Abstract
We report here the synthetic procedure applied for the preparation of new AB3-type and trans-A2B2 type meso-halogenophenothiazinyl-phenyl-porphyrin derivatives, their metal core complexation and their peripheral modification using Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reactions with various (hetero)aryl (phenothiazinyl, 7-formyl-phenothiazinyl, (9-carbazolyl)-phenyl and 4-formyl-phenyl, phenyl) boronic acid derivatives. The meso-phenothiazinyl-phenyl-porphyrin (MPP) dyes family was thus extended by a series of novel phenothiazine-bridged porphyrin-(hetero)aryl dyads characterized by UV-Vis absorption/emission properties typical to the porphyrin chromophore, slightly modulated by increasing the size of peripheral substituents. Three phenothiazine-bridged porphyrin-heteroaryl dyads with fluorescence emission above 655 nm were selected as fluorophores in red spectral region for applications in cellular staining of human ovarian tumors. In vitro experiments of cell metabolic activity displayed a moderate toxicity on human ovarian tumor cell lines (OVCAR-3, cisplatin-sensitive A2780 and cisplatin-resistant A2780cis respectively). Visualization of the stained living cells was performed both by fluorescence microscopy imaging and by fluorescence lifetime imaging under two photon excitation (TPE-FLIM), confirming their cellular uptake and the capability of staining the cell nucleus.

Abstract
Visible light irradiation of photo-labile porphyrin-manganese(III) chlorates or bromates (2) produced manganese(IV)-oxo porphyrins [MnIV(Por)(O)] (Por = porphyrin) (3) in three porphyrin ligands. The same oxo species 3 were also formed by chemical oxidation of the corresponding manganese(III) precursors (1) with iodobenzene diacetate, i.e. PhI(OAc)2. The systems under study include 5,10,15,20-tetra(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin‑manganese(IV)-oxo (3a), 5,10,15,20-tetra(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrin‑manganese(IV)-oxo (3b), and 5,10,15,20-tetramesitylporphyrin‑manganese(IV)-oxo (3c). As expected, complexes 3 reacted with thioanisoles to produce the corresponding sulfoxides and over-oxidized sulfones. The kinetics of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reactions of these generated 3 with aryl sulfides were studied in CH3CN solutions. Second-order rate constants for sulfide oxidation reactions are comparable to those of alkene epoxidations and activated CH bond oxidations by the same oxo species 3. For a given substrate, the reactivity order for the manganese(IV)-oxo species was 3a > 3b > 3c, consistent with expectations on the basis of the electron-withdrawing capacity of the porphyrin macrocycles. Free-energy Hammett analyses gave near-linear correlations with σ values, indicating no significant positive charge developed at the sulfur during the oxidation process. The mechanistic results strongly suggest [MnIV(Por)(O)] reacts as a direct OAT agent towards sulfide substrates through a manganese(II) intermediate that was detected in this work. However, an alternative pathway that involves a disproportionation of 3 to form a higher oxidized manganese(V)-oxo species may be significant when less reactive substrates are present. The competition product studies with the Hammett correlation plot confirmed that the observed manganese(IV)-oxo species is not the true oxidant for the sulfide oxidations catalyzed by manganese(III) porphyrins with PhI(OAc)2.

