Abstract
With the aim of evaluating the effect of restricted suckling on the onset of follicular dynamics and body condition, multiparous Bos indicus cows were distributed in two groups. One group (RS=36) was subjected to a scheme of restricted suckling starting at 21 days postpartum. Calves were allowed to suckle once per day for a period of two h whilst the control group (C=18) remained with their dams at all times. At calving, body condition score, back fat thickness and body weight had similar values (p>0.05) for both groups. By day 85 postpartum both groups had recorded losses in body weight. The cows in the continuous group formed a greater (p<0.05) number of follicles of class size <6mm in both periods before and after synchronization. The proportion of cows showing estrus and ovulation before 45 days, was not different (p>0.05). The number of cows that exhibited estrus after 45 days, was greater (p<0.05) in RS than C group, 72.2% and 55.5%, respectively. Same situation (p<0.05) occurred in cows that ovulated, 88.8 and 66.7%, for groups RS and C, respectively. The subset in the intensive observations showed that the size of the bigger follicle was larger (p<0.05) for RS cows than C cows from 36 h after CIDR withdrawal. At 57 h, the size of the biggest follicle recorded was not different between groups (p>0.05). A regime of restricted suckling favors the earlier growth of follicles and the prompt restoration of ovarian activity.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of an energy supplementation, 26 postpartum Bos indicus cows were assigned either to receive an energy diet supplementation (n = 11, SSD) or no supplementation (n = 15, NSSD). Cows in the SSD treatment received a diet consisting of 5.5% crude protein, 2.85 Mcal digestible energy per head per day, at 1% ratio of the average bodyweight, started 23.5 ± 3.4 days after calving and continued for 44 days. In contrast, NSSD cows were grazing only native pastures during the experiment. All cows were synchronised at 65 days postpartum with a subcutaneous progestin ear implant (Norgestomet) for 9 days and an injection of oestradiol valerate and Norgestomet at the same time as implant placement. A random sample of six animals from each treatment was scanned with ultrasound every 6 h and the dominant follicle (s) was measured until ovulation occurred or after 114 h. The nadir of body condition score for the NSSD was observed at 37.5 ± 3.4 days postpartum, while SSD was at 22.3 ± 7.9 days (P < 0.01); no differences (P > 0.05) in dorsal backfat thickness or average bodyweight between treatments were observed. During the ultrasound-scanning period, four of six cows ovulated in the SSD treatment and five of six in the NSSD. No difference (P > 0.05) was observed at the time of ovulation after progestin implant withdrawal (55.8 ± 7.8 h in NSSD vs 94.5 ± 21.7 h in SSD). The largest follicle diameter at the beginning of the scanning was in SSD treatment (7.25 ± 1.4 mm in SSD vs 5.0 ± 0.8 mm in NSSD), whereas at the time of ovulation, it was similar (15.2 ± 1.8 mm in SSD vs 11.0 ± 1.4 mm in NSSD) between the treatments (P > 0.05). The resumption of ovarian activity was similar between SSD (69 ± 20.7 days, ranging from 42 to 83 days) and NSSD (69.8 ± 6.4 days, ranging from 59 to 73 days). The length of postpartum anoestrus was influenced by the onset of the nadir of body condition score. Energy diet supplementation did not influence the onset of ovarian activity.