Review on various strategies for enhancing photocatalytic activity of graphene based nanocomposites for water purification

Amorphous co-doped MoSex effectively enhances photocatalysis in visible light

Molybdenum selenide has great potential for the degradation of water pollutants, but its performance is limited by the active sites and recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, an amorphous co-doped MoSex (Co-MoSex) sample was synthesized by a low-temperature hydrothermal method. Three types of unsaturated Se-Se bonds were found in Co-MoSex by Raman spectroscopy: bridging diselenide, shared diselenide, and terminal diselenide. Photocatalytic experimental results revealed that the degradation rate of Co-MoSex to methylene blue was 96.3%, the degradation rate of amorphous MoSex (a-MoSex) was 61.6%, and the degradation rate of crystalline molybdenum selenide (c-MoSe2) was 23.2%. Furthermore, it was found that the band gap of the Co-MoSex photocatalyst was reduced by 0.15 eV compared to the a-MoSex photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity of the co-doped MoSex was enhanced by increasing the unsaturated Se atom active sites, reducing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and improving light utilization.

Advances and Challenges in Developing Efficient Graphene Oxide-Based ZnO Photocatalysts for Dye Photo-Oxidation

The efficient remediation of organic dyes from wastewater is increasingly valuable in water treatment technology, largely owing to the tons of hazardous chemicals currently and constantly released into rivers and seas from various industries, including the paper, pharmaceutical, textile, and dye production industries. Using solar energy as an inexhaustible source, photocatalysis ranks among the most promising wastewater treatment techniques for eliminating persistent organic pollutants and new emerging contaminants. In that context, developing efficient photocatalysts using sunlight irradiation and effectively integrating them into reactors, however, pose major challenges in the technologically relevant application of photocatalysts. As a potential solution, graphene oxide (GO)-based zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposites may be used together with different components (i.e., ZnO and GO-based materials) to overcome the drawbacks of ZnO photocatalysts. Indeed, mounting evidence suggests that using GO-based ZnO nanocomposites can promote light absorption, charge separation, charge transportation, and photo-oxidation of dyes. Despite such advances, viable, low-cost GO-based ZnO nanocomposite photocatalysts with sufficient efficiency, stability, and photostability remain to be developed, especially ones that can be integrated into photocatalytic reactors. This article offers a concise overview of state-of-the-art GO-based ZnO nanocomposites and the principal challenges in developing them.

A Novel Synthesis of the Graphene Oxide-Silver (GO-Ag) Nanocomposite for Unique Physiochemical Applications

Graphene oxide-silver nanocomposite (GO-Ag) was fabricated via the sonochemical method, which shows unique physiochemical properties. Graphene oxide (GO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by modified Hummer's and Chemical reduction methods, respectively. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface morphology of synthesized nanoparticles was studied using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The thermoluminescence property of the nanocomposite was analyzed by irradiating the samples in gamma radiation at 1 kGy. Electrochemical reversibility of the GO-Ag nanocomposite was examined by cyclic voltammetry. The photocatalytic application of the nanocomposite was studied using degradation of methylene blue dye. Results reveal that doping of AgNPs on the GO surface not only improves its dye degradation property but also enhances its thermoluminescence property. This knowledge will be helpful in determining the antibacterial property of the GO-Ag nanocomposite in the future.

Interfacial charge modulation: carbon quantum dot implanted carbon nitride double-deck nanoframes for robust visible-light photocatalytic tetracycline degradation

Steering charge kinetics at the interface is essential to improve the photocatalytic performance of two-dimensional (2D) material-based heterostructures. Herein, we developed a novel strategy-simultaneously building two kinds of heterojunctions- to modulate interfacial charge kinetics in polymeric carbon nitride (CN) for improving the photocatalytic activity. Using a simple one-step thermal condensation of carbon quantum dot (CQD)-contained supramolecular precursors formed in water, the controllable CQD embedded CN nanoframes possessed two kinds of heterogeneous interfaces within seamlessly stitched micro-area two-dimensional in-plane and out-of-plane domains. These two kinds of heterojunctions can effectively enhance its intrinsic driving force to accelerate the separation and transfer of charge along different directions. Furthermore, the hollow double-deck porous CN-CQD nanoframes with a high surface area (296.74 m² g^-1) endowed more exposed active sites. The remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activity of hollow porous CN-CQD nanoframes was demonstrated by degrading tetracycline (TC) and rhodamine (RhB) as the models, whose robust degradation rate constant is approximately 11 and 29 times higher than that of pristine CN, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for the interfacial design of the heterophase junction with atomic precision.