Abstract
A series of novel porphyrin-cinnamic acid (porphyrin/CA) conjugates (4a-4c) have been synthesized by condensation of 5-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl- porphyrin (1) with different substituted cinnamic acids (CAs) through an alkyl linker due to the biological activities of CAs and the application of porphyrins in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. Their related zinc (II) complexes (5a-5c) were also prepared. These novel compounds have been fully characterized by 1H NMR, Infrared (IR), Mass spectra (Ms) and Elemental analysis. The photophysical properties of these target molecules were studied by absorption and Fluorescence spectroscopy. In solution, the effect of pH, ionic strength in acid media and concentration on the aggregation behaviors of 4a has also been investigated by UV-Vis spectra. The broadened and red shifted Soret band indicated the formation of J-aggregates when the pH value was up to 2.0 in THF-aqueous solution. Furthermore, the higher ionic strength of 0.3 M NaCl in acid media resulted in the generation of J-aggregates in THF-aqueous solution. And the significant blue shift of Soret band also demonstrated the formation of H-aggregates of 4a at 1.1 × 10-4 M in THF.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterisation and homogeneous catalytic oxidation results of two manganese(III) porphyrins of the so-called second-generation of metalloporphyrin catalysts, containing one or four 3,5-dichloropyridyl substituents at the meso positions are reported for the first time. The catalytic efficiency of these novel manganese(III) porphyrins was evaluated in the oxidation of cyclooctene and styrene using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant, under homogeneous conditions. High conversions were obtained in the presence of both catalysts, obtaining the corresponding epoxide as the major product. The asymmetric metalloporphyrin, chloro[5,10,15-tris(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-20-(3,5-dichloropyridin-4-yl)porphyrinate]manganese(III), CAT-4, evidences a similar activity to that obtained with the well-known and highly efficient second-generation metalloporphyrin catalyst, chloro[5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrinate]manganese(III), CAT-2. CAT-4 was covalently attached onto Merrifield resin and 3-bromopropylsilica supports. The solid materials obtained were characterized by several techniques including diffuse reflectance, UV—VIS spectrophotometry, SEM and XPS. The catalytic results for the oxidation of cyclooctene and styrene using the immobilized catalysts are also presented. The Merrifield-supported catalyst showed to be very efficient, leading to five catalytic cycles in the oxidation of cyclooctene, using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis of 5,10,15,20-tetraaryl-(X)-substituted-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrins (OETArXPs) and a structural investigation of their solid-state properties via small molecule X-ray diffraction. A series of halogen (fluorine to iodine), nitrogenous (azido, cyano), alkyl (TMS-acetylene and acetylene), and chained (benzyloxy) porphyrins were chosen as the initial target molecules. Following this, a selection of tetravalent metal complexes [Cu(II), Ni(II), and Pd(II)] based on these porphyrins were synthesized to allow for an investigation of the effects of metal complexes on the structural properties of these highly substituted porphyrins. The size of the halogen atom affects the potential of intermolecular interactions and the resulting crystal packing in these 4-halo-OETArXP complexes. The fluorine series have an equal preference for alkyl or aryl groups (ortho-hydrogen), the chlorine series favor interactions between the alkyl groups, and the bromine appears to favor the aryl (ortho- and meta-hydrogens). This results in an extensive cupping pattern in the unit cell. For the 2,6-halo-OETArXP it was established that the change in position alters the types of the intermolecular contacts toward face-to-edge or face-to-face interactions and alters the packing patterns observed. Within the 4-benzyloxy-OETArXP series the meso-substituent favors interacting with the core of the porphyrin macrocycle. The 4-cyano-OETArXP is a suitable hydrogen-bond acceptor and results in an interesting Z-shape network. Additionally, it was highlighted that solvent effects play a much larger role in crystal packing than intermolecular/intramolecular interaction or metal(II) center substitution. This is accompanied by a study using both the azide- and acetylene-OETArXPs as a base molecule to allow for a quick one-step reaction for the generation of a variety of functionalized compounds. Using a copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction, we were able to append hydrogen bonding functionalities to the OETArXPs framework in high yields. The crystal packing images included in this work shows the potential to create selective and functional receptor sites based on free base porphyrins. However, insofar as analytical measurements indicate, the design of such a free base porphyrin through crystal engineering has not yet been realized. The variety of porphyrin packing arrangements herein indicates the need for further studies.

