Abstract
Enhancing microbial electrocatalysis through new material design is essential to the efficient and stable operation of bio-electrochemical system (BES). In this work, a novel conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) hydrogel was fabricated by electrodepositing both CNT and chitosan onto a carbon paper electrode and used as a BES anode electrode. The microscopic, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analytical results show that the CNT hydrogel exhibited an excellent electrochemical activity. In the BES tests, the current generation and the maximum power density of the MFC with the CNT hydrogel increased by 23% and 65%, respectively, compared with the control. This demonstrates that the utilization of such a hydrogel offers an effective approach to enhance the current generation of BES. The great conductivity of CNT and the high content of oxygen-containing functional groups (C-OH, C═O, etc.) on their surface were found to be responsible for the improvements. Our work provides a facile way to prepare appropriate BES electrodes and offers a straightforward and effective route to enhance the BES performance.

Abstract
Linezolid reacted with palladium to form 1:1 binary cationic chelate which further reacted with eosin dye to form 1:1 ternary ion association complex at pH 4 of Walpole's acetate buffer in the presence of methyl cellulose. As a result not only absorption spectra were changed but Resonance Rayleigh Scattering (RRS), Second-order Scattering (SOS) and Frequency Doubling Scattering (FDS) intensities were greatly enhanced. The analytical wavelengths of RRS, SOS and FDS (λex/λem) of ternary complex were located at 538 nm/538nm, 240 nm/480 nm and 660 nm/330 nm, respectively. The linearity range for RRS, SOS and FDS methods were 0.01-0.5 μg mL(-1), 0.1-2 μg mL(-1) and 0.2-1.8 μg mL(-1), respectively. The sensitivity order of three methods was as RRS>SOS>FDS. Accuracy of all methods were determined by recovery studies and showed recovery between 98% and 102%. Intraday and inter day precision were checked for all methods and %RSD was found to be less than 2 for all methods. The effects of foreign substances were tested on RRS method and it showed the method had good selectivity. For optimization of process parameter, Taguchi orthogonal array design L8(2(4)) was used and ANOVA was adopted to determine the statistically significant control factors that affect the scattering intensities of methods. The reaction mechanism, composition of ternary ion association complex and reasons for scattering intensity enhancement was discussed in this work.

Abstract
Methylene blue is an electroactive molecule that has been employed for the detection of the DNA hybridization event in electrochemical sensors. However, its use as a covalent label is very scarce and in most of the cases, non-covalent interactions (hydrophobic, electrostatic) are employed. Although it has advantages as simplicity and fewer number of procedure steps, the covalent attachment is less exploited in the development of these sensors. In this article, the electrochemical behavior of methylene blue attached to different DNA-strands is studied. Several lengths (15- and 30-mer) and different degree of DNA modification (MB-DNA, MB-DNA-MB and MB-DNA-SH) have been studied. The highest signals were obtained for longer strands with two MB molecules. In all the cases the signal is enhanced by CNT-nanostructuration of the electrode. Adsorption on these modified screen-printed electrodes allowed the amplification by employing an accumulation time. In this way, a sensitivity of -0.2864 μA μM-1 and a limit of detection of 800 nM for a 120 s accumulation time were obtained.

Abstract
A versatile strategy for electrochemical determination of glycoalkaloids (GAs) was developed by using a carbon nanotubes-phenylboronic acid (CNTs-PBA) modified glassy carbon electrode. PBA reacts with α-solanine and α-chaconine to form a cyclic ester, which could be utilized to detect GAs. This method allowed GA detection from 1 μM to 28 μM and the detection limit was 0.3 μM. Affinity interaction of GAs and immobilized PBA caused an essential change of the peak current. The CNT-PBA modified electrodes were sensitive for detection of GAs, and the peak current values were in quite good agreement with those measured by the sensors.

Abstract
This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of a novel electrochemical label for sensitive electrochemical stripping detection of DNA hybridization based on dendrimer-encapsulated copper. The generation 4.5 (G 4.5) carboxyl-terminated poly(amidoamine) dendrimer with a trimesyl core was used as a template for synthesis of Cu²⁺/dendrimer nanocomposites (Cu-DNCs). Ratios of Cu²⁺/dendrimer were optimized in order to obtain stable nanocomposites with maximal copper loading in the interior of a polymeric shell. Cu-DNCs labeled DNA probe was employed for determining a target ssDNA immobilized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) based on a specific hybridization reaction. The hybridization events were monitored by electrochemical detection of Cu anchored on the hybrids after the release in a diluted nitric acid by anodic stripping differential pulse voltammetry (ASDPV). The results showed that only a complementary sequence could form a dsDNA with the Cu-DNCs DNA probe and give an obvious electrochemical signal. The non-complementary sequence exhibited negligible signal change compared with the blank measurement (means: the electrode containing no target DNA incubating in hybridization buffer solution containing Cu-DNCs DNA probe for a certain time). The use of Cu encapsulated-dendrimer as tags and ASDPV for the detection of the released Cu ions could enhance the hybridization signal, and result in the increase of the sensitivity for the target DNA. Under the conditions employed here, the detection limit for measuring the full complementary sequence is down to pM level.

