Abstract
A series of isomorphic lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), {[Ln(L)(H2O)2]·5H2O}n (1-Ln, where Ln = Eu, Tb, Gd, and EuxTb1-x), have been synthesized by a rigid 1,3-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)imidazolium chloride (H4L+Cl-) ligand and Ln3+ ions via a solvothermal method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that 1-Ln exhibited similar three-dimensional porous frameworks with one-dimensional channels decorated by the uncoordinated carboxylate oxygen atoms. The luminescent sensing studies indicated that 1-Eu is an outstanding reusable luminescent probe suitable for the simultaneous detection of Cr2O72-, CrO42-, and MnO4- ions in an aqueous solution. Remarkably, the different proportions of Eu3+ and Tb3+ can be combined into the same Ln-MOF to yield a new series of differently doped 1-EuxTb1-x MOFs. At the same excitation wavelength, they generated dual-emission peaks of Eu3+ and Tb3+ to show a gradual change in luminous color between yellow-green, yellow, orange, orange-red, and red. On the basis of the excellent optical properties of 1-Ln complexes, they can be employed as promising luminescent probe and multicolor tunable photoluminescence materials.

Abstract
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an important enzyme related to many clinical diseases and also widely used as a labeling enzyme for immunoassay. Herein, a new electrochemical sensing strategy for ALP activity was proposed, which was based on the ALP-triggered methylene blue (MB) release from a lanthanide coordination polymer and successive penetration through a self-assembled dodecanethiol monolayer for electrochemical response. The supramolecular lanthanide coordination polymer was constructed by using guanine monophosphate (GMP) and Tb3+ as the ligand and the metal ion, respectively, and the encapsulated MB as the signal molecule. ALP catalyzed the cleavage of the phosphate group from the GMP ligand and disrupted the coordination polymer network to release abundant MB molecules for electrochemical responses related to ALP activity. The obtained lanthanide coordination polymers were well characterized by various techniques. The fabricated electrochemical sensor for ALP activity assay shows distinct advantages such as being one-step, label-free, immobilization-free and highly sensitive. The detection limit toward ALP activity was down to 0.5 U L-1. With the aid of a MB enrichment process on the modified electrode before measurement, the detection limit could be further improved to 0.1 U L-1. Moreover, the assay method could be applied for ALP detection in complex matrixes such as human serum and also for efficient inhibitor evaluation. Thus, the current study provides a new pathway to the fabrication of a coordination polymer-based electrochemical sensing platform for applications in disease diagnosis and drug discovery.

Abstract
Light-harvesting nanoprobes were developed by self-assembly of nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) and stimuli-responsive polymers for fluorometric sensing of pH values and temperature. Two kinds of fluorescent NMOFs (acting as the energy donor) and stimuli-responsive polymers conjugated to fluorophores (acting as energy acceptors) were prepared and characterized. The NMOFs include zirconium(IV) and π-conjugated dicarboxylate ligands. The fluorophores inclued cyaine dyes and a Bodipy dye. The energy donor and energy acceptor form a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanosystem. In the light-harvesting system, the chain lengths of the stimuli-responsive polymers vary when the local pH value or temperature change. Ratiometric sensing of pH and temperature was accomplished by monitoring fluorescence. pH values were can be sensed between 3.0 and 8.0 under 420 nm excitation and by ratioing the emission peaks at 645 and 530 nm. Temperature can be sensed in the range from 25 to 50 °C under 550 nm excitation and by ratioing the emission peaks at 810 and 695 nm. The nanoprobes display excellent water dispersibility and cell membrane permeability. They were applied to image pH values and temperature in HeLa cells. Graphical abstract Schematic presentation of an effective strategy to fabricate light-harvesting nanoprobes by self-assembly of MOFs and stimuli-responsive polymers for ratiometric pH and temperature sensing. The distance as the polymer length between energy donor and acceptor is crucial for energy transfer efficiency.

