can be understood considering the tendency of a given metal ion to compensate its coordinative and electronic unsaturation, while not incurring severe interligand repulsive effects. The molecular structures associated with each stoichiometry seem, in turn, to be governed by electronic rather than steric factors. Most of these [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) compounds are unsaturated, open-shell organometallic species, not fulfilling the 18-electron (or Effective Atomic Number) rule. This behaviour can be attributed to the absence of pi stabilising ligands (such as CO, phosphines, alkenes, alkynes, a variety of substituted aromatic rings, and so on) which are otherwise ubiquitous in organotransition-metal chemistry. The magnetic properties of the [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) species have been determined by EPR spectroscopy and/or bulk magnetisation measurements. Excellent correlation between molecular geometry and magnetic properties (whether diamagnetic or paramagnetic) has been observed. Many of these compounds undergo chemically- or electrochemically-induced electron exchange processes. These redox reactions proceed without alteration in the stoichiometry of the [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) compound, but usually involve a sharp change in the molecular geometry according to the different electron configuration of the interrelated species.

Evidence for Increased Exchange Interactions with 5d Compared to 4d Metal Ions. Experimental and Theoretical Insights into the Ferromagnetic Interactions of a Series of Trinuclear [{M(CN)8}3-/NiII] Compounds (M = MoV or WV)

Two main questions are addressed in this study: (i) What increase of exchange interaction can be expected when replacing a paramagnetic metal ion with a heavier congener located farther down the periodic table (i.e., 3d-4d-5d), and (ii) for a molecular unit with higher coordination numbers, eight in the present case, how is the magnetic information transferred from the metal ion to its ligand set? Qualitative and quantitative investigations on a series of trimetallic cyano-bridged {MoV(CN)8-NiII} and {WV(CN)8-NiII} compounds revealed ferromagnetic interactions but with a strength modulated by the spin organization and their nature. DFT calculations have been used to examine the mechanism and strengths of the exchange coupling, as well as the influence of the local symmetry of the cyanometalate unit on the spin density distribution. Both the experimental and the calculated behaviors underline a noticeable difference between the Mo and the W derivatives (JMoNi = 26.9 cm(-1) and JWNi = 37.3 cm(-1)) that is correlated to the spin density transferred from the metal center to its ligand set. It is also shown that the shape of the {M(CN)8} polyhedron may lead to nonequivalent CN sites and, consequently, to different strengths of the exchange interaction as a result of the position of the bridging ligands.
