Abstract
Excitation-dependent multiple fluorescence of a 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HBO) derivative (1) is described. Compound 1 contains the structure of a charge-transfer (CT) 4-hydroxyphenylvinylenebipy fluorophore and an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer capable (ESIPT-capable) HBO component that intersect at the hydroxyphenyl moiety. Therefore, both CT and ESIPT pathways, while spatially mostly separated, are available to the excited state of 1. The ESIPT process offers two emissive isomeric structures (enol and keto) of 1 in the excited state, while the susceptibility of 1 to a base adds another option to tune the composite emission color. In addition to the ground-state acid-base equilibrium that can be harnessed for the control of emission color by excitation energy, compound 1 exhibits excitation-dependent emission that is attributed to solvent-affected ground-state structural changes. Therefore, depending on the medium and excitation wavelength, the emission from the enol, keto, and anion forms could occur simultaneously, which are in the color ranges of blue, green, and orange/red, respectively. A composite color of white with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) can be materialized through judicious choices of medium and excitation wavelength.

Abstract
We have studied, using ab initio tools, a series of recently prepared fluorescent julolidine derivatives, undergoing Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT). We show that the computed free energy change in the excited state (ΔGES) can be used to predict the preference for enol, keto, or dual emission. Indeed, two julolidine molecules experimentally show dual emission, consistent with our finding of a small ΔGES. In agreement with experimental outcomes the complexation between the ESIPT centre and BF2 increases the rigidity of the fluorophore and greatly facilitates emission at energies close to the original enol (E*) fluorescence band. The protonation of the imino group also suppresses ESIPT and sole E* emission is obtained. We disclose that chemical substitution can significantly tune the radiationless deactivation of the enol related to the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond rotation of the ESIPT centre. While there is a significant barrier for the experimentally studied compounds we have found a strong correlation between the barrier height and the electron donating strength of the phenyl substituent. Strong donors such as amines facilitate the barrierless non-radiative decay from E* back to the ground state, while weak electron donors make the barrier sufficiently high to allow ESIPT. Strong electron accepting groups such as -NO2 further increase this barrier. This work therefore illustrates the fine interplay necessary to design dual emitters.

Abstract
Ab initio calculation of electronic excitation energies with chemical accuracy (ca. 1 kcal·mol-1 or 0.043 eV with respect to experiment) is a long-standing challenge in electronic structure theory. Indeed, the most advanced theories can, in practice, only be used to estimate vertical transition energies that cannot be measured experimentally, whereas the calculation of 0-0 energies requires excited-state structures and vibrations for both the ground and excited states, which drastically restrains the number of applicable methods. In this Letter, we present a composite computational protocol able to deliver chemically accurate theoretical 0-0 energies, with a mean absolute deviation of 0.018 eV for a set of 35 singlet valence states. Such accuracy, achievable for the valence states of small- and medium-sized molecules only, allows pinpointing questionable experimental assignments with very high confidence and constitutes a step toward quantitative prediction of excited-state properties.

Abstract
An implementation of a QM/MM embedding in a polarizable environment is presented for second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory, MP2, for ground state energies and molecular gradients and for the second-order Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction, ADC(2), for excitation energies and excited state molecular gradients. In this implementation of PE-MP2 and PE-ADC(2), the polarizable embedded Hartree-Fock wave function is used as uncorrelated reference state. The polarization-correlation cross terms for the ground and excited states are included in this model via an approximate coupling density. A Lagrangian formulation is used to derive the relaxed electron densities and molecular gradients. The resolution-of-the-identity approximation speeds up the calculation of four-index electron repulsion integrals in the molecular orbital basis. As a first application, the method is used to study the photophysical properties of host-guest complexes where the accuracy and weaknesses of the model are also critically examined. It is demonstrated that the ground state geometries of the full quantum mechanical calculation for the supermolecule can be well reproduced. For excited state geometries, the deviations from the supermolecular calculation are slightly larger, but still the environment effects are captured qualitatively correctly, and energy gaps between the ground and excited states are obtained with sufficient accuracy.