Abstract
The host-guest composite, RhB@Tb-dcpcpt, is synthesized by trapping rhodamine B (RhB) into the channels of [Me2NH2][Tb3(dcpcpt)3(HCOO)]·DMF·15H2O (Tb-dcpcpt, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide) via an ion-exchange process. The photophysical property of RhB@Tb-dcpcpt exhibits stable columinescence of RhB and Tb3+ ions in the whole excitation range of 300-390 nm, realizing an excitation-wavelength-independent yellow light emission. Powder X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence analysis illustrate the outstanding stabilities of RhB@Tb-dcpcpt on structural and photophysical properties in water medium. Subsequently, a bifunctional sensing process toward antibiotics is designed in terms of luminescent intensity and color. As a result, RhB@Tb-dcpcpt could realize sensitive and selective detection toward nitrofuran antibiotics (nitrofurazone and nitrofurantoin) via luminescent quenching process and toward quinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin) via luminescent color-changing process. Systematic analysis on the sensing mechanism reveals that photoinduced electron transfer and inner filter effect contribute to the realization of the sensing process.

Abstract
Two benzene with multiple contiguous phenyl substituent derivatives, namely, 1, 2, 3, 4-tetraphenyl benzene (TPB) and bis(1,2,3,4-tetraphenylbenzene-yl) diphenylsilane (TPB-Si), were synthesized by the Knoevenagel/Diels-Alder method. TPB and TPB-Si both showed aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties in tetrahydrofuran/water mixtures. The fluorescence-quenching behaviors of the two compounds with different nitroaromatic compounds were also investigated. TPB and TPB-Si both showed low detection limit, high sensitivity, and high quenching efficiency in detecting nitroaromatic compounds. Furthermore, the two compounds in aggregate state exhibited much better detection abilities than in THF solution. And TPB-Si exhibited better detection ability than TPB in both solution and aggregate state. The reason could be attributed to the special tetrahedral molecular structure of TPB-Si, which was demonstrated by theoretical calculations and crystal structures. Moreover, TPB-Si in solid film also exhibited excellent detection performance to nitroaromatic explosive vapor. This work may serve as a basis for designing new organic materials with great efficiency and sensitivity in fluorescence detection.

Abstract
A novel orange-yellow-emitting polymethyl methacrylate derivative grafted with cationic iridium(III) complex units was synthesized and used as down-conversion luminescent materials in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The polymer had a thermal decomposition temperature (Td) of 275 °C. With the temperature increasing from 20 to 100 °C, its photoluminescent intensity decreased to 76.8% with thermal quenching activation energy (Ea) of 0.2775 eV. A series of LEDs was fabricated by 460 nm blue GaN chips and the polymer blended in silicone at different concentrations. At 4.0 wt %, a cold white LED was obtained, the correlated color temperature (CCT) was 10,050 K, color rendering index (CRI) was 71.2, luminous efficiency (ηL) was 5.3 lm·w−1, and Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates were (0.30, 0.24). At 5.0 wt.%, the LED emitted neutral white light, its CCT was 4938 K, CRI was 75, ηL was 13.8 lm·w−1, and the CIE value was (0.34, 0.27). At 5.5 wt %, 6.0 wt %, 7.0 wt %, and 8.0 wt %, the LEDs all emitted warm white light; their CCTs were 3446, 3093, 2557, and 2337 K, respectively; their CRIs were 73.6, 71.8, 63.8, and 59.0, respectively; their ηL were 18.1, 16.3, 14.8, and 13.7 lm·w−1, respectively; and their CIE values were (0.36, 0.30), (0.40, 0.35), (0.45, 0.38), and (0.50, 0.42), respectively. At 9.0 wt %, the blue light of GaN chip was completely absorbed by the polymer and only the orange-yellow light of the polymer emitted. The results suggested the polymer was a promising orange-yellow-emitting phosphor candidate for white LEDs, especially for warm white LEDs.