Abstract
Esterification by β-apo-14'-carotenoic acid was found to have opposite effects on antioxidant activity of quercetin (at B4', B3' hydroxyl) as of daidzein (at A7 hydroxyl) in phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The daidzein ester had increased activity, while quercetin had a significant decreased activity. Quantum mechanical calculations using density function theory (DFT) indicate a modest decrease in bond dissociation enthalpy, BDE, for (weakest) hydrogen-oxygen phenolic bond in daidzein from 368.4 kJ · mol(- 1) to 367.7 kJ · mol(- 1) compared to a significant increase in quercetin from 329.5 kJ · mol(- 1) to 356.6 kJ · mol(- 1) upon derivatization. These opposite changes in tendency for hydrogen atom transfer from phenolic groups to lipid radicals combined with an increase in A-to-B dihedral angle from 0.0° to 36.4° and in dipole moment from 0.40 D to 6.01 D for quercetin upon derivatization, while less significant for daidzein (36.4°-36.7° and 3.26 D-7.87 D, respectively), together provide a rationale for the opposite effect of esterification on antioxidation.

Abstract
Due to the high peroxidase-like activity and small lateral size of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), the covalently assembled GQDs/Au electrode exhibits great performance and stability in H(2)O(2) detection. It is better or comparable to some enzyme-immobilized electrodes, and thus could be useful in sensing H(2)O(2) changes in biological systems.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive method was developed for simultaneous determination of methotrexate (MTX) and folic acid (FA) by ion chromatography with electrochemical detection (IC-ECD). Quaternary amine functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (q-MWNTs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was used as an amperometric sensor to determine MTX and FA. The electrochemical behaviors of MTX and FA at the q-MWNTs/GCE were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Results indicated that this modified electrode exhibited electrocatalytic oxidation toward MTX and FA with high sensitivity, stability and long life. Good separation of MTX and FA was demonstrated by IC on an anion-exchange column with phosphate buffer solution (PBS) as eluent. Under the optimal conditions, the linear ranges were from 0.01 to 20mg/L for both MTX and FA with correlation coefficients r ≥ 0.9994. The obtained detection limits (LODs) for MTX and FA were 0.2 and 0.4 μg/L (S/N=3), respectively. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of MTX and FA in plasma and urine of patients of rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
A simple method has been developed for the spontaneous deposition of Prussian blue (PB) particles from a solution containing only ferricyanide ions onto conducting substrates such as indium tin oxide glass, glassy carbon disk and carbon nanotube (CNT) materials. Formation of PB deposits was confirmed by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrometry and electrochemical techniques. The surface morphology of the PB particles deposited on the substrates was examined by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. CNT/PB composite modified glassy carbon electrodes exhibited an electrocatalytic property for hydrogen peroxide reduction. These modified electrodes exhibited a high sensitivity for electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide at −0.05 V (vs. Ag|AgCl), probably due to the synergistic effect of CNT with PB. Then, CNT/PB modified electrodes were further developed as amperometric glucose biosensors. These biosensors offered a linear response to glucose concentration from 0.1 to 0.9 mM with good selectivity, high sensitivity of 0.102 A M−1 cm−2 and short response time (within 2 s) at a negative operation potential of −0.05 V (vs. Ag|AgCl). The detection limit was estimated to be 0.01 mM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.

Abstract
Highy crystalline NiO nanoparticles are uniformly grown on the walls of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at moderate temperature.Their size and stoichiometry are controlled by the ALD process parameters. The obtained NiO/CNT hybrids exhibit excellent performance in the electro-oxidation of methanol.

Abstract
A biosensor based on an array of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition is found to be effective for the simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) in the presence of excess ascorbic acid (AA). The CNF electrode outperforms the conventional glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for both selectivity and sensitivity. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), three distinct peaks are seen for the CNF electrode at 0.13 V, 0.45 V, and 0.70 V for the ternary mixture of AA, DA, and 5-HT. In contrast, the analytes are indistinguishable in a mixture using a GCE. For the CNF electrode, the detection limits are 50 nM for DA and 250 nM for 5-HT.

Abstract
The properties of graphene oxide (GO) and DNA-stabilised reduced graphene-oxide (rGO) sheets as electron-transfer mediators in partially blocked electrodes are evaluated employing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Evidences obtained from UV/Vis, Raman and FTIR spectroscopies, as well as atomic force microscopy, confirm that the reduction of exfoliated GO single sheets by hydrazine yields partially reduced graphene oxide featuring a high defect density. Two-dimensional assemblies of GO and rGO were formed through electrostatic adsorption at Au electrodes, sequentially modified with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) and poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC). The MUA:PDADMAC generates a strong blocking layer to the electron-transfer reaction involving the ferri/ferrocyanide redox couple. This blocking behaviour is not significantly affected upon adsorption of GO. However, adsorption of a sub-monolayer of rGO decreases the charge-transfer resistance by more than two orders of magnitude. Analysis of cyclic voltammograms and impedance spectra suggests that electron transfer in rGO assemblies is mediated by occupied states located just below the redox Fermi energy of the probe. These findings are discussed in the context of on-going controversies regarding the electrochemical reactivity of sp(2)-carbon basal planes.
