Abstract
The effects of tea polysaccharides (TPS) and polyphenols (TPP) on the growth inhibition of hepatoma H22 cells in mice including the roles of them in immune stimulation were investigated. The results showed that TPS and TPP both significantly inhibited the growth of H22 transplantable tumor in mice without statistical difference, both remarkably decreased the spleen index and increased the thymus index compared with that of model group (p<0.05). In addition, TPS and TPP significantly improved the splenocyte proliferation induced by ConA or LPS, and notably enhanced the macrophage phagocytosis towards neutral red. The comparison showed the effect of TPS on immune stimulation was superior to that of TPP to some extent.

Abstract
Both dose-dense and dose-escalation chemotherapy are administered in clinic. By approximately imitating the schedules of dose-dense and dose-escalation administration with paclitaxel, two novel multidrug resistant (MDR) cell lines Bads-200 and Bats-72 were successfully developed from drug-sensitive breast cancer cell line BCap37, respectively. Different from Bads-200, Bats-72 exhibited stable MDR and significantly enhanced migratory and invasive properties, indicating that they represented two different MDR phenotypes. Our results showed that distinct phenotypes of MDR could be induced by altered administration strategies with a same drug. Administrating paclitaxel in conventional dose-escalation schedule might induce recrudescent tumor cells with stable MDR and increased metastatic capacity.

Abstract
Many studies confirm that a majority of patients undergoing cancer therapy use self-selected forms of complementary therapies, mainly dietary supplements. Unfortunately, patients often do not report their use of supplements to their providers. The failure of physicians to communicate effectively with patients on this use may result in a loss of trust within the therapeutic relationship and in the selection by patients of harmful, useless, or ineffective and costly nonconventional therapies when effective integrative interventions may exist. Poor communication may also lead to diminishment of patient autonomy and self-efficacy and thereby interfere with the healing response. To be open to the patient's perspective, and sensitive to his or her need for autonomy and empowerment, physicians may need a shift in their own perspectives. Perhaps the optimal approach is to discuss both the facts and the uncertainty with the patient, in order to reach a mutually informed decision. Today's informed patients truly value physicians who appreciate them as equal participants in making their own health care choices. To reach a mutually informed decision about the use of these supplements, the Clinical Practice Committee of The Society of Integrative Oncology undertook the challenge of providing basic information to physicians who wish to discuss these issues with their patients. A list of leading supplements that have the best suggestions of benefit was constructed by leading researchers and clinicians who have experience in using these supplements. This list includes curcumin, glutamine, vitamin D, Maitake mushrooms, fish oil, green tea, milk thistle, Astragalus, melatonin, and probiotics. The list includes basic information on each supplement, such as evidence on effectiveness and clinical trials, adverse effects, and interactions with medications. The information was constructed to provide an up-to-date base of knowledge, so that physicians and other health care providers would be aware of the supplements and be able to discuss realistic expectations and potential benefits and risks.

Abstract
Today cancer is a leading cause of death among the developed countries. Its highly complex nature makes it difficult to understand as it entails multiple cellular physiological systems such as cell signaling and apoptosis. The biggest challenges faced by cancer chemoprevention/chemotherapy is maintaining drug circulation and avoiding multidrug resistance. Overall there is modest evidence regarding the protective effects of nutrients from supplements against a number of cancers. Numerous scientific literatures available advocate the use of polyphenols for chemoprevention. Some groups have also suggested use of combination of nutrients in cancer prevention. However, we have yet to obtain the desired results in the line of cancer chemotherapy research. Nanotechnology can play a pivotal role in cancer treatment and prevention. Moreover, nanoparticles can be modified in various ways to prolong circulation, enhance drug localization, increase drug efficacy, and potentially decrease the chances of multidrug resistance. In this communication, we will cover the use of various polyphenols and nutrients in cancer chemoprevention. The application of nanotechnology in this regard will also be included. In view of available reports on the potential of nanoparticles, we suggest their usage along with different combination of nutrients as cancer chemotherapeutic agents.

Abstract
In spite of the large number of botanicals demonstrating promise as potential cancer chemopreventive agents, most have failed to prove effectiveness in clinical trials. Critical requirements for moving botanical agents to recommendation for clinical use include adopting a systematic, molecular-target based approach and utilizing the same ethical and rigorous methods that are used to evaluate other pharmacological agents. Preliminary data on a mechanistic rationale for chemoprevention activity as observed from epidemiological, in vitro and preclinical studies, phase I data of safety in suitable cohorts, duration of intervention based on time to progression of pre-neoplastic disease to cancer and using a valid panel of biomarkers representing the hypothesized carcinogenesis pathway for measuring efficacy must inform the design of clinical trials. Botanicals have been shown to influence multiple biochemical and molecular cascades that inhibit mutagenesis, proliferation, induce apoptosis, suppress the formation and growth of human cancers, thus modulating several hallmarks of carcinogenesis. These agents appear promising in their potential to make a dramatic impact in cancer prevention and treatment, with a significantly superior safety profile than most agents evaluated to date. The goal of this paper is to provide models of translational research based on the current evidence of promising botanicals with a specific focus on targeted therapies for PCa chemoprevention.