Abstract
We review state-of-the-art electronic structure methods based both on wave function theory (WFT) and density functional theory (DFT). Strengths and limitations of both the wave function and density functional based approaches are discussed, and modern attempts to combine these two methods are presented. The challenges in modeling excited-state chemistry using both single-reference and multireference methods are described. Topics covered include background, combining density functional theory with single-configuration wave function theory, generalized Kohn-Sham (KS) theory, global hybrids, range-separated hybrids, local hybrids, using KS orbitals in many-body theory (including calculations of the self-energy and the GW approximation), Bethe-Salpeter equation, algorithms to accelerate GW calculations, combining DFT with multiconfigurational WFT, orbital-dependent correlation functionals based on multiconfigurational WFT, building multiconfigurational wave functions from KS configurations, adding correlation functionals to multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (MCSCF) energies, combining DFT with configuration-interaction singles by means of time-dependent DFT, using range separation to combine DFT with MCSCF, embedding multiconfigurational WFT in DFT, and multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory.

Abstract
The Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) formalism has been recently shown to be a valuable alternative to time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with the same computing time scaling with system size. In particular, problematic transitions for TD-DFT such as charge-transfer, Rydberg and cyanine-like excitations were shown to be accurately described with BSE. We demonstrate here that combining the BSE formalism with the polarisable continuum model (PCM) allows us to include simultaneously linear-response and state-specific contributions to solvatochromism. This is confirmed by exploring transitions of various natures (local, charge-transfer, etc.) in a series of solvated molecules (acrolein, indigo, p-nitro-aniline, donor-acceptor complexes, etc.) for which we compare BSE solvatochromic shifts to those obtained by linear-response and state-specific TD-DFT implementations. Such a remarkable and unique feature is particularly valuable for the study of solvent effects on excitations presenting a hybrid localised/charge-transfer character.

Abstract
Fluorescence lifetimes were evaluated using TD-DFT under different approximations for the emitting molecule and various exchange-correlation functionals, such as B3LYP, BMK, CAM-B3LYP, LC-BLYP, M06, M06-2X, M11, PBE0, ωB97, ωB97X, LC-BLYP*, and ωB97X* where the range-separation parameters in the last two functionals were tuned in a non-empirical fashion. Changes in the optimised molecular geometries between the ground and electronically excited states were found to affect the quality of the calculated lifetimes significantly, while the inclusion of vibronic features led to further improvements over the assumption of a vertical electronic transition. The LC-BLYP* functional was found to return the most accurate fluorescence lifetimes with unsigned errors that are mostly within 1.5 ns of experimental values.

Abstract
We present a new framework for calculating coupled cluster (CC) excitation energies at a reduced computational cost. It relies on correlated natural transition orbitals (NTOs), denoted CIS(D')-NTOs, which are obtained by diagonalizing generalized hole and particle density matrices determined from configuration interaction singles (CIS) information and additional terms that represent correlation effects. A transition-specific reduced orbital space is determined based on the eigenvalues of the CIS(D')-NTOs, and a standard CC excitation energy calculation is then performed in that reduced orbital space. The new method is denoted CorNFLEx (Correlated Natural transition orbital Framework for Low-scaling Excitation energy calculations). We calculate second-order approximate CC singles and doubles (CC2) excitation energies for a test set of organic molecules and demonstrate that CorNFLEx yields excitation energies of CC2 quality at a significantly reduced computational cost, even for relatively small systems and delocalized electronic transitions. In order to illustrate the potential of the method for large molecules, we also apply CorNFLEx to calculate CC2 excitation energies for a series of solvated formamide clusters (up to 4836 basis functions).

Abstract
The accurate prediction of singlet and triplet excitation energies is an area of intense research of significant fundamental interest and critical for many applications. Most calculations of singlet and triplet energies use time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in conjunction with an approximate exchange-correlation functional. In this work, we examine and critically assess an alternative method for predicting low-lying neutral excitations with similar computational cost, the ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach, and compare results against high-accuracy wavefunction-based methods. We consider singlet and triplet excitations of 27 prototypical organic molecules, including members of Thiel's set, the acene series, and several aromatic hydrocarbons exhibiting charge-transfer-like excitations. Analogous to its impact in TDDFT, we find that the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) overcomes triplet instabilities in the BSE approach, improving both triplet and singlet energetics relative to higher level theories. Finally, we find that BSE-TDA calculations built on effective DFT starting points, such as those utilizing optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals, can yield accurate singlet and triplet excitation energies for gas-phase organic molecules.