[PMID: 30960083 PMCID: PMC6402005 DOI: 10.3390/polym11010099] [Citation(s) in RCA: 17] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/13/2018] [Revised: 12/26/2018] [Accepted: 01/04/2019] [Indexed: 01/08/2023] Open
Abstract
Developing multi-selective luminescence sensing technology to differentiate serial compounds is very important but challenging. White-light-emitting decoding sensing based on lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) is a promising candidate for multi-selective luminescence sensing application. In this work, three isomorphic Ln-MOFs based on H3dcpcpt (3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-5-(4-carboxylphenl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole) ligand, exhibiting red, blue, and green emission, respectively, have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. The isostructural mixed Eu/Gd/Tb-dcpcpt is fabricated via the in-situ doping of different Ln3+ ions into the host framework, which can emit white light upon the excitation at 320 nm. It is noteworthy that this white-light-emitting complex could serve as a convenient luminescent platform for distinguishing eight frequently-used antibiotics: five through luminescence-color-changing processes (tetracycline hydrochloride, yellow; nitrofurazone, orange; nitrofurantoin, orange; sulfadiazine, blue; carbamazepine, blue) and three through luminescence quenching processes (metronidazole, dimetridazole, and ornidazole). Moreover, a novel method, 3D decoding map, has been proposed to realize multi-selective luminescence sensing applications. This triple-readout map features unique characteristics on luminescence color and mechanism. The mechanism has been systematically interpreted on the basis of the structural analysis, energy transfer and allocation process, and peak fitting analysis for photoluminescence spectra. This approach presents a promising strategy to explore luminescent platforms capable of effectively sensing serial compounds.

Abstract
Powerful explosive sensors play a key role in public security and environmental protection. Herein, we report a series of isostructural lanthanide coordination polymers [Ln2L1.5(NMP)2] n (LnL: Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er; H4L = [1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-2',4,4″,5'-tetracarboxylic acid; NMP = N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) and mixed-Ln LnL (Eu xTb1- xL, Eu xGd1- xL, Tb xGd1- xL, and Eu xTb0.02- xGd0.98L). Luminescence studies show that both H4L and GdL emit strong fluorescence and phosphorescence at 77 K while only fluorescence at room temperature, and TbL exhibits strong Tb3+ characteristic emission, although the energy difference between the triplet excited state of H4L (20661 cm-1) and the 5D4 energy level of Tb3+ (20500 cm-1) is very small. By doping Eu3+ and Tb3+ into GdL, we obtained Eu xTb0.02- xGd0.98L emitting warm white light. For TbL and Tb0.01Gd0.99L showing dual emission, upon addition of picric acid (PA) into their suspensions in Tris-HCl buffer, Tb3+ emission decreases slowly; however, the ligand-based emission is sharply quenched, rendering TbL and Tb0.01Gd0.99L excellent single-lanthanide and mixed-lanthanide ratiometric luminescence PA sensor materials, respectively.

Abstract
A new series of five three-dimensional Ln(III) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) formulated as [Ln4(μ6-L)2(μ-HCOO)(μ3-OH)3(μ3-O)(DMF)2(H2O)4] n {Ln3+ = Tb3+ (1), Eu3+ (2), Gd3+ (3), Dy3+ (4), and Er3+ (5)} was successfully obtained via a solvothermal reaction between the corresponding lanthanide(III) nitrates and 2-(6-carboxypyridin-3-yl)terephthalic acid (H3L). All of the obtained compounds were fully characterized, and their structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All products are isostructural and possess porous 3D networks of the fluorite topological type, which are driven by the cubane-like [Ln4(μ3-OH)3(μ3-O)(μ-HCOO)]6+ blocks and μ6-L3- spacers. Luminescent and sensing properties of 1-5 were investigated in detail, revealing a unique capability of Tb-MOF (1) for sensing acetone and metal(III) cations (Fe3+ or Ce3+) with high efficiency and selectivity. Apart from a facile recyclability after sensing experiments, the obtained Tb-MOF material features a remarkable stability in a diversity of environments such as common solvents, aqueous solutions of metal ions, and solutions with a broad pH range from 4 to 11. In addition, compound 1 represents a very rare example of the versatile Ln-MOF probe capable of sensing Ce3+ or Fe3+ cations or acetone molecules.