Abstract
Apigenin (4',5,7-trihydroxyflavone, 5,7-dihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one) is a flavonoid found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs, the most abundant sources being the leafy herb parsley and dried flowers of chamomile. Present in dietary sources as a glycoside, it is cleaved in the gastrointestinal lumen to be absorbed and distributed as apigenin itself. For this reason, the epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract is exposed to higher concentrations of apigenin than tissues at other locations. This would also be true for epithelial cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. We consider the evidence for actions of apigenin that might hinder the ability of gastrointestinal cancers to progress and spread. Apigenin has been shown to inhibit cell growth, sensitize cancer cells to elimination by apoptosis, and hinder the development of blood vessels to serve the growing tumor. It also has actions that alter the relationship of the cancer cells with their microenvironment. Apigenin is able to reduce cancer cell glucose uptake, inhibit remodeling of the extracellular matrix, inhibit cell adhesion molecules that participate in cancer progression, and oppose chemokine signaling pathways that direct the course of metastasis into other locations. As such, apigenin may provide some additional benefit beyond existing drugs in slowing the emergence of metastatic disease.

Abstract
Cancer prevention research has drawn much attention worldwide. It is believed that some types of cancer can be prevented by following a healthy life style. Cancer chemoprevention by either natural or synthetic agents is a promising route towards lowering cancer incidence. In recent years, the concept of cancer chemoprevention has evolved greatly. Experimental studies in animal models demonstrate that the reversal or suppression of premalignant lesions by chemopreventive agents is achievable. Natural occurring agents such as dietary phytochemicals, tea polyphenols and resveratrol show chemopreventive activity in animal models. Moreover, clinical trials for testing the safety and efficacy of a variety of natural agents in preventing or treating human malignancy have been ongoing. Here, we summarize experimental data on the chemopreventive or tumor suppressive effects of several natural compounds including curcumin, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, resveratrol, indole-3-carbinol, and vitamin D.

Abstract
Since angiogenesis is critical for tumor growth and metastasis, anti-angiogenic treatment is a highly promising therapeutic approach. Thus, for over last couple of decades, there has been a robust activity aimed towards the discovery of angiogenesis inhibitors. More than forty anti-angiogenic drugs are being tested in clinical trials all over the world. This review discusses agents that have approved by the FDA and are currently in use for treating patients either as single-agents or in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents.

Abstract
One of the main reasons for cancer mortality is caused by the highly invasive behavior of cancer cells, which often due to aggressive metastasis. Metastasis is mediated by various growth factors and cytokines, operating through numerous signaling pathways. Remarkably, all these metastatic signaling pathways must enter the nucleus through a single gatekeeper, the nuclear pore complex (NPC). NPCs are the only gateway between the cytoplasm and the nucleus. NPCs are among the largest proteinaceous assemblies in the cell and are composed of multiple copies of around 30 different proteins called nucleoporins. Here, we review what is currently known about the NPC, and its role in the mechanisms of tumor progression. We will also explore potential strategies to target metastatic pathways by manipulating the karyopherins (importins/exportins) of nucleocytoplasmic traffic through NPCs.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the effects of treatment with arctigenin (ARG) on the adhesion, invasion, and metastasis of human hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC-7721 cells.
METHODS: After SMMC-7721 cells were treated with ARG, cell adherence, migration, and invasion were assessed by MTT assay and Transwell migration assay. A model of pulmonary metastasis of SMMC-7721 cells was then generated in nude mice to evaluate the effect of arctigenin on tumor cell metastasis.
RESULTS: The adhesion, migration, and invasion of SMMC-7721 cells were significantly inhibited after ARG treatment. Compared with control cells, the average reduced rates of adhesion, metastasis, and invasion in cells treated with ARG were 43.08%, 55.19% and 58.21%, respectively. ARG inhibited the adhesion of SMMC-7221 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner (72 h: 0.260 ± 0.014 vs 0.999 ± 0.066, P < 0.05; 4 h: 0.558 ± 0.026 vs 1.241 ± 0.102, P < 0.05). The number of metastatic pulmonary tumors in nude mice inoculated with arctigenin was lower than that in mice inoculated with control cells (62.5% vs 100%, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Treatment with arctigenin markedly inhibits the adherence, migration and invasion of SMMC-7721 cells.