Abstract
A reduced-cost density fitting (DF) linear-response second-order coupled-cluster (CC2) method has been developed for the evaluation of excitation energies. The method is based on the simultaneous truncation of the molecular orbital (MO) basis and the auxiliary basis set used for the DF approximation. For the reduction of the size of the MO basis, state-specific natural orbitals (NOs) are constructed for each excited state using the average of the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) and the corresponding configuration interaction singles with perturbative doubles [CIS(D)] density matrices. After removing the NOs of low occupation number, natural auxiliary functions (NAFs) are constructed [M. Kállay, J. Chem. Phys. 141, 244113 (2014)], and the NAF basis is also truncated. Our results show that, for a triple-zeta basis set, about 60% of the virtual MOs can be dropped, while the size of the fitting basis can be reduced by a factor of five. This results in a dramatic reduction of the computational costs of the solution of the CC2 equations, which are in our approach about as expensive as the evaluation of the MP2 and CIS(D) density matrices. All in all, an average speedup of more than an order of magnitude can be achieved at the expense of a mean absolute error of 0.02 eV in the calculated excitation energies compared to the canonical CC2 results. Our benchmark calculations demonstrate that the new approach enables the efficient computation of CC2 excitation energies for excited states of all types of medium-sized molecules composed of up to 100 atoms with triple-zeta quality basis sets.

Abstract
In a recent work [P. Baudin and K. Kristensen, J. Chem. Phys. 144, 224106 (2016)], we introduced a local framework for calculating excitation energies (LoFEx), based on second-order approximated coupled cluster (CC2) linear-response theory. LoFEx is a black-box method in which a reduced excitation orbital space (XOS) is optimized to provide coupled cluster (CC) excitation energies at a reduced computational cost. In this article, we present an extension of the LoFEx algorithm to the calculation of CC2 oscillator strengths. Two different strategies are suggested, in which the size of the XOS is determined based on the excitation energy or the oscillator strength of the targeted transitions. The two strategies are applied to a set of medium-sized organic molecules in order to assess both the accuracy and the computational cost of the methods. The results show that CC2 excitation energies and oscillator strengths can be calculated at a reduced computational cost, provided that the targeted transitions are local compared to the size of the molecule. To illustrate the potential of LoFEx for large molecules, both strategies have been successfully applied to the lowest transition of the bivalirudin molecule (4255 basis functions) and compared with time-dependent density functional theory.

Abstract
Developing ab initio approaches able to provide accurate excited-state energies at a reasonable computational cost is one of the biggest challenges in theoretical chemistry. In that framework, the Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, combined with the GW exchange-correlation self-energy, which maintains the same scaling with system size as TD-DFT, has recently been the focus of a rapidly increasing number of applications in molecular chemistry. Using a recently proposed set encompassing excitation energies of many kinds [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2016, 7, 586-591], we investigate here the performances of BSE/GW. We compare these results to CASPT2, EOM-CCSD, and TD-DFT data and show that BSE/GW provides an accuracy comparable to the two wave function methods. It is particularly remarkable that the BSE/GW is equally efficient for valence, Rydberg, and charge-transfer excitations. In contrast, it provides a poor description of triplet excited states, for which EOM-CCSD and CASPT2 clearly outperform BSE/GW. This contribution therefore supports the use of the Bethe-Salpeter approach for spin-conserving transitions.

Abstract
Concerning the major factors in the context of excited states analyses, namely charge centroids of the orbitals involved in the excitations, the distance between orbital centroids, and overlap integrals, a new metric-the Ω index-is proposed to assign the character and optical properties of electronically excited states. Using several molecules from different classes and also a well-studied standard database for time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) studies as benchmark criteria, accountability of the developed index is numerically assessed for local, charge transfer, and Rydberg excitations. It is shown that the nature of excited states can be discriminated using the Ω index, where its superior performance for those situations in which the previous descriptors were not helpful is also unveiled. Relationships are also examined between the Ω index and optical properties of some molecules under study in the framework of the sum-over-state approach. It is observed that there are correlations between the proposed index and computed hyperpolarizabilities based on the sum-over-state scheme. These findings offer the possibility of estimating excited-state properties of large systems from simple descriptors without explicitly performing calculations of high-order response functions.