Abstract
Norfloxacin (NOR) is a synthetic broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic classified as an emerging contaminant. Here, we investigate Mn(III) porphyrin-catalyzed NOR degradation using peroxides or peracids (H2O2, t-BuOOH, or Oxone®) as oxidants. We evaluate three Mn(III) porphyrins: the 1st-generation tetraphenylporphyrin and 2nd -generation porphyrins bearing halogen atoms at the ortho-positions of the porphyrin macrocycle meso-aryl groups. Experiments were carried out in aqueous medium under mild conditions. NOR degradation was 67%. Products were proposed by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Oxone® was the best oxidant for NOR degradation despite its possible decomposition in the reaction medium. The second-generation Mn(III) porphyrins were more resistant than the first-generation Mn(III) porphyrin, indicating that the bulky groups introduced into the porphyrin macrocycle meso-aryl groups led to more robust catalysts. The degradation products did not present cytotoxic behavior under the employed conditions. In conclusion, Mn(III) porphyrin-catalyzed NOR degradation is a promising strategy to degrade fluoroquinolones and other pollutants.

Abstract
Condensation of pyrrole with various aldehydes in the presence of BF3•etherate as an acid catalyst in water provides good yield of some dipyrromethanes. Prolongation of the reaction time with aldehydes substituted by electron-donating (mesityl) or electron-withdrawing (2,6-dichlorophenyl) groups on the ortho positions of the phenyl did not lead to decomposition or scrambling. Manganese trans disubstituted porphyrin complexes which derive from various dipyrromethanes and manganese tetraaryl porphyrin complexes including various substituents with different steric and electronic properties show good catalytic activity in epoxidation of alkenes by NaIO4in the presence of imidazole (ImH). The study of steric and electronic effects of the catalysts on the epoxidation of olefins shows that Mn-porphyrin complexes with more bulky and electron-releasing groups on meso phenyls could increase the epoxidation yield of most alkenes.

Abstract
Cancer and bacterial diseases have been the most incidental diseases to date. According to the World Health Report 2018, at least every family is affected by cancer around the world. In 2012, 14.1 million people were affected by cancer, and that figure is bound to increase to 21.6 million in 2030. Medicine therefore sorts out ways of treatment using conventional methods which have been proven to have many side effects. Researchers developed photothermal and photodynamic methods to treat both cancer and bacterial diseases. These methods pose fewer effects on the biological systems but still no perfect method has been synthesized. The review serves to explore porphyrin and gold nanorods to be used in the treatment of cancer and bacterial diseases: porphyrins as photosensitizers and gold nanorods as delivery agents. In addition, the review delves into ways of incorporating photothermal and photodynamic therapy aimed at producing a less toxic, more efficacious, and specific compound for the treatment.

Abstract
Plasmon-enhanced light harvesting has been of great interest to enhance the catalytic efficiency of some composites or hybrids. The enhanced peroxidase-like activity of phosphorylated iron(III) porphyrin (TPPFe(III))-based nanocomposite, induced by localized surface plasmon resonance for a colorimetric assay, was developed in this study. Firstly, a phosphate group modification strategy was adopted to synthesize water-soluble iron(III) porphyrin materials. Then, the as-synthesized TPPFe(III) was covalently attached to core-shell gold nanorods (GNRs), GNR@Au2S/AuAgS, to form TPPFe(III)-GNR@Au2S/AuAgS nanocomposite, which shows greatly enhanced peroxidase-like activity compared to TPPFe(III). A mechanism for the enhanced peroxidase-like activity of TPPFe(III)-GNR@Au2S/AuAgS was proposed, which results from a synergic effect of hot electrons excited by localized surface plasmon resonance and photogenerated electrons of the TPPFe(III), verified by experiments. Furthermore, a fast colorimetric assay for the detection of H2O2 and glucose was established based on the unique property of TPPFe(III)-GNR@Au2S/AuAgS. This colorimetric assay was applied to determine practical human serum samples; satisfactory results demonstrate this method has high accuracy. The present study would not only provide some insights into the mechanism of plasmon-activated enzyme-like reactions, but also offer new strategies for improving the catalytic activity of a mimetic enzyme.