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the effects and the interaction of size of the preovulatory follicle (POF) and long-acting progesterone (P4) supplementation after timed-AI on CL function and pregnancy success in beef cows. In experiment 1, ovulations of beef cows were synchronized starting on Day -10, and cows were split to receive sodium cloprostenol (large follicle group; LF; n = 31) or nothing (small follicle group; SF; n = 35). Ovulations were induced on Day 0, and cows were inseminated. Ovulated cows were assigned to receive placebo (LF/control group, n = 14; and SF/control group, n = 9) or 150 mg of long-acting P4 on Day 4.5 (LF/P4 group, n = 13; and SF/P4 group, n = 12). Diameter of POF, blood flow in POF wall, ovulation rate, and size and vascularization of CL were greater (P < 0.05) in LF group. In experiments 2 (unknown cyclic status) and 4 (noncycling), ovulations were synchronized, and beef cows received placebo or 150 mg of long-acting P4 on Day 4 after timed-artificial insemination. In experiment 2, pregnancy/AI (P/AI) did not differ (P > 0.1) between P4-treated (53.2%; 209/393) and control cows (56.2%; 219/390), but P/AI was greater in cows with a CL < 0.9 cm(2) on Day 4 that were P4-treated (57.9%, 22/38) versus placebo-treated (40.4%, 21/52; P < 0.05). In Experiment 4, P/AI was greater (P < 0.05) in P4-treated cows (55.6%, 105/189 vs. 46.0%, 86/187). In Experiment 3, cyclic-suckled beef cows were treated as described in Experiment 1 to generate animals with small (SF; n = 111) or large POF (LF; n = 109), and subdivided to receive placebo or P4 on Day 4. POF size, ovulation rate, CL area, and P/AI were greater (P < 0.007) in the LF group. Pregnancy/AI in ovulated cows were lower (P = 0.05) in the SF/control group (41.5%, 17/41) compared to LF/control group (62%, 31/50) and were similar for the SF/P4 group (55.6%, 25/45) and LF/P4 group (57%, 28/49) compared to others. In summary, smaller and less vascularized POF results in less functional CL and reduces ovulatory rate and P/AI in cyclic beef cows; the long-acting P4 injection on Day 4 after timed-artificial insemination may attenuate the negative effects of small POF/CL; and postovulatory P4 supplementation improved fertility in anestrous beef cattle.

Abstract
In areas where soils are deficient in selenium (Se), dietary supplementation of this trace mineral directly to cattle is recommended. Selenium status affects fertility, and the form of Se supplemented to cows affects tissue-specific gene expression profiles. The objective of this study was to determine whether the form of Se consumed by cows would affect follicular growth and the production of steroids. Thirty-three Angus-cross cows that had ad libitum access of a mineral mix containing 35 ppm of Se in free-choice vitamin-mineral mixes as either inorganic (ISe), organic (OSe), or a 50/50 mix of ISe and OSe (MIX) for 180 days were used. After 170 days of supplementation, all cows were injected with 25-mg PGF2α to induce regression of the CL and then monitored for behavioral estrus (Day 0). From Day 4 to Day 8 after estrus, follicular growth was determined by transrectal ultrasonography. On Day 6, cows were injected with PGF2α (20 then 15 mg, 8-12 hours apart) to induce regression of the developing CL and differentiation of the dominant follicle of the first follicular wave into a preovulatory follicle. On Day 8, 36 hours after PGF2α (20 mg), the contents of the preovulatory follicle were aspirated by ultrasound-guided follicular puncture. Blood collected on Days 6 and 8 and follicular fluid collected on Day 8 was analyzed for concentrations of progesterone and estradiol. Form of Se supplemented to cows affected (P = 0.04) the systemic concentration of progesterone on Day 6, but not on Day 