Abstract
Phenylhydrazines 1 substituted with two or three long-chain alkyl, alkoxy or alkylsulfanyl groups were successfully prepared by acid-induced removal of the Boc group in hydrazides 2. The reaction is carried out with 5 equivalents of TfOH in CF3CH2OH/CH2Cl2 at −40 °C for 1.5 min. Under these conditions, the deprotected hydrazine 1 is fully protonated, which increases its stability in the reaction medium. The hydrazines were isolated in 60–86% yields and purities >90%. The hydrazides 2 were obtained in 43–71% yields from aryl bromides 5, which were lithiated with t-BuLi and subsequently reacted with di-tert-butyl azodicarboxylate (DTBAD).

Abstract
A complementary approach to published synthetic methods for tetrazinanones, precursors to verdazyl radicals, is described herein. This approach uses carbohydrazide, a commercially available reagent, as a common starting material. Unlike previous methods described in the literature, this synthetic scheme does not rely on phosgene, phosgene substitutes, or the limited pool of commercially available monosubstituted hydrazines for its execution. A large variety of alkyl substitution patterns at the N-1 and N-5 positions of verdazyl radicals are possible, including both symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted products. An initial condensation reaction of carbohydrazide with a specific aldehyde introduces the desired C-3 substituent in the final verdazyl radical product and protects the NH(2) groups during the subsequent N-1 and N-5 alkylation reactions. A succeeding methanolysis and concomitant ring-closing reaction gives the tetrazinanone. A number of known oxidation methods can then be employed to form the final verdazyl radical product.

Abstract
A new 1,5-dipyridyl verdazyl, synthesized from the corresponding dipyridyl hydrazone, coordinates nickel(ii) to form a structurally characterized, pseudooctahedral complex analogous to Ni(terpy)(2)(2+). The unusually short Ni-verdazyl distance results in strong ferromagnetic exchange (J(Ni-rad) = +300, J(rad-rad) = +160 cm(-1)) between all three paramagnetic species along with a metal-ligand charge transfer band in the electronic spectrum.

Abstract
Three sets of heterosubstituted, interconvertible, cyclophanediene (CPD), and dihydropyrenes (DDPs) and one such set involving dinitrilepyrenes were examined by UB3LYP broken-symmetry methodology with 6-311++g(d,p) bases. Nitronyl nitroxide and oxoverdazyl (with both N and C terminals) are monoradical centers, whereas CPD and DDP moieties serve as couplers. The photoexcited CPD converts to DDP. The calculated exchange coupling constant (J) for o-VER(N)-DDP-NN is surprisingly high, 6412 cm(-1), and much larger than 28.9 cm(-1) for the CPD species, but the unsubstituted DDP is known to transform readily into pyrene, with the loss of reversibility. Nevertheless, o-VER(N)-(15,16-dinitrile)DDP-NN also has a large J value, 589.4 cm(-1). The corresponding CPD species has J = 53.3 cm(-1). We predict that the latter CPD and DDP diradicals are potential molecules to synthesize photomagnetic materials. The o-VER(N)-DDP-NN can also be an excellent photomagnetic switch at a considerably low temperature.

Abstract
Copper(I) complexes of a diketiminate featuring CF(3) groups on the backbone and dimethylphenyl substituents (4) and a nitroformazan (5) were synthesized and shown by spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and theory to contain copper(I) sites electron-deficient relative to those supported by previously studied diketiminate complexes comprising alkyl or aryl backbone substituents. Despite their electron-poor nature, oxygenation of LCu(CH(3)CN) (L = 4 or 5) at room temperature yielded bis(hydroxo)dicopper(II) compounds and at -80 degrees C yielded bis(mu-oxo)dicopper complexes that were identified on the basis of UV-vis and resonance Raman spectroscopy, spectrophotometric titration results (2:1 Cu/O(2) ratio), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (silent), and density functional theory calculations. The bis(mu-oxo)dicopper complex supported by 5 exhibited unusual spectroscopic properties and decayed via a novel intermediate proposed to be a metallaverdazyl radical complex, findings that highlight the potential for the formazan ligand to exhibit "noninnocent" behavior.