Abstract
Three generations of cobalt porphyrins were synthesized, physicochemically characterized by FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry and applied as catalysts in the oxidation of cycloalkanes with atmospheric molecular oxygen under mild conditions. All examined catalysts were active in the tested reaction, and their catalytic activity varied with the nature and number of substituents on the porphyrin ring. Introduction of electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents at the porphyrin rings increases the activity of metalloporphyrin complexes. It was found, for the first time, that generation II cobalt porphyrins show higher activity in cycloalkane oxidation than cobalt porphyrins of generation III. The lower catalytic activity of generation III cobalt porphyrins can be attributed to the saddle-shaped deformation of the porphyrin macrocycle. DFT modeling of Co porphyrins and their interactions with molecular oxygen provided explanations for the observed effects. On the basis of prior reports and the obtained results, a reaction mechanism is proposed and discussed.

Abstract
Fungal denitrification plays a crucial role in the nitrogen cycle and contributes to the total N2O emission from agricultural soils. Here, cytochrome P450 NO reductase (P450nor) reduces two NO to N2O using a single heme site. Despite much research, the exact nature of the critical "Intermediate I" responsible for the key N-N coupling step in P450nor is unknown. This species likely corresponds to a Fe-NHOH-type intermediate with an unknown electronic structure. Here we report a new strategy to generate a model system for this intermediate, starting from the iron(III) methylhydroxylamide complex [Fe(3,5-Me-BAFP)(NHOMe)] (1), which was fully characterized by 1H NMR, UV-vis, electron paramagnetic resonance, and vibrational spectroscopy (rRaman and NRVS). Our data show that 1 is a high-spin ferric complex with an N-bound hydroxylamide ligand that is strongly coordinated (Fe-N distance, 1.918 Å; Fe-NHOMe stretch, 558 cm-1). Simple one-electron oxidation of 1 at -80 °C then cleanly generates the first model system for Intermediate I, [Fe(3,5-Me-BAFP)(NHOMe)]+ (1+). UV-vis, resonance Raman, and Mössbauer spectroscopies, in comparison to the chloro analogue [Fe(3,5-Me-BAFP)(Cl)]+, demonstrate that 1+ is best described as an FeIII-(NHOMe)• complex with a bound NHOMe radical. Further reactivity studies show that 1+ is highly reactive toward NO, a reaction that likely proceeds via N-N bond formation, following a radical-radical-type coupling mechanism. Our results therefore provide experimental evidence, for the first time, that an FeIII-(NHOMe)• electronic structure is indeed a reasonable electronic description for Intermediate I and that this electronic structure is advantageous for P450nor catalysis because it can greatly facilitate N-N bond formation and, ultimately, N2O generation.

Abstract
Controlled switching of the spin state of transition metal ions, particularly of FeII and FeIII, is a prerequisite to achieve selectivity, efficiency, and catalysis in a number of metalloenzymes. Here we report on an iron(III) porphyrin with a photochromic axial ligand which, upon irradiation with two different wavelengths reversibly switches its spin state between low-spin (S = 1/2) and high-spin (S = 5/2) in solution (DMSO-acetone, 2:598). The switching efficiency is 76% at room temperature. The system is neither oxygen nor water sensitive, and no fatigue was observed after more than 1000 switching cycles. Concomitant with the spin-flip is a change in redox potential by ~60 mV. Besides serving as a simple model for the first step of the cytochrome P450 catalytic cycle, the spin switch can be used to switch the spin-lattice relaxation time T1 of the water protons by a factor of 15. Controlled switching of the spin state of transition metal ions is key in many enzymatic reactions, but difficult to replicate in synthetic systems. Here the authors report on an iron(III) porphyrin with a photochromic axial ligand that, in solution, reversibly switches between low-spin and high-spin upon irradiation with two different wavelengths.