8. Form of Se did not affect the systemic concentration of estradiol on Day 6 or Day 8. Form of Se tended to affect (P = 0.07) the concentration of progesterone, but not that of estradiol, in the follicular fluid. Form of Se did not affect diameter of the dominant ovarian follicle on Days 4 to 6, but tended to affect (P = 0.08) the diameter of the preovulatory follicle on Day 8. Our results suggest that form of Se fed to cows affects the production of progesterone but not that of estradiol. Further investigation of organic Se-induced increases in progesterone and potentially the effects of increased progesterone on the establishment of pregnancy, especially in cows of lower fertility, is warranted.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether changing the interval from CIDR removal to timed artificial insemination (TAI) according to the diameter of the preovulatory follicle (POF) would improve pregnancy per AI in cows. In Study 1, a retrospective analysis of TAI experiments (n=96 cows) was performed to characterize the time of ovulation according to the diameter of the dominant follicle. It was observed that cows with a larger POF had ovulations earlier than cows with smaller POF, according to the equation: y=0.72x(2)-26.74x+264.54 (R(2)=0.63; P<0.001). In Study 2, lactating Nelore cows (n=412) were subjected to an EB-CIDR based TAI protocol. On the morning of Day 10 (time of TAI), cows were randomized into Control (n=209) and Block (n=203) groups; (1) Cows in the Control Group were TAI 48 h after CIDR removal (08:00 am on Day 10), and; (2) Cows in the block group were inseminated once at one of the following time points, according to the diameter of the POF on Day 10: B0 (POF≥15mm, TAI 0 h after convetional TAI), B1 (POF 13-14.9 mm, TAI 6h later), B2 (POF 10.1-12.9 mm, TAI 24h later) and B3 (POF≤10mm, TAI 30 h later). The cows of the Block Group had greater pregnancy rates per AI than the Control Group (129/203, 63.5% when compared with 102/209, 48.8%, respectively; P<0.01). In conclusion, results of the present study demonstrate that adjusting the timing of TAI according to the diameter of the POF can be an effective practice for improving fertility of cows in TAI protocols.

Abstract
Pregnancy rates (PR) to fixed-time AI (FTAI) in Brahman heifers were compared after treatment with a traditional oestradiol-based protocol (OPO-8) or a modified protocol (OPO-6) where the duration of intravaginal progesterone releasing device (IPRD) was reduced from 8 to 6 days, and the interval from IPRD removal to oestradiol benzoate (ODB) was increased from 24 to 36 h. Rising 2 yo heifers on Farm A: (n = 238 and n = 215; two consecutive days AI); B (n = 271); and C (n = 393) were allocated to OPO-8 or OPO-6. An IPRD was inserted and 1mg ODB i.m. on Day 0 for OPO-8 heifers and Day 2 for OPO-6 heifers. On Day 8, the IPRD was removed and 500 μg cloprostenol i.m. At 24h, for OPO-8 heifers, and 36 h, for OPO-6 heifers, post IPRD removal all heifers received 1mg ODB i.m. FTAI was conducted at 54 and 72 h post IPRD removal for OPO-8 and OPO-6 heifers. At Farm A, OPO-6 heifers, AI on the second day, the PR was 52.4% to FTAI (P = 0.024) compared to 36.8% for OPO-8 heifers. However, no differences were found between OPO-8 and OPO-6 protocols at Farm A (first day of AI) (39.9 vs. 35.7%), or Farms B (26.2 vs. 35.4%) and C (43.2% vs. 40.3%). Presence of a corpus luteum at IPRD insertion affected PR to FTAI (43.9% vs. 28.8%; P < 0.001). This study has shown that the modified ovulation synchronisation protocol OPO-6 may be a viable alternative to the OPO-8 protocol for FTAI in B. indicus heifers.