Abstract
Two series of isostructural lanthanide coordination complexes, namely, LIFM-42(Ln) (Ln=Eu, Tb, Gd, in which LIFM stands for the Lehn Institute of Functional Materials) and LIFM-43(Ln) (Ln=Er, Yb), were synthesized through the self-assembly of an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) ligand, 5-[2-(5-fluoro-2-hydroxyphenyl)-4,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-1H-imidazol-1-yl]isophthalic acid (H2 hpi2cf), with different lanthanide ions. In the coordination structures linked by the ligands and oxo-bridged LnIII 2 clusters (for LIFM-42(Ln) series) or isolated LnIII ions (for LIFM-43(Ln) series), the ESIPT ligand can serve as both the host and antenna for protecting and sensitizing the photoluminescence (PL) of LnIII ions. Meanwhile, the -OH⋅⋅⋅N active sites on the ligands are vacant, which provides availability to systematically explore the PL behavior of Ln complexes with ESIPT interference. Based on the accepting levels of different lanthanide ions, energy transfer can occur from the T1 (K*) or T1 (E*) (K*=excited keto form, E*=excited enol form) excited states of the ligand. Furthermore, the sensitized lanthanide luminescence in both visible and near-infrared regions, as well as the remaining K* emission of the ligand, can be modulated by the ESIPT responsiveness to different solvents, anions, and temperature.

Abstract
We show the key role that the size and shape of the solvent molecules may play in the dimensionality and structure of a series of lanthanoid-chloranilato coordination polymers. We report the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of six different coordination polymers prepared with Er(iii) and chloranilato (C6O4Cl22- = 3,6-dichloro-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone) and six different solvents: [Er2(C6O4Cl2)3(H2O)6]·10H2O (1), [Er2(C6O4Cl2)3(FMA)6]·4FMA·2H2O (2) (FMA = formamide = NH2CHO), [Er2(C6O4Cl2)3(DMSO)4]·2DMSO·2H2O (3) (DMSO = dimethy sulfoxide = Me2SO), [Er2(C6O4Cl2)3(DMF)6] (4) (DMF = dimethylformamide = Me2NCHO), [Er2(C6O4Cl2)3(DMA)4] (5) (DMA = dimethylacetamide = Me2NC(Me)O) and [Er2(C6O4Cl2)3(HMPA)(H2O)3]·H2O (6) (HMPA = hexamethylphosphormamide = (Me2N)3PO). We show how the different solvent molecules modulate and determine important structural parameters such as the coordination number and geometry, the shape and distortions of the cavities, the presence of solvent molecules in these cavities, the interlayer space and even the dimensionality of the structure.

Abstract
Low-cost, high-performance luminescent probes with wide application potential have been actively pursued. Conventional luminescent probes, which rely on single or dual emissions responsive to analyte molecules, demonstrate limited sensitivity and selectivity because the single emissions can be easily affected by many non-analyte factors, while the dual emissions can only offer single-ratiometric luminescent sensing. Here we report a white-light-emitting trichromatic MOF composite (W2) as the first multidimensional ratiometric luminescent probe. It is facilely synthesized by simultaneously incorporating red- and green-emitting iridium and ruthenium complex cations as encapsulated luminescent modules (ELMs) into a porous blue-emitting MOF via ion exchange. Specific volatile organic solvents (VOSs) can cause VOS-dependent changes to the MOF-to-ELM energy transfer efficiencies in W2, while nitroaromatic (NAC) vapors intriguingly and unprecedentedly quench the three emissions at different rates, both of which enable visible luminescent sensing. Each VOS can be correlated to a unique combination of the two MOF-to-ELM ratios of emission-peak heights, enabling a two-dimensional (2D) code recognition. Furthermore, the time-dependent evolution of the two ratios upon exposure to selective NAC vapors can be mapped out, achieving the first 3D code recognition. Both the synthetic and sensing strategies can be further implemented to develop low-cost and effective luminescent probes.

