Abstract
Non-noble metal catalysts based on pincer type compounds are of special interest for organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis. Next to iron and manganese, currently cobalt-pincer type complexes are successfully applied in various catalytic reactions. In this review the recent progress in (de)hydrogenation, transfer hydrogenation, hydroboration and hydrosilylation as well as dehydrogenative coupling reactions using cobalt-pincer complexes is summarised.

Abstract
A transition-metal-catalyzed borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen auto-transfer strategy allows the utilization of feedstock alcohols as an alkylating partner, which avoids the formation of stoichiometric salt waste and enables a direct and benign approach for the construction of C-N and C-C bonds. In this study, a nickel-catalyzed α-alkylation of unactivated amides and ester (tert-butyl acetate) is carried out by using primary alcohols under mild conditions. This C-C bond-forming reaction is catalyzed by a new, molecularly defined nickel(II) NNN-pincer complex (0.1-1 mol %) and proceeds through hydrogen auto-transfer, thereby releasing water as the sole byproduct. In addition, N-alkylation of cyclic amides under Ni-catalytic conditions is demonstrated.

Abstract
We report the first example of a cobalt PCcarbeneP pincer complex (1) featuring a central alkylidene carbon donor accessed through the dehydration of an alcoholic POP proligand.
We report the first example of a cobalt PCcarbeneP pincer complex (1) featuring a central alkylidene carbon donor accessed through the dehydration of an alcoholic POP proligand. Complex 1 shares bonding similarities with cobalt PBP and PNP pincer complexes where the donor atom engages in π-bonding with the cobalt centre, and thus completes the PXP (X = B, C, N) pincer ligand series for cobalt (for X donors that partake in M–L π-bonding). As compared to PBP and PNP pincer complexes, which are known to be good hydride and proton acceptors (respectively), complex 1 is found to be an effective hydrogen atom acceptor. Complex 1 partakes in cooperative ligand reactivity, engaging in several small molecule activations with styrene, bromine, carbon disulphide, phenyl acetylene, acetonitrile, hydrogen, benzaldehyde and water (through microreversibility). The mechanism for the formation of complex 1 is studied through the isolation and computational analysis of key intermediates. The formation of 1 is found to avoid C–H activation of the proligand, and instead proceeds through a combination of O–H activation, hydrogen atom transfer, β-hydride elimination and hydrogen activation processes.

Abstract
The first cobalt-catalyzed hydrogenative N-methylation and alkylation of amines with readily available carboxylic acid feedstocks as alkylating agents and H2 as ideal reductant is described. Combination of tailor-made triphos ligands with cobalt(II) tetrafluoroborate significantly improved the efficiency, thus promoting the reaction under milder conditions. This novel protocol allows for a broad substrate scope with good functional group tolerance, even in the presence of reducible alkenes, esters, and amides.

Abstract
Catalytic hydroboration of ketones with pinacolborane was achieved with a 2D iron(ii) coordination polymer (CP) of a divergent 4,2';6',4''-terpyridine (tpy) derivative under mild conditions with high efficiency. This solid iron catalyst system is more active towards the hydroboration of ketones than that of aldehydes, displaying a different trend of reactivity from known homogeneous iron hydroboration catalysts.

Abstract
The use of methanol for the selective methylation of aromatic amines with RuHCl(CO)(PNHP) (PNHP = bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)amine) is reported. Various aromatic amines were transformed into their corresponding monomethylated secondary amines in high yields at 150 °C with a very low catalyst loading (0.02-0.1 mol %) in the presence of KO tBu (20-60 mol %). The catalyst precursor, RuHCl(CO)(PNHP), was converted to [RuH(CO)2(PNHP)]+ under the catalytic conditions and also serves as a highly effective catalyst. The robustness of this catalyst contributes to its outstanding catalytic activity, even under reaction conditions, in which CO is liberated from methanol.

Abstract
A new phosphine-free Co(ii) complex-catalyzed synthesis of various quinoxalines via dehydrogenative coupling of vicinal diols with both o-phenylenediamines and 2-nitroanilines is reported. This complex was also effective for the synthesis of quinolines. The practical aspect of this catalytic system was revealed by the one-pot synthesis of 2-alkylaminoquinolines.

Abstract
The borrowing hydrogen strategy has been applied to the ethylation of imines with an air-stable iron complex as precatalyst. This approach opens new perspectives in this area as it enables the synthesis of unsymmetric tertiary amines from readily available substrates and ethanol as a C2 building block. A variety of imines bearing electron-rich aryl or alkyl groups at the nitrogen atom could be efficiently reductively alkylated without the need for molecular hydrogen. The mechanism of this reaction, which shows complete selectivity for ethanol over other alcohols, has been studied experimentally and by means of DFT computations.