Abstract
This study aimed to characterize the endometrial transcriptome and functional pathways overrepresented in the endometrium of cows treated to ovulate larger (≥13 mm) versus smaller (≤12 mm) follicles. Nelore cows were presynchronized prior to receiving cloprostenol (large follicle [LF] group) or not (small follicle [SF] group), along with a progesterone (P4) device on Day (D) -10. Devices were withdrawn and cloprostenol administered 42-60 h (LF) or 30-36 h (SF) before GnRH agonist treatment (D0). Tissues were collected on D4 (experiment [Exp.] 1; n = 24) or D7 (Exp. 2; n = 60). Endometrial transcriptome was obtained by RNA-Seq, whereas proliferation and apoptosis were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Overall, LF cows developed larger follicles and corpora lutea, and produced greater amounts of estradiol (D-1, Exp. 1, SF: 0.7 ± 0.2; LF: 2.4 ± 0.2 pg/ml; D-1, Exp. 2, SF: 0.5 ± 0.1; LF: 2.3 ± 0.6 pg/ml) and P4 (D4, Exp. 1, SF: 0.8 ± 0.1; LF: 1.4 ± 0.2 ng/ml; D7, Exp. 2, SF: 2.5 ± 0.4; LF: 3.7 ± 0.4 ng/ml). Functional enrichment indicated that biosynthetic and metabolic processes were enriched in LF endometrium, whereas SF endometrium transcriptome was biased toward cell proliferation. Data also suggested reorganization of the extracellular matrix toward a proliferation-permissive phenotype in SF endometrium. LF endometrium showed an earlier onset of proliferative activity, whereas SF endometrium expressed a delayed increase in glandular epithelium proliferation. In conclusion, the periovulatory endocrine milieu regulates bovine endometrial transcriptome and seems to determine the transition from a proliferation-permissive to a biosynthetic and metabolically active endometrial phenotype, which may be associated with the preparation of an optimally receptive uterine environment.

Abstract
Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do número de utilizações (até três) do CIDRÒ, manifestação de estro e ordem de parição sobre a taxa de prenhez em vacas Bos indicus. Utilizou-se 1176 vacas pluríparas e primíparas, lactantes, 30 a 60 dias pós-parto. Os grupos receberam CIDRÒ de primeiro, segundo ou terceiro usos, mais 2,0 mg de benzoato de estradiol no dia de introdução (D0) e, 500 μg de dinoprost trometamina, 300 UI de eCG e 0,6 mg de cipionato de estradiol na retirada dos dispositivos (D8), com a IATF 48 horas após (D10). Em 30 dias realizou-se o diagnóstico de gestação (D40). Analisaram-se as variáveis pelo PROC LOGISTIC (SAS) e pela regressão logística binária, considerando-se significância quando p < 0,05. A quantidade de usos do implante influenciou a taxa de gestação (1 uso < 2 usos – p<0,05; 1 uso < 3 usos – p < 0,01; 2 usos = 3 usos; p > 0,1), de 44,8%, 51,1% e 51,1% para CIDRÒ 1, 2 e 3 usos, respectivamente, bem como a ordem de parição (pluríparas 50,85% > primíparas 34,48%; p<0,01), e manifestação de estro (com estro 44,02% > sem estro 33,06%; p<0,01). O CIDRÒ pode ser utilizado por até três vezes, mas as taxas de gestação mostram-se mais baixas no primeiro uso em relação ao segundo e terceiro usos e com melhores resultados em pluríparas e com manifestação de estro.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of new or used P4 devices on the ovarian responses of dairy buffalo that were administered an estradiol (E2) plus progesterone (P4)-based timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol during the breeding season. On the first day of the TAI protocol, 142 cows were randomly assigned to receive one of the following: a new device (New; 1.0 g of P4; n = 48); a device that had previously been used for 9 days (Used1x, n = 47); or a device that had previously been used for 18 days (Used2x, n = 47). Ultrasound was used to evaluate the following: the presence of a corpus luteum (CL); the diameter of the dominant follicle (ØDF) during protocol; ovulatory response; and pregnancies per AI (P/AI). Despite similar responses among the treatments, there was a significant positive association of the ØDF during TAI protocol with ovulatory responses and number of pregnancies. In conclusion, satisfactory ovarian responses and a satisfactory pregnancy rate were achieved when grazing dairy buffalo were subjected to the TAI protocol in breeding season, independent of whether a new or used P4 device was used. Furthermore, the presence of the larger follicle was associated with a higher ovulation rate and higher P/AI following TAI.