Abstract
Two new three-dimensional (3D) Co(II)- and Cu(II)-azido frameworks, [Co₂(N₃)₄(bpym)₂]n (1) and [Cu₂(N₃)₄(bpym)]n (2), were successfully synthesized by introducing a semi-flexible N-donor ligand, 5,5'-bipyrimidin (bpym), with different bridging modes and orientations. Compounds 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. Compounds 1 and 2 are 3D pillared-layer frameworks with double end-on (EO) azido bridged dinuclear motifs, [M₂(EO-N₃)₂]. In Compound 1, the bpym ligands show trans μ₂-bridging mode and the role as pillars to connect the Co(II)-azido layers, composed of [Co₂(EO-N₃)₂] motifs and single end-to-end (EE) azido bridges, to a 3D network with BN topology. In contrast, in 2, the bpym ligand adopts a twisted μ₄-bridging mode, which not only connects the adjacent [Cu₂(EO-N₃)₂] units to a layer, but also functions as a pillar for the layers of the 3D structure. The structural diversities between the two types of architectures can be attributed to the coordination geometry preference of the metal ions (octahedral for Co2+ and square pyramidal for Cu2+). Magnetic investigations revealed that Compound 1 exhibits ferromagnetic-like magnetic ordering due to spin canting with a critical temperature, TC = 33.0 K, and furthers the field-induced magnetic transitions of metamagnetism at temperatures below TC. Compound 2 shows an antiferromagnetic ordering with TN = 3.05 K and a field-induced magnetic transition of spin-flop at temperatures below the TN.

Abstract
Taking advantage of the outstanding properties of a naphthalenediimide-based entangled porous coordination polymer, a simple strategy for the achievement of white light emission is herein presented. The dynamic structural transformation of the [Zn₂(bdc)₂(dpNDI)]n metal-organic framework enhances the interactions with aryl-guests giving rise to different luminescence colors upon UV (ultraviolet) illumination. Thus, through the rational selection of those small aromatic guest molecules with different electron donor substituents at the appropriate proportion, the emission color was tuned by mixture ratio of guest molecules and even white light emission was achieved. Furthermore, domains in large crystals with a complementary response to linearly polarized light were noticed.

Abstract
Temperature plays a crucial role in both scientific research and industry. However, traditional temperature sensors, such as liquid-filled thermometers, thermocouples, and transistors, require contact to obtain heat equilibrium between the probe and the samples during the measurement. In addition, traditional temperature sensors have limitations when being used to detect the temperature change of fast-moving samples at smaller scales. Herein, the carbon quantum dots (C-QDs) functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) composite film, a novel contactless solid optical thermometer, has been prepared via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Instead of terephthalic acid (H2BDC), 1',2',4',5'-benzenetetracarboxylic (H4BTEC) acid was employed to construct a UiO-66 framework to present two uncoordinated carboxylic groups decorated on the pore surface. The uncoordinated carboxylic groups can generate negative charges, which facilitates the deposition of film on the positive electrode during the EPD process. Moreover, UiO-66-(COOH)2 MOFs can absorb C-QDs from the solution and prevent C-QDs from aggregating, and the well-dispersed C-QDs impart fluorescence characteristics to composites. As-synthesized composite film was successfully used to detect temperature change in the range of 97-297 K with a relative sensitivity up to 1.3% K-1 at 297 K.