Abstract
We have implemented the polarizable continuum model within the framework of the many-body Green's function GW formalism for the calculation of electron addition and removal energies in solution. The present formalism includes both ground-state and non-equilibrium polarization effects. In addition, the polarization energies are state-specific, allowing to obtain the bath-induced renormalisation energy of all occupied and virtual energy levels. Our implementation is validated by comparisons with ΔSCF calculations performed at both the density functional theory and coupled-cluster single and double levels for solvated nucleobases. The present study opens the way to GW and Bethe-Salpeter calculations in disordered condensed phases of interest in organic optoelectronics, wet chemistry, and biology.

Abstract
We have evaluated the accuracy of the Bethe-Salpeter singlet-triplet transition energies as well as singlet-triplet and triplet-triplet splittings for 20 organic molecules, using as reference the CC3 values determined by Thiel and co-workers with both the TZVP and aug-cc-pVTZ atomic basis sets. Our excitation energies are obtained on the basis of GW quasiparticle energy levels that are self-consistently converged with respect to the starting DFT eigenvalues. In its current form, BSE/GW is often unable to provide a balanced description of both singlet and triplet excited-states. While the singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet energy separations are obtained accurately, triplets are located too close in energy from the ground-state, by typically -0.55 eV when using standard functionals to generate the starting eigenstates. Applying the Tamm-Dancoff approximation upshifts the BSE triplet energies and allows reducing this error to ca. -0.40 eV, while using M06-HF eigenstates allows a further increase and hence a reduction of the error for triplet states, but at the cost of larger errors for the singlet excited-states. At this stage, the most accurate TD-DFT estimates therefore remain competitive for computing singlet-triplet transition energies. Indeed, with M06-2X, irrespective of the application or not of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation and of the selected atomic basis set, the deviations obtained with TD-DFT are rather small.

Abstract
We present a theoretical investigation of the excited-state properties of a large series of structurally diverse arylcarbonium derivatives that are known to be challenging for theoretical models. More specifically, we compare the pros and cons of TD-DFT (TD-M06-2X), ADC(2), and BSE/GW approaches for a large panel of compounds, using two different solvent models. Both 0-0 and vertical transition energies are considered and compared to the experimental values. All approaches reasonably reproduce the auxochromic and acidochromic shifts, although in most cases both TD-DFT and BSE/GW return larger correlation with experimental values than ADC(2) for these shifts. In contrast, the absolute transition energies obtained with ADC(2) tend to be closer to the measurements, TD-DFT using the M06-2X functional largely overestimating the experimental references (by ca. 0.5 eV), and BSE/GW providing intermediate values. In addition, we show that the selected solvent model has a significant impact on the results, the corrected linear-response approach providing larger transition energies than its linear-response counterpart.

Abstract
Photoinitiated phenomena play a crucial role in many living organisms. Plants, algae, and bacteria absorb sunlight to perform photosynthesis, and convert water and carbon dioxide into molecular oxygen and carbohydrates, thus forming the basis for life on Earth. The vision of vertebrates is accomplished in the eye by a protein called rhodopsin, which upon photon absorption performs an ultrafast isomerisation of the retinal chromophore, triggering the signal cascade. Many other biological functions start with the photoexcitation of a protein-embedded pigment, followed by complex processes comprising, for example, electron or excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic complexes. The optical properties of chromophores in living systems are strongly dependent on the interaction with the surrounding environment (nearby protein residues, membrane, water), and the complexity of such interplay is, in most cases, at the origin of the functional diversity of the photoactive proteins. The specific interactions with the environment often lead to a significant shift of the chromophore excitation energies, compared with their absorption in solution or gas phase. The investigation of the optical response of chromophores is generally not straightforward, from both experimental and theoretical standpoints; this is due to the difficulty in understanding diverse behaviours and effects, occurring at different scales, with a single technique. In particular, the role played by ab initio calculations in assisting and guiding experiments, as well as in understanding the physics of photoactive proteins, is fundamental. At the same time, owing to the large size of the systems, more approximate strategies which take into account the environmental effects on the absorption spectra are also of paramount importance. Here we review the recent advances in the first-principle description of electronic and optical properties of biological chromophores embedded in a protein environment. We show their applications on paradigmatic systems, such as the light-harvesting complexes, rhodopsin and green fluorescent protein, emphasising the theoretical frameworks which are of common use in solid state physics, and emerging as promising tools for biomolecular systems.