Abstract
Abstract:Two ultrasound based fertility prediction methods were tested prior to embryo transfer (ET) and artificial insemination (AI) in cattle. Female bovines were submitted to estrous synchronization prior to ET and AI. Animals were scanned immediately before ET and AI procedure to target follicle and corpus luteum (CL) size and vascularity. In addition, inseminated animals were also scanned eleven days after insemination to target CL size and vascularity. All data was compared with fertility by using gestational diagnosis 35 days after ovulation. Prior to ET, CL vascularity showed a positive correlation with fertility, and no pregnancy occurred in animals with less than 40% of CL vascularity. Prior to AI and also eleven days after AI, no relationship with fertility was seen in all parameters analyzed (follicle and CL size and vascularity), and contrary, cows with CL vascularity greater than 70% exhibit lower fertility. In inseminated animals, follicle size and vascularity was positive related with CL size and vascularity, as shown by the presence of greater CL size and vascularity originated from follicle with also greater size and vascularity. This is the first time that ultrasound based fertility prediction methods were tested prior to ET and AI and showed an application in ET, but not in AI programs. Further studies are needed including hormone profile evaluation to improve conclusion.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to establish if pre-synchronization would enhance the number of animals cycling prior to conventional breeding at 45 days irrespective of the length of calf separation. Multiparous Bos indicus cows were allotted in four groups (n = 10). Control group (C) dams remained with their calves; groups G24, G48 and G72, which were partially weaned for 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively, were estrus synchronized using a controlled internal drug. These procedures were performed at 25 days and again at 45 days postpartum. The number of follicles, presence of a corpus luteum and back fat thickness (BFT) were determined by ultrasound. The proportion of cows with estrus and ovulation at day 25 postpartum was statistically different between the control and treated groups, with the values being 20, 60, 50 and 70 for the control, G24, G48 and G72 groups respectively (P < 0.05). At days 45 postpartum, the proportion of cows with estrus and ovulation
was different in group G48 compared with the other groups (P <0.05). The average BFT and body condition score for the four experimental groups in the two periods were similar (P >0.05). Animals with a higher proportion of follicles from 17 to 21 mm, BFT values above 3.5 mm and a regular body condition were significantly different regardless of whether the dams remained with their calves or were separated, regardless of the length of this event. It can be concluded that (1) a pre-synchronization program at day 25 could trigger the onset of ovarian activity and facilitate a breeding program at day 50 and (2) temporary weaning enhances the effect of a pre-synchronization program.

Abstract
Plasma estradiol and progesterone (P4) concentrations during the peri-ovulatory period are positively correlated with pregnancy success in cattle. The aims of this study were to assess the effects of estrus occurrence and early diestrus P4 concentrations on pregnancy per timed-embryo transfer (P/TET). A total of 267 crossbred beef heifers [222 with corpus luteum (CL) and 45 without a CL but with a follicle >8mm at beginning of the estrous synchronization protocol) received an intra-vaginal P4 device and intramuscular administration of estradiol benzoate. Progesterone devices were removed 8 days later (Day 0), and heifers received d-cloprostenol, eCG and estradiol cypionate. Estrous behavior was monitored twice daily for 3 days after P4 device removal. Plasma P4 concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay at Day 7 and Day 9. At Day 9, heifers with a CL (n=236; i.e. submission rate of 85.5%; 236/276) undergoing TET received an in vitro-produced embryo. Heifers expressing a standing behavioral estrus had a greater P/TET than heifers that did not express a standing estrus [62.4% (106/170) compared with 47.0% (31/66)]. The probability of pregnancy was positively correlated with plasma P4 concentration at TET. When heifers were grouped by quartiles of P4 concentration at TET (Q1=0.64±0.16, Q2=1.70±0.04, Q3=2.90±0.07 and Q4=5.52±0.27ng/mL) the P/TET were 45.8% (Q1; 27/59)(c), 52.25% (Q2; 31/59)(bc), 66.1% (Q3; 39/59)(ab) and 67.8% (Q4; 40/59)(a). Additionally, heifers that became pregnant had greater P4 concentrations at TET (2.87±0.16ng/mL; n=137) than heifers that did not become pregnant (2.45±0.24ng/mL; n=99). No statistical difference was observed regarding P4 concentrations on Day 7, regardless of standing estrus or pregnancy status. In cattle, manifestation of estrous behavior and plasma P4 concentration at TET increase the probability of pregnancy in in vitro-produced embryo recipients.