Abstract
The predominant distortion of heme is responsible for its electronic activity, catalytic ability and spectral properties. In this work, altogether 12 new X-ray structures of saddled, waved and ruffled porphyrins are reported. Three types of deformed porphyrins as mimics of heme were evaluated and analyzed by geometric deconstruction, spectral comparison, and electrochemical tracking, which shows a unique relationship of deformation fashions and distortion degree to the geometry of the core and electron transfer ability of rings in these enzyme containing porphyrins. These mimics can adjust their core geometry for changing the structures of potential metals; while for rings themselves, they can also regulate the electron activity by switching the HOMO of the large π systems. These deformed porphyrins can be used as ideal mimics for heme. These findings help us to understand the principle and contribution of these deformations to electron transfer in catalytic oxidation and photoreactions. The nonplanar mimics have been synthesized through a modular synthetic approach under Adler-Longo or Lindsey condensation conditions.

Abstract
A heterogenized meso-tetrakis(2,3-dihydroxyphenyl)porphyrinatomanganese(III) acetate at zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (T(2,3-OHP)PorMn@ZIF-8) is investigated for the catalytic olefin epoxidation reactions at room temperature. Heterogenization is accomplished through a non-classical hydrogen bond proposed between T(2,3-OHP)PorMn bearing O–H groups and C–H of the 2-methylimidazolate linkers in the ZIF-8 structure. The aforementioned compound is characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), nitrogen adsorption−desorption, FT-IR spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The catalytic system with rather high potential of reusability is proposed as a fairly efficient epoxidation catalyst compared to reports in homogeneous media.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) possesses intracellular amidase activity, which catalyses the hydrolysis of short aliphatic amides producing NH4+, and has already been used along with an ammonium ion selective electrode for amide quantification. However, the incorporation of a biological membrane turned to be a challenging process and either the final arrangement was prone to amidase losses or the recovery of the sensor coating after the interaction took too long. In this article a flow injection system with an ammonium acoustic wave sensor is proposed, and after testing several different arrangements for the biological element, the ultimate choice consisted of the immobilization of a P. aeruginosa cell-free extract in the inner wall of a tubular glass reactor, which resulted in a reliable analytical system. Response times less than one minute and complete recovery in less than two minutes assured conveniently fast analysis. The analytical system, as long as the column was properly stored in HEPES buffer containing 2 mM β-mercaptoethanol and 1 mM benzamidine and refrigerated when not in use, could be used at least for 20 working days, along a period of one month, maintaining the initial sensitivity.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of N-confused 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl porphyrin derivatives have been studied using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The peripherally substituted N-confused 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl free-base porphyrins (NCTPPs) show stronger B-band absorptions in DCM than in DMAc, while much stronger emissions have been observed in DMAc, which may be due to the shorter times (τIC) of internal conversion from the B-band to the Q-band. The Q-band spectral structures of NCTPPs in DCM are significantly different from those in DMAc. The introduction of ortho-OCH3 results in the strongest emission in both DCM and DMAc and significant fluorescence after N-methylation even though the emissions of other N-methyl complexes are quenched. The N-methylation of NCTPPs leads to a larger τIC and shorter emission lifetime. The excited-state dynamics of manganese(iii) N-confused porphyrins (Mn(Cl)NCH3NCTPPs) are influenced by both peripheral substituents and manganese(iii) metal ion, and exhibit ultrafast intersystem crossing processes.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II) 5-(4[Formula: see text]-sulfanylmethylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (Ru-TPP-SH) and manganese(III) 5-(4[Formula: see text]-sulfanylmethylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (Mn-TPP-SH) were synthesized, spectroscopically characterized and drop casted to modify screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). The modified SPEs were then tested against the redox target [Fe(CN)6][Formula: see text] in comparison with the bare SPE and SPE modified with the free porphyrin. The best performing one, [Formula: see text]. Mn-TPP-SH was used for the electrochemical detection of 1,4–benzoquinone, serotonin, caffeic and ascorbic acids, the latter also in association with uric acid, showing good electrocatalytic properties. The tunability of the metal-TPP-SH through the choice of the coordinating metal, the drop casting conditions and possible further functionalization make this type of porphyrin a good candidate for further developments of porphyrin-modified SPEs.