Abstract
A field study was conducted to estimate seasonal differences in follicular development in weaned sows and to evaluate the implication of these differences on seasonal infertility. A total of 110 sows were selected at weaning during winter-spring (WS, n=58) and summer-autumn (SA, n=52). Ovaries were scanned once daily from weaning to the onset of oestrus and twice daily from then until ovulation. Six sows during WS were removed from study for not showing growing follicles at weaning. Oestrus was evaluated twice daily from day 1 after weaning to day 14 post-weaning. One of 52 (1.9%) sows in WS and 9/52 (17.3%) in SA showed no signs of oestrus within 14 days of weaning (P<0.05). The diameters of the follicles at weaning, at the onset of oestrus and just before ovulation were smaller (P<0.01) in SA sows than in WS sows. There were fewer follicles in SA sows than in WS sows just before ovulation (P<0.05). Fifty of 51 (98.0%) sows in WS and 31/43 (72.1%) sows in SA experienced a weaning-to-oestrus interval (WOI) of 3-6 days (P<0.05). Fifty-one of 52 (98.1%) sows in WS and 43/52 (82.7%) sows in SA were inseminated; the percentage of pregnant sows that failed to farrow was lower in WS (1/51, 2.0%) than in SA (5/43, 11.6%; P<0.05). The percentage of farrowed sows was greater in WS (46/51, 90.2%) than in SA (32/43, 74.4%; P<0.05). Sows in WS had on average 1.5 more piglets than sows in SA (P<0.05). Sows with a WOI of 3-6 days had lower rates of pregnancy losses (P<0.05) and higher farrowing percentages (P<0.01) than those with a WOI>6 days, irrespective of season.

Abstract
Two experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of treatments with low versus high serum progesterone (P4) concentrations on factors associated with pregnancy success in postpubertal Nellore heifers submitted to either conventional or fixed timed artificial insemination (FTAI). Heifers were synchronized with a new controlled internal drug release device (CIDR; 1.9 g of P4 [CIDR1]) or a CIDR previously used for 18 days (CIDR3) plus 2 mg of estradiol (E2) benzoate on Day 0 and 12.5 mg of prostaglandin F2α on Day 7. In experiment 1 (n = 723), CIDR were removed on Day 7 or 9 and heifers were inseminated after estrus detection. In experiment 2 (n = 1083), CIDR were all removed on Day 9 and FTAI was performed either 48 hours later in heifers that received E2 cypionate (ECP) on Day 9 (0.5 mg; E48) or 54 or 72 hours later in conjunction with administration of GnRH (100 μg; G54 or G72). Synchronization with CIDR1 resulted in greater serum P4 concentrations and smaller follicle diameters on Days 7 and 9 in both experiments. In experiment 1, treatment with CIDR for 9 days decreased the interval from CIDR removal to estrus (Day 7, 3.76 ± 0.08 days vs. Day 9, 2.90 ± 0.07; P < 0.01) and improved conception (Day 7, 57.1% vs. Day 9, 65.8%; P = 0.05) and pregnancy rates (Day 7, 37.6% vs. Day 9, 45.3%; P = 0.04). In experiment 2, treatment with ECP improved (P < 0.01) the proportion of heifers in estrus (E48, 40.9%(a); G54, 17.1%(c); and G72, 32.0%(b)), but the pregnancy rate was not affected (P = 0.64) by treatments (E48, 38.8%; G54, 35.5%; G72, 37.5%). Synchronization with CIDR3 increased follicle diameter at FTAI (CIDR1, 11.07 ± 0.10 vs. CIDR3, 11.61 ± 0.10 mm; P < 0.01), ovulation rate (CIDR1, 82.8% vs. CIDR3, 88.0%; P < 0.01) and did not affect conception (CIDR1, 42.2 vs. CIDR3, 45.1%; P = 0.38) or pregnancy rates (CIDR1, 34.7 vs. CIDR3, 39.4%; P = 0.11). In conclusion, length of treatment with P4 affected the fertility of heifers bred based on estrus detection. When the heifers were submitted to FTAI protocol, follicle diameter at FTAI (≤10.7 mm, 23.6%; 10.8-15.7 mm, 51.5%; ≥15.8 mm, 30.0%; P < 0.01) was the main factor that affected conception and pregnancy rates.

Abstract
Estrus synchronization induces cows to gather in sexually active groups (SAGs) composed of females displaying mounting activity. Although this technique promotes the enhancement of sexual behavior, there are cows in estrus (CE) that delay estrus expression and also cows not displaying estrus (CNDE) even in the presence of a preovulatory follicle (PF). To elucidate the physiological mechanisms of the delay in the onset of estrus or absence of estrus behavior, an observational study was undertaken in 17 Bos indicus cows treated with exogenous progesterone (CIDR) to synchronize estrus and to monitor follicular growth and its steroidogenic activity. After SAGs formation, cows were ovariectomized at 24, 48, and 72 h post-CIDR. Among ovariectomized groups there were only 9 CE which: 1) showed differences in the onset of estrus; 2) displayed distinctive follicular growth patterns; and 3) at 72 h produced the highest intrafollicular estradiol concentration, and showed a linear trend to increase expression of P450scc and P450arom. Comparison of CE vs. CNDE showed that: 1) both groups had progesterone levels indicative of cyclic activity, and a PF which grew at a similar rate and size; 2) CE showed a stronger association between time and growth; and 3) CE produced more intrafollicular estradiol and progesterone, together with the expression of higher levels of P450arom. Results suggest that pending on the pattern of growth of the PF and its steroidogenic potential to produce estradiol, the onset and expression of estrus behavior may be delayed probably until the establishment of the appropriate conditions to ensure ovulation.

Abstract
The effects of estradiol benzoate (EB) and estradiol cypionate (EC) on induction of ovulation after a synchronized LH surge and on fertility of Bos indicus females submitted to timed AI (TAI) were evaluated. In Experiment 1, ovariectomized Nelore heifers were used to evaluate the effect of EB (n = 5) and EC (n = 5) on the circulating LH profile. The LH surge timing (19.6 and 50.5 h; P = 0.001), magnitude (20.5 and 9.4 ng/mL; P = 0.005), duration (8.6 and 16.5 h; P = 0.001), and area under the LH curve (158.6 and 339.4 ng/mL; P = 0.01) differed between the EB and EC treatments, respectively. In Experiment 2 (follicular responses; n = 60) and 3 (pregnancy per AI; P/AI; n = 953) suckled Bos indicus beef cows submitted to an estradiol/progesterone-based synchronization protocol were assigned to receive one of two treatments to induce synchronized ovulation: 1 mg of EB im 24 h after progesterone (P4) device removal or 1 mg of EC im at P4 device removal. There was no difference (P > 0.05) between EB and EC treatments on follicular responses (maximum diameter of the ovulatory follicle, 13.1 vs. 13.9 mm; interval from progesterone device removal to ovulation, 70.2 vs. 68.5 h; and ovulation rate, 77.8 vs. 82.8%, respectively). In addition, P/AI was similar (P < 0.22) between the cows treated with EB (57.5%; 277/482) and EC (61.8%; 291/471). In conclusion, despite pharmacologic differences, both esters of estradiol administered either at P4 device removal (EC) or 24 h later (EB) were effective in inducing an LH surge which resulted in synchronized ovulations and similar P/AI in suckled Bos indicus beef cows submitted to TAI.

Abstract
This study sought to improve the reproductive performance of anoestrous high-producing dairy cows by including equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) after progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) removal. In Experiment I, 806 cows at 51-57 days post-partum were randomly assigned to a PRID (treated with PRID), PRID-500 (treated with PRID plus 500 IU of eCG) or PRID-750 (treated with PRID plus 750 IU of eCG) group. In Experiment II, 422 cows showing a long anoestrus period (animals with no oestrus signs nor luteal tissue 35 days before treatment) were randomly assigned to the PRID, PRID-500 or PRID-750 groups. The dependent variables considered in binary logistic regression analyses for both experiments were the rates of oestrus, ovulation and conception after treatment, the cumulative conception rate on Day 120 post-partum and pregnancy loss. In Experiment I, interaction between treatment and season showed a significant effect on the oestrous response. Thus, during the warm season, PRID group cows were 8.9 times more likely to express oestrus than the remaining cows. Moreover, inseminated cows with two or more corpora lutea 8-14 days after treatment were more likely to become pregnant (by a factor of 2.4) than cows with a single corpus luteum. Finally, cows without luteal structures treated with PRID were 0.4 less likely to be pregnant on Day 120 post-partum, compared with the remaining cows. In Experiment II, cows in the PRID group treated during the warm or cool season were less likely to exhibit oestrus (by a factor of 0.06 or 0.2, respectively) or ovulate (by a factor of 0.004 or 0.14, respectively) than the remaining cows. In conclusion, in anoestrous cows in both experiments, the addition of eCG to the use of an intravaginal progesterone device to induce oestrus was beneficial. The recommended dose of eCG is 500 IU.

Abstract
Most fixed-time insemination protocols utilize an injection of GnRH at the beginning of the protocol to initiate a new follicular wave. However, the ability of GnRH to initiate a new follicular wave is dependent on the stage of the estrous cycle. We hypothesized that administering PGF(2α) 3 d before initiating a fixed-time AI protocol would improve synchrony of follicular waves and result in greater pregnancy success. Therefore, our objective was to determine whether inducing luteal regression 3 d before a fixed-time AI protocol would improve control of follicular turnover and pregnancy success to fixed-time AI. Multiparous crossbred cows at 3 locations (n = 108, 296, and 97) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) PGF(2α) [25 mg; intramuscularly (i.m.)] on d -9, GnRH (100 μg; i.m.) and insertion of a controlled internal drug-releasing device (CIDR) on d -6, PGF(2α) (25 mg; i.m.) and CIDR removal with PGF(2α) (25 mg; i.m.) at CIDR removal on d 0 (PG-CIDR) or 2) GnRH (100 μg; i.m.) and insertion of a CIDR on d -5 and CIDR removal with PGF(2α) (25 mg; i.m.) at CIDR removal and 4 to 6 h after CIDR removal (5-d CIDR). Cows were time-inseminated between 66 and 72 h (PG-CIDR) or 70 to 74 h (5-d CIDR) after CIDR removal, and GnRH was administered at the time of fixed-time AI. At location 1, ovulatory response to the first injection of GnRH was determined by ultrasonography at the time of GnRH and 48 h after GnRH administration. Among cows with follicles ≥10 mm in diameter, more (P = 0.03) PG-CIDR-treated cows ovulated after the initial GnRH injection (88%, 43/49) compared with the 5-d CIDR-treated cows (68%, 34/50). Pregnancy outcome was not influenced by location (P = 0.96), age of the animal (P = 1.0), cycling status (P = 0.99), BCS (P = 1.0), or any 2-way interactions (P ≥ 0.13). However, pregnancy success was influenced by synchronization protocol (P = 0.04). Pregnancy outcome was greater (P = 0.04) for the PG-CIDR protocol (64%) compared with the 5-d CIDR protocol (55%). In summary, control of follicular turnover was improved by inducing luteal regression 3 d before initiation of a fixed-time AI protocol, and pregnancy success was improved with the PG-CIDR protocol compared with the 5-d protocol.
